I think you're spot on on all fronts. I got both because, well why not? I found that the 6XX's have "less" bass but that the bass is more articulate. It's really pronounced when you listen to something like Bela Fleck's "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo". The 58X's have a nice round bass response but you can't hear the detail of the bass string's vibration, it's just not resolving the bass detail like the 6XX's do). I've found that both the 6XX's and the 58X's can be shouty in the mids depending on who the vocalist is. For instance Norah Jones' voice on songs like "Don't know Why I Didn't Come" can get shouty and punchy on the 58X's and is much more enjoyable on the 6XX's. My conclusion is that I'm not disappointed with either. If you want to listen critically the 6XX's are a great option to hear every detail but for a nice relaxed listening experience the 58X Jubilees have a very pleasant smooth sound signature conducive to long listening sessions. Appreciate the channel. Keep up the good work.
Have you tried removing the foam from the 58x? I have the 58x without the foam and things got clearer without the foam lost a little bit of bass but not too much
@@asleeperj I did remove the foam almost immediately from my 58x's. I probably should've said that my comparison was based on the 58x's without that foam behind the drivers and the stock 6xx's. I like them both and, interestingly enough, I really like the 58x. There's something about the non-fatiguing way they reproduce music that I put them on more often than the 6xx.
You just saved me $50 as the 58X seems to fit for me as I was worried about the power to drive the 6XX (mostly laptop and phone use) and the low end performance (worried I'd always think "should have gotten the better bass") and being 25% cheaper these sound like the right call!
My 6XX took so long to ship (5 months) that I bought a suitable (portable) amp/dac to play around with while I waited. That almost doubled my investment, but they work so well together I’m more than happy. I think the 58XX is better value for a beginner like myself for that reason, but I don’t regret the purchases, still an impressive amount of SQ for $$$. Really solid (girthy?) comparison BTW 👍🏼

Very interesting comparison. I own the HD58X, the HD660s and the Focal Elex and I have to say that the HD58X is superior compared to the HD660S. The mid range is nearly the same but the HD58X has definitvely more bass extension and the highs of the HD660S often are a little bit to crisp for me. So the HD58X in my opinion is the best headphone of the 6-series. I do not own the HD6XX but if you say the mids are a little bit more pronounced with the HD6XX then the HD58X is the better choice for me. Compared to the Elex the HD58X has nearly the same tonality with al little less peaks in the upper mids and highs. Bass extension are nearly the same on both only the amount of bass is on the HD58X nearly 3-4dB more then the Elex has. But the Elex is more refined, has more punch and the better acceleration and dynamics. Let me say... the HD58X is like a minor version of the Elex sounding a little bit more warm. The bestheadphone below 150 USD and maybe one of the best headphones up to 500 USD!

@Tom Alawatte I wouldn't say that the 58X is bass heavy, it just has sub-bass, there's not a crazy drop in low range unlike a lot of open headphones which is why I think the 58X is interesting

And with the Outer ear grille foam removed I really could not tell any difference other than the Bass is better on my 58X but my only concern now as I cannot find any comparisons is:- HD660S vs HD6XX as the 6XX (which I’ve not heard)are supposedly better again than the 58X but are they better than the 660S.

Your closing argument confuses me. Most people tend to agree that the 58x is a bit brighter than the 6xx, which has this so called "Sennheiser veil", that makes them relaxing and laid back, darker.
Just ordered the 58X, and the Koss KSC75X from drop. I have the SHP9600’s, and the Sennheiser HD800S’s, I use my Game One’s (HD558’s) the most though for gaming, ect, and they’re amazing!
Hi Josh. I have 58x and 650. 650 is a bit too warm and thick and dark for me, so I pull down the mid bass hump a bit with eq. I like the 58x stock, the way it is. And it sounds great plugged into an iPad even without an amp. I also have an HD 600 and I love it when mated with higher end equipment
I find it interesting you find the 6XX to be shouty at times. Yeah I have HD58X, HD600 and HD6XX, and while the mids on HD58X/600 are very similar, maybe a bit more forward on HD600, I feel the mids on HD6XX to be definitely recessed.
DIfferences in amps and age (by age I am implying how well you hear) and music preferences and tolarance to treble. For example I'm young (less than 30) and I find Aune X1S to be too trebley, using HE 4XX and B&W P7 and there is just too much treble in vocals, anime, movies.
I use HD58X and HD6XX I love both , but HD6XX sound way better to me … they sound more dark more polite like the music is coming in slow motion also they have something that I cant find in any Headphone that I used , They are soft and dark but at the same time analytical without being over bright … For me they sound better than more expensive Headphone ( I guess its the sound signature that I love)

I own every 6 series from the original 580s and if you take the Dampening material out of the 58X your highs are superior to the HD650s or 6XX and actually sound almost identical to the 660s . I still prefer on some music to keep the dampening material in so I bought two of the 58Xs so I'm not constantly having to pull them apart . They are so close to the 660s $500 Headphones I returned mine. Easily the Best Buy in Audiophile headphones in a decade . But the 58X do not scale as well with higher end amps so I still think the HD650s or their twin the 6XX are still a keeper.

Hey, Robbie, I'm trying to find information on this series, and I'm curious to know which one is closer to the HD600s, and how close they are. I'm considering procuring one for my own use due to the relatively low cost but I want to make sure I'm not making a mistake. You see, I demoed both the 600s and the 650s off of a number of middle to high-quality sources at an audio store a while back, and I absolutely hated the way the 650s sounded. I would describe them as sounding "underwater." Now objectively, I know this is because they're very warm headphones and I tend to prefer neutral, maybe even treble-heavy sound signatures. Because of this, I adored the HD600s, they sounded much, much better than their price tag suggested. Next to a pair of Beyerdynamic T1s and some other megabuck headphones, I really found I didn't care much for the higher-priced models. They struck me as being roughly on par in terms of overall clarity. And yeah, that's really the operating word for me. Clarity. I lean towards wide, precise soundstages and detail. If I could afford HD800s, which were also being demoed there, I'd take 'em in a heartbeat. So yeah, would you say either Massdrop model sounds more or less like the HD600? If so, what are the differences?

