i cant wrap my head around how they can make car belts so cheap and bike belts so expencive
Because they put "bike" at the beginning.
It's very simple supply and demand there are billions of cars out there that need belts and there's like maybe 10,000 bicycles that need belts Maybe more like a thousand lol

I've been through this with sewing machines only to realize that most belts are based around a universal standard. I imagine the same could be true for bike belts, it'd be worth researching through a larger belt distributor to find a reasonably priced match.

I know it defeats the simplicity of the bike, but I use this as a commuter in the city and would love to have the best of both worlds with both high and low gearing.

The Gate Belt calculator requires only the chain stay length and will then allow you to select a combination of front, rear sprockets and belt length to suit your requirements ; low ratios for bike packing or high ratios for speed. Using the Gate calculator I recently changed my 8 speed IGH belt setup to give me a lower “granny” gear by getting a larger rear sprocket and a smaller front “chain” gear, and with careful gear selection, I was able to keep the same belt length - I bought a new belt so I have the old belt as a spare. Most bike manufactures seem to have too high gear ratios - so the bike goes fast but does not climb so well. If buying new I suggest the front and rear sprockets are changed before even taking the bike off the shop floor , if you prefer to climb easier and don’t care too much about going fast down hills.
I've had this bike for about a year and a half. Put almost 3000 miles on it. I like the simplicity of it. Single speed, belt drive and rim brakes. I use it for recovery rides.

Rarely one can find a frame with elevated chainstay which doesn't require right rear triangle to split. Though these are steel frames and belt drive needs strong stiff mid-to-rear construction to minimize flex and don't make you suffering uneven belt wear and belt drop. Aluminum frame usually is just much common for use with belt and thus needs split triangle, but are produced in many flavors and sizes. Veer belt seems to me even more expensive than Gates stuff.

I saved a couple of old bikes from my work. A Rudge and a Raleigh, from about 1937/1938. I've thought about converting them to belt drive because back in the olden days the seat stays weren't welded or brazed in place, they bolted or riveted them on, so no frame cutting required

There's a dutch brand that makes split belts for converting existing bikes. They use an overlapping joint and many many pins to hold them together.
Which bike model is this? I will be happy to get same in the future 😊

My son recently modified a fat bike to take a belt drive. He bought a bike frame part that one would purchase if they were building a frame to do this. He then cut the seat stay, brazed in the part to "break" the frame, and put in a Rohloff hub with a Gates Carbon belt.

I've seen belt drive in a bike shop. It looks as though it's been a commercial failure. Part of me wants it for my track bike, until I think about bucking a strong headwind for miles and miles. It's that and the fact that all the parts are always sold out along with the thought of a puncture. Slightly less efficient, but on a bike that never will be fast, it would be OK. Just more challenging! No flipping the wheel around on that!

Have had a belt on my cargo bike for five years. Zero issues and maintenance. Even through salty winter roads. Just give it a gentle water rinse when it get really sandy. But the chainline needs to be immaculate or it will eat itself in no time. And those belts are stupidly expensive.

Ryan van duzer uses a priority 600 x for adventure cycling. This bike has a pinion gearbox with gates drive. It makes his journeys much easier no derailer tuning and oiling and cleaning etc. Seems a good alternative although pricey. Road bikers will avoid this setup as too heavy and you lose some efficiency.
See CyclingAbout for proper research results on chain v belt efficiency. A belt is much lighter than a chain, but a belt requires an internal gear hub which is slightly heavier than a derailleur. However, a belt requires minimal maintenance - they are self cleaning - good for bike-packing - and require only a quick hose down if you want super clean. The internal gear hub requires annual oil change at most; more often every 2 - 3 years. Without the need for a derailleur hanger, internal gear hub are more suited to single track and trails. Derailleurs were invented to allow racers - Tour de France - the change gears and when a bike had a puncture, to allow road crews to pop out the whole wheel - using quick release skewers - and replace it with a new wheel instead of repairing the puncture on the side of the road, as we mortals have to do. Most of us don’t ride TdeF, and most of us don’t have bike crews following us with spare wheels, so having a derailleur and quick release skewers does not make sense, except if you are a bike shop selling and servicing these items - and selling chains and sprockets that attract dirt and so wear out quickly. I suggest more cyclists should buy what they need for their personal situations and resist buying what most bike shops have on the floor and what most bike shop salespeople would encourage the cyclist to buy even though it is not the most appropriate set up for that personal situation. CyclingAbout discusses all the options re internal hubs - they come in 3 5 7 8 11 and 14 speed - without gear overlap.

Of COURSE the unused belt crankset is dirty. I would expect nothing else. => When I clicked on this, I didn't know the bike came specc-ed for belt drive, and I was, like, "Is he gonna cut the chainstay?" Also, now I gotta do some homework into freewheel tools.

Nice enough video I guess. But it seems like there would be very few people out there with a belt drive bike converted to a chain looking for advice to convert it back to belt. Kind of limited usefulness. Also, pro tip: clean your parts before you put them on the bike.
