    You need a 1.8" IDE to CF adapter to make it work properly.
    as stated on Rockbox's own wiki: www.rockbox.org/wiki/CFModGuide#A_50_45Pin_HDD_45_62_CF_Adapters
    They will NOT work willy-nilly on the hard drive ribbon cable. you NEED an adapter.
    Also note that once you do this with an SDXC to CF adapter, you will most likely only be able to use a Mac to move files to it. this is a limitation of the iPod firmware for the PC formatted iPods.

    • @ethancedrik
      @ethancedrik 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I was predicting there was some kind of interface needed to get a CF device to basically work emulated as an IDE HDD especially in this case. linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=11861 he'd need one of these basically if drauga ever wanted to try something like this again

      The Kingspec works great on my 4th gen iPod though, I popped a 64gb SSD into my 4th gen and replaced the battery and it now loads songs slightly faster.

      I'm just gonna assume the 2nd gen iPod's motherboard can't handle a 128gb hard drive. The 4th gen recognizing a 64gb makes sense, though. Maybe try installing a 64gb SSD in the 2nd gen?

    So you were saying about the iPod 2G being tough and then you unplug the SSD after the sled turned back on?
    I've got an old AOpen MX6E+ motherboard that I pulled the Diamond Viper V550 AGP video card out of while it was still running. Apparently Windows XP doesn't understand the ACPI type of that computer and so when I turn it off I have to go through the "it is now safe to turn off your computer" screen. I was doing some benchmarks of graphics cards and I hadn't realized it was still on when I unplugged the video card and PS/2 cables until I went to go put another card in and saw it was still on. Both the system board and the video card still work flawlessly, along with everything else.
    My point being, old stuff is much more reliable than the bullshit we have now. Drop your iPhone 6S+ and it's ruined, drop your Packard Bell 386, your goddamn toes are gonna hurt like hell, but your old-ass PC is gonna be just fine.

      "Drop your iPhone 6S+ and it's ruined" Off a cliff or into water then maybe. Otherwise the worst you can expect is a shattered screen as the result of an unlucky direct face-down drop, and although that's pretty bad, the device certainly isn't ruined and screen/glass can be replaced.

    Transferring images with Apple computers isn't hard. I took a 160GB image and put it on a 1TB drive and it just created a partition that was 1TB in size with the same sized data. You can also go backwards in size, as long as the amount of data isn't over the capacity of the new formatted drive.

  • @m0vefast
    @m0vefast 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You are missing the Partition Map Scheme. Your original iPod hard drive used Apple Partition Map (APM) (14:37 in video) while the SSD came with Master Boot Record (MBR) (16:52 in video). So you have to select the SSD in disk utility, and partition using APM. After that you also need to re-format it using HFS+, and restore the disk image onto the SSD. That should give it a go.

  • @expression6180

    I guess you've completely given up on this project at this point, but if you haven't used the KingSpec for something else yet you could try to utilize an unofficial firmware called Rockbox, there is a port for 2nd generation iPods.

    plop it into a linux machine then just `dd` the ipod hdd onto the ssd.
    It won't "clone an image", but take every single bit on the hdd and write it onto the ssd one by one. If that doesn't work I don't know what will.

    • @fuchs4
      @fuchs4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      No. he fried it because he put an CF-card in a mini-IDE connector. That will never work.
      Some of the newer iPods are using harddrives with an CF connector, that is why the packaging said compatible with iPod. But not with all iPods. And definitively not with the iPod 2nd generation.

    There's a very important thing you haven't considered: the partition map. I highly doubt the 2nd gen iPods use GPT (shown as GUID Partition Table in Disk Utility), since Macs began to use it after Apple switched to Intel in 2006; I also doubt they use MBR, as it's mainly used by Windows. I think you should choose to create an Apple partition map, which is the one used by older Macs (and possibly iPods).

    This is basically a re-run of my experience with a fifth generation iPod earlier this summer. The CF-SD adapter had to be completely disassembled just to get things to fit, and even then, it didn't work and only ended up being an expensive waste of time, as is the case with most Apple products.

    I'm guessing that the reason because the CompactFlash card got "fried" is because the iPod is throwing out too much power to it since it thinks it's an actual harddrive, and I don't know much about SD cards/compactflash cards, but as you either said in this or the previous part, harddrives take up more power compared to an SD card and CompactFlash card, so I think it just took too much power and overheated and got fried because of that. Maybe if there's a way to decrease that power then the Compact-to-SD-adapter might work.
    Or maybe you could try a different brand of adapter. That could work too.

  • @kaiyoshi2243
    @kaiyoshi2243 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm thinking the iPod cant recognize 128GB because it's too large. Maybe 64 or even 32 gb would work.
    And I don't think you can plug a CF card directly into the IDE bus like that without an adapter. Power is supplied through that cable to power the hard drive. And I don't think the CF card needs or uses that power. So you were sending 5v to something that couldn't handle it, and poof! Magic smoke.
    Don't be discouraged. The best of us have let the magic smoke out on several occasions. Try again. Use a 1.8 to CF adapter. Or partition the 128 SSD into two smaller 64gb partitions. Not sure how the iPod will see a drive with two partitions. May only see the first one. But it's a start.
    Good luck! Love watching your videos!

