I finally made curtains for our living room!!!! In this video I show you how to make a sewing and no-sew version of these super simple. linen curtains.
In the Sewing version I will teach you how to do a French Seam, which is a great technique for curtains because you see the back of the curtains through the window.
    MEASUREMENTS:
    WINDOW WIDTH
MEASURE YOUR WIDTH (x2) TO ENSURE FULLNESS WHEN THEY'RE OPEN AND CLOSED.
    WINDOW HEIGHT
MEASURE HEIGHT (+) HOW HIGH YOU PLACE YOUR CURTAIN ROD (-) THE LENGTH OF YOUR CURTAIN RINGS (+) HOW MUCH RUFFLE YOU WANT
    FOR EXAMPLE:
    WINDOW HEIGHT 80"
I WANTED THE ROD 6" HIGHER THAN THE WINDOW
    86"
THE RINGS ARE HANG ABOUT 2" LOWER SO SUBTRACT 2"
    84"
I WANTED 6" OVERLAP AT THE TOP
    90" CURTAIN PANELS.

I can't believe you were able to go 2 years with no curtains! That's literally one of the first things I do when I move into a new place. They turned out great! Enjoy all yur new-found- privacy! 😉

    Hi Orly,
I showed my ‘not so crafty’ friend your channel and she was so inspired!!!! Even someone who does not DIY or creative things can get inspired to do your DIYs. Your sheer floral embroidery tutorial was totally her thing and she is planning on trying it!!

The curtains turned out lovely. I used clips on some vintage curtains a relative gave me and I was sold. It was so quick and easy to do.

I didn’t think about the french seam for curtains, will definitely consider it now! As it is super expensive, we found a hack for our living room (rented apt) : we bought 2 linnen, very thin throws at Zara home. That way the panels are hemmed all around, we just clipped them like you did.

Orly, it’s best to measure where you want your curtain rod from the ceiling (not the window sill), because sometimes there are very small imperfections in the structure of the house (especially in California where there are earthquakes all the time)-it’s easy to see the difference in incline between the rod/curtain and the ceiling when they are not parallel with each other

Cool project! But here's a DRILLING TIP from a Newyorker... You can't just go drill and hang something on a wall, girls; especially when you are hanging something HEAVY (a large picture, a mirror, etc.). Houses have better walls than apartments - generally speaking - however, if you have walls made of sheetrock (a construction material like super-tough cardboard -if you hear your neighbors through the walls...Yep! it's sheetrock). You drill the holes but you need to use "anchors" (from the hardware store - made of plastic & come in different sizes) the exact size of your screws. That's what the pros use. IF YOU DON'T... the screws will not withstand the weight of your curtains. And..."""Everything will fall down! Your fun project will turn into a nightmare."""

You could make some clever "hold-backs" out of scraps of rhinestone trim, bits of leftover fabric, etc., to keep the curtains stay neatly at the sides of the window opening.

What about the top and bottom raw edges? With no hems do these fray?

  • @purplepixie274
    @purplepixie274 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

OK, you need to hem the fabric or it will fray when washed. Remember to get more material than your measurements to allow for this. IKEA sell ready hemmed panels.
Your brackets will always need to be a good distance outside the end of the window. You are fortunate that your windows are massive and material very thin so you aren't compromising your light. If your curtains were thick they wouldn't open fully without this.
I couldn't function with bare windows, especially having people look in from the street at night, I hate it. Not good for security of your home or family either. It's worth checking view from outside again with lights on, at night; very thin curtains can become transparent in this way.
Lastly, sometimes it's better to have thicker material even if you have double glazing. The amount of warmth gained when we shut our heavy curtains in winter is crazy. Saves on energy bills too x