Personally I only own the 58x, never heard the 6xx so I don't know really to compare but when I took out the foam, the soundstage opened up a bit and it sounded slightly less muddy and overall a bit more clear. People that own both said that it sounded practically like the 6xx when they did that.. Either way, there's a forum on diy (somewhere down this comment section)on simple mods which would make the 58x sound like the 660s!!! If you like the 660s better than the 6xx, that means that the 58x could Evan sound better!!!!!
If I'm not mistaken, I think there's also a mod for the 58x to sound like the 650/6xx. The reason why u can do all these mods (I think) is bc when u take out the foams, the magnet is open unlike the rest of the 6 line. This allows you to experiment different things to make it sound like different headphones..
david maison I haven't. Others have and they said what I said. Although I plan on doing this mod some time soon. Regarding the 6xx,I don't think u can bc the magnet is covered as apposed To the 58x which is opened behind the foam.

i watched a video a while back showing that the foam does not have any noticeable difference. Negligible difference even when measured with hesdphone testing instruments.
I just have to mention that with different AMP, they can sound VERY different. The sound stage will be way larger and deeper with the 6xx than the 58x which only open up the wide but the not the height and depth. And the tonality will be very different with different AMP. Therefore it is important to show your whole testing setup. Otherwise just the cheaper headphone is always better with a phone or laptop.
My moon ace NEO($3k)+HD6xx sounds way better than the schiit modi2+magni3($300)+ HD800s. Because all the good headphones are like supercars, how great they perform depend on the drivers as well.
I had the 6XX .. then got the 58X .... and sold the 6XX after listening to both. the 58X seems a bit better overall to me. Clarity is the same to my ears. the 58X seem a bit more clear actually, I don't know why that is. My AMP is a 02/ODAC from Mayflower.
"Shouty" is such a weird audiophile term. It makes it sound like the singers change the way they sing. I think its better to say that the vocals stick out more than the instruments. That is what I found the 58x sounded like compared to my Denon ah d2000s.
I think what they mean is harsh, because sticking out doesn't quite explain it either, as it feels vocals are only sounding higher, ratter than piercing.
Interesting and very different from my own impressions, while the HD6XX it's very detailed and technical, I just don't enjoy their sound (too dark with prominent and not so well defined bass) compared to the HD600 and HD58X, which I really like, specially the HD58X. Will you do an HD58X vs HD660S comparison? given the similarities on the graphs I thought the HD58X could be a good cheaper alternative, or is the HD660S on a higher league?
I find HE 4XX alot better over 660S.... the drivers are made of pretty much same materials and the materials for headphones are VERY common. Plastic, metal, magnets etc etc. All that is different is the sound signature and headphone housing.
Loki Odinson The 660S driver has no more relationship to the HD700 driver than the 58X driver to those lower lines. The 58X is NO DOUBT in the Sennheiser 6 series family.

I currently have the Drop+THX Pandas which I absolutely love but which they had just a touch more sub bass. Between the 58x and 6xx (based on my love for the Pandas), which headphone would you suggest? The HD6xx might be more detailed but the HD58x has a more pleasing and balanced sound signature. HD6xx has a bump in the low mids (around 300-500hz) which makes vocals sound extra chesty. Listening to Chris Botti, it over accentuates the lower body of trumpet sounds. For that reason, I can see how you can say the HD6xx is better for female vocals since this bump can give female voices a bit more body. Whereas for male voices, it could sound too chesty. This is the most immediate difference i noticed between these 2 headphones. The HD6xx also has less extended bass, but this is not as noticeable as the difference in the low mids.
HD660S also suffers from pumping 300-500 Hz - the violin starts to sound like a viola, and the singer grows fat by 40 kg )) HD580 has a less noisy middle, even compared to HD600 - because right behind the capsule it has no plastic petals (and behind the capsule of HD600 they are).
I have the 6xx powered by the jds labs element dac/. I listen to most genres of music and play games like pubg and overwatch on them and I'm very impressed. I think a tube amp is in my near future.
The 650 would benefit greatly from an OTL amp such as the Dark voice, Crack, Woo Audio 3,2 etc... They will sing with tube amps such as those. Im not sure what amp you should pair with the 58x or 660s as the lower impedance will not give you as good results with the OTL amps.
Hd58x for the win!! They’re cheaper because there’s no fancy presentation box and are not as analytical as the hd6xx. More fun and masks harshness that the hd6xx may reveal on some recordings that can make the listening experience Fatiguing.
Hey Josh, have you ever listened to a Stax headphone? Picked up the SR-34 combo for only €20,-, about $17,-. It sounds absolutely amazing. I would say it has a lot of the same qualities as the HD6XX with some extra detail because of it being electret "earspeakers".

