INSTA360 X3: The review for FILMMAKERS

  • There are so many videos on the Insta360 X3, but they don't explore the ways you can it for filmmaking and as a powerful filmmaking tool in very unusual and traditional ways. There are numerous little shorts within this video showing the creative potential of this camera.
    This is a review, but it isn't...whilst in content, it is a review because this is sponsored by Insta360. I cannot ethically call it a proper review because of that. Although Insta360 has not asked me to say anything or made any changes to this video even though I also cover the things I don't like. Make sure you watch other reviews before purchasing,

    Your videos are just so damned good. The flow and pacing make them unique. I watch a lot of techie TH-cam channels and yours are absolutely singular.
    I literally had not a whiff of intention to buy a 360 camera before watching this and now I’m checking my bank account to see if it can handle the bruising. Damn you, Mr. Bloom.
    Keep it up.

    This might be one of the best product reviews I’ve ever seen for any product. So much creativity, professionalism and humour all rolled in to one mini documentary. You’ve sold me! I WILL make sure that I have one of these in my bag for my 2023 travels! Cheers!

    Great deep dive review as usual.. No other channel I know of puts as much effort into these, they are always great fun to watch on top the huge amount of technical information you manage to dig testing the product and packing that into these videos, even if I currently would not be in market for the specific item under review..

    The absolute best and most in depth explanation and comparison of modes for the Insta360 X3 I have seen so far. The shots and ideas presented, on how to use the camera, are fantastic, super creative, and very inspiring. Thank you so much for the video, this is going to help a lot when trying to operate the X3 myself! 🎥🎬👍🥰

    Thank you for this amazing dive into the technical, creative and usable use of the new X3. Your videos Phil, are like movies. And the great movies at that! Technically they are obviously excellent, but I think it is your personality, sense of humour and just talent, that takes it to the level that surely is not appreciated enough. I have watched many of your videos already, and right from the first one, I was truly amazed by the top quality. Only just now I realized that I didn't subscribe to your channel yet. One of the very best on youtube. Sometimes we tend to miss the most obvious things I guess.

    Easily the most useful video on the X3. I saw this last year when I was still undecided if I really needed a 360 camera and it almost pushed be to just buy one. Now than I have number of events coming up where I can now justify the purchase I have an X3. I’ve watched your video again several times to fully understand the implications of using the different capture modes so I can achieve the end result I’m after when editing.

    Philip, that last bit was priceless! Hahaha! This is the best review I've seen on this camera yet. I wonder why no one talks about the Starlapse function on this camera... is it that bad that it doesn't deserve a mention? If so, shouldn't it be mentioned? I'm seriously on the fence about this camera after watching Ben Claremont's review(s) on it vs other 360 cams, and after yours I am so tempted to buy it. You touch on almost every aspect of the camera, but your in-depth analysis is so much more valuable for showing so many useful options for its use! Excellent video as always. Thank you so much for the work that went into this!

    Been wanting a 360 cam for a while this might be where I jump in! Definitely agree on that low sharpness setting. That's a great tip, the other sharpening modes look really bad. It seems like lots of insta360 promo footage for the camera was using high sharpness which was kinda making me think the image quality was worse than it actually is.

  • @Ozpeter
    @Ozpeter ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I enjoyed this so much that I'm sitting here in Melbourne writing this comment at 2.30am. I've had the X3 for a couple of weeks and I'm glad I got it, to replace the original One X - which could produce reasonable results in very good light but was a pig to use. The X3 is a joy to use, by comparison.
    My view is that consumer 360 cameras won't rival the picture quality of conventional cameras for the forseeable future, if ever, but conventional cameras can't produce the shots that a 360 camera can - so, if those are the shots you need or want, use the 360 camera for them, and use the conventional camera for the rest. Right tool for the right job rule.
    I'm glad you went into some detail about the audio - I recently uploaded some footage from a local park where you here the Aussie birds screeching away in the foreground, clear and bright, and far off there's a lawnmower doing its thing, and it's all captured very clearly and authentically. Except... there's a bug which nobody seems to have noticed except me (and Insta360 who say they are fixing it) whereby the 'natural' orientation of the stereo image is actually reversed. When you shoot with the screen facing you, looking at the view in front of you, the mic to the left of the screen is used for the right channel, and the mic to the right of the screen is used for the left channel. Of course it would be nice if the stereo image was kept in alignment with the video image when reframing, but maybe that's a bridge too far - but it should at least start off the right way round.
    Thanks for the guidance on manual settings - that was going to be my next test (getting rid of artifacts with flowstate in low light).
    Good to see a glimpse of Richmond Park... I used to engineer classical music CDs at All Saint's Petersham near there, now converted from a church to a house. Acoustic vandalism! But that's nothing at all to do with the X3, so I'll say nothing. Ooops, I already did.

    • @philipbloom
      @philipbloom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Peter, much appreciated! Strangely they call the lens with the screen on it the front one and the other one the rear. I found this out my lens guards arrived today. Weird.
      Avoid using any of their audio manipulation as I am sure you’ve found how bad it is, especially they direction focus!

My goal has been to use it for students to do day in the life videos, but I can't seem to find the best settings, or editing tool, to edit them. Philip, are you only using insta360 studio to edit? The eating shot with the dramatic music made me literally cackle, thanks for the informative and fun video. I'm starting to get into slightly artsy photosphere photography, mostly in nature and I was thinking that maybe the 1" or X3 might work but it seems that even though they're better than previous editions they're still not remotely comparable to a 90MP pano taken with a DSLR + cheap and cheerful Samyang lens 😕

This video actually convinced me I can shoot my next short with the Insta360 and I was wondering, for the typewriter scene, did you do that in 360 or in single lens mode? Got some stanley parable vibes from the desk shots.

    Is this the best choice for chin shots? When will you do the nose shot with the 1-inch camera? Great review!

    What don't you like about the LOG colour profile on this camera? Isn't the point you can colour correct/grade it in post? Which colour profile would you recommend for grading and applying LUTs? Standard, Vivid etc? Great review though, really in depth, nice to see a review of these cameras from someone who's been in the film/tv industry for years.

    Brilliant review as always PB 🙌 Can I ask, what wasn’t to like with the log colour in the X3?

      It looks TERRIBLE! Underexposed footage looks the worst.
