@@johnlocke460 Totally plausible. A few years after the next gen consoles had already been out at the time (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube), most people just hadn't realized that rental only exclusives would become highly collectible. They were probably just sitting on shelves not getting rented anymore, and then could have easily been sitting in a discount bin and still not selling for many months, so the local manager decided to just keep discounting all the old games they were trying to sell until they got sold. The person in charge of those decisions at each rental store wouldn't have necessarily any idea that it was actually a rental only game, or might not have made the connection that the game would actually be quite rare and sought after by collectors some day.

I love to see the Blockbuster stickers on carts. When I started collecting 3 years ago I quickly started going after Blockbuster stuff, just started documenting it in video at the request of my wife and a couple people. I have like 100+ Blockbuster pieces across different platforms, dvds, and vhs. Just got my heaviest hitter in the mail today... a copy of StuntRacer 64 with some nice Blockbuster stickers on it! I can't wait to unbox it and be able to play it again for my first time since I rented it as a child.

@@donsolos @Don Solo That's great, but who knows where I'll be in 25-50 years? Who knows what kind of technology will exist in that time? We might have built-in HD projectors in our phones, casting these old games on a huge wall with a really accurate CRT shader. These old pieces of history have a better chance of standing the test of time in a DRM-free digital format than physical or digital distribution. Eventually we won't have anymore classic consoles and CRTs. They will die out. As for me making a lot of fucking money, I'm not too interested.

2003, I picked up a boxed copy (sans manual) of Transformers: Beast Wars - Transmetals at Blockbuster Video for $4.99. It was my first N64 game (I did not own the system) and picked it up solely because I was a Beast Wars fan and had the PS1 game. I actually went there with my brother to buy Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime, which were both on sale. This was before I owned either an N64 or a Gamecube and was looking to get back into "modern" gaming. I'd eventually get a used N64 with 2 controllers from Gamestop a few weeks later for a whopping $20.

The Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine game was a blockbuster exclusive. However, you could buy a copy as well, but you had to purchase it from Lucasarts directly. Thanks for the support! Sorry I should have clarified better in the video, I meant they brought back the option of the beloved “grid based” multiplayer mode. The Bomberman 64 multiplayer was much different, it was more free-roaming (and some levels had multiple elevations) instead of the classic single level grid. Although the multiplayer in second attack did have these free roaming multiplayer levels there was an option to go back to the single level grid style.
      Cheers!!

I'm really curious, I remember back in the day I bought Super Smash Brothers from Blockbuster, with box instructions and cartridge, but it still had a rental label on the cartridge itself. The Second Attack is my all time favorite game. It being so rare made me sad for so many years, as this was the single most rented game of my childhood. Started buying 64 games around '08 and even then the carts sold for over $100. I got extremely lucky one day in 2018 and found it, an original, for $62. This was an anomaly, it was regularly listing over $200 by this point. The seller must have thought his copy wasn't worth much because the sticker was a bit faded (not even a lot), but trust me, it's in perfectly acceptable condition for 90% of collectors. I cherish it, it is the most valuable game in my collection, it is my all time favorite game, and it brings back so many memories. Gotta push back on that single player snipe though! The series was always single player, it took almost a decade for them to realize the game had multi-player potential, and the first game to have it was not a console game but a gameboy game believe it or not. Second Attack does have a good multi-player, the better one of the two US 64 games, while it has the most fleshed out story mode of any bomberman game. The Astral knights here are also throwbacks to the villains in the Japanese exclusive Super Bomberman games 4 and 5. Unique to this game are the elemental bombs, man, I wish they brought these back. Thats what always struck me as a kid, was the ice bombs, wind bombs, electric bombs, etc. Was such a cool concept but was only reused in one later game before Hudson bit the bullet and Konami ruined the franchise.

LOL, I accidentally bought Goemon's Great Adventure for like 15 bucks in the early 2000's when I was buying up lots of N64 games for my collection, confusing it for the other one, the "Mystical Ninja". I guess I shouldn't have returned it! I had no idea it would ever become rare and collectible, but I DID suspect that my choice to re-build my N64 game collection at the time would likely turn out to be a good investment, given that most games could be had for 20 bucks or less at the time, and usually closer to 10. The system and controllers could be found for really cheap back then too.
My N64 console went missing somehow... but VERY luckily an old friend randomly gave me my ORIGINAL N64 console, complete with an expansion pak, RGB mod, and a Retrotink hdmi adapter! :O XD So, now I have an awesome N64 collection. I've also now got an everdrive too... I just need to fix up my old controllers with replacement analogue stick parts I ordered from Kitch-Bent, and my collection will be essentially complete!