The 58x absolutely lacks in the higher end. It lacks the airiness of higher end headphones, that 'magic' factor. They sound great but they don't have that 'something' that really gives you chill bumps on airy sounding songs. They are relaxed and balanced. At the price, they are great and I totally recommend them, but they don't 'beat' the higher priced versions, and you will find yourself switching to your others just to get that sweet upper range.
I primary use headphones with my phone. I was leaning more towards the 6xx. Would these go well with a dragonfly dac? Either black or red? Or any other suggestions?
I really doubt Sennheiser would compromise on their quality. And Toyota makes their engines for EU in Poland. You should look for RMI-100 amp on DIYAudio.com it's designed by engineer from Romania and it's a 50-60W blast, f... stinking good.
I will compare them with HD599, HD58X have way more sub bass , warmer and more analytic . But HD599 are way more open , without sub bass , they are over bright , and soundstage feels big . On HD58X its like hearing the voice in front of you on HD599 its like you are on a bigger room . For my I use both of them , for Stereo music HD58X are perfect and for movies and games HD599.
I've got the same two too. I found the hd599 was quite 'bassy' (for me, not necessarily because the signature is a V). HOWEVER, that has eased off. I really enjoy using the 599 on my Samsung S8. The hd58x has longer/deeper bass frequency response. When I first listened to them, it reminded a bit of that (I think) Dolby sound advert before movies (sorry I don't go to cinema often, so it might not be Dolby). I think I'm talking about sub bass. Anyway, IMO the bass is not overstated, just more extension on the HD58x. I thought the treble was lovely on the 58x. Detail's better too than the 599 but not by huge amounts. I'm trying to trial a dragonfly red to see if it helps/makes a difference to the 58x. Interesting side note. Another TH-cam headphone reviewer says it's known that the bass of Sennheisers ease off as the pads (presumably eaecups) wear in, as I swear the bass was more significant on the 599 when I first got them. I like both but actually prefer the 599 for music currently. I think if I can get a headphone amp, I at least know I'm driving the 58x appropriately. I reckon my phone isn't doing them justice. Any thoughts?
@@gazzabazzazza you want see any difference buying something else than s8 on 58x trust me i had s7edge and s9 now i use lg v30. Samsung s7 had to enable hires audio dont forget that. Also on s9 it has change name and ita dolby on both of theae settings they muat enable the dac on Samsung's i gueas , on lg it says highres but ita always on by default. Anyways 58x on lg v30 sound natural ans amazing at default settings eq. On s7 s9 they sound really boomy i had to lower bass, same happens to hd599 they sound very boomy on mids with every phone i have test them. But not lg v30 i bealive v30 is more flat ? Also i have an old htc 10 that it has boom setting for headphones... That also must be enabled and also sounds the same as s7 s9. About power 58X are easy to drive so your mobile is perfect just enable highres or dolby option on the menu after connecting the headphones and after thatu can eq them to fil ypur needs.
@@Tripokaridos22 Thanks very much for all this mate :) A few things to add or comment on: perfectly possible that I won’t hear any difference. We know the debate about having anything more than 44.1khz sampling is a big one (Nyquist theorem etc). I think it makes sense that recording the original source audio at a higher rate may bring some benefit. Also, a higher bitrate for audio formats is true too but is not linear. For example, you really can hear a difference between 128 and 192 bitrate. However, can someone hear a difference between 320 bit and flac? I’m not sure. It’s suggested in blind tests the answer is no but others think they can. In fact, a blind test in 2013 archimago.blogspot.com/2013/02/high-bitrate-mp3-internet-blind-test_3422.html found more people thinking that the flac files sounded worse! This article is fascinating too: www.mojo-audio.com/blog/the-24bit-delusion/ However, I am interested in an amp, so make sure my higher resistance headphones are well driven (hence my interest in the very portable dragonfly red). yep, i have dolby atmos as an option on my phone. This is not the same as high-res audio, I don’t think. I thought it sounded ok when it was switched on but I don’t like to modify my audio unless I have to. My understanding is dolby atmos adds vertical positioning to surround sound, so I’m not sure how that would affect a 2 channel audio signal. I guess it’s maybe a bit like virtual surround sound or something. This is what Samsung says about the s8 audio features: news.samsung.com/global/everything-youve-wanted-to-know-about-the-galaxy-s8s-audio-features it mentions both UHQ audio playback and the UHQ upscaler. It’s not clear when the UHQ audio playback kicks in though. The description suggests it works when it thinks audio has been mastered at >44.1khz. However, we then have the problem of the android audio driver forcing resampling at 44.1khz, no matter what. The alternative to this are audio apps that claim to have their own drivers, which can maybe bypass the android driver and reach the phone DAC directly e.g. UAPP. The Android driver is a problem IMO. Pass through to an external DAC ‘might’ make a difference then. Interestingly, UAPP say that exynos chipped Samsung handset (s6-10 AND the plus handsets) all resample to 192khz, no matter what (even DSD music gets resampled). www.extreamsd.com/index.php/hires-audio-driver very very confusing tbh. As to the UHQ rescaler, this seems like a waste of time to me. Also, rescaling is not the same as resampling, from what I’ve read. How do you think you turn on high-res audio on the Samsung? Also, I think you are doing well with the LG v30. I have heard really good reviews of the audio on the LG.

No, not enough juice to power 300 ohms, my Moto G7 is usually just at the limit with most music with 58X. If I use EQ compensation in Onkyo player then maybe 3extra dB of output wouldn't hurt. If you want 6XX then portable amp/DAC is a rather necessary.
TRINHinc I know ur not asking me but I prefer it with the pads:) maybe just me but I’ve seen several others agree. Great thing is that is is EASY to do so you really have both options. Def more treble with the pads removed, but the overall sound with them in to me is just wonderful, and a little less harsh to my ears

I don't know. I think the Jubilee is better in every way. I own both. Low end and high end are cleaner and clearer. I think the Sennheiser veil is quite prevalent on the 6xx whereas it is lifted in the Jubilee. I like the 6xx when I want a more relaxing listen. The Jubilee seems more technical and faster. Zeos reviews thinks that the 660 and the 58x are exactly the same when you remove the foam from the 58x. He thinks they're the same exact drivers too. Just saying.
SHAWN WATSON I have the 600 and now the 58x jubilee. I gotta say for me I actually prefer the jubilee...with the pads NOT removed. It’s a really great headphone that’s for sure.

