This is the biggest respect loser for me. How can he have so little regard for his own children? Then be surprised when they don't want him in their lives once they are adults? As others said, you don't stop being a parent when your child turns 18. He can't even manage to be a father before they reach that age.

I’ll make corrections about a few things. He has 18 kids, not 14. And Janelle and Christine both have minor children at home. He’s completely abandoned not only the young adult children, but also his minor children and strictly because he views them as extensions of their mothers, who he isn’t getting along with. Oh and don’t forget he says he’s justified because they don’t “respect him” when both Savannah and Truely still worship him. Doesn’t matter though, as a parent you don’t get to clock off when your child is disrespectful.
As kids grow older you have to earn their respect as your relationship grows into an adult one, Kody just wants blind adulation, which he cannot command anymore.
In Kody's church - the Apostolic United Brethren - the husband can never end a marriage. Only women can. So, often, men simply make their wives' lives so miserable that they are driven to leave. But at the same time, women are taught to "endure to the end" to get all their blessings in heaven. It's not a system that safeguards healthy dynamics and relationships.
I don’t buy it. If “everything they say goes” he can certainly divorce. He can also not take her through the veil in the next life. He is just wanting to keep them technically so won’t initiate it cause too lazy to add enough others on to be sure he has three women sealed to him when he dies.
We are not part of this faith, but this is exactly what my husband did to me -- made me miserable in his treatment of me, didn't cooperate in counseling, wouldn't take the necessary steps to repair our marriage, blamed me for our bad marriage because I wouldn't "obey" etc. I decided I had to file after he said several times "you are not important and I don't have time for you." Kody will eventually get tired of Robyn and the same will happen to her. I'm not a trained psychologist, but I can't agree with this analysis because Kody does show enough narcissistic traits to be called a narcissist.

Robyn's oldest son is autistic I believe. He has some sort of a disability. I am not sure that he can live on his own. He might with help from a professional but Robyn will never let that happen.

Why Kody could not have quarantined before and after his daughters surgery is beyond me. He could have if he had wanted to. Sobbin Robyn said her little ones could not be away from Kody for 2 weeks…but none of the other kids seem to matter. It’s gross the way Kody treats his family.

