My brother just bought a Z4 3.0 recently. Went out in it last night, feels quick. Something around 230bhp, but under 6 seconds to 60. He paid just over £5000 for it, it came with black rims, looks good, sounds good, quick in the corners and good acceleration. For just over 5K I don't think there is anything as modern as that with that performance at that price and with that reliability.
And the M54B30 has always been underrated because it suffers comparatively little drivetrain power loss. EVO magazine got a 0-60 time of 5.9 from a saloon 5 door back in 2000, and the Yanks got a ZHP 330 to do the 1/4 mile in 14 sec dead. That's 335 performance despite it having 70hp less!
I think the BMW Z4 looks... MAGNIFICENT. About the only model that came out well fron the Bangle team, it's inspired in architect Gehry and his interpretation of deconstructivism... But it just looks amazing....
I tried both cars before choosing the Z4. They are both great to drive, my heart said the Boxster is better balanced... and it has that magical Porsche badge :) In the end though, my head won and I based my choice on cost of ownership and ease of maintenance. The Z has remarkably simple mechanicals with easy access to all the oily bits. A bit of d.i.y. ability and you can avoid many a garage bill. Save the money for the speeding tickets :D
Love it - even in 2021, this is still brilliant. Two great cars of the day with two ace drivers. Tiff and Jason have been superb over the years, and put Clarkson & Co in the shade. No contest .
Had a Boxster 2.7 and not long swopped to a 2.5 straight 6 Z4. Boxster handled like on rails but had to drive further than my driving capabilities to get most from it. Z4 on the other hand I can push to its limits and have amazing fun whilst still feeling in control. Plus don't have the big Porsche service and parts cost.
@ampark09 The Boxsters have the same size engines as the Caymans, and there have been examples of each that have received bigger, more powerful 911 engine swaps while retaining excellent chassis dynamics.
Handling depends on the power to weight ratio, suspension and tires, along with a driver who knows what the H....he's doing. In the 90's I won a state SCCA championship in a Porsche 911 beating Ferrari's, Corvettes, Z's and Mustangs to take the title. A Porsche is an awesome racing car if set up correctly. Most street cars cannot handle a track for a multiple of reasons.
The balance in the Porsche boxster S is brilliant, because the engine is in the center of the car. So technicly it would make a better track car if it were optimized for it.
For those of you who are saying, "the Boxster out-handles any 911 and could be a much better car if Porsche gave it a more powerful engine," you are wrong. The Cayman should replace the 911 (hardtops are inherently more hardcore than convertibles). The Boxster was never about straight line speed. If anything, the smaller, lighter engine in the base Boxster makes it less heavy and more nimble.
A cracking little car Rob. I've owned a 2003 for over 2yrs now and absolutely love it, so does my wife. The values have bottomed out now so the only way for these cars to go now is up!
@ampark09 Ruf 3400s is a Boxter with a 911 engine in it and it beats 911 on the track alot. Also look up Boxter gt3 and it has a GT3 engine in it. And now the new base 911 has a boxter/ cayman engine in it from the factory.
tiff is a good driver.....so i've heard, BUT clearly he's doing it wrong shifting down to first at 0:52 and 2:00 of this clip, you can see how it effects his lap time, he falls off his pace. I dont think its a good idea to engage 1st at that speed.
As old as I am I probably could call you grandson. By the way, just kidding about the garbage thing...... it got lots of attention. They are both excellent cars and I am a former Porsche driver and SCCA state class champion, so I know well what Porsche is all about under the hood and on the road. LOL.
@shiyonage Its true! The 911 is such a fantastic top car for Porsche that they wouldn't want to outclass it because it would ruin many years of development and marketing! Although I prefer the 911 the boxster really is a fabulous car, it could be a hell of a lot faster but like the cayman the 911 is what stops it!
i will admit that the Z4 is superior but the thing that always lets me down with it is the look. The boxster is no Alfa Romeo, but atleast it doesn't look like the product of an experiment.
You should try a 2001 Porsche Boxster S with an LS7 in it. almost same weight than the boxer engine and uses the Boxster tranny. It will decimate cars that are multiples in digit prices.
@dantae666 Well of course the Z3M has higher BHP than the Z4 standard, that's what the M represents. On the other hand the Z4M has more power than the Z3M. Duh. :) I have have a 3.0 Z4 almost identical to the one in this vid- 231 BHP which by today's standards isn't all that and if I'm honest I'd like more but it's certainly not 'awful', still quicker than about 95% of other cars on the road. The Porsche is the better car but much more expensive to buy and run.
two and a half men? I don't know where you're from but here in America its such a girl's car. S or not. Its still a cool car but I usually see women driving them on occasion a guy. The only purpose of the car is it funds 911 projects and technology just like the Cayenne.
@thugztaa yeah ok boxster s= way better than some stupid z4 m, I love other m bmws, the 2011 BMW m3 is amazing, pdk... But I think we all can agree that both are far superior to the hondas! German engineering 4 tha win!!!!