You know what if the 58X have extra foam behind the driver then it would explain the difference in sound signature. If you would remove that foam then 58X should be a lot closer to 6XX.
There's actually a huge thread on SuperBestAudioFriends about mods for the 58X. Since the drivers are not the same, and they're tuned differently, that doesn't turn out to be the case that they'll sound more similar. There are some simple mods that can change the frequency response, and removing the foam can unmuffle them a bit, but I feel like Sennheiser was very careful not to outmod any of its own range with the 58X... What I mean is that it's great for its price, but Sennheiser may have done something, shorter voice coil? Idk for sure, but something, to make it worth less, than the other models of the 600 range, and I doubt MD would want to take sales away from their 6XX either. But that's mostly speculation on my part. There's also a blog post with some simple mods for changing the 58X. You can actually add felt onto the driver to make it sound more similar to an hd600 with better bass extension. It's what I did and I'm enjoying the hell out of it

emmm, you did mention your system in the description. No wonder why the 6xx sounds harsh some time. If you are using a PC, just try to get a cheap sound card like creative sandblaster Xi-fi for $50 or sth, then run it on PC with direct sound USB mode and do the optical out put to ur DAC, you will find the headphone way less harsh. Because that is what the dedicated interface do way better than the interface in cheap DAC.
Hey Joshua, or anyone else, between the HD58x, 6xx, fidelio x2, hifiman he4xx & k7xx which would be best for long 7-8 hour sessions of watching movies/TV and listening to music occasionally, using a fiio e10k for a dac/amp...also open to buying a new dac/amp thats under $100 if needed.....I'm using a HD598se right now btw
I recommend the HD6xx! Non-fatiguing, effortless, clear sound! I expected them to have less low end than they actually do, based on various reviews/opinions I read before buying! I own HE400i, M1060, TH-x00, HD6xx are my daily driver since I got them! I prefer them over all my other headphones, so much I think I'm gonna sell all of them and keep only the 6xx. It truly is the sound I was looking for! (without spending a small fortune) My AMP was the Micca Origen G2, I got a Little Dot mkII for the 6xx and it doesn't disappoint, Senns and tubes are a match made in heaven, better lower end, more detail, enhanced soundstage, clearer sound.
On a side note, I found the FiiO E10K inadequate for classic 598s, more than loud enough, but shallow bass and grainy and slightly harsh highs. Using the boost settings made things much worse, and with all settings the sound became loose and flubbery during loud passages at modest volumes. Hooking the 598s to the same FiiO through a more capable amp really brought them to life, sparkly but smooth highs, more vividly present vocals, well defined bass with a hint of sub bass extension. The FiiO is a pleasing DAC for the price, but it's built-in headphone socket amp is mediocre. So, be careful judging with small amps - you might not be getting the performance any of these headphones are truly capable of. A big mistake I see over and over again in reviews is the naive assumption that a headphone amp is adequate if it is "loud enough", but there is more to it than that. A good headphone amp keeps the headphones more tightly under control, more evenly across all parts of the spectrum.
Thanks I've been having quality control issues. I've gone through around 10 pair of 6xx , I actually bought 2 of them because they only last 3 months. After around 20 months I used both refunds on the Ebony Fostex which I love. Now I'm thinking of getting the 58X for casual headphones. I still have Sundaras, 4XX, and 400i which a baby those. Anything under warranty I'll wear a lot. I think the 58X will be perfect
I just got the hd 6xx , i like it but its not good in gaming compared to gsp models , also i hate the shouting sounds , am running it on my mobo z390 auros , loud enough and sometimes annoying Honestly am a little bit disappointed
I’m really stuck between 6xx vs bt990 . I’ll be using them for gaming . Some of the games I play are battlefield,cod, red dead. I’m worried the 6xx won’t have enough bass. But the bt990 had too much bass. I currently have at 700x.
Tommy Hutchinson I own both the DT 990 and 700x. I agree with the 990s having too much bass for gaming. I would say the 660s bass falls in between the two. Therefore I would look into the the 58X since many people say they are basically identical to the 660s but at a much cheaper price

Hi guys I’m wondering if I should the HD6XX or the HD58’s with a modmic or something. Because what I was originally going to do was get Sennheiser GAME ZERO heedsets with a Mayflower Arc amp/dac. Also I really only game on my pc so I don’t really listen to music Often, well I do, but I’m not a audiophile or anything. And the other thing is I want to get into DCS world and I basically need a trackIR for that and the current headsets I’m using right now are the corsair void pro wireless which aren’t that good and they fall off my head easily just by looking down, left and right. The reason I’m here is because I really don’t know too much about headphones/headsets and I’m so overwhelmed by all the choices and I want to make a one time purchase because I wasted 80 dollars on those crappy void pro’s when I should of done my research in the first place. I just ordered the HD 6xx's and the mayflower arc. I may get a mod mic temporarily until I can get my rode procaster. I cannot wait to get it all set up and listen to some crisp audio. What did you do in the end and how is everything?
I don't have either of these headphones but a good mix sounds like getting the 6XX but using a bass boost feature on a quality amp, best of both worlds then
xtlm they would, I never heard the 6xx, I only own the 58x, but people who own both said that with the foam out it sounds VERY similar!! I think that sennheiser wasn't trying to make a cheaper sounding headphones, and just bc there 150 doesn't mean that they sound worse, there cheaper bc they're packaged cheaper not bc there cheaper sounding, (btw massdrop themselves said this) they were trying to make a overall more "fun sounding" headphones. And that's why in this I disagree with Josh, i don't think that the 58x are Evan a drop worse, I just think that there different and whatever sound Sig u prefer, that's what you'll get. P.s. many comments, if not most of people who bought the 58x and also own the 6xx like the 58x more. So Evan though I never heard the 6xx, I can assume the reality from the comments..
Just was a thought I had. If people have reported that, that's a neat option to have! I am probably going to pick a pair up while the current drop is going on!
I think you're spot on on all fronts. I got both because, well why not? I found that the 6XX's have "less" bass but that the bass is more articulate. It's really pronounced when you listen to something like Bela Fleck's "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo". The 58X's have a nice round bass response but you can't hear the detail of the bass string's vibration, it's just not resolving the bass detail like the 6XX's do). I've found that both the 6XX's and the 58X's can be shouty in the mids depending on who the vocalist is. For instance Norah Jones' voice on songs like "Don't know Why I Didn't Come" can get shouty and punchy on the 58X's and is much more enjoyable on the 6XX's. My conclusion is that I'm not disappointed with either. If you want to listen critically the 6XX's are a great option to hear every detail but for a nice relaxed listening experience the 58X Jubilees have a very pleasant smooth sound signature conducive to long listening sessions. Appreciate the channel. Keep up the good work.

