    As a beginner who just bought his first DSLR (Nikon D3400), this just made me wanna learn sooo much about photography!
    And yes, some day, I want a D850! :D
    Great review, great video.

      The D3400 is a great start. Invest in lenses first before even thinking of upgrading your camera. Lenses will always be more important than your camera. And remember, full frame is overrated these days. We're in an age where APS-C or hell, even Olympus' tiny M43 sensor is more than enough for professional photography

    • @Eryionification
      @Eryionification 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yashwinning Agreed, currently have a D3400 with a Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 ART and an amazon battery grip, people confuse it for a D850 all the time hahaha. The best part is I still use this setup professionally and the only huge reason Id upgrade is for a flip out live view.

    Great review! I have both the D810 and D500 , they are gathering dust now, I love them but this D850 has just blown me away . I have little interest in video. I cannot mount a video on my wall. This is a camera . Its built like a tank , it’s not a toy, it’s not a video camera. Nothing but love for you folks that are into that. Give me my D850, give me bad weather , give me low light , and I will bring Home magic. This thing has my heart, Gift from my wife for Christmas, I now believe in Santa again. Cheers ...b

      Good luck with the D850. I shoot a lot of wildlife and when using the D850 on the 600f4 and the 400 f2.8, the focus was definitely slower than the D500. The pixel pitch is similar and the final outputs looks close (maybe a little cleaner on the D500). Any opinions?

    • @Chopperbob56
      @Chopperbob56 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John J , hey John, I was at first finding that the D850 was a bit slower to focus than my D500. I’m finding that the D850 is getting better the more I shoot it. I probably would give a slight nod to the 500 but hey that’s a pretty good camera to run a close 2nd too ! And the images !!!! Oh my, just unreal. Cheers buddy.

    • @johnsg8
      @johnsg8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the insight Rob. I do a lot of sporting events and the D500 is an incredible tool. Some friends I shoot wildlife with use the biggest and newest Nikon and Canon gear, so I got to try the D850 in actual settings compared to my D500. It's not a lot slower but to me, and others that shoot fast action, it's noticeable. The D5 is even faster still but that's a very specialized sports beast.
      As an aside, I've been getting more portrait requests for which the D850 will be an improvement. IMO most people can't tell the difference between FX and DX in a 8x10 as long as the photographers knows what they are doing: lighting, pose, location, etc. I plan on using it for portraits, landscapes and stationary wildlife. Thanks again.

    Great review and photos/videos Dan--thanks for sharing. I agree the D850 is a great camera....however, I went with the A7R III. I do own the D500 (just sold) and D4...may eventually buy the D850 if I sell my D4; invested heavily in Nikon glass!

    • @timour09
      @timour09 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am very interested in your opinion as I am also heavily invested in Nikon glass. Did you buy fe mount glass for your A7R III or do you use your nikon glass with an adapter? I am hesitating a lot to switch to Sony but you know...all this Nikon glass...

    • @vhc7764
      @vhc7764 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim: I only use a manual adapter and shoot with Sony glass 99% of the time. I choose not to invest in an expensive AF adapter--virtually useless for video at least when adapting Nikon, Sigma and Canon glass to the Sony A7RIII and A6500 (I own this little beauty as well). Just my experience and humble opinion.

    The beauty of a fully mature technology

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed...the D850 is still amazing and has aged extremely well because of that maturity. But the new Z8 is pretty much fully matured. In some instances the D850 autofocus is still better but it's limited to only the center portion of the frame while the Z8 can focus anywhere with more intelligence. Also the Z8 finally utilizes the advantage to not having a mirror and has much faster frame rates without any shutter wear and without any viewfinder blackout when shooting. Obviously video on mirrorless cameras is vastly superior but even for photos, this is the year of mirrorless maturity. I think Nikon needs 1 more gen to master AF but with everything else, they nailed the formula perfectly

    Great video on the Nikon D850. I am not worried that the D850 isn't the best camera for video but that suits me just fine as I personally am not into shooting video.

    Love this camera, shot a wedding the weekend with it. Loved it, silent view in LV is sooo misunderstood, i got some shots that you just wouldn't know was in LV. I use LV even to quick shoot with Flash. Live view preview mode, you can have it in auto focus mode, in preview with focus peaking and then Manual focus as you want to see focus is spot on, or shoot in M, Set SS and AP and set auto iso in body 64-XXXX and run and shoot. There was a moment in the wedding where the whole event went quiet 100% a person had passed away before the wedding, There was noooo way i was clicking Q mode or normal, as i already setup LV before, i just switched to LV silent Mode, catching that emotional moment, nobody knew and it didnt interrupt the moment in any way. Love it.

      @MrModerate_kane 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did put a post up on an 850 Forum, however i deleted it. People are very critical and dont like to be told how it works best. Would love to see just 1 video on youtube that shows actual use and what works with it instead of the camera pointing at a wall, there are def benefits to it, banding is always a worry, but easy to sort it by going Lower SS, frequencies of lights vary, found banding on LV in only 2 light sources so far with EFC, easy to overcome.