I think the Zed's the best daily so +1
Problem with bmw and porsche is reliability.people are anaware of this
The E85 is a future classic. 👍

BMW Z4 is way more elegant...

As I grow older I find myself liking 5th gear more than top gear.
Had a Boxster 2.7 and not long swopped to a 2.5 straight 6 Z4. Boxster handled like on rails but had to drive further than my driving capabilities to get most from it. Picking up my 3.0 Z4 this Saturday, good times!
this video starts exactly with what we look for.
This was the best part of Fifth Gear Tiff vs Jason
mid engine gives the slightest handling advantage, but you will pay dearly in service costs, and the flat 6 is fragile and overly complex
lol that was the best dogfight ive ever seen, they would give keiichi tsuchiya a good run

Plus of course the engine’s very low, which is one reason it rolls less.

Just bought a 2006 Z4 3.0 And I will not depart from this car

No draw the BMW Z4 was the winner!!!
Porche has been humiliated by BMW. No possible comparison.
These two are so much more fun to watch drive that Clarkson and Co. They're more genuine, less pretentious.

Shame Tiff never reviewed the Z4M like Jason did.
@shiyonage You mean you loved it so much you bought a boxster?
Was this the boxster 2.7 or the S?
Exactly what I was thinking!
It's the 2.7 litre so that's why the z4 3.0 is noticeably faster on the straights but the Boxster, being the lighter car, is faster on most corners.
I owned both but Z my fav
And, just what kind of Porsche do you drive, sjbdeebo2?
As old as I am I probably could call you grandson. By the way, just kidding about the garbage thing...... it got lots of attention. @greebuh Huh? its proven time and time again on so many tracks.

Alright Boxster!
@ShxtBlowsUp
Lmao...4 seater vs 2 seater...of course... but when the 911 comes as a coupe and a convertible just like the boxster i dunno.
@Xtasy604 No it doesn't.
Les gars ont du fun...
@shiyonage Porsche needs to ditch the 911, make a replacement, make this faster, make the Cayman faster, and THEN they will actually be great.
So instead of either get the Boxster S? Its still a girl's car but I still like it, especially the new one :)
Bmw z4 the best.
Beautifull car!
What did he just say at 11:12...
@shiyonage so true so true
Own a Z4 and a Boxster 981 🙂
Les ont ont du fun...
@ubicomp
Agreed!
Greetings from Iran
I don't remember calling myself a Porsche genius so next time try and dispute the info and not the spelling. If I gave bad info call me out on that.
@Xtasy604 maybe in your video games.
Can't beat your F-150, eh?
agreed the bhp ratings on the z4 is awfull think the z3m is better
@greebuh If it was a Boxster s, it would suck the doors off the BMW. no comparison.
Joker laugh @ 0:39
Try my slant nosed Porsche Turbo blueprinted up to 600+ HP. O-60 in 2.9 sec with a recorded top speed of 212 mph on a track.
Your point is
You should try a 2001 Porsche Boxster S with an LS7 in it. almost same weight than the boxer engine and uses the Boxster tranny. It will decimate cars that are multiples in digit prices.
Bs
Okay, I’m available tomorrow so I’ll try it. When is good for you?

this isnt even a boxter s look at the tail pipe its not dual.
I beat a Z4 3.0L in my old MK1 Boxster S 3.2 on a motor way.
two and a half men? I don't know where you're from but here in America its such a girl's car. S or not. Its still a cool car but I usually see women driving them on occasion a guy. The only purpose of the car is it funds 911 projects and technology just like the Cayenne.

and the Honda S2000 out performs both the Z4 and the Boxster on the track
when?! i don't think so...
@@ziofrenko since always....like literally always. You can look for multiple track lap times.
Uhhh a porsche genius and doesnt know that it is called box(s)ter and not boxter.