Have you tried removing the foam from the 58x? I have the 58x without the foam and things got clearer without the foam lost a little bit of bass but not too much
@@asleeperj I did remove the foam almost immediately from my 58x's. I probably should've said that my comparison was based on the 58x's without that foam behind the drivers and the stock 6xx's. I like them both and, interestingly enough, I really like the 58x. There's something about the non-fatiguing way they reproduce music that I put them on more often than the 6xx.

You just saved me $50 as the 58X seems to fit for me as I was worried about the power to drive the 6XX (mostly laptop and phone use) and the low end performance (worried I'd always think "should have gotten the better bass") and being 25% cheaper these sound like the right call!

My 6XX took so long to ship (5 months) that I bought a suitable (portable) amp/dac to play around with while I waited. That almost doubled my investment, but they work so well together I’m more than happy. I think the 58XX is better value for a beginner like myself for that reason, but I don’t regret the purchases, still an impressive amount of SQ for $$$.

Very interesting comparison. I own the HD58X, the HD660s and the Focal Elex and I have to say that the HD58X is superior compared to the HD660S. The mid range is nearly the same but the HD58X has definitvely more bass extension and the highs of the HD660S often are a little bit to crisp for me. So the HD58X in my opinion is the best headphone of the 6-series. I do not own the HD6XX but if you say the mids are a little bit more pronounced with the HD6XX then the HD58X is the better choice for me.
Compared to the Elex the HD58X has nearly the same tonality with al little less peaks in the upper mids and highs. Bass extension are nearly the same on both only the amount of bass is on the HD58X nearly 3-4dB more then the Elex has. But the Elex is more refined, has more punch and the better acceleration and dynamics. Let me say... the HD58X is like a minor version of the Elex sounding a little bit more warm. The bestheadphone below 150 USD and maybe one of the best headphones up to 500 USD!

Absolutely agree. I own the 58x , and 660s. They're really close , but as you described. The 58x is superior imo as well.
@Tom Alawatte I wouldn't say that the 58X is bass heavy, it just has sub-bass, there's not a crazy drop in low range unlike a lot of open headphones which is why I think the 58X is interesting

I find the 58X to be the best balanced overall. With the gives and takes between the 2, I feel the 58X earns more points across the spectrum.

Your closing argument confuses me. Most people tend to agree that the 58x is a bit brighter than the 6xx, which has this so called "Sennheiser veil", that makes them relaxing and laid back, darker.
I have the 6xx and my roommate has the 58x. I may have to listen again but I remember the 6xx's being brighter and having more clarity overall.
If the 6XX has the Sennheiser veil then the 58X has the Sennheiser cloak.

Hi Josh. I have 58x and 650. 650 is a bit too warm and thick and dark for me, so I pull down the mid bass hump a bit with eq. I like the 58x stock, the way it is. And it sounds great plugged into an iPad even without an amp. I also have an HD 600 and I love it when mated with higher end equipment
I find it interesting you find the 6XX to be shouty at times. Yeah I have HD58X, HD600 and HD6XX, and while the mids on HD58X/600 are very similar, maybe a bit more forward on HD600, I feel the mids on HD6XX to be definitely recessed.
DIfferences in amps and age (by age I am implying how well you hear) and music preferences and tolarance to treble. For example I'm young (less than 30) and I find Aune X1S to be too trebley, using HE 4XX and B&W P7 and there is just too much treble in vocals, anime, movies.
I use HD58X and HD6XX I love both , but HD6XX sound way better to me … they sound more dark more polite like the music is coming in slow motion also they have something that I cant find in any Headphone that I used , They are soft and dark but at the same time analytical without being over bright … For me they sound better than more expensive Headphone ( I guess its the sound signature that I love)

I own every 6 series from the original 580s and if you take the Dampening material out of the 58X your highs are superior to the HD650s or 6XX and actually sound almost identical to the 660s .
I still prefer on some music to keep the dampening material in so I bought two of the 58Xs so I'm not constantly having to pull them apart .
They are so close to the 660s $500 Headphones I returned mine.
Easily the Best Buy in Audiophile headphones in a decade .
But the 58X do not scale as well with higher end amps so I still think the HD650s or their twin the 6XX are still a keeper.

Hey, Robbie, I'm trying to find information on this series, and I'm curious to know which one is closer to the HD600s, and how close they are. I'm considering procuring one for my own use due to the relatively low cost but I want to make sure I'm not making a mistake.
You see, I demoed both the 600s and the 650s off of a number of middle to high-quality sources at an audio store a while back, and I absolutely hated the way the 650s sounded. I would describe them as sounding "underwater." Now objectively, I know this is because they're very warm headphones and I tend to prefer neutral, maybe even treble-heavy sound signatures. Because of this, I adored the HD600s, they sounded much, much better than their price tag suggested. Next to a pair of Beyerdynamic T1s and some other megabuck headphones, I really found I didn't care much for the higher-priced models. They struck me as being roughly on par in terms of overall clarity. And yeah, that's really the operating word for me. Clarity. I lean towards wide, precise soundstages and detail. If I could afford HD800s, which were also being demoed there, I'd take 'em in a heartbeat.
So yeah, would you say either Massdrop model sounds more or less like the HD600? If so, what are the differences?

