Hacking the Hara

  • In many traditions, breathing is an essential consciousness hack, enabling control over the mind through the body. But how exactly is that accomplished? And how can technology facilitate this age-old tradition?
At this month's Consciousness Hacking speaker meetup, Professor and Zen Priest, Ken Kushner, will share with us his story of learning to 'hack the hara.' Hara is the Japanese word for the lower abdomen, and is viewed as the seat of ki (chi, vital energy). In Kushner's tradition of Zen, practitioners learn to control the mind through the body; and, the key to this is the hara. He believes that the changes in consciousness associated with Zen-particularly samadhi-are enabled by hara breathing and that the hara is the intersection of the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of the human experience.
Kushner has studied Zen for 40 years, at first struggling with the concept of the hara and how to breathe with and connect to his hara. It took Kushner years to master, and now, he wants to make hara breathing -- and, thus, the Zen experience -- easier to learn and accessible to more people; to hack hara development, if you will.
Kushner created an analogue biofeedback device, the HaraMeter®, that makes it easier for beginners to learn hara breathing and to deepen it once they have acquired it. Kushner is now creating a digital version of the HaraMeter®, which has numerous advantages over the analogue model.

Pretty Rad stuff! I have heard of Martial arts masters talk about how 6 packed abdomen weakens your real strength, because of the increased tightness around the belly region. With this video on Hara, and Prof Ken's live demonstration of the Hara through the Hara meter, I now finally understand what the martial arts master meant. Thank you Mikey for organising the lecture.

The Hara folks should talk to the HRV people and they would see, that they’re taming the horse from behind. Anyone interested in deepening their insight in this domain might have a look at the work from dr. Gervitz who explains well the connections between deep abdominal breathing at a slow pace and the variations in beat-to-beat heartrate and what implications that has on the autonomous nervous system -> meditation hacked

Where are all these mature leaders connected to their hara? We need them now. Way too many people without character and maturity (Kings without clothes) are leading human race towards disaster. Where are all these wise people? This is the time to speak the truth in the face of deception and cognitive dissonance and lies.

    QUEStion:
Does the belly stay out naturally when Hara breathing, or do you just stick it out there and maintain it while breathing?

Awareness alone suffices. I don't get the need for a meter or holding one's abdomen open. The engine of the hara is always there, just be curious, quiet down, tune your awareness to detect energy and you'll find it's brilliance.

Satori is not enlightenment; only the state of illumination, which can be part of enlightenment, or not. There are so many different layers of satori, the ultimate satori being complete self realization and god realization... So many different realizations in between;) and even that can be through glimpses, not the ultimate enlightenment.... a person who experienced ultimate satori is not necessarily an enlightened one. He or she might just "travel" to the state and came back, and became "normal" again.

you're not suppose to breath into your abdomen, that's damaging! and that's because :
1- there is no lungs in our abdomens
2- our lungs arent supposed to extend to our bellies
3- abdominal breathing will cause aging in your entire body because it will extend the lungs down and drag everything down with it! the heart - the diaphram - the blood vessels and nerves and that in turn will cause aging in the neck and face because everything is pulled down now !
abdominal breathing teaches you to contract your belly on a exhale and release on an inhale and that's a VERY VERY bad programming of your breathing and your abdominal cavity because when you breath down to the belly first you're depriving the top of your lungs of good air and good breathing second your teaching your belly how to accommodate the vast pressure that's coming from the inhale.
if anything your supposed to do the opposite, you need to breath to the top of your lungs and if like then you can contract your abdominal muscles and then release them on an exhale .. that the ANTI- AGING way to breath
