  • Getting started with a new game system can be daunting, complicated and expensive. But some games are easier than others. Today I'm looking at the Soviet infantry from Bolt Action, a historical 28mm wargame that is a lot of fun.

There's a big lack of Soviet videos for Bolt Action and you've done a cracking job on this one. Your commentary is excellent!

I have some more coming, lots of Bolt Action, with some Soviets included.

Your 800pt army from the box is missing one important ingredient, the free inexperienced rifle squad. But it's a point well made, you get a lot of game play from just one box. Bolt action is an incredible game and very cheap to get into. It also need a lot more love on TH-cam. Great video.
The soviet kit is now very dated, the newer warlord plastics are GW quality with no fidling around with guns into tiny hands, but that comes at the price of having less weapon options. The newer winter German and GI kits are so good to work with.

Quantity has a quality all of it's own :D Yea I realised I missed it when I was reading the army book putting together my painted models to a platoon.
I've seen some new sets (Japanese and British) and I honestly prefer the seperate weapons of the Soviets, it's easier to kitbash various interesting poses (like carrying a rifle and an ammo can) and you can put the spare guns on terrain/vehicles for added interest.
I have a few more Bolt Action videos in the works, once I've cleared out these battle reports that are taking so much time XD, so do stick around. Thanks for popping past!

This kit for ONLY 1939-1941 period (text on box is mistaken). Trust me, I know russian uniform..., on this time bolt action don't have a real kit for Soviet (Red) army on 1943-1945 period (with shoulder boards, and "gimnastyorka" with "stand-up" collar. Just look pics of Soviet uniform '43-45...

I do the opposite, I have a Valhallan in my Soviet force :) Good fun to play a variety of games.
(I can't remember the video title, something like GW makes proxies for Warlord :D)

The Soviet Siberian Veteran box has a Maxim on a Sokolov mount being pulled. So you can get that and basically get a free MMG team like I did. It also has a Commissar figure, other than that it is the same exact sprues that come in the summer one you did with a few extra metal arms and heads options, like one that has an extra ammo can for the Maxim. Hence the free MMG team. But the funnest unit I got is my Dog Mine team from the Soviet Anti Tank teams. It's sort of laughable as they chase a light tank or make a Tiger I stop dead in it's tracks and doesn't even want to advance to within 18" of where they are on a board.

I did see the Siberian box but it's not that common to find it second hand, which is how I bought these.
I have a whole bunch of 3d printed stuff to add to the plastic models, I've got some mgs, mortars and arty already as well as some vehicles that will be painted on the channel.
I'm also going to see if I can use up the spare arms by sculpting my own torso/legs.
Hopefully I'll buy the officialAnti Tank Dogs, cus they seem fun (if cruel :P )

I will be doing the opposite!

Yes, its the perfect system for me in that it's extremely low complexity so you can tell a fun story rather than rules lawyering.