He lied. All polygamist families are dysfunctional. All of them have, at the very least, chikd neglect. One father simply can't be a good father to that many kids, even if he's a great guy. Someone will always go without when there are that many kids.
I lived with someone diagnosed NPD for 13 years. Narcissists love their relationships with people that are willing to buy into their false narrative of themselves. It’s all about the mirror image of what he wants to see of himself. As soon as you depart from that his face falls off and he will lose his sh!t. My NPD ex would always say things like “it’s just you, I get along with other people fine” because I was the only one close enough to need to stand up for myself and my kids, that he couldn’t just discard easily. They get a thrill out of playing the part well enough for others to believe it. It also makes it much easier to abuse and gaslight the ones who don’t. In this way I think you got it wrong. He’s nice to people and he “loves” people that play along. It helps him to project the image of himself that he wants others to see. It fulfills his false self. That is the closest way he can define love. But as soon as they don’t, he has no use for them. You see this play out with his wives and even his children as they grow and mature out of this one sided vision of love and start to need or worse, demand more. In truth, he loves nothing but himself but he wants you to love his false self. Robyn does this, which makes her a valuable supply source. Same with the younger kids.
Robyn needs affirmation and to feel like the special wife. She loves that Kody chooses her. Her power is to act submissive and cooperative. But she is also the black widow catching him in her web. So obvious. She cries without tears.
If Robyn truly wanted the other marriages to be good then she would put her foot down and not allow Kody to stay at her home but 2 nights and return after 6 nights away (2 nights with the other 3 wives or he can figure it out, but it wouldn’t be at her house). Great review! I truly believe once Robin came into Kody’s life all bets were off. He really fell in love with Robyn vs. more of a need to marry his other wives for religious reasons. Robyn filled a void in Kody’s life, which I think, made it easier for him to push away his other wives when things hit difficult. He just didn’t need them anymore. And of course Robyn is the most complicit wife, bc she’s the newest wife. Most of his other relationships were falling apart by the time he and Robyn married. They had all been equally as complicit in the past however, years of dealing with the difficulties of plural marriage changed them. Robyn was new to it and had the advantage of both being the last wife, and having Kody’s full attention. What upsets me most is him pushing his older kids away in favor of all of Robyn’s kids. It was never fair from the jump. I feel like before Robin came along he was right in the thick of trying (and never succeeding) at juggling all his marital relations. It seems like they were all right in the thick of it. He was tired of everyone he came home to having some complaint, or some thing that he needed to work on or fix. So Robin coming along with all the NRE was an escape from the hard parts of his life. She was bright and shiny and new, and not already hurt and disappointed with him, so of course he was all about her. Then the more she kowtowed to him in order to secure his time and attention, the more he began to resent the other wives needs as an irritating burden. The resentment from to him Christine because she needed him to be emotionally "in it with her" is palpable. Seemed like the more she tried to bend to draw him in, he pushed her grasping hands away.
Kody doesn't want wives, he wants female slaves who do whatever he wants. He doesn't want any criticism and, if one of them stands up to him, he withholds sex and whines that they've "betrayed" him. He wants unquestionable obedience from his wives and his children. They are to bow and scrap to him. And it doesn't matter who they are. It's not just his wives, it's his children too. He's a cruel dictator who thinks women and children are beneath him. Christine has decided that only doing with Kody wants, that unquestionably following everything he says, isn't worth living a loveless, non-intimate relationship. He cut off Meri sexually years before the catfishing and I think he enjoys her grovelling for any attention and keeping her at the end of the hook. She's not strong enough to leave. Janelle, I think, is close to leaving as she doesn't seem like she wants to take his bullshit anymore. And Robyn . . . well, she spends her whole time crying crocodile tears and saying woo is me. She follows Kody's rules to the letter and is entirely too weak to say no. It's almost like she's mind controlled. All of them should leave him. And he shouldn't see his kids either.

He said the kids were sent home from school, and robyn decided to go full lockdown mode. She basically decided she wanted him home with the kids at least risk of exposure, and he took his cue from that. But the other wives were less strict so he decided to hunker down with robyn. Something to that effect. I suspect the actual printed list they produced when Christine asked about the nanny were manufactured after the fact, just to prove a point. @@lysan4878 I don’t think we know better than a doctor. The issue is that other experts have said that narcissists can behave very well with people outside of their inner circle. They can charm other people but abuse their family. So some of what he said in this video doesn’t match with other experts.
I think the reason Kody comes off as narcissistic, beyond the need for constant attention and constant near worship, is that he has managed to somehow downgrade the other wives or the children in his head. He doesn’t think of them as people, just the means of getting what he wants.
Yes. He has a "good" relationship with the wife and kids who are "behaving". When a wife or kid challenges him, they are discarded. If Robyn's attitude and behavior were to change, same with her kids, we would likely see a change in the way Kody treats them.

In his religion the legal marriage doesn’t matter. He remained spiritually married to Meri. He wanted to adopt his step kids legally in case something happened to their mom and probably insurance.

If you have children you know at 18 you do not cut them off. You might be legally responsible until they are 18 but children are a lifetime of supporting them emotionally and helping them if they need help financially ( if you are able) . Dependence aside, let’s be for real here. Robyn gives Kody respect and goes along with him more than the other wives because she GETS respect. Robyn’s son, that isn’t Kody’s, got into a school at PSU (if I remember correctly). Robyn wants to move there and Kody goes out of his way to emotionally manipulate Christine to convince her to do it. And the fact that Christine probably saw everything he said about that trip afterwards. And Kody just *shrugs* and tries to bully them into living in the same house, all the while disrespecting their legitimate reasons to not. The fact that crap has been going on for years is a testament to how much love and respect they had for *him*, something that never seemed to be reciprocated.

