  • A hike through the Derryveagh Mountains along the commonly known Seven Sisters route from Muckish to Errigal. The mountains along this route included: Muckish, Crocknalaragagh, Aghla Beg, Ardloughnabrackbaddy, Aghla More, Beaghy (in addition to the seven sisters), Mackoght & Errigal (from the North Face). To make things easier for myself I camped for two nights (Muckish and Altan Lough) which allowed me plenty of time to film. A wonderful mountain range to spend time especially with such great weather allowing for magnificent visibility. The weather is not usually so pleasant for three days in a row!

WOW! Miriam! Oh that was fantastic!! What a BEAUTIFUL film! gosh those views going on for ever and the sunrises and sunsets! those tiny paths, you in the middle of it all, everything. Wow. That incredible sunrise and the crucifix and the shining sea.... The lapping water of the lonely loughs... the old machinery abandoned up there... that old tower... Wow. Beautiful, beautiful. What fantastic camp spots. When I saw your 4.30am sunrise sequence, I grinned like mad and I wondered if that was the exact same morning I also got up at 4.30am and unzipped my tent high up on Axe Edge... But I was just tootling round easy stuff in the Peak District haha! You were doing these epic climbs! Brilliant! Thank you for sharing such a beautiful and inspiring film!

Aww thank you Susanna for noticing all that you did!! I too thought the same thing when I saw your early morning tent opening sequence 😂 So nice to see those morning sights…you’ve reminded me of the scariest thing that ever happened to me on one of my trips. It was in the very early days of me heading out on these trips - it was about 4:30am and I needed to go to the loo and I got up and stuck my head out the tent door and saw a flash light shining in my direction. I got the fright of my life and thought who the hell is out here at this time. I ducked back into the tent and after about 30 seconds I plucked up the courage to look out again….it was actually the sun coming up, I’d never seen it before!!! Since that day I just love catching those sights if I can…very special! So glad I got to do this trip Susanna as I’d wanted to try do it and film it for a very long time. It was very enjoyable to plan for it and work out how I might logistically deal with the car etc and it all worked out so well…thankfully!! 😉 Thanks again for watching it and I’m so glad you enjoyed it!! 😍

@@MiriamKennedy Yeh planning for that adventure must have been a big thing, reckoning distances, and food, enough custard creams haha! And where to get water actually... And yeh how to get the car in the right place! hitching! I wondered what you were doing, writing something in big letters on a piece of paper haha! You are brave. Haha that is funny re the flash light! About sunrises, I went to see the David Hockney video installation thing at Kings Cross in London and it includes a sunrise and it was great, just like sunrises can be, when there is the glow and then just a little sliver of light and it grows, and then as the sun really gets going suddenly wham a whole lot of light floods everywhere. Your Muckish sunrise looked like that - and with the reflected light off the sea too, wow that was so beautiful, must have been amazing to witness it. I loved seeing Muckish again actually cos I saw it in the rain, when I rode across Donegal a couple of years ago. It was beautiful then too. And I loved seeing it again in your film. Anyway! Best wishes!

Twice I've watched this and I still don't know what impresses me more - your route planning (including hitching in), the route itself or the actual filming. You totally nailed this one, from beginning to end. And great that your work colleagues facilitated in helping you take the time off to do it when the weather was more favourable.
I know what you mean when you said you weren't a natural at this - my pal Annie is, she can hike for days and take anything and everything in her stride, but I'm not a distance hiker or a mountaineer, I just like being out and enjoying the moment, and it takes some effort at times. If I'm recording a trip solo, the playing with the camera part is what I love to do best. Your drone footage is the best I've seen on TH-cam, not just the shots, but the way you edit it into the video, but don't let it control the video at the same time. Those aerial shots of the cross on Muckish were superb.
Brilliant Miriam, and one I'll no doubt watch again. Super chuffed you got that glorious weather for your trip, and nice to see a shot of the orange trowel just hanging out in the sun on a nice piece of soft meadow like grass 😉😂 atb Donna :)

    • @MiriamKennedy

Donna you were the only person that mentioned the trowel 👏 A significant morning shot...marking the wonderful experience of a lighter load being carried up Errigal! A very happy moment 😎 Thanks so much for your lovely encouragement, you make it sound like I know what I'm doing...I'm just a chancer with the drone that gets lucky every now and again 😉 So glad I held off for the weather, it was great to take in those views along the way (and see where I was going!) I was knackered at the end of Day 2...so nice to chill out a the lake for the evening and reflect on it all and think about Day 3!! Delighted I took the time off work too - sometimes its more important to just go and this was one of those times! Everything went so smoothly too - the lift, the weather...apart from my thigh high dip into the bog, thankfully that lake was close by to get rid of some of the weight of the muck and that my boot came out of it still on my foot 🤗 I thoroughly enjoyed my adventure and I'm very glad you got to see some of the lovely mountains in this area too!! Cheers Donna 🌻