    Hey Dan, which camera would you choose to work with for an all around camera? The d850 or the Z7? After my observations of the Z7, the improvements are only marginal. Secondly, which camera and lens did you shoot this video with? Thanks dude...

    Very well done review I agree with everything stated here. I too am very disappointed with the live view performance. Having good video AF and live-view these days is becoming a prerequisite for higher-end cameras like this. Nikon has always had excellent image quality but they need to learn that IQ isn't everything, usability also matters. Unusable live-view and video AF will not cut it in 2018.

    • @TechSavvy.
      @TechSavvy. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, the numbers would seem to disagree with you. The D500 sold, and is selling, very well and it looks like the D850 is going to be a hot potato too. It appears that video AF is not all that important in 2018. These two cameras are primarily stills cameras and they are spectacularly useable for that. Apparently there isn't enough interest in video to hurt their sales very much. Year after year Nikon brings out best-selling cameras with mediocre video focus performance and year after year the video people sing the same song. Maybe you need to learn that video isn't everything; actually, maybe video isn't very important at all.

    • @bigmillsy10
      @bigmillsy10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, when I need Video performance I use a video camera, professional video cameras have usually had no or at best poor autofocus Particularly with a swing towards bodies which use 4/3 and EOS lenses, autofocus is less and less relevant for example the Blackmagic and Red cameras. I just received my D850 and my only disappointment is I waited so long. In my professional work I will sometimes need some video to complement stills and the ability of most modern SLR's to shoot video is a benefit. On the other hand, if I was shooting a video, I would use a dedicated video camera with the DSLR kept for B roll. Bottom line horses for courses (however the full frame 4k from the 850 is superb.)

    • @martinlumber
      @martinlumber 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Image quality IS everything.

    • @Gael32
      @Gael32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own the D500 and it is amazing for stills, but that doesn't mean I don't absolutely hate it when I see a video opportunity and watch it struggle while trying to focus in live view.
      There's also the odd situation where I want to get a low to the ground shot and, while the flip screen is nice, it is almost made useless when auto-focus hunts because Nikon refuses to fix the issue on their cameras.
      It got so bad that I just picked up a Canon SL2 to use as a carry around video camera for when I do shoots and for high resolution stills I have a Nikon D800E. I will not be buying the D850 because, while I'm sure it's a great camera, I demand more for 3 Grand.

    • @aphromew4502
      @aphromew4502 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tech Savvy there are different generations of photographers. i feel that younger photographers dont just care about stills. they are making videos for weddings, events, youtube/music videos, and ads for small businesses. Older photographers seem to only be about the stills. Nikon made an excellent camera for stills, but video is garbage. They are going to yield the next generation to sony and canon if they dont watch out and fix this problem. I grew up on nikon, my father used nikon, i have an emotional attachment to nikon, and I wish I didnt because given my work the Canon Mark IV would make SO much more sense. But im going to buy this camera knowing ill probably pick up a cheaper one for video whereas the high end sony or canon would be the most logical choice

  • @johnsg8
    @johnsg8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a Nikon sports wildlife photographer I completely agree with your review. It is a very neutral review of the D850. If you shoot a lot of video, this camera is not for you, but if you shoot mostly still it's a no brainer. If you shoot big glass for wildlife, you won't switch to Sony. I do envy eye and LV AF but the normal AF and lack of lens selection is subpar; get me a 600 f4 and I'll be glad to try it out with the A7R3. The D850 does focus slower than the D500 and can never be expected to have the same buffer considering the file sizes, so it won't be my workhorse especially for birds in flight. But for what it is, a portrait and landscape camera that can do some light action, it's very well rounded.
    Besides the lenses, my biggest gripe with Sony is the lens barrel to grip distance. My hand rubs when mounting a lot of G glass, I wear L gloves, and I find it ridiculous ergonomics. I realize they want to keep it a small form factor but it's completely unprofessional for big glass. Keep the APSc sensor cameras smaller. If you are buying a FX body with any higher priced lenses (which are all large) the smaller form factor is actually a hindrance IMO.

    • @julienkibler5121
      @julienkibler5121 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John J if you set your D850 in crop mode, does it help on the buffer? Because it would be the same megapixels then the D500 correct?

I was not impressed with the build quality (the plastic shell)...in fact, I thought the battery door was flimsy unlike that of my A7R III, A6500, D7200...or D4 (a tank)!. In fact, my D7200 has a more robust build...just my humble opinion.