    Great video, sorry for how disappointing it turned out.
    I'm suspecting that the iPod needs to have the Apple Partition Map scheme enabled, which can be done in Advanced Options of the Partitions tab in Disk Utility. If you partition the iPod's SSD using this, you may have much more luck - I'm highly doubtful that such an old iPod would recognize the MS-DOS MBR-style partition map included with the SSD.
    Also, you should take a break if you feel like it. You sound quite unlike yourself in the start of the video, maybe tired. Don't feel that you need to deliver every week if you're no longer enjoying it. We love you and your videos either way.

    +Druaga1 check what partition table is used by the ipod. Apple partition Map, MBR or GPT. I guess your mac fromated your ssd with GPT partition table because at 17:36 i can see the partiton your formated has the name disk2s2 for a short time. disk2s2 means it is the third disk's second parition. Disk formated by gpt always have a 200-300 mb large partition called EFI formated to vfat which is always the first partiton of the disk in your case disk2s1. It is always hidden, you would not see normaly. Your ipod picks up that partiton and fails because it is formated to vfat. Use one of your linux machines with gparted to find out more about the iPod's hdd

    I can give you a Hint. For my own experience fixing iPods, You have plug the iPod then make the "Combo-buttons". I'm petty shure that with the SSD you could make it work if you first plug the iPod. One more thing, you can use ANY version of iTunes, the iTunes will detect it and make it work, the partition don't matter, the iTunes will detect a iPod and will try to restore it.
    I spect that this will work! GOOD LUCK!!

    So glad I bought a refurbished 3rd gen iPod Touch 64GB, because you can use High Efficiency V2 m4a AAC files on that thing and so I've squeezed my entire music collection (912 albums, 35GB) on it and I still have 20GB free! I expect I'll never fill that. Use newer technology and higher compression!

    It's sad but early IPODs will only work with Apple drives. (Just like old 68k MACs, Apple drives on IPODs have secret commands for checking if it's a Apple authorized device)
    I used to have a pair of IPOD mini units. One of them was 1st gen. I never got a CF card to work with it. Only would accept microdrives which had the Apple logo in them. It's a firmware check for Apple HDDs on the IPOD logic board.
    2nd gen IPOD mini worked great with CF.

    The iPod 2nd gen uses the ARM7TDMI core which is 16-bit. That means that it simply cannot read the entire 128 GB filesystem due to technical reasons. It can only support up to exactly 32 GB. I think that the disk imaging tool is automatically expanding the image so that it covers the whole 128 GB. Something could happen if you partitioned that "SSD" to a 16 GB or 24 GB Mac OS partition, manually copied the files from the image over to that partition, and then left the rest of the space completely empty.
    Also don't forget Apple Partition Map this time.

    Not sure if that mac image utility actually copies the whole disk and hidden partitions but you could try clonezilla just to make sure.

    Druaga: But, iPod, it's really good.
    iPod: NO!
    Druaga: iPod, have some.
    iPod: NO!!!
    Druaga: But, iPod, it's low power
    iPod: *BUTTFUCK!!!!!*

    Hmm, to SSD or not to SSD a PowerBook G3 Pismo? Got a few Transcend 32GB IDE SSDs, debating putting one in my PowerBook G3 Pismo (already have one in my Windows 98SE T23 :D)

    hey! I got a similar setup working a few years ago. With 3rd or 4th gen ipod (non color display), a real CF card and a little adapter board, can't really remember why that was, There was a little difference in between the pins in a CF and 1.8" IDE I think. All I did was installing the CF into the adapter, into the ipod and then plugging it to my computer and downloading the firmware and making iTunes install it to the ipod. Worked like a charm

    The pins on the card reader start at the left side so put ipod connector to start at the empty pins holes go to the right. Clone the ipod hdd to the card reader. then try it.

    I had the same problem you have when you installed the SSD, but i was using a compact flash card. When you have the SDD with the icon file after the apple logo you should plug it into the mac like that. No need to go into disc mount mode on the ipod (hold reset and hold left and right). It worked for me just plugging it in with the icon showing on screen and itunes saw it as an ipod that needed to be restored. Im not sure if putting it into disc mode caused the problems, but I would say try without it, because I didnt do that and itunes found it just fine, and reinstalled the firmware and it works like gold ! Its using a 32gb compact flash card (not an adapter for SD card) but I imagine it should work the same.. maybe not but who knows

    Hey Druaga! Try this!!! it looks like you haven't changed the partition map of the ntfs volume on the ssd, so it probably still is partitioned in Master Boot Record. Try to partition the ssd in disk utility with Apple partition map. This is how the iPod HD showed up in Disk Utility. Then clone back the image of the iPod HD again. The iPod can't boot from an hfs+ volume on Master Boot Record or GUID for Intel Maps. If that doesn't work try playing around with Mac Os X journaled or Journaling disabled.

    I actually used the same Kingspec 128 SSD in an iBook clamshell and had countless problems with it. I switched to a cf-miniIDE adapter and it worked right away. I think the problem with the other cf card was that the internals are NOT CF! lol They are IDE, which explains the "extra" pins and overheating. Try it with just a cf-ide adapter if it will fit.
