  • A visit to Inishbofin Island off the coast of Galway to explore the island and wild camp for the night. I caught a boat from Cleggan Pier in Galway at 2pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon to make the 35 minute journey over to the island. My return journey was at 1pm the following day. Inishbofin has many wonderful sights to keep you entertained - fantastic cliffs, birdlife, beaches, coves and plenty of solitude. Yet another island that is worth many visits!

    My wanderlust seems to be impacting my heart rate as I watch this stunning film. Sooooo well done!
    I’m sincerely grateful that you’ve given me this wonderful distraction from the stress I’m feeling at the moment. For that brief 15 minutes I felt relief, you’ve captured that paradise beautifully.
    Thing I love about your wild camping videos is that there is no stress about trespassing or breaking bylaws, you’d think that would be the case here but it’s certainly not.
    You’ve seen a little of my area, it’s all private land, all of it. Municipal governments don’t want wild campers, nor do private land owners. Plus I’m simply not as brave as you, that’s a fact!
    My very best to you, with sincere thanks once again,
    Cheers,
    Rick

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks very much Rick! Hope the heart rate is beginning to settle now 😮 Sorry to hear you've been experiencing stress but great you found a little gateway to some relief...not nice to experience. These little trips are big stress busters for me - I leave everything behind when I head off. Its usually just for one night but it seems to do the trick, until the next time I get an urge to jump again! Hiking definitely opens up more remote and wild places for me to go (as opposed to the bike) - once I left the pier I saw no one. There were no houses or farms near me, even if there was private land, I wouldn't have known who an owner was. To be honest - camping wild is so uncommon here but no one would have sight of me at all in these places. I feel very lucky that I can escape to nature like this...my big love is the tent, the novelty hasn't worn off for me at all!! 😊 An endless list of places for me to explore over here still...thanks for watching and your message! Take Care 👍

    Miriam, thank you so much for such a wonderful video. Spectacular! I visited Inishbofin a month ago for a couple of days. I wish I had gone there many years ago. My late grandmother was born and raised on the island. I was able to visit the small, three room home where she lived. What was incredible is that I had an opportunity to actually see the chairs and table that my great grandfather made and where my grandmother, siblings, and parents sat to eat their meals. It gave me the chills.

    Hi Miriam, this vid popped up on my recommends on this dark, rainy Friday morning. It's brilliant. So well put together. I love Inishbofin. I've been there several times birdwatching and thought I'd seen it all more or less but this video makes me think I need to spend more time in the North Eastern bit. For such a small island there's so much variation in the landscape. And places where you can get a good coffee! It really is a special place. I hope you've had a good week.

I have the same feeling on all our islands - not one has ever disappointed me! 😍 I agree with you the island has so much packed in and a worthy place for an overnight trip. All is going pretty well this week (I think!) - I had my first session of chemo on Tuesday so I’ve been adjusting to the new experiences in my body. @MiriamKennedy It's good to hear treatment has started. I don't have any personal experience of what you're going through, but I can imagine once you get a diagnosis that you probably just want to get on with things. I know you've said in the past that you are never quite sure of your motivation for making these videos, but aren't they great to look back on? I like winter, but I do struggle with the dark evenings - and it really does help to have videos like this to remind me of days in the sun. Around now, I always start counting the days to the winter solstice (63!). By the time the days start to get longer, I hope you'll be well on the road to full health and planning more island hopping. x

      @@chelladugg 63 days to winter solstice - amazing!! Yep the videos are great to look back on, it’s just the performance thing of speaking to camera I suppose….don’t mind me, it’s a loop I continuously find myself in around posting videos! I can feel great about it but before long another part of myself comes out to play to sabotage it possibly but maybe it also helps me get clearer on what I really want to do when I use the camera 🤔 I hope the dark evenings will pass easily for you this year🤞 The buzz of long nights in the tent tends to greatly reduce as the winter goes on for me, I’m eventually wishing for the longer daylight hours to hurry along!! Miriam, that was some 'perch' you had out on the rocks as the sun went down☀️👍👍 A beautiful tour of the island from above and it looks like a fantastic place to go wild and explore😊 You picked a really cool camp spot for your balmy evening outdoors, way better than those busy camp sites😊. Always amazing to sit and watch the sun go down out over the Atlantic - nothing better in my humble opinion👍 Fantastic weather and beautiful light throughout. There is something magical about those islands on the west of Ireland where you can walk around the coastline and pretty much be on your own. A wonderful trip👍👍

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Martin! We need bigger buckets - smaller pack sizes but bigger buckets!! 😉 With one night you see a lot and get a very good feel for the entire island, with 2 nights you could go at a slower pace to take it in more. Filming of course adds to the time. My return journey was at 1pm - with a later ferry I could have squeezed in more but then you have to face into a long drive home later at night. You’re a faster walker than me so that has to be factored in too! If you had the time then 2 nights would be nice but you definitely get a good sense of the entire island with one night!

    What a gorgeous opens sequence and nice to get a free anything but that map was a good one to get free. Your tent looked real roomy, especially for a one person tent and what a place to pitch - not bad indeed, that sunset was superb! Loved the morning time-lapse and to get the fresh sea air on your face first thing in the morning must have been amazing. Those sausages were a tad on the small side for me but sitting there, eating them with the sea wind on my face, I would not be complaining! Yep, East coast was doing very well too and that lake spot was awesome but those two beaches, especially the one at Dumhatch was stunning - you sure were were not abroad? Cheers Alan

      You're right there!! In fairness I'd say that camp site gave me a good taste of what it was that I was really looking for...its the best campsite I've come across in terms of having a whiff of what wild camping might be like. It possibly played a big part in inspiring me to realise that I wanted to just head out with a tent on my own...I was a bit slow on the uptake it seems! 😂 The good weather really helped this trip Niall - it does wonders for helping show it off. A lovely place, another one for the list! I was thinking about the wild camping piece; we’ve been doing it for about 40 years, I can only remember once being approached by a landowner, and he was ok when he saw that we weren’t causing harm or leaving rubbish. Good for you exploring these places and thanks for sharing with us.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats a good record to have!! I've only been approached once - I was in Wicklow and the wind was very strong so I came down off Lugalla and headed for the forest to pitch the tent. Its private land and I must have been spotted on CTV and someone drove out to tell me to leave. There was no negotiation - I left with my tail between my legs. Thats the only time for me...a pretty good record I think too! Besides that incident, I've never been approached at all. Thanks Andrew 😂😂 I borrowed a trick from a friend and when bringing a big sausage like this (my pan is small so this is one sausage cut in two), I simmer the sausage at home for about 10 minutes in boiling water so that I can have confidence it will cook right through. A raw sausage doesn't appeal...works for me with my little pan anyway. • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sean - you don’t need to clear it with anyone. My best advice would be to camp in the north east of the island as it’s very wild over there and you are not near any houses. The houses are to the South of the island near the pier and once you leave the pier area, it’s pretty sparse of dwellings. The 2 big beaches have some houses nearby but I also saw some tents set up in that area too, so that’s another option to consider. Just be respectful and quiet and no one will be bothered by you at all 😉 You’ll love it!! Let me know how you get on if you visit it!! 👍
