    I was 21 and bought HD600 when they came out. Not because I was an audiophile, but because I walked into a store after getting a new job that paid a fair bit more. The 600 reputation have definitely held up better than I have a quarter of a century later haha.

    I'm a 600 guy also. Best one in the lineup. I have a kitchen sink model and I agree that the vocals are just spot on. Amazing and sound so natural. It can really play any music well which I think is one misconception. It does have enough bass punch and overall is very balanced with a bit of warmth. Not overly warm like 6xx. Highly recommend it above any of the others and can be a benchmark standard in any collection.

    im gaming, and music lover, (not professional music person) so i got hd660s, bigger soundstage and very smooth in vocal. 4years using it, never regret. up until today, still using it will continue using this. suitable for my daily use, feel blessed getting this earlier compare to others. i dont wish to upgrade or downgrade, just nice in price and practically use for my own daily drive.

    My favorite is the 6XX. I've always preferred laid back sound signatures and while I've tried the 6XX and the 600, and think they're both amazing, the HD 6XX just has a warmer, effortless sound that I can listen to for hours at a time. That more engaging low end is so satisfying and tight, and while the vocal clarity is better on the 600, the 6XX is still no slouch.

    • @biomorphic

      @@Tripokaridos22 The cost difference has nothing to do with the sound. They do all cost the same to produce, maybe there is a $20 difference in the drivers, but I don't even think so. I got the HD580 in 2005 for $154 shipped brand new in the box. Sennheiser discontinued the HD580 cuz it is the 600 for dirt cheap. Same driver. Back in the day they said the 650 would "continue to improve with better DACs/amps" but the 580/600 wouldn't. This has not been my experience. I have heard more reviewers and testers say that the 6XX is identical to the 650. I have had a chance to try them side-by-side, and of course YMMV but I did not notice a significant difference. It also doesn't strike me as extremely veiled, another frequent concern about Senns in general and the 650 in particular. It has respectable clarity across the spectrum, despite the midrange emphasis. You're not losing out having a 6XX. Haven't tried the 58X but I'd like to.

    • @rene837
      @rene837 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The HD6XX and HD650 are exactly the same headphone, just with a different colour coating. Sennheiser even confirmed this in the past.
      Edit: audible differences could either be attributed to the usual unit variation, though Sennheiser seems to have quite low tolerances on the HD650 in that regard, or they could stem from the pad revision in 2021 where HD650s were still sold with the old pads but new HD6XX drops already had the new ones fitted or the other way round.

    • @bigworm150
      @bigworm150 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tested both, and if they are not the same, they a surely close enough to be a unit variation. I've heard more difference between revision of the same headphones than between 650 and 6XX

    • @Rsalmond83
      @Rsalmond83 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe unit variation is a thing, but having both 650 with new pads and 6XX with new pads, they sound slightly different in that the 650 sounds more veiled while the 6XX sounds less veiled. 6XX for around $175 on sale is a steal!

    • @rene837
      @rene837 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Rsalmond83 The new pads Sennheiser released in i think 2021 did alter the sound of the HD600-line headphones a bit, generally making them slightly brighter and a little less warm sounding. Maybe the HD650 you bought still had the old pads on it while the HD6XX already had the new ones fitted. Generally they are the same headphone, but unit variation is a thing as well, especially in the treble region. However, Sennheisers HD650s seem to have quite low tolerances of unit variation. Beyerdynamic for example is much worse on that regard, especially on their "low budget" headphones like the DT770 or DT990.

I recently purchased a pair of HD 6XX's from Drop when they were on sale for $199, which also sound great. @@dpginthehouse Oh, that's a tough one. At $200, the HD 660s is a steal. If you're going to use them for everything (i.e. music and video games), go for the HD 660s because the imaging is far superior over the HD 6xx. I actually prefer the HD 660s because I like to hear everything, but on certain songs they can become bright and fatiguing over long listening sessions. For gaming (if you don't need a mic), they're way better. The HD 6xx are probably more enjoyable for long periods of listening and many people prefer their more traditional sound. You'll probably still be able to get the HD 6xx next year, but this will likely be your last chance to get a pair of HD 660s' and even if you don't like them, you could sell them at a minimal loss.

      In fact, I’d actually take it even further and also include the HD 565. That was my first good headphone and was Sennheiser’s TOTL before they introduced the HD 580.
      Don’t get caught up in a series # because both the drivers and the pads of both are easily swapable with any 6 series headphone to this day. I still have my 565’s in operable condition although worse for wear since they’re over 30yo! Still better soundstage than any 6 Series.

    Funny timing :) I just tried the 560s, 58x, 600, 6xx, and 660s2 and again came to the conclusion that I like the 600 the best. I spent some time figuring out why and I actually think that if you overlay their frequency responses you'll see why - the 58x and 660s2 rise in the upper mids, dip, spike, then start a downtrend, while the 600 and 6xx have a more typical rise in the upper mids and a slow roll off in the treble. If makes more sense if you just look at the FR graphs. Between the 600 and 6xx I just like the 600 better, I think between those 2 it's just a matter of personal taste. The 6xx over-does it in the warmth IMO, and the 600 sounds more natural to me.