Personally I only own the 58x, never heard the 6xx so I don't know really to compare but when I took out the foam, the soundstage opened up a bit and it sounded slightly less muddy and overall a bit more clear. People that own both said that it sounded practically like the 6xx when they did that..
Either way, there's a forum on diy (somewhere down this comment section)on simple mods which would make the 58x sound like the 660s!!!

If I'm not mistaken, I think there's also a mod for the 58x to sound like the 650/6xx.
The reason why u can do all these mods (I think) is bc when u take out the foams, the magnet is open unlike the rest of the 6 line. This allows you to experiment different things to make it sound like different headphones..

Regarding the 6xx,I don't think u can bc the magnet is covered as apposed To the 58x which is opened behind the foam.

i watched a video a while back showing that the foam does not have any noticeable difference. Negligible difference even when measured with hesdphone testing instruments.

I just have to mention that with different AMP, they can sound VERY different. The sound stage will be way larger and deeper with the 6xx than the 58x which only open up the wide but the not the height and depth. And the tonality will be very different with different AMP. Therefore it is important to show your whole testing setup. Otherwise just the cheaper headphone is always better with a phone or laptop.
My moon ace NEO($3k)+HD6xx sounds way better than the schiit modi2+magni3($300)+ HD800s. Because all the good headphones are like supercars, how great they perform depend on the drivers as well.

Just picked up a pair of 58s for 100 bucks second hand. My superlux 668bs just broke. (Surprise.) I'm very excited.
I had the 6XX .. then got the 58X .... and sold the 6XX after listening to both. the 58X seems a bit better overall to me. Clarity is the same to my ears. the 58X seem a bit more clear actually, I don't know why that is. My AMP is a 02/ODAC from Mayflower.

"Shouty" is such a weird audiophile term. It makes it sound like the singers change the way they sing. I think its better to say that the vocals stick out more than the instruments. That is what I found the 58x sounded like compared to my Denon ah d2000s.
I think what they mean is harsh, because sticking out doesn't quite explain it either, as it feels vocals are only sounding higher, ratter than piercing.
This stand is where i'd put my Massdrop exclusive headphones...

Interesting and very different from my own impressions, while the HD6XX it's very detailed and technical, I just don't enjoy their sound (too dark with prominent and not so well defined bass) compared to the HD600 and HD58X, which I really like, specially the HD58X.

No! it cannot be cheaper alternative. 58x have another>cheaper>280(58x) series based driver! 660s - have 700 series driver!
I find HE 4XX alot better over 660S.... the drivers are made of pretty much same materials and the materials for headphones are VERY common. Plastic, metal, magnets etc etc. All that is different is the sound signature and headphone housing.
Loki Odinson The 660S driver has no more relationship to the HD700 driver than the 58X driver to those lower lines. The 58X is NO DOUBT in the Sennheiser 6 series family.

The HD6xx might be more detailed but the HD58x has a more pleasing and balanced sound signature. HD6xx has a bump in the low mids (around 300-500hz) which makes vocals sound extra chesty. Listening to Chris Botti, it over accentuates the lower body of trumpet sounds. For that reason, I can see how you can say the HD6xx is better for female vocals since this bump can give female voices a bit more body. Whereas for male voices, it could sound too chesty. This is the most immediate difference i noticed between these 2 headphones. The HD6xx also has less extended bass, but this is not as noticeable as the difference in the low mids.
HD660S also suffers from pumping 300-500 Hz - the violin starts to sound like a viola, and the singer grows fat by 40 kg )) HD580 has a less noisy middle, even compared to HD600 - because right behind the capsule it has no plastic petals (and behind the capsule of HD600 they are).
I have the 6xx powered by the jds labs element dac/. I listen to most genres of music and play games like pubg and overwatch on them and I'm very impressed. I think a tube amp is in my near future.
The 650 would benefit greatly from an OTL amp such as the Dark voice, Crack, Woo Audio 3,2 etc... They will sing with tube amps such as those. Im not sure what amp you should pair with the 58x or 660s as the lower impedance will not give you as good results with the OTL amps.
Hd58x for the win!! They’re cheaper because there’s no fancy presentation box and are not as analytical as the hd6xx. More fun and masks harshness that the hd6xx may reveal on some recordings that can make the listening experience Fatiguing.
These need to be compared on a OTL tube amp. That’s when they really shine, especially the 6xx
Hey Josh, have you ever listened to a Stax headphone? Picked up the SR-34 combo for only €20,-, about $17,-. It sounds absolutely amazing. I would say it has a lot of the same qualities as the HD6XX with some extra detail because of it being electret "earspeakers".

I use the stock Cable from the hd650 on the hd600 and it makes a big difference in sound. it is more clear.

