He read the first few lines of the wikipedia page on "telling names" and never bothered to read up on how to use FUCKING SUBTLETY. Then again, it is an anime-style mecha-spy-thriller so, subtlety was never an option and thats okay.
They also need to hire new writers. Because the stories have been very mediocre in their games. But they have all the elements to make a BRIILANT game. It's the shit story writing that's let me down personally.

And if you want a horror game that has a better story check out amnesia or one of the Outlast games or maybe even resident evil although resident evils storyline is a bit more fictional
Been waiting for this review. The fact that is on gamepass make it definitely worthwhile. Beat it, delete it to get that precious ssd space back. It's not a huge file size at 23GB or so but that internal ssd is filling up fast.
Just finished this on one setting and loved it. It's not perfect but the story and atmosphere was incredible. If you like walking Sims or even half liked Bloobers old games I think you will enjoy this. It feels like an evolution on their entire formula.

Its clearly based on the artistic aesthetic of Zadislaw Beksinski he's a polish artist/architect that was the original creator of that particular nightmare world style but he hardly ever gets the credit he deserves. If you like that particular dark style you should check out his paintings their absolutely phenomenal. I go on about him like a stuck record cause he's my favorite artist,lol.
5:12 This sounds like that RE2 bossfight in where you have to beat Birkin by pushing that containter into him at the right moment, but to the players advantage.

If I were you, I'd look at Medium very closely before deciding to buy it. Some of the game's (many) problems is level-design, color-palate and textures. And those kinda require you to look at the game^^

The completely missing/broken NPC and Cop AI for example, which in of itself should have warranted not recommending the game. Do you really think, he didn't notice that at all whilst playing? ^^ His baseline was basically: "It's flawed, but they created something special" It sure is special, just not in a positive way.
I would watch the hell out of a Soul Reaver TV show directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charles Dance as Kain and Robert Pattinson as Raziel (because, you know, vampires).

You said a lot about the annoying inner monolgue, the clunky controls and lack of player interaction. But you like it because of the strong art direction in the spiritual realm.

I think the most important point is stressing that this is NOT a survival horror game, even though it looks like one. It's a gameplay distinction getting lost on other reviewers who are too hung up on things like lack of combat or how "easy" it is. Good review. (Agreed about Jesse in Control, btw)

Video games have long since stopped selling me on their graphics. As you said, if that's what seems to be their biggest selling point, I'm definitely out. I didn't expect anything different after Blair Witch. I wish the trend of passive horror games would go away.
What a brilliant game. I find it underrated a bit. 76 metascore... To be honest i was disappointed at first because i didn't know what this game trying to do. I was expecting a different game. But when i get into it i really liked it. Especially the sound design/effects, voice acting, atmosphere and visuals. This game works. Gameplay is simple but it's not annoying. It's very fluid. I really like this game. Very well done game version of cheap hollywood mystery/thrillers.

6:40 I 100% agree with you on Control. I never like the monologues. Dead Space 1 works wonders by having a silent protagonist. 2 works by Isacc having conversations via future communication tech. Control would have been more interesting by having Jesse using a walkie-talkie to communicate with npcs.
You could have just said it's Slav cerebral horror... SOLD! Still love Stalker, Darkwood, Metro, Cryostasis, Pathologic 1 & 2.. plus many many more. There's something about their use of atmosphere and folklore that lingers and infests my mind.
The way you describe the game in the beginning of the video is how I would also describe Layers of Fear, one of their previous games. Very atmospheric and paranormal, it was quite an experience.
if you are planning to make content for spotify, I suggest you to make contents such a way that it doesn't completely rely on visuals from the videos. Its just jarring and takes me out of the moment when I am listening to the 'podcasts' at spotify. I would also like you to collaborate with Sam for some actual podcasts and indepth discussions.
IGN did a 8 min review on this, and it probably was 8min because it needed to hit TH-cam's "magic number". SkillUp ended up with a video twice as long, with in-depth descriptions about everything great it has, and a (imo) fair understanding about what the game inspirations, hopes it was trying to achieve, and final goals depending on what type of players you/we are. This is the thing: IGN journalist get a "review code" and "delivery date". They talk to their editor, talk to their collegues, play the game , talk to their editor again, and then deliver a review (not necessarily in that order, and yes I added Editor twice... tbh sometimes I think they don't even play the game. They just read what other people have written and go with that). Meanwhile, my boi Shill: gets a "review code", thinks "should I play this?"... if he does (cuz he's not obligated too), he sits on his game chair/couch, and just plays the F game. He might take some notes a long the way. He might Google some stuff about it. The game might remind him of some art exhibition, or some painter, or some boat (wth not!?), and he tells us about it... as he would tell his friends about it. That is why I LOVE HIS REVIEWS! A Triple A might be a complete garbage, while an Indie might widen our horizons... I might not always agree, I might not always like, he might even be too soft sometimes (cuz he's polite like that) and we migh even rant a bit sometimes (cof cof TLOU2) but he's honest and transparent on his opinions and where they are funded on. And that's EXATLY what we do talking to our friends about videogames! And that's what is GREAT about him, about his channel, and about his videos (plus I love the Memes... we all do c'mon). Never stop SkillUp, I want you to become like that old lady from "Food4Dogs"! 😉
What I'm getting from this review is that The Medium's story is a worse take on the themes SH2 tries to tackle and its gameplay borders on non-existent.
I'm 5 hours in and I gotta admit I'm really hooked on the story so far. I'm a big fan of environmental storytelling games and this one is just my cup of tea. I read a few negative reviews that almost convinced me not to even trying the game, good thing I ignored them. Anyways anything can happen in the remaining of the game. So far is a very pleasant experience