    The HD6xx have been confirmed to be an HD650 several times now by Sennheiser reps. Differences in treble can usually be explained by pad wear, with newer/ fresher pads exhibiting more treble energy, and treble fading as the pads wear in. Not a big difference but it happens.
    Where the 58x at? I know speculation is that it uses a "5 series driver" but impedance and driver design doesn't agree with that theory. The driver definitely isnt as capable as the 660s 150 ohm driver, but I feel like the 58x belong in the 6 series discussion. They're about 90% as good as the 6xx for an even cheaper price.

      the HD800s are brilliant except for the nasty treble peak which may or may not affect a particular listener. For me, the treble peak is what renders the HD800 to lose in the tonality/timbre category to the HD600 even tho they beat it in soundstage/imaging/microdetail etc hence why the HD600 has more NATURAL sound in my opinion. :)

    I aquired few years back some vintage headphones such as those 600ohm Beyerdynamics DT880s (studio), DT990 and DT550 and thought this is it.. after hearing the og Sennheiser HD600 and HD650 at a HifiExpo, I didn't think much of them back then. Now years later after buying the og Sennheiser HD600 and HD650 used from the flea market and giving them new pads, I was pleasently surprised. I initially thought I would have loved the HD600 with my Lehmann BCL because of the neutrality, but after hearing the HD650 with the OTL Darkvoice 336SE I was sold. Maybe it has to do with the music that I listen to and the fact that I like to crank up the volume up quite a bit.. With revealing headphones like the Beyerdynamics, my ears start to bleed after few minutes, but with the HD650, nothing, absolutely nothing. Though I have to admit that I fear I might get a hearing loss at some point with these listening levels, but I'll be damn, no fatigue what-so-ever, awesome!.. Oh, right.. So I ended up using HD650 for music, HD600 for editing and HD58x for gaming, felt that they all served a different purpose.

    Just listened to HD600 for the first time today. I think it sounds weak, anemic where the bass needs to slam a bit but I also find it very relaxing to listen to.
    My amp is FIIO7. The Bluetooth one. When connected to my iMac the sound is a bit louder but still lower than HD660S, by quite a bit. I can’t listen to HD660S at max volume, while HD600 leaves me wanting more volume. Another thing I’ve noticed is that HD660S gets a little piercing on certain words. I and You. In the song Rent , by Pet Shop Boys, it gets a bit out of range. It often feels that it’s right at the edge of becoming unpleasant with many other songs, while I never noticed this with HD600,most likely because the volume doesn’t reach as high. I tried to lower the volume when I listened to HD660S, and it solved a bit of this issue but once you know it’s there, you can still hear it a bit.
    HD600 might be the better sounding headphone, but I still prefer the kick and move of the HD660S, even though at times it can be a bit piercing.
    Edit.
    A year later and HD660S doesn’t get much listening time because I purchased HD660S2, and it has everything I missed on the 660S. It has a warm sound that work on a vast majority of music. Except rock. I don’t find them suitable for rock as they are too warm, and it makes it feel like the treble are rolled off. So in that case, HD660S or HD600 are the better choice.
    For other than that, HD660S2, wins every time.

    I'm still using HD595s. You can't buy them anymore so I got a backup pair off e-bay. I've restored and remastered over 16,000 songs on them so I know how to judge audio with them and find tiny details that need fixing. Even subtle tape dropouts that don't always stand out on speakers are obvious. I think the HD600 would be better for listening if you are not analyzing.

    Oh, I think it all started around 1989 with the HD 560 ... at least that is the year I bought mine and discovered midrange-centric earphones at a decent price. I kept those until 2003 when I upgraded to HD580 with removed foam inside, and HD600 grills. I kept that all the way to 2021 when finally I got frustrated that the 600 series (I include hd580 as part of the 600 series) just didn't make my toe tap or my head bob, and upgraded (for me) to the Drop HD58x... very happy to have bass from a senn finally. I managed to pick up a used 660S for £200, and a used iFi Hip-Dac for £20 (I got very lucky). I use them both every single day for listening to: music, audiobooks, podcasts, gaming (wide sound stage and detailed imaging make them very good for FPS), and even Teams/Zoom for work (this is simply due to them being set up on my desk, I often wish I couldn't hear my colleagues as clearly as I can!). The iFi Hip-Dac is a fantastic pairing for the 660S because it 'fixes' the one major criticism a lot of reviewers had - sub-bass. It has a physical hardware switch called XBASS that increases the sub-bass without distorting the rest of the sound signature.
    In most hobbies, gear acquisition syndrome is a powerful consumerist force to contend with, but I have virtually zero interest in upgrading to anything else. Having said that, I would like to hear an 800s to learn what I'm missing out on... But I'll avoid that temptation, because I don't wish to spend that amount of money for incremental improvements, I'd rather buy some nice speakers for my lounge instead.