The 58x absolutely lacks in the higher end. It lacks the airiness of higher end headphones, that 'magic' factor. They sound great but they don't have that 'something' that really gives you chill bumps on airy sounding songs. They are relaxed and balanced.
At the price, they are great and I totally recommend them, but they don't 'beat' the higher priced versions, and you will find yourself switching to your others just to get that sweet upper range.
What about the 6xx?
I primary use headphones with my phone. I was leaning more towards the 6xx. Would these go well with a dragonfly dac? Either black or red? Or any other suggestions?
It depends on if you care about battery usage: if not, get the 6xx and the red for the best experience

I will compare them with HD599, HD58X have way more sub bass , warmer and more analytic . But HD599 are way more open , without sub bass , they are over bright , and soundstage feels big . On HD58X its like hearing the voice in front of you on HD599 its like you are on a bigger room . For my I use both of them , for Stereo music HD58X are perfect and for movies and games HD599.
I've got the same two too. I found the hd599 was quite 'bassy' (for me, not necessarily because the signature is a V). HOWEVER, that has eased off. I really enjoy using the 599 on my Samsung S8. The hd58x has longer/deeper bass frequency response. When I first listened to them, it reminded a bit of that (I think) Dolby sound advert before movies (sorry I don't go to cinema often, so it might not be Dolby). I think I'm talking about sub bass. Anyway, IMO the bass is not overstated, just more extension on the HD58x. I thought the treble was lovely on the 58x. Detail's better too than the 599 but not by huge amounts. I'm trying to trial a dragonfly red to see if it helps/makes a difference to the 58x. Interesting side note. Another TH-cam headphone reviewer says it's known that the bass of Sennheisers ease off as the pads (presumably eaecups) wear in, as I swear the bass was more significant on the 599 when I first got them. I like both but actually prefer the 599 for music currently. I think if I can get a headphone amp, I at least know I'm driving the 58x appropriately. I reckon my phone isn't doing them justice. Any thoughts?
@@gazzabazzazza you want see any difference buying something else than s8 on 58x trust me i had s7edge and s9 now i use lg v30. Samsung s7 had to enable hires audio dont forget that. Also on s9 it has change name and ita dolby on both of theae settings they muat enable the dac on Samsung's i gueas , on lg it says highres but ita always on by default. Anyways 58x on lg v30 sound natural ans amazing at default settings eq. On s7 s9 they sound really boomy i had to lower bass, same happens to hd599 they sound very boomy on mids with every phone i have test them. But not lg v30 i bealive v30 is more flat ? Also i have an old htc 10 that it has boom setting for headphones... That also must be enabled and also sounds the same as s7 s9. About power 58X are easy to drive so your mobile is perfect just enable highres or dolby option on the menu after connecting the headphones and after thatu can eq them to fil ypur needs.

perfectly possible that I won’t hear any difference. We know the debate about having anything more than 44.1khz sampling is a big one (Nyquist theorem etc). I think it makes sense that recording the original source audio at a higher rate may bring some benefit. Also, a higher bitrate for audio formats is true too but is not linear. For example, you really can hear a difference between 128 and 192 bitrate. However, can someone hear a difference between 320 bit and flac? I’m not sure. It’s suggested in blind tests the answer is no but others think they can. In fact, a blind test in 2013 archimago.blogspot.com/2013/02/high-bitrate-mp3-internet-blind-test_3422.html found more people thinking that the flac files sounded worse!

yep, i have dolby atmos as an option on my phone. This is not the same as high-res audio, I don’t think. I thought it sounded ok when it was switched on but I don’t like to modify my audio unless I have to. My understanding is dolby atmos adds vertical positioning to surround sound, so I’m not sure how that would affect a 2 channel audio signal. I guess it’s maybe a bit like virtual surround sound or something.

it mentions both UHQ audio playback and the UHQ upscaler. It’s not clear when the UHQ audio playback kicks in though. The description suggests it works when it thinks audio has been mastered at >44.1khz.
However, we then have the problem of the android audio driver forcing resampling at 44.1khz, no matter what. The alternative to this are audio apps that claim to have their own drivers, which can maybe bypass the android driver and reach the phone DAC directly e.g. UAPP. The Android driver is a problem IMO. Pass through to an external DAC ‘might’ make a difference then.
Interestingly, UAPP say that exynos chipped Samsung handset (s6-10 AND the plus handsets) all resample to 192khz, no matter what (even DSD music gets resampled).

As to the UHQ rescaler, this seems like a waste of time to me. It just guesses at how the music might sound like (at least according to samsung’s website entry for the Note 5):

I don’t have the difference options of bit and bit/bandwidth. Also, rescaling is not the same as resampling, from what I’ve read.

@Gary Thompson Can you please explain why do you prefer 599 for music? I've got them recently on amazon prime deal for 99$, but I see all the hype for 58x thinking if I should get them instead. Are they worth extra 50$?
I'm stuck between these two as I'm trying to find good headphones for both music/movies but also something that would be good for gaming. Such as rainbow six siege, Witcher, warfrqme. Mostly FPS and RPG style games. Any advice?

No, not enough juice to power 300 ohms, my Moto G7 is usually just at the limit with most music with 58X. If I use EQ compensation in Onkyo player then maybe 3extra dB of output wouldn't hurt. If you want 6XX then portable amp/DAC is a rather necessary.
Have you tried to take off the backing material yet? Z said he found that simple mod made the 58x sound much better. What is your impression?
TRINHinc I know ur not asking me but I prefer it with the pads:) maybe just me but I’ve seen several others agree. Great thing is that is is EASY to do so you really have both options. Def more treble with the pads removed, but the overall sound with them in to me is just wonderful, and a little less harsh to my ears

I don't know. I think the Jubilee is better in every way. I own both. Low end and high end are cleaner and clearer. I think the Sennheiser veil is quite prevalent on the 6xx whereas it is lifted in the Jubilee. I like the 6xx when I want a more relaxing listen. The Jubilee seems more technical and faster. Zeos reviews thinks that the 660 and the 58x are exactly the same when you remove the foam from the 58x. He thinks they're the same exact drivers too. Just saying.
SHAWN WATSON I have the 600 and now the 58x jubilee. I gotta say for me I actually prefer the jubilee...with the pads NOT removed. It’s a really great headphone that’s for sure.

Hi Joshua, I really wanna know if the build quality on HD6XX is comparable to 650/660s? Im only talking about the build quality, Is it really okay-ish compared to 660s? I have heard HDD6xx and especially HD58xx has some bad cheap plastic on the lower part of them which break easily. is it true?

