  • Despite initial vast advances into Russia, the Wehrmacht would find itself sorely tested against the inexhaustible might of the Soviet Army and eventually bled white by battles synonymous with victory at any terrible cost. Stalingrad and Kursk are but two examples where the dogged determination of Russia's men and women threw back the German invaders in The Great Patriotic War, and most WW2 miniatures games focus on this same principle: Quantity is a quality all its own! READ MORE:
    Soviet forces mobilized masses of infantry, and that'll usually mean painting a vast horde of figures which can seem daunting at first. Luckily, the basic techniques of getting Ivan to the table are quicker than you'd think, and I include a couple of additional steps you can use to bring these stalwart fighters up a little without a great deal of work. Check at the bottom of this description for the paints used!
    How I Paint Things is a series of simple instructional videos designed to help the newcomer through some of the basics and demonstrate how the very simplest techniques can still give you some great results that're easily replicated. Aimed at the beginner to painting miniatures, there might be one or two tips or tricks that help even you old hands!

    I love your laid back approach: “But, I’m too lazy.” It’s very good point to focus on the upper parts of models, and the hands and face, and not legs and feet. Great job!

      Pick your battles! The best way I had it explained to me during a chat with another great painter I'm lucky enough to have spent time with was that past a point, our painting is really to help our opponent's target selection process! Nobody's looking at boots and trousers during a game; those tiny details just aren't important when you see 'infantry squad' or 'lots of SMGs.' I thought that was a pretty interesting approach and have seen it applied to a bunch of different games with quite some success!

    Soviet ww2 uniforms were factoty dyed olive green but quickly faded to khaki when in action. Painting troops with ww2 russian uniform is good for the soviet inexperienced squad in the tabletop game Bolt action as conscripts would tend to be given factory fresh uniform. Nice vid btw☺

      Aye, I use vallejo khaki grey which gives you that more faded green/brown look.

    I got to get me some of that Valhallan blizzard. I'm working on a Khador army at the moment and haven't based any of my figures yet so a quick bit of snow base would be an easy win for all the figures I've previously painted and will complete the ones I have yet to paint.
    also some of those tufts will be helpful.
    Thanks for the great videos.

    Hey Sonic Sledgehammer Studios, Good day to you. This HIPT - Soviet Infantry turned out Fantastic! Excellent Job! I appreciate you very much. I'll tackle the Ogryns eventually. ;D Those two were assembled to fill in as bodyguards where I need them, so they'll make for a neat choice as far as larger miniatures go.

    Love this. Pretty much all Bolt Action infantry look fantastic with Strong Tone or Soft Tone over base colours. In some cases a little highlight with the base colour help the contrast.

    Paradoxically most Battlefront painting guides cite Russian Uniform for British/Commonwealth armour.

    How did you do the trousers on the second model, was it just English Uniform or did you use a layer after?

    If going for more of the 'English Uniform' base for the yellower look, would you still wash all over with the AP Dark Tone? Thanks, Wonderful video!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! It'll give the English Uniform a slightly deeper, more green-yellow look overall.

    Russian uniforms ranged anywhere from a dull creamy beige to a dark olive green to a dog doo-doo brown. You’ve certainly got some color choices.

    Hello, would you please say again what you use for the snow and grass? My gaming store doesn't have it and I'd like to look for it online. Thanks! (p.s. your figures look fantastic!)

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used a couple of grass tufts from Army Painter for this guy, but any 3-6mm grass tufts you can find will work just fine for this. There's lots of options online! The snow stuff I used is Valhallan Blizzard from Games Workshop, but just the same you can find alternatives if there's something you like the look of more.

      Thanks! I got my valhallan blizzard today, and wow, it's amazing! No wonder you like to use it so much! It's so fun to work with, and because it takes a long time to dry you can manipulate it for a while until it goes on just how you want it. I ended up getting citadel grass tufts. Thanks so much for the tips!

      I did a fairly basic basing video a while back, but another should be in order by now. Valhallan Blizzard in particular is so bloody useful and a far sight easier than mucking about with crushed glass effects!

    You don't usually paint eyes in rank & file models, right? I decided some time ago that painting eyes is not worth the effort (and my pulse is terrible), and they usually don't matter at all except for closeup photos. I think the wash is enough to suggest the eyes. And if you paint the eyes and don't get them right, they tend to look really dorky. Right?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I tend to avoid it where I can. When it comes to the basic infantry I don't see the point - no pun intended - in spending the extra time since I'm not painting for display, and at the distances these miniatures are usually viewed you simply don't need to see those little flecks of white! Depending on the scale, I sometimes don't even paint them on characters. It's a matter of taste and I can see both sides, but when I'm trying to save time and effort, I'll skip them.
