  • Taking a tour of this Soma Wolverine with a CYC stealth motor upgrade and Gates Carbon Beltdrive. Conversion systems make the best e bikes, CYC makes the best conversion systems.

Would you share the parts you used for the gates conversion? I’m looking to do the same belt work!

Nice. I'm happy to see others building high performance ebikes utilizing belt drives! I'm just about ready to start transforming a non-electric to an ebike and it's also going to have a Gates Carbon Belt setup, but with a Pinion 12 speed. I'm adding in a Grin Tech All-Axle rear hub with built-in torque sensing and regenerative braking.
I'd like to know more about this setup you're running such as what volts, watt-hours battery, range, etc.
Curious if this bike already had a belt drive before you decided to add this motor or if you added the motor at the same time you added the Gates belt setup. Was getting a straight pulley alignment difficult?
    Thanks in advance!

Well thought out, the Grin product line is great! We love to use mid drives mostly, but when a hub is called for Grin is our go to.
This bike had a belt already.
The CYC is the best mid drive to use for belts because of the pully alignment
This buid uses 52v 17.5 amp hours

      Thanks for the reply!
I was researching CYC motors several months back and learned about their improved chain alignment issues. I like several aspects of their Photon and I'm especially looking forward to seeing the release of the Photon's bigger version that is hopefully coming soon.

Looks like very sweet installation. I am looping at getting one for my Bullitt but I am still hesitant about the models, market seems flooded with Bafng and yet some indication that the CyC are nicer with torque sensors. Then comes the power question on the cyc to above 2000 on some models. What’s your word on this? Thanks for nice video showing, I’ve watched all and subscribed!

Thanks Ken, for the Bullitt I’ve done lots and lots of BBSHD installations and it’s a great pairing. I have not done a CYC on a Bullitt yet, so I don’t have real world experience on that, but I have put an X1Pro on a Yuba Super Cargo front loader and I LOVED the pairing. They are a bit different, with cable steering, and a 20” rear on the Yuba, but the long wheelbase of the cargo bike went really well with the extra power of the CYC… when unleashing the throttle I felt very safe and stable with all those watts because the length of the bike made it track very stable and smooth

I had the x1 gen 3 and that was no way stronger than the Bafang with bac855

How hard was it to install the carbon belt?

Just some work to space out and install the gates chainring... it takes some specially long chainring bolts that are hard to find

Do you install carbon belt on photon?