Thanks Martin!! 😊 There were some tough sections on the north face of Errigal for sure, some parts required me to use both of my hands and feet and while in that position it’s very hard to look up to assess the route properly with a big backpack on your back 🫣 It worked out and I know if I was to do it again I’d feel more confident. The ridge itself on top of Errigal isn’t scary or tough, just sections of the north face climb to get the ridge are - some parts are very steep. I’d like to have got more shots at the window and other steep sections but it was too much bother to try climb back down again with my bag etc. with the steepness and scariness of it 🫣 Cheers for your message!! Struggling to find words to describe how stunning you made this look. Climbing Muckish by the Miner's Path and Errigal from the North are by far and away the best approaches for both mountains. I can't believe you managed to get such a perfect sunset and sunrise both on Muckish, so many times I've passed it with it's semi permanent cap of cloud - perfect timing. The drone shot at 13:30 is outstanding and the ridge across the valley above the Poisoned Glen looked so inviting too 😂 You've inspired me to get this trail off my bucket list - it's been there far too long 👏👏👏

And hiking from Muckish to Errigal, camping alone in a tent for three days and two nights, and eating meals is also very cool. In particular, the view of the morning sun rising with the sunset there was very spectacular, and the drone footage was also very cool.

Did that walk years ago, its a tough one but really rewarding so i can see why you had it on your wish list.

Beautiful photography as usual Miriam. Intrigued by the shot of your car (a red car, apparently yours) driving down the road and away from the camera. Didnt look like a drone shot; but if not, that was a lot of setting up for a seemingly insignificant shot (I dont think it insignificant, by the way).
Really enjoyed this walk of yours, it was so thought provoking. The whole process of planning and executing a trip like that. The hardship of the ascending and descending peaks; and the whole slog.
When you look back at what you have achieved, (especially from high up) and just how far you've come; is sometimes humbling, sometimes filling one with pride.
At the beginning, one dreams only of the end. When at the end, one yearns for the beginning. And try as one may, when ensconced in the "slog" it (to me anyway) it is so very difficult to truly appreciate where one is, and what one is doing.
Filming and having the film to view afterwards, must seem even more interesting. Forgetting, or at least lessening the "slog" must (as in memory) make one almost wish to be somewhere on that journey; almost eternally.
But that level of appreciation somehow escapes me within the actual journey..haha..Don't know how you think/feel about this?
Your film of this adventure is stunning, thought provoking (for me anyway..haha..and I wasn't even there); peppered with religious iconography; beautiful scenery, personal moments of highs and lows (literally); and a pleasure to watch (and strangely, somehow feel included in).
Loved this, thankyou Miriam. Apologies for my over verbose comments; this is actually the toned down version..haha🤣.
Take care Miriam 😊 ps. Hope you enjoy New Zealand (any film?)!

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Tim - I always thoroughly enjoy your verbose comments 🤩 That shot of the car was a drone shot, an impromptu hop from the car to try capture the view and car. I had it in mind to try capture a shot like that but from another road that had greater views of the mountains but I would have had to drive away from Errigal to get that shot and when that view appeared while I was driving, I thought this will do! I hadn't intended how I would use the shot when I got it but it found its place!
About the memories etc and having a video. Each shot is capturing a single moment and that can colour and paint a particular picture. My 'moan' having come down off Aghla More was a moment in time, I debated on whether to include it as I was conscious that it could mis-represent my experience of the trip. It was just one moment but still a valid moment. There are so many different experiences that are processed on a trip and the video gives me a flavour of some of them - the fear at various stages of the North Face climb, being able to see the entire route and the doubt as to whether I'd be able for it, the joy of vast open spaces, simplicity of having everything I need on my back, the humility of getting sucked in to the bog, the pleasure of a sunset and sunrise, anticipation of potentially meeting the goal, exhilaration of reaching the top, the contentment of life in my tent, the joy of going for a poo outdoors!
I really made sure to take my time on this trip - I wanted to capture the views so I wanted to have the time to do it. If I didn't have a camera with me I would likely have done it with one overnight...but why rush it. So...the slog wasn't too bad, I was very tired at the end of day 2 walking though. I notice that the pressure of a timeline adds to my stress and sense of the slog..when I go slowly I can definitely be more present and in the experience more and not fighting myself or circumstances as much. Of course - this isn't my constant experience, I do a fair bit of fighting myself and the world out there, but it did occur to me on the trip that the pressure of the clock is a big factor in my stress so there are definitely things I can do to not fall into that trap.
I had a great trip to New Zealand thanks! A few lovely weeks..I didn't bring the camera gear with me though, it wasn't something I wanted to do. As wonderful as it is having a video record and the lovely connection through this community, I value my trips where they are just for me hugely too!
So glad you sent a verbose message and hopefully my verbose response makes sense too!! 🤗 Hope you're having good weather!

