She would have had too much ground to make up. Adeleke's first 200 is her strength, she's relatively weak on the 2nd 200, so you're better off leveraging that by having her slow down for the handover. Mawdsley on the other hand has a strong 2nd 200 relative to her first 200. If Adeleke can reduce the fatigue that sets in in her 2nd 200, she'll then be a no brainer for the last leg
The difference between Mawdsley and Adelekes time was negligible. Ultimately it makes little odds. You can't really game a better time in these things so long as each of the 4 runs as well as they can. They all performed really well.

World record is 47.60 but that is from a flat start, not flying one. But McLaughlin still was much faster than anyone else in this race.