Thank you for your analysis of Kody! I was wondering if you would possibly do an analysis of Robyn and some of the ways she has been portrayed during this season. It is odd that she has claimed to be a very empathetic person, however, she doesn’t seem to be able to really relate to her sister wives. Some of her interactions seem more than a bit tone-deaf, like when she told Meri that SHE (Robyn) was the Brown family scapegoat, or when she decided to tell Janelle she was mourning the breakdown of the family while Janelle was mourning the passing of her mother. In part two of the tell-all, she even states that Christine put less effort into her almost 30 year marriage than Robyn put into her first marriage, which lasted less than a decade. At every turn, Robyn seems to be angry at the other wives for making her life less than perfect, while underplaying the ways that she and her own children benefit from the family breakdown. I wonder if Robyn and Kody feed off of each other to create an unhealthy dynamic for the rest of the family, or if the other three marriages were always doomed to fall apart, regardless of Robyn being part of the family.
She's an enabler for Kody. In some ways the enabler is harder to deal with because they also lack awareness and empathy. Kody is a narcissist and Robyn is his enabler.

I think having narcissistic personality disorder and being a narcissistic person aren’t the same …… he definitely is and has narcissistic tendencies. He only has interest in relationships that are about him and how amazing he is. Casts his wives and kids asides once they don’t fill that void.

as a student of psychology thank you for explaining what a true narcissist is. these days i find that everyone is being labeled as a narcissist (or any other axis II disorder) because it's popular.
I disagree with this guy. NPD is a spectrum disorder. Narcissists love bomb and act like a great person when he wants something. Then discard when they find no value in you. He needs janelle. She works. Ur basing a diagnosis on what you see on an edited show. He definitely meets the diagnostic criteria. He may not be a malignant narcissist but he’s definitely on the spectrum.
This is exactly it. There is a difference between a malignant narcissist and a narcissist. Also, narcissists are often nice and charming to people outside their inner circle.

His classmates commented - of course, Kody is a polygamist. He always needed to be the center of attention ALWAYS! He has made it clear he does not love nor respect his wives. I am glad to see these women speaking out against being maltreated and exerting their independence in the way that is right for them. Kudos to Christine for moving on, Janelle seems at peace in the friendship stage and has been super clear that she will always stand for and choose her kids over Kody - I hope Meri loves her bed and breakfast and lives a wonderful life back in Utah off-camera and finds the courage to stand for true love that she deserves - therapy can help her awareness. I have to say, it troubles me that the term, narcissist, is being used so casually in many posts. It's not just about Kody, it's a term being used in society in general to describe selfishness. I'm so glad you addressed this. I was raised by two narcissists. I honestly don't know how I survived. At 53, I'm only now aware that I survived emotional neglect and abuse, how I was blamed for everything, and was trained to be responsible for everyone's happiness. That's an incredible burden for a child to carry, and I haven't healed. My father and I don't speak, though we did make up briefly. When I realized he was playing with my emotions and hadn't changed, I had to cut ties again. But I've forgiven him. It's harder to forgive my mom, because I am her caregiver and I deal with her daily. I have come to terms with the fact that I may not be able to forgive her until she's gone. All this to say, yes, Cody is a bad husband and father, but he's not out to deliberately destroy his kids. Narcissistic parents, on the other hand, do. They can't handle their "creation" growing up and becoming a splendid adult. So thanks for the description of narcissism, and hopefully, people will stop throwing the term around.
Christine took care of 13 kids singlehandedly while the others worked. No nanny. Robing gets a nanny for two and she doesn't even have a job. Kody's priorities are totally messed up in who is the better woman.
My husband has ignored me for 35 years and stopped being physically intimate the last 20 years or so of our marriage. Being a Christian, I was afraid to leave but finally did because I became suicidal etc. He was diagnosed with personality disorder and anxiety. He never connected with me ever. Or with anyone.
And it's not your fault. It's not that we aren't worthy and appealing, it's someone else's mental illness. You deserve kindness and emotional connection. Good for for taking action.