@@MiriamKennedy I'm glad you enjoy my waffling..haha. One of the highlights of seeing your films pop up in my feed is that I do enjoy our lengthy chats. I won't worry so much in the future, about my lengthy comments..haha.
I totally get what you say about videos painting distinct pictures of the memories of events. Photographs and even the (rose tinted) selection of memory, has a similar effect; perhaps less vivid.
You can hardly class your selection of words as "having a moan!" You have the advantage, for want of a better word; of knowing how you felt at that moment; but it didn't really come across as such.
You undertook a monumental journey and the reality is, that if at some point; even if due to exhaustion, low blood sugar, lingering injuries, dehydration or stress; it would be very unusual and unlikely to not moan at some point or other!?
As you stated, you were very tired after day two. You're allowed to have a couple of moans per film..I think anyhow..haha.
I liked all the things you said about your experiences, from the humility of the bog to the conTENTment of life in your tent; and everything in between. I think you and I think very similarly.
You did say an interesting thing in your response, (you always say interesting things, so I'll change that to a particularly interesting..). You said, that you do a fair bit of fighting yourself, and the world out there!
I hope you don't think me too impertinent to ask you about that, and what you mean by that?
I'm glad you enjoyed New Zealand! To be honest, I half expected your next post to be titled, "a Tolkien-esk trek across Middle Earth, and an X-mid camp at Minas Tirith." I can understand though, that some memories and experiences are private. Otherwise it wouldn't be a normal life; it would become another, "Truman Show." Glad you enjoyed it, anyway!
Looking forward to your next film; whenever that is..and our next chat..haha! You take care of yourself Miriam. 😊

@@timporter8886 I was probably a bit too dramatic on my choice of words Tim 🤔 Normal processing I’ll call it - the inner dialogue that can hop around where at times I’m critical of myself and critical of others…not having too many distractions beyond nature can bring thoughts into view a little more possibly. That was fabulous Miriam. I reckon it all came together on this one - work mates and weather. It sure was a majestic hike. Wow, what a sunrise on the first morning. Inspirational. Gotta say I do electrolytes to - essential when working so hard. Ha, - for an unnatural at the mountains you did superb. I sympathize with how knackered though. Well, good going. All the best. Mark

Ah thanks very much Mark 🤗 I’m so glad I didn’t go for it a few days earlier when the weather would have been dull - a great use of Annual Leave in fairness 😉 The sunrise that morning really was so lovely - delighted I got to witness it and that some of the shots captured that special morning. Prosaic mud…😂 Very glad I remembered to get the camera out to capture that experience and I was so glad my boot came out of the bog with me - I nearly wore trail runners for this trip and I’m pretty sure it would have come off me when that happened 😳 Yes it’s the X-Mid 1 - it’s performing well and it’s great to have such a quality lightweight tent in my arsenal! It looks so good too 😊

      @tonypaddler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MiriamKennedy excellent memory Miriam!
      I didn't ☹️
The very annoying problem I have is that all good quality, lightweight tents are made for people of up to about 5'10" and size 8 feet!
I'm over 6'2" with size 13 feet so by the time my sleeping bag is fluffed up and on my air mat I am touching each end of the tent, and the ones I narrowed it down to were a bit tight on length.
I'll have to thoroughly research further into it as I want to spend decent money.

Yes this sort of route of multiple achievable summits that you can connect is my ideal for two or three days: you get such variety of terrain, surface and vegetation it fully loads one spirtes up with richness and power. That is a just magisterial experience - congratulations. Something else. I fully enjoyed the Irish names and that really added to the grandeur for me. The naming of mountains so often an eclectic shambles of local languages, historic names, the entertaining and the inexplicable. I really struggle with the Irish, Gaelic and the like, but felt here the naming you gave was an important part of the tale. Entertainment that uplifts. JMO.
