Charlie I make this same recipe, been in my family for generations. This past Christmas I added some instant coffee granules to the frosting as I was blending it and it took the cake to an entirely different level! I don't know if you have ever tried that but if not give it a whirl. It was so good, chocolate and coffee goes well together!
I add the coffee to my chocolate cakes and frostings. lol

I remember as a child that hadn’t started school, staying with my ONLY grandmom(MATERNAL), she would make yellow cake with chocolate frosting and I never seen a container of frosting! I even thought she made one with coconut pieces- but nobody in the family remembers this! She was very old when I was of age to state this and couldn’t verify if I was right.

Can you bake a cake without wheat flour? I have a allergy to wheat.