What a great explanation of Narcisissism! My Narcissistic ex does not have the ability to feel empathy. I've seen Kody show empathy many times on the show even though I do think he's an attention seeking jerk. Lol
that comment actually reminds me of a moment i had with a close friend/ex-girlfriend of mine. i know everyone says their exes are narcissists, but the comment made that night gave me a cold feeling i've never had again. basically, we had a mutual friend visiting. we took her out to a bar we both really liked and she had a LOT to drink. i remember taking her home on the subway and bringing her upstairs to the bedroom to sleep. she chose that moment to confide in both of us that she'd been sexually abused by a relative and how much it impacted her. we both sat with her and listened until she fell asleep. afterward, i was overwhelmed with the information and when my ex and i left the room, i remember her turning to me. i expected her to say something that reflected what *i* was thinking, like, "oh my god that is horrific" or something. instead, she said "she (our friend) never once asked me about what I'D been through" it absolutely blew my mind. so yeah, i understand that moment. i couldn't believe that we both listened to that story and instead of being moved or feeling empathy, she was offended that the attention wasn't on her.
He's been told by members if his own community what he has done wrong and tried to help but he does not want to listen . He wants the perks and none of the responsibility.
The word narcissist existed long before the DSM category of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Kody is a narcissist under the common use of the word. Not meeting the criteria for NPD just means he doesn't get a free pass. He is capable of changing - he's had multiple opportunities going to therapy with different wives & he won't even acknowledge that he's part of the problem. He uses his anger to shut down conversations whenever someone even comes close to confronting him. He would be a lousy husband and father even if he only had one wife. In one of the early seasons, Meri said that she wasn't sure she wanted a polygamous marriage but she agreed to it because she couldn't get pregnant. Both Janelle and Christine had kids before Meri finally conceived. A turning point that I saw in her relationship with Kody was a few seasons back when they went on a trip together. She said she wanted to try for another baby and he shut her down immediately without even discussing it. Her catfishing "affair" started not long after that.
I never liked dogface either. He thinks he is so above everyone, like they should bow to him. The man has not financially took care of nobody. Kody only shows Robyn attention other than that he treats people with no reguard
Look, Kody is intentionally pushing each wife away so he can remain in a mono relationship with R. He emphasizes repeatedly that he "can't leave" for religious reasons. I think it is actually for ego reasons, but I digress. He is actively pushing the other wives away so the narrative is that they left him. It is so obvious.
What makes a narcissist then? Because this guy doesn't care if he tortures these women with lack of intimacy. He's neglected his children while praising Robyn's children aka the golden children. He's triangulated these women. I seriously think he's a narcissist.
Its low emotional maturity. Like a child that doesn't care if you slaved over a birthday cake, may throw a tantrum because it wasn't strawberry flavor, Kody throws a tantrum not caring about the emotional effect. If he were intentionally trying to cause this effect it would be narcissistic.
Finally a psychologist who freely and honestly states his opinion without apology! It's so damn refreshing! Thank you for common sense explanations that we can all understand and relate to. Cody is truly cheesy and seems like he'd be miserable to live with. His hair drives me absolutely nuts. Robin is like a sad doormat. Thank you for explaining what a true narcissist is. I now have a much better understanding.
If someone only has relationships because they are beneficial, or transactional, if you will, doesn't that mean they are still, in essence, narcissistic?
I appreciate you still exploring this topic of Narcissism and being professional about not wanting to diagnose it as I know many in the profession are reluctant to do so however; narcissism operates on a system of oppression and a lot of it is more insidious than most people can recognize especially due to the current culture amongst psychiatry not wanting to diagnose narcissism and also people who were the lucky ones to not having to grow up around it. I promise you, behind every cult & every dictator is a highly narcissistic individual. This polygamous family (cult) is no exception. I would say to pay attention to how the structure is set up, follow the money and you can begin to see the signs. They’re everywhere.
Kodys behavior at weddings when he is officiating in my opinion does meet the first criteria you listed for narcissist disorder. That is his work or friend environment and he absolutely makes it all about him.
I do think he’s a narcissist. Big time. He does very much seem to fit criteria. He does think he’s better than everyone else, and he very much cares about what everyone else thinks of him- the times we see him most upset is when he thinks people are disregarding him or not following him. He doesn’t seem to love Robyn as much as he loves THAT she is dependent on him. Of course these are just my opinions and I can’t diagnose him officially. But I’ve watched these shows and this is just what he shows to the camera!
Meri is throwing herself at him and basically begging for attention and he wants none of it. She’s following his “rules”. He said he loved Janelle but was not in love with her. Maybe Robyn is the only one he’s in love with and sees sleeping with the others as a betrayal 🤷🏻♀️ he slowly cut them off sexually after Robyn showed up.
I agree with all of these things, but he doesn't fit enough criterias for narcissitic personality disorder. Some of the things above, yes they are negative behaviour, but not part of narcissism (might be part of something else), I mean you can think he is, but I dont see how he is if you look at the actual clinical diagnose. Sometimes you can just be an asshole.

