  • Venezuela Says Guyana's Oil-Rich Essequibo is Now Their New State | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Venezuela has escalated tensions with Guyana again. Caracas has unilaterally declared that the disputed region of Essequibo is now a Venezuelan state. Essequibo is an oil-rich region that has been governed by Guyana for the last 200 years. The dispute stretches to before Venezuela and Guyana were independent nations. But it is only now, on the eve of elections, that Venezuela chooses to escalate tensions. Is President Nicolas Maduro doing this for oil, or political gain? Palki Sharma tells you.

No mapping error. The Essequibo is the Indigenous Peoples territory and every attempt of spanish settlements from the 1600s onwards were met with staunch resistance from the Karinya. Those spanish settlements were wiped out by the Karinya in many instances. Only the Dutch had a foothold in the Essequibo and that was done through trading at first with the varying Indigenous Nations and later on settlements were established. 90% of the Indigenous Peoples population of Guyana lives in the Essequibo Regions and we see ourselves as Guyanese.

It is rather unfortunate that the current aggressions by Venezuela is being characterised by such a reputable news agency as caused by a mapping error by the British when in the face of international law and the principles which govern state relations the MOST IMPORTANT factor to consider here would be that the two parties agreed to an arbitration which both Venezuela and Guyana agreed will be the FULL, PERFECT, and FINAL settlement to the dispute.
Notably, at the end of the dispute neither party was truly satisfied, since neither got what they originally wanted, BUT BOTH PARTIES ACCEPTED THE ARBITRAL AWARD AS FINAL AND BINDING. This is evidenced by the fact that there was a joint state commission which comprised of Venezuelan and Guyanese representatives who demarcated the settled borders and both Guyana and Venezuela printed maps and accepted those borders for over 60 years until Venezuela UNILATERALLY decided that they would no longer accept the agreement.
That is why we are here… for all the good and bad caused by colonialism, there are rules which we have collectively agreed to be governed by as a global community. Venezuela’s actions are a flagrant violation of those rules and must be continually condemned.

As a Guyanese, we've never heard of any mapping mistake committed by Braitain. Can you provide your source for this historic contention? Venezuela's fundamental claim is based upon the legal doctrine of discovery used by Spain. Where as the Dutch and English follows the more fundamentally sound doctrine of occupation and control. Spain nor Venezuela has ever occupied nor control Essequibo. Historically, Venezuela 's wants to covet Essequibo in order to have a direct access to the Atlantic Ocean which it lacks.

Guyana and India have historical ties, shared by the Indian diaspora overthere, one of the largest and oldest in the Americas. Lately India made a militairy deal with Guyana so the ties are clear. Venezuela is buddies with CCP led China so this could easily hit India as well if not played well. As an Indo- Carribean from Suriname (also large Hindu/ Indian diaspora) living in the Netherlands, I can't stress enough how much problems Venezuela has caused recently. Refugees fleeing to the Carribean sea in search of food because the gov't can't provide for food is enough to tell you small peaceful Carribean nations like Guyan are not the agressors!!!

Not true guyana has ties with ccp also the same as Indians because Chinese came to Guyana around the same time as Indians we are a nation of 7 peoples ..don't try to segregate china help Guyana alot even before oil discovery ..Venezuela is acting on their own accord..under Chaves we had a great relationship rice for oil it's Maduro is an issue

    • @Suriyavanna

Bro, I'm Guyanese- Surinamese living in NL, I know what I talk about. The Chinese migration in the 19th century consist out of Hakka Chinese during Imperial China. In that sense there is historic ties with China, as there is with Europe, with Indonesia, Nigeria, Ghana, Malaysia, Britain, Brazil etc etc etc. There is no historic ties with the CCP as the CCP came to power at least 80 years later.....
Oil investment is a economic and political choice. Britain and USA are largest 'investors'. Not India or China......
Beside, the role of religion especially Hinduism is not to be underestimated. Pandits travel to Bihar to learn more about Hinduism, families still travel to India to visit relatives. IF Hindostani Carribeans are Christian or Muslim, that does not mean the ties are broken.
13 percent is muslim and in my family we have muslims as well. Catholics, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhist and Atheist live together as a family. You are the one right now questioning this Indo- Carribean peace by mentioning that it's only Hinduism that it's mentioned.
Within the region there is trade of course, but it is and has been an issue with Venezuela. If one does not regard 2/3 or your country as theirs then there is not reason to not trade. This border issue was already known BEFORE Chavez took power, that doesn't mean it is not an issue. It is indeed a political choice with Maduro, but that doesn't mean the border issue was not there BEFORE Maduro took office.
Chaves/ Maduro IS allies with the CCP, is the CCP all of China? no, same as Maduro is not the same as all of Venezuela. It is a political issue and because you cannot comprehend that, does not make it my problem. Please take some reading lessons before you go ranting on the internet. @@jerrellholder8382