      Appreciate that!!! Here is all the gear I recommend for the D850 (including cards) and these link only to the re-sellers I personally purchase from: kit.com/learningcameras/nikon-d850
      I'm SUPER careful on where I buy!!! Hope that helps

    From a professional perspective this far outclasses the Sony a7riii, I say that because a Pro doesn't rely on live view, eye auto focus or body stabilisation to get the shot, the 850 has everything they need and importantly it's in a body that unlike an a7 can take operate in all conditions. I'm not anti Sony, there great cameras but I'm tired of seeing comments like those on here about how superior they are when there not. (If clarification is needed check out Reuters, Getty, PA, AFP plus all other press & sports agencies using Canon and Nikon, should point out these are photographers not gear geeks:).

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm going to take a huge issue that a Pro doesn't rely on live view, eye AF, or Stabilization. The reason most pros have not in the past was that these systems were not reliable enough for professional use!!! But that has completely changed and any pro will use whatever tech is available to help them get the shot. If I am shooting an overhead shot at a reception or getting super low to the ground, having live view is great! Have you seen the 100's of photographers after a superbowl holding their 1DX cameras over their heads just guessing at what they are shooting! Imagine being able to flip the screen down and getting the SAME AF performance as if you had your eye to the viewfinder but now you can actually frame your shot. Why wouldn't a pro use live view for that? Many pro photographers have too many lenses or contracts with brands to just switch on the fly as well plus Sony has very little above 400mm which these big agencies need but I think we will see a bit shift in the next 2 years. Again, the D850 might be the best of the bunch but I wouldn't dis those Sony features. It used to be that pros didn't use AF...again, that was simply because it was less reliable than MF but once it became faster and more reliable than an experienced and trained operator, every pro started using it.

    Thaank for this video! I'm ready to FINALLY upgrade from my venerable Nikon D750...is this camera the best way to go without going mirrorless?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't need to do much with live view, don't need autofocus in video, and don't want to go mirrorless, the D850 is the ultimate DSLR. Otherwise look at the D780 which is kind of like a hybrid DSLR and mirrorless camera.

    • @hurleygreen927
      @hurleygreen927 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@learningcameras Thanks for the response, you're reading my mind! The 780 sounds like a step up from my 750 and the 850 sounds like the ultimate way to go:
      I'm not really into video, but I do want a camera that will help my photojournalism assignments; Shall I flip a coin between the two, or would you recommend
      one over the other? :) Keep up the great work with your videos!

    Thanks for the helpful review. I mostly shoot astro using the d810, but am struggling between the d850 and A7 R III as an upgrade. While I find the d810 great, it's ability to handle high iso and using live view at night for focusing is a real challenge. Is the D850 enough of an improvement in those areas to warrant the up grade from the D810. Or is the Sony a better option for astro. Would appreciate anyone's input. Thanks

    great review! was there any reason why you didn't mention the Sony A9?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The Sony A9 was a bit awkward for me. I reviewed it and loved it but it felt hampered by the lens lineup, body style, and in a way felt ahead of its time with 20fps shooting but only with electronic shutter and a really slow 5fps in mechanical. I think the A7RIII competes with the D850 a bit more.

    Dan D850 vs sony A99ii? Ignoring auto lock on program mode for video. It's worth learning to pull focus manually anyway for anyone wanting to use red epics etc.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the D850. I'm still unsure what the future will be for the A99 series. Honestly, I don't see any reason for Sony to continue translucent mirror tech at this point so it's tough to recommend anyone invest in that camera and lens lineup when the future looks to be E mount. I would either buy the D850 or A7RIII

      Yes, 8 bit both to an external recorder and XQD card. No 10 bit option at all. I believe the external does offer 422 instead of 420 internal

    Its probably the best DSLR ever made except for live view focusing. And i wish the screen fully articulated. And i wish it was half the weight. Maybe the new Nikon FF Mirrorless will be a mirrorless D850 that has great video focusing. And a fully articulating screen.Then maybe i will cry that i just bought the A7r lll haha.

    my honest opinion , nikon fx dslrs with grips are chunky and comfy to wrap your hands around , i tried sony and a few others , but not having squirrely hands struggled not trying to un knot my fingers ,, the d850 is awesome for chunkier hands , with a higher viewfinder your not trying to shove the camera into your face so much as putting your face to the camera , as it should be ,

    Why oh why did Nikon remove the 10 bit out of the HDMI?? The D800's worked great with an Atomos. Shooting 10 bit is the only feature I can't compensate for.

      Steve Holt D800 shoot 10 bit???? Did not know that

    • @Holtenstein
      @Holtenstein 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moe Alyasini Yep. It can't record it but all the Nikons from the D7000 to the D810 had 10 bit out of the HDMI. That's what made the D800s usable for films. The D850 really could have used that to stay a step above Sony.

    • @moealyasini2784

    • @Holtenstein
      @Holtenstein 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moe Alyasini only 8 bit. You need an external recorder to get the 10 bit. I waited a long time for full frame 4k and then this happens and it's now the same as a Sony. ☹️

    Truly an amazing camera. I've tried to like Nikon over the years, but the horrible live view has always made me stick with either Canon or (now) Sony. I also get annoyed by the location of the focus-mode switch and the direction you have turn the lens to take it off.