His personality faults were shadowed with his control over any of him family members reactions. .. he is the master and others are his servants. ... his wellbeing and his feelling only matters. He doesn’t have a healthy relationship with Robyn either, he only likes her because she feeds his narc supply. He told Janelle in one of the recent episodes that they would have a better relationship if she was more like Robyn and did everything he expected of her. I’m no psychologist but I’ve known enough narcissists in my life to spot them. Kody is a definitely a narcissist if there ever was one.

When he talks about Robyn’s kids with the group he says “our kids” but I’ve never seen him do that with the others.
This is the biggest respect loser for me. How can he have so little regard for his own children? Then be surprised when they don't want him in their lives once they are adults? As others said, you don't stop being a parent when your child turns 18. He can't even manage to be a father before they reach that age.

I’ll make corrections about a few things. He has 18 kids, not 14. And Janelle and Christine both have minor children at home. He’s completely abandoned not only the young adult children, but also his minor children and strictly because he views them as extensions of their mothers, who he isn’t getting along with. Oh and don’t forget he says he’s justified because they don’t “respect him” when both Savannah and Truely still worship him. Doesn’t matter though, as a parent you don’t get to clock off when your child is disrespectful.

In Kody's church - the Apostolic United Brethren - the husband can never end a marriage. Only women can. So, often, men simply make their wives' lives so miserable that they are driven to leave. But at the same time, women are taught to "endure to the end" to get all their blessings in heaven. It's not a system that safeguards healthy dynamics and relationships.

I don’t buy it. If “everything they say goes” he can certainly divorce. He can also not take her through the veil in the next life. He is just wanting to keep them technically so won’t initiate it cause too lazy to add enough others on to be sure he has three women sealed to him when he dies.
We are not part of this faith, but this is exactly what my husband did to me -- made me miserable in his treatment of me, didn't cooperate in counseling, wouldn't take the necessary steps to repair our marriage, blamed me for our bad marriage because I wouldn't "obey" etc. I decided I had to file after he said several times "you are not important and I don't have time for you." Kody will eventually get tired of Robyn and the same will happen to her. I'm not a trained psychologist, but I can't agree with this analysis because Kody does show enough narcissistic traits to be called a narcissist.