    I bought my HD600 headphones in about 2003/4 just after the HD650 came out.
    I listened to both and preferred the HD600 for the genres of music that I like, namely jazz, blues, soul, gospel, folk, and classical music, all played on acoustic instruments (except for electric guitars and electric organs in jazz, blues, soul,, and gospel), and both instrumental and vocal music in those genres. The icing on the cake was that the HD600 was less expensive than the HD650.
    For those genres, the HD600 driven by a decent tube headphone amp is a match made in heaven. My go to tube headphone amp for my HD600 headphones is the Cayin HA-1A (original version), which can switch from ultralinear mode for more drive and impact to triode mode for a richer and more liquid sound, and has an output impedance setting knob which enables matching to a wide variety of headphones.
    Also, using on the HD600 a cable with balanced connectors for the balanced outputs of my Pono player, produces great sound for a portable system. In balanced mode, the Pono player has no problem driving the HD600 headphones to levels that are more than loud enough for me without distorting.
    At this point, those headphone systems are definitely oldies, but goodies, but then again, so am I.😉
    Recently, for improved portability, I have been using 7Hz Timeless IEMs with my Pono player, and to me they sound remarkably similar to the HD600 headphones with the Pono Player.
    Over the past 20 years of using my HD600 headphones, I have only had to replace the earpads and the cable once.

    Great review and accurate analysis by Joshua. I’ve tried 600, 6xx, 660 s2, 560s :
    600 : crispness/clarity wise it was the best but very narrow soundstage and treble was piercing I felt.
    600 s2 was the worst of all - lacking clarity and felt muddy. Does not justify the price as well.
    560 s was good but lacked the quality of 600 series in short.
    6xx : Best soundstage, impactful Bass, extremely relaxing and can listen for hours without hurting my ears. Not as crisp and clear as 600 but did not matter to me -it is the most enjoyable, best value for money and why the most popular amongst the rest (it’s not just the price, but most enjoyable for a normal listener).
    Anyways, these are very subjective - just my personal experience. Returned the rest and enjoying the 6xx, will buy one more of 6xx if I ever break it (4 years+ and hopefully more).

    Such an important video! Thanks for it :) I finally understood what's with all the variations of the HD600 series.

    I haven't tried the 6XXs, but I replaced my HD600s with HD650s; the sound signature is better suited for the music I listen to and is much more engaging in games. Still, both are incredible headphones.

    I got the old blue 600 and also an Hd800, the musical an balanced sound is real nice on not so high end sources. The HD800 only shines when the rest is perfect.

    Hi Josh, recently bought open box 660s2 for only £269, sounds great with the bass , just a bit better over my 6xx with custom cans bass mod, I have fitted thick 1 1/4” pads to , the 660s2 is about £399 now it was £359 only couple of weeks ago, I like 660s2 followed by moded 6xx, am now on a look out for the 600 now as you think it’s another great headphone. Regards mark

    Small hack for the 600, two half pieces of felt on the inside behind the screen which you need to remove. An increase of lower bass. I would guess by plus 3 db.

    Hey Josh, fantastic video! Would absolutely love it if you could do one on the Sennheiser IE line up (200 to 900)!

    Amazing video. Love the quality and the detail. Great editing. Also really informative for someone like me who has no idea which HD600 series headphone to buy. Not easy to go into a store and compare these days.

    Hello, I am completely new to the audiophile scene. I usually listen to jazz and classic rock (Beatles, CCR, Eagles and stuff) and would like to know which of these would be better suited for such type of music? I currently use Shure 215 and Bose QC35ii if that helps. Thank you.

    i had all of the HD6 line up! but when i hear the HD660S2 win me immediately! the original HD660 was good but not good enough mostly on high volume something missing and not sounded that good! the HD660S2 takes the place in my heart!

    At the moment the 660s2 is down to 399.99 on sale on Sennheisers own website. I wonder how that would change your perspective on it. I, like many others, own a 6xx currently and have previously had a HD600 and love this series.

    6XX vs 600? Not easy. I love 6XX's with 60/70's: rock, blues rock or jazz with electric guitar, and i also love the 600s with orchestral & acoustic stuff. 600s timbre is co close to the real sound of violins, cellos, double basses etc. They are also more detal which really helps while listening to compositions written for for exemple 50 string instruments, and the lows are not mixed with the mids as it is in the 6XXs. On the other hand: 6XX I can have on my head for a really long time, feel relaxed and happy, with 600s - not really, this presance of treble gives me a headache after some time. 600s are not bad with blues and rock, but I prefer the bass & overall tonality of the 6XX here, gives more of a club concert vibe. I have also a question: my 600s has the newest design, and information that it was made in Ireland - is those bit sharp treble fixable with diffrent pads maybe? And one last thing - I feel like the soundstage of my 600s is same as 6XX's and the midrage presance is for shure not bigger than in the 6XX. Is it like this only with this recent version o the 600s? PS: my collection of senns' ends now on the 560s and I got to say... I need all 3 of them. Each one does to the music something in excepcional way, but 560s are the most fatiguing to me (any pads suggestion is also very welcome, here) but those are also the fastest, most critical, got best imaging and has widest soundstage.

    I got the 660S for $275 brand new and it's been great. I was drawn to the wider stage and what I perceived as bump in detail over the 6XX. I feel like people dont give the 660S credit because it was twice as expensive as the 6XX but its not anymore.
