I would argue that if slavery still affects black people in the Western Hemisphere today then why are only 68% of them living below the poverty line. Slavery continued in the US for another 30 years and was finally abolished in 1865. Slaveowners were then compensated for the slaves they had to set free and the "freed slaves" were still held as "apprentices" for another 7 years (in the Caribbean).

I just discovered this very well educated Guyanese leader. He has earned my utmost respect. He addressed the issue so well. In him, I see a world class leader in the coming years. A true spokesperson for the developing nations.
The way this jumped up talk show host talked to an elected president of a sovereign nation, banged on the table, sniggered at him, losing his temper and his general disrespect just shows how much of a racist he is. This ain’t no “culture war” issue, it’s an issue of social and economic justice and the fact that much of the the world that was subjected to colonial rule was left disadvantaged and underdeveloped as a result.

I would argue that if slavery still affects black people in the Western Hemisphere today then why are only 68% of them living below the poverty line. Surely if slavery is still that much of an impediment then 99% - 100% should be below the poverty line. The descendents of the very first slaves taken from Africa in the 1500's-along with all African slaves sold to slave traders continued to be born into slavery until slavery was abolished in Britain and its territories in 1834.
Slavery continued in the US for another 30 years and was finally abolished in 1865.
Slaveowners were then compensated for the slaves they had to set free and the "freed slaves" were still held as "apprentices" for another 7 years (in the Caribbean).