I lived with someone diagnosed NPD for 13 years. Narcissists love their relationships with people that are willing to buy into their false narrative of themselves. It’s all about the mirror image of what he wants to see of himself. As soon as you depart from that his face falls off and he will lose his sh!t. My NPD ex would always say things like “it’s just you, I get along with other people fine” because I was the only one close enough to need to stand up for myself and my kids, that he couldn’t just discard easily. They get a thrill out of playing the part well enough for others to believe it. It also makes it much easier to abuse and gaslight the ones who don’t. In this way I think you got it wrong. He’s nice to people and he “loves” people that play along. It helps him to project the image of himself that he wants others to see. It fulfills his false self. That is the closest way he can define love. But as soon as they don’t, he has no use for them. You see this play out with his wives and even his children as they grow and mature out of this one sided vision of love and start to need or worse, demand more. In truth, he loves nothing but himself but he wants you to love his false self. Robyn does this, which makes her a valuable supply source. Same with the younger kids.
Robyn needs affirmation and to feel like the special wife. She loves that Kody chooses her. Her power is to act submissive and cooperative. But she is also the black widow catching him in her web. So obvious. She cries without tears.

If Robyn truly wanted the other marriages to be good then she would put her foot down and not allow Kody to stay at her home but 2 nights and return after 6 nights away (2 nights with the other 3 wives or he can figure it out, but it wouldn’t be at her house). She is enabling him and reinforcing his bad behavior. If she truly cared she would not accept his monogamy behavior and would stand for her sister wives and their children.
Great review! I truly believe once Robin came into Kody’s life all bets were off. He really fell in love with Robyn vs. more of a need to marry his other wives for religious reasons. Robyn filled a void in Kody’s life, which I think, made it easier for him to push away his other wives when things hit difficult. He just didn’t need them anymore. And of course Robyn is the most complicit wife, bc she’s the newest wife. Most of his other relationships were falling apart by the time he and Robyn married. They had all been equally as complicit in the past however, years of dealing with the difficulties of plural marriage changed them. Robyn was new to it and had the advantage of both being the last wife, and having Kody’s full attention. What upsets me most is him pushing his older kids away in favor of all of Robyn’s kids. It was never fair from the jump. I feel like before Robin came along he was right in the thick of trying (and never succeeding) at juggling all his marital relations. It seems like they were all right in the thick of it. He was tired of everyone he came home to having some complaint, or some thing that he needed to work on or fix. So Robin coming along with all the NRE was an escape from the hard parts of his life. She was bright and shiny and new, and not already hurt and disappointed with him, so of course he was all about her. Then the more she kowtowed to him in order to secure his time and attention, the more he began to resent the other wives needs as an irritating burden. The resentment from to him Christine because she needed him to be emotionally "in it with her" is palpable. Seemed like the more she tried to bend to draw him in, he pushed her grasping hands away.
Kody doesn't want wives, he wants female slaves who do whatever he wants. He doesn't want any criticism and, if one of them stands up to him, he withholds sex and whines that they've "betrayed" him. He wants unquestionable obedience from his wives and his children. They are to bow and scrap to him. And it doesn't matter who they are. It's not just his wives, it's his children too. He's a cruel dictator who thinks women and children are beneath him. Christine has decided that only doing with Kody wants, that unquestionably following everything he says, isn't worth living a loveless, non-intimate relationship. He cut off Meri sexually years before the catfishing and I think he enjoys her grovelling for any attention and keeping her at the end of the hook. She's not strong enough to leave. Janelle, I think, is close to leaving as she doesn't seem like she wants to take his bullshit anymore. And Robyn . . . well, she spends her whole time crying crocodile tears and saying woo is me. She follows Kody's rules to the letter and is entirely too weak to say no. It's almost like she's mind controlled. All of them should leave him. And he shouldn't see his kids either.

He said the kids were sent home from school, and robyn decided to go full lockdown mode. She basically decided she wanted him home with the kids at least risk of exposure, and he took his cue from that. But the other wives were less strict so he decided to hunker down with robyn. Something to that effect. I suspect the actual printed list they produced when Christine asked about the nanny were manufactured after the fact, just to prove a point. I doubt very much whether the nanny has ever seen that list. Jussayin. 🤷🏾♀️
Kody is defensive, angry, emotionally stunted and has such a fragile ego. Zero self-reflection or ownership of his part in the unraveling of this entire family unit. Very immature.
Kody saw himself as head of the wives household. He was as they let him be for many years. They fed his ego for years, until their kids came before him. Which imo they should come before him. Robyn feeds his ego and this makes him feel like he still has a sense of control. The other wives started coming to their senses except Mary. I think she’s staying for her own reasons but he clearly has no feelings for her as he’s stated. She should leave. So should Janelle .