not gonna lie this game scares me wayyyy more than RE2 or any other RE game. Just the fact i have no weapons or offensive abilities in a creepy environment freaks me out.
Although I'm sure 30fps is absolutely fine and well suited for this game it does kind of bug me that its not running at 60fps. Idk I just feel like 60fps at 1080p should be an industry standard/minimum expectation for games on next gen.
There is a way to do inner monologue correctly, and that's by divorcing it from the present situation in part. Wolfenstein TNO and TNC pair these character observations with references to memories or by waxing poetic about them, and the result is not being superfluously told what's in front of the player, but what the player character thinks of it or is thinking of in general. It's used to great effect as an invisible tutorial/guide too, as a player wandering for a while might hear BJ making a mental note of where he needs to go so players don't solely rely on objective markers and interface with the world more.
I love just listening to these reviews. They are truly interesting no matter the game.When I am trying to prove to non gamers that video games are art, I recommend your videos. The way you speak about them and the allusions you make prove it easily.

There is one true real jumps scare which catches you off guard. Scared the hell out of me lol and every person that has streamed/walkthroughed the game has reacted incredibly to that moment lol especially H20 delirious. Hilarious stuff
6:40 I 100% agree with you on Control. I never like the monologues. Dead Space 1 works wonders by having a silent protagonist. 2 works by Isacc having conversations via future communication tech. Control would have been more interesting by having Jesse using a walkie-talkie to communicate with npcs.

The way you describe the game in the beginning of the video is how I would also describe Layers of Fear, one of their previous games. Very atmospheric and paranormal, it was quite an experience.
if you are planning to make content for spotify, I suggest you to make contents such a way that it doesn't completely rely on visuals from the videos. Its just jarring and takes me out of the moment when I am listening to the 'podcasts' at spotify.

IGN did a 8 min review on this, and it probably was 8min because it needed to hit TH-cam's "magic number".
SkillUp ended up with a video twice as long, with in-depth descriptions about everything great it has, and a (imo) fair understanding about what the game inspirations, hopes it was trying to achieve, and final goals depending on what type of players you/we are.
This is the thing: IGN journalist get a "review code" and "delivery date". They talk to their editor, talk to their collegues, play the game , talk to their editor again, and then deliver a review (not necessarily in that order, and yes I added Editor twice... tbh sometimes I think they don't even play the game. They just read what other people have written and go with that).
Meanwhile, my boi Shill: gets a "review code", thinks "should I play this?"... if he does (cuz he's not obligated too), he sits on his game chair/couch, and just plays the F game. He might take some notes a long the way. He might Google some stuff about it. The game might remind him of some art exhibition, or some painter, or some boat (wth not!?), and he tells us about it... as he would tell his friends about it. That is why I LOVE HIS REVIEWS!
A Triple A might be a complete garbage, while an Indie might widen our horizons... I might not always agree, I might not always like, he might even be too soft sometimes (cuz he's polite like that) and we migh even rant a bit sometimes (cof cof TLOU2) but he's honest and transparent on his opinions and where they are funded on. And that's EXATLY what we do talking to our friends about videogames! And that's what is GREAT about him, about his channel, and about his videos (plus I love the Memes... we all do c'mon).

What I'm getting from this review is that The Medium's story is a worse take on the themes SH2 tries to tackle and its gameplay borders on non-existent.
I'm 5 hours in and I gotta admit I'm really hooked on the story so far. I'm a big fan of environmental storytelling games and this one is just my cup of tea. I read a few negative reviews that almost convinced me not to even trying the game, good thing I ignored them.
Anyways anything can happen in the remaining of the game. So far is a very pleasant experience

not gonna lie this game scares me wayyyy more than RE2 or any other RE game. Just the fact i have no weapons or offensive abilities in a creepy environment freaks me out.
Although I'm sure 30fps is absolutely fine and well suited for this game it does kind of bug me that its not running at 60fps. Idk I just feel like 60fps at 1080p should be an industry standard/minimum expectation for games on next gen.
There is a way to do inner monologue correctly, and that's by divorcing it from the present situation in part. Wolfenstein TNO and TNC pair these character observations with references to memories or by waxing poetic about them, and the result is not being superfluously told what's in front of the player, but what the player character thinks of it or is thinking of in general. It's used to great effect as an invisible tutorial/guide too, as a player wandering for a while might hear BJ making a mental note of where he needs to go so players don't solely rely on objective markers and interface with the world more.
I dont understand the Resident Evil comparing when the whole game sounds like a Silent Hill like game.Even Akira Yamaoka wrote some music to it.
I think it's just more recent and relevant for people to compare to, Silent Hill has unfortunately been dormant for a good while :(

To me the game felt quite a bit like playing Silent Hill without the combat, and with Pyramid head as the only enemy.
I love just listening to these reviews. They are truly interesting no matter the game.When I am trying to prove to non gamers that video games are art, I recommend your videos. The way you speak about them and the allusions you make prove it easily.

This split world puzzle solving was well introduced in dishonored 2 , such an underrated and underappreciated game!