You know what if the 58X have extra foam behind the driver then it would explain the difference in sound signature. If you would remove that foam then 58X should be a lot closer to 6XX.
There's actually a huge thread on SuperBestAudioFriends about mods for the 58X. Since the drivers are not the same, and they're tuned differently, that doesn't turn out to be the case that they'll sound more similar.
There are some simple mods that can change the frequency response, and removing the foam can unmuffle them a bit, but I feel like Sennheiser was very careful not to outmod any of its own range with the 58X... What I mean is that it's great for its price, but Sennheiser may have done something, shorter voice coil? Idk for sure, but something, to make it worth less, than the other models of the 600 range, and I doubt MD would want to take sales away from their 6XX either. But that's mostly speculation on my part. There's also a blog post with some simple mods for changing the 58X. You can actually add felt onto the driver to make it sound more similar to an hd600 with better bass extension. It's what I did and I'm enjoying the hell out of it

Changing pads on the senn headphones seems to not really ever turn out well

emmm, you did mention your system in the description. No wonder why the 6xx sounds harsh some time. If you are using a PC, just try to get a cheap sound card like creative sandblaster Xi-fi for $50 or sth, then run it on PC with direct sound USB mode and do the optical out put to ur DAC, you will find the headphone way less harsh. Because that is what the dedicated interface do way better than the interface in cheap DAC.
Hey Joshua, or anyone else, between the HD58x, 6xx, fidelio x2, hifiman he4xx & k7xx which would be best for long 7-8 hour sessions of watching movies/TV and listening to music occasionally, using a fiio e10k for a dac/amp...also open to buying a new dac/amp thats under $100 if needed.....I'm using a HD598se right now btw
I recommend the HD6xx! Non-fatiguing, effortless, clear sound! I expected them to have less low end than they actually do, based on various reviews/opinions I read before buying! I own HE400i, M1060, TH-x00, HD6xx are my daily driver since I got them! I prefer them over all my other headphones, so much I think I'm gonna sell all of them and keep only the 6xx. It truly is the sound I was looking for! (without spending a small fortune)
My AMP was the Micca Origen G2, I got a Little Dot mkII for the 6xx and it doesn't disappoint, Senns and tubes are a match made in heaven, better lower end, more detail, enhanced soundstage, clearer sound.
On a side note, I found the FiiO E10K inadequate for classic 598s, more than loud enough, but shallow bass and grainy and slightly harsh highs.
Using the boost settings made things much worse, and with all settings the sound became loose and flubbery during loud passages at modest volumes.
Hooking the 598s to the same FiiO through a more capable amp really brought them to life, sparkly but smooth highs, more vividly present vocals, well defined bass with a hint of sub bass extension.
The FiiO is a pleasing DAC for the price, but it's built-in headphone socket amp is mediocre.
So, be careful judging with small amps - you might not be getting the performance any of these headphones are truly capable of.
A big mistake I see over and over again in reviews is the naive assumption that a headphone amp is adequate if it is "loud enough", but there is more to it than that. A good headphone amp keeps the headphones more tightly under control, more evenly across all parts of the spectrum.

Thanks I've been having quality control issues. I've gone through around 10 pair of 6xx , I actually bought 2 of them because they only last 3 months. After around 20 months I used both refunds on the Ebony Fostex which I love. Now I'm thinking of getting the 58X for casual headphones. I still have Sundaras, 4XX, and 400i which a baby those. Anything under warranty I'll wear a lot. I think the 58X will be perfect
I just got the hd 6xx , i like it but its not good in gaming compared to gsp models , also i hate the shouting sounds , am running it on my mobo z390 auros , loud enough and sometimes annoying

I’m really stuck between 6xx vs bt990 . I’ll be using them for gaming . Some of the games I play are battlefield,cod, red dead. I’m worried the 6xx won’t have enough bass. But the bt990 had too much bass. I currently have at 700x.
Tommy Hutchinson I own both the DT 990 and 700x. I agree with the 990s having too much bass for gaming. I would say the 660s bass falls in between the two. Therefore I would look into the the 58X since many people say they are basically identical to the 660s but at a much cheaper price

Hi guys I’m wondering if I should the HD6XX or the HD58’s with a modmic or something. Because what I was originally going to do was get Sennheiser GAME ZERO heedsets with a Mayflower Arc amp/dac. Also I really only game on my pc so I don’t really listen to music Often, well I do, but I’m not a audiophile or anything. And the other thing is I want to get into DCS world and I basically need a trackIR for that and the current headsets I’m using right now are the corsair void pro wireless which aren’t that good and they fall off my head easily just by looking down, left and right. The reason I’m here is because I really don’t know too much about headphones/headsets and I’m so overwhelmed by all the choices and I want to make a one time purchase because I wasted 80 dollars on those crappy void pro’s when I should of done my research in the first place. I just ordered the HD 6xx's and the mayflower arc. I may get a mod mic temporarily until I can get my rode procaster. I cannot wait to get it all set up and listen to some crisp audio. What did you do in the end and how is everything?

58x/6xx is a straight upgrade in every way except for the soundstage, which is noticeably smaller.

I think that sennheiser wasn't trying to make a cheaper sounding headphones, and just bc there 150 doesn't mean that they sound worse, there cheaper bc they're packaged cheaper not bc there cheaper sounding, (btw massdrop themselves said this) they were trying to make a overall more "fun sounding" headphones. And that's why in this I disagree with Josh, i don't think that the 58x are Evan a drop worse, I just think that there different and whatever sound Sig u prefer, that's what you'll get.
P.s. many comments, if not most of people who bought the 58x and also own the 6xx like the 58x more. So Evan though I never heard the 6xx, I can assume the reality from the comments..