@@lysan4878 I don’t think we know better than a doctor. The issue is that other experts have said that narcissists can behave very well with people outside of their inner circle. They can charm other people but abuse their family. So some of what he said in this video doesn’t match with other experts.
I think the reason Kody comes off as narcissistic, beyond the need for constant attention and constant near worship, is that he has managed to somehow downgrade the other wives or the children in his head. He doesn’t think of them as people, just the means of getting what he wants.
Yes. He has a "good" relationship with the wife and kids who are "behaving". When a wife or kid challenges him, they are discarded. If Robyn's attitude and behavior were to change, same with her kids, we would likely see a change in the way Kody treats them.

OMG, this was soo good. Kody is a jackhole!! What I really hate is that Meri and Janelle think it's ok and are willing to settle for being a "friend", who the husband just tolerates. If you have children you know at 18 you do not cut them off. You might be legally responsible until they are 18 but children are a lifetime of supporting them emotionally and helping them if they need help financially ( if you are able) . Dependence aside, let’s be for real here. Robyn gives Kody respect and goes along with him more than the other wives because she GETS respect. Robyn’s son, that isn’t Kody’s, got into a school at PSU (if I remember correctly). Robyn wants to move there and Kody goes out of his way to emotionally manipulate Christine to convince her to do it. And the fact that Christine probably saw everything he said about that trip afterwards. And Kody just *shrugs* and tries to bully them into living in the same house, all the while disrespecting their legitimate reasons to not.
The fact that crap has been going on for years is a testament to how much love and respect they had for *him*, something that never seemed to be reciprocated.

Thank you for your analysis of Kody! I was wondering if you would possibly do an analysis of Robyn and some of the ways she has been portrayed during this season. It is odd that she has claimed to be a very empathetic person, however, she doesn’t seem to be able to really relate to her sister wives. Some of her interactions seem more than a bit tone-deaf, like when she told Meri that SHE (Robyn) was the Brown family scapegoat, or when she decided to tell Janelle she was mourning the breakdown of the family while Janelle was mourning the passing of her mother. In part two of the tell-all, she even states that Christine put less effort into her almost 30 year marriage than Robyn put into her first marriage, which lasted less than a decade. At every turn, Robyn seems to be angry at the other wives for making her life less than perfect, while underplaying the ways that she and her own children benefit from the family breakdown. I wonder if Robyn and Kody feed off of each other to create an unhealthy dynamic for the rest of the family, or if the other three marriages were always doomed to fall apart, regardless of Robyn being part of the family.

Thank you for this excellent explanation of narcissism. I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner and it seems that “Narcissist” is the flavor of the month with every person “diagnosing” someone who they don’t like as a narcissist.
I think having narcissistic personality disorder and being a narcissistic person aren’t the same …… he definitely is and has narcissistic tendencies. He only has interest in relationships that are about him and how amazing he is. Casts his wives and kids asides once they don’t fill that void.

