    This is not the win that they think it is. I've worked in government and military contracting, there are already policies in place that forbid the use of Chinese materials in military equipment. By banning the use from all agencies that receive federal funding, all you've done is force the small town fire department to buy from the (now) only game in town, at whatever price that Skylandio decides to set. Also, now the fireman flying it isn't flying the DJI he probably has the same model of at home too, but I bet the FD can buy a training package for a tidy sum... this is an obvious lobbying cash grab disguised under pearl clutching.

    • @RebelByNature
      @RebelByNature 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      This is not about your use, it's about federal gov't use. Consider a DJI drone being used by the FBI to help in counter intelligence surveillance against Chinese nationals here in the US. Imagine the Chinese gov't or military seeing what the FBI drone is seeing and getting the geo location telemetry in real time. Suppose you put it into airplane mode (assume you actually mean local data mode) and for some coincidence, it doesn't work as advertised in certain circumstances. Would not be that hard to do. Probably don't have anything that obvious in the drone software today, but it could have already been created, just waiting to be downloaded with the next firmware update whenever desired. Again, let's not be naive about audits having been performed. Those are a snapshot in time, says nothing about the state of affairs after the next update.

Although if these local, state and federal agencies cant use or purchase DJI it doesn't stop those entities from hiring 3rd party private pilots from using DJI equipment. I think it is buried in the bill but haven’t read it for myself. I did a paid gig recently for a government agency and had to fill out a questionnaire. @@AlanzFPV if these agencies already have these drones, and have already been using them for a particular period of time, I wonder if it precludes them from using them in the future? I’ll be honest I haven’t read the bill because let’s face it those things are written in a different language and are too long. I guess my question is with this bill any agency that takes federal money can’t purchase and use Chinese drones from this point forward or is it retroactive to cover anything that’s already been purchased and currently in use? I would really be interested to know that part.

DJI's systems are highly respected and reliable systems that have a lot of capabilities. I can tell you right now that this is interesting to think about because what you do with a done is look around at the scenery. Well, we do have laws that say, do not look into people's windows. I found that funny seeing that law, but the reality is, if the law is not there we can not stop someone from doing that. I read the Google guidelines and this one I find useful. I might be interpreting this wrong, do not upload videos that contain areas that are considered a spot where privacy is expected. So I am confused about privacy fences in people's backyards. Hard to avoid, so i just try to keep camera pointed up and film sunsets, mountains, and birds for fun and if I feel it will not bring me complaint I upload it with monetization turned off to share my fun without having that 107.

    As part of that "ban" on drones, there really should be a waiver process included to allow exceptions for emergency services (search & rescue, etc) and others. As you mentioned these are critical services which could well be impacted by a total ban. They are also services which could easily create an air gap between drone activity and internet connections so as to make data transfers offshore impossible, making the need for the ban unnecessary in the first place. Glad you're taking the time to discuss this topic and bring challenges to the forefront and sorry someone has pushed legislation without considering the impact to certain critical services. Thanks Russ.

    DJI going open source is the last things that's going to happen. In the 3d printing world, the Chinese company Bambu Lab, which is founded by former DJI employees, joined the competition last year. Their products are pretty good and fairly polished, similar to DJI drones, but they are closed source (except the things they have to open source), and they do everything to keep it that way. And there is also concerns about data security, since you have to connect to and run everything through their servers if you want to use all the functions (there is a local-only mode, but with limited functionality).

About an hour later I hear blade noise by my window, then a thump. My father in law thought it was me he said , so when he saw it he waved. Wasn't me. I go out and sure enough it's a Mav Air 2. I pull the battery and wait. Owner shows up 15 mins later. Didn't say sorry, barely said thanks. He said he lost battery power, no duh. I didn't lecture him on flying over peoples backyards , people and busy roadways because he was bigger than me and it's the holidays, so I just told him to fly safe and he was lucky. In regards to recreational drones used for personal photography and videos, do you think that state and local officials view us as a danger to public safety? For example, I have had discussions with "drone haters" who argue that my interest in aerial videos is foolish and mindless and is too big a risk to be allowed in public. Even after explaining to them that I have a Part 107 drone license and know how to safely operate my drone, they still tell me I shouldn't be allowed to fly. What matters is that numerically they are insufficient to have an effect on the laws. You can start by asking them how many people have been injured by drones. So there goes the safety issue. If Skydio, Brinc, etc would spend half as much money and effort into making a BETTER PRODUCT as they spend in lobbying for their own monopoly, more would buy them.

I suspect that means that it will bypass googles security tools that they give us, such as truly removing the software. The proper way to truly removes software that was installed without an OS supervision is to format the hard drive then reinstall the OS. I have no idea how to do that on a phone other than the factory reset. I am used to pulling out a physical hard drive in a computer, erasing it with a good conputer, then putting it back in all clean, and installing it. Or use a boot chip and format the hard drive, then install os.

    It is concerning that the DJI Geo Zone maps show all of the Minuteman Missle Silos as Military Installations... specifically noted in Montana, Wyoming, and Nebraska. It is hard to believe that the US Government would provide those locations to DJI... However, it's apparent that they did indeed.

    Great video Russ! What's your take on Autel leaving the consumer side like Skydio? I'm hesitant about adding the Autel Lite Plus in addition to my DJI drones because of no-NFZ restrictions for Autel. Autel is very good about responding to emails and indicated support will continue for years.

    The truth is American corporate greeds is destroying a free markets. Playing dirty with politics and using fears to leveled the competitions. It’s sad to say it!
    Money should be spent on innovations to gain competitiveness. Consumers loves to support innovation and affordable products, where everyone comes out ahead!

    Leave it to the government to ban or limit our enjoyment of many of things we do. Drones, Off Road Vehicles, Guns, hunting, the list goes on.

    Florida public safety drone team here... experienced this first hand as we had to shelve our Matrice 300 for a Skydio X2E after Florida passed SB44. Skydio is neck deep in lobbying any politician who will listen.... And yes, it did affect our ability to provide the type of services we did before the ban, there is no comparison between the quality of what we had, and what we have now. Sad.

    I already decided I'm not spending any more money on drones because they are always coming up with some way to ban them or restrict them. For a free country they are always banning something. It's a wonder we can leave our house without calling up somebody to ask if it's ok anymore.

    I own 5 DJI drones, & I own 2 sets of DJI FPV goggles. Ive spent over $8,000 on DJI Drones, Drone Batteries, & Goggles. I've saved & sold almost everything of value, that I own, over the last two years, for this DJI equipment. If the government grounds all DJI drones. They need to reimburse all owners, of DJI equipment. Im currently studying for my part 107. To start my own business.

    Agree with everything you said. Including about how nothing that most of us do has anything to do with critical-anything.

      Yes, you are correct, none of us do anything related to critical-anything, that is why we are not being banned, only federal agencies are being banned. Did you not watch the video?