I disagree with this guy. NPD is a spectrum disorder. Narcissists love bomb and act like a great person when he wants something. Then discard when they find no value in you. He needs janelle. His classmates commented - of course, Kody is a polygamist. He always needed to be the center of attention ALWAYS! He has made it clear he does not love nor respect his wives. He supposedly can not leave according to his religion ....yet somehow he can disrespect them, withhold affection, and even badmouth these women to their children - how deplorable. I think it is wise you presented the information clarifying that he is NOT a narcissist. You did an amazing job of explaining this. I think many folks watch and pick the term that seems the most deplorable- as in narcissist in his case. There are many terms that have been shared eloquently in the commentary to your presentation. He has made it clear that he fell in love with Robyn at first sight in one commentary and that he had never experienced that. A MAN - would have the courage to tell the other women who shared their lives with him and had children with him that same thing and ask for their forgiveness and state his hope that they find the love that he has found in Robyn for themselves - for they deserve it - not some short shrift of an a$*hat that he offers. I am glad to see these women speaking out against being maltreated and exerting their independence in the way that is right for them. Kudos to Christine for moving on, Janelle seems at peace in the friendship stage and has been super clear that she will always stand for and choose her kids over Kody - I hope Meri loves her bed and breakfast and lives a wonderful life back in Utah off-camera and finds the courage to stand for true love that she deserves - therapy can help her awareness. I have to say, it troubles me that the term, narcissist, is being used so casually in many posts. It's not just about Kody, it's a term being used in society in general to describe selfishness. I'm so glad you addressed this.
I was raised by two narcissists. I honestly don't know how I survived. At 53, I'm only now aware that I survived emotional neglect and abuse, how I was blamed for everything, and was trained to be responsible for everyone's happiness. That's an incredible burden for a child to carry, and I haven't healed.
My father and I don't speak, though we did make up briefly. When I realized he was playing with my emotions and hadn't changed, I had to cut ties again. But I've forgiven him.
It's harder to forgive my mom, because I am her caregiver and I deal with her daily. I have come to terms with the fact that I may not be able to forgive her until she's gone.
All this to say, yes, Cody is a bad husband and father, but he's not out to deliberately destroy his kids. Narcissistic parents, on the other hand, do. They can't handle their "creation" growing up and becoming a splendid adult.
So thanks for the description of narcissism, and hopefully, people will stop throwing the term around.

My husband has ignored me for 35 years and stopped being physically intimate the last 20 years or so of our marriage. Being a Christian, I was afraid to leave but finally did because I became suicidal etc. He was diagnosed with personality disorder and anxiety. He never connected with me ever. Or with anyone.

that comment actually reminds me of a moment i had with a close friend/ex-girlfriend of mine. i know everyone says their exes are narcissists, but the comment made that night gave me a cold feeling i've never had again.
basically, we had a mutual friend visiting. we took her out to a bar we both really liked and she had a LOT to drink. i remember taking her home on the subway and bringing her upstairs to the bedroom to sleep. she chose that moment to confide in both of us that she'd been sexually abused by a relative and how much it impacted her. we both sat with her and listened until she fell asleep.
afterward, i was overwhelmed with the information and when my ex and i left the room, i remember her turning to me. i expected her to say something that reflected what *i* was thinking, like, "oh my god that is horrific" or something. instead, she said "she (our friend) never once asked me about what I'D been through"
it absolutely blew my mind.
so yeah, i understand that moment. i couldn't believe that we both listened to that story and instead of being moved or feeling empathy, she was offended that the attention wasn't on her.
He's been told by members if his own community what he has done wrong and tried to help but he does not want to listen . He wants the perks and none of the responsibility.

The word narcissist existed long before the DSM category of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Kody is a narcissist under the common use of the word. Not meeting the criteria for NPD just means he doesn't get a free pass. He is capable of changing - he's had multiple opportunities going to therapy with different wives & he won't even acknowledge that he's part of the problem. He uses his anger to shut down conversations whenever someone even comes close to confronting him. He would be a lousy husband and father even if he only had one wife.
In one of the early seasons, Meri said that she wasn't sure she wanted a polygamous marriage but she agreed to it because she couldn't get pregnant. Both Janelle and Christine had kids before Meri finally conceived.
A turning point that I saw in her relationship with Kody was a few seasons back when they went on a trip together. She said she wanted to try for another baby and he shut her down immediately without even discussing it. Her catfishing "affair" started not long after that.
I never liked dogface either. He thinks he is so above everyone, like they should bow to him. The man has not financially took care of nobody. Kody only shows Robyn attention other than that he treats people with no reguard
Look, Kody is intentionally pushing each wife away so he can remain in a mono relationship with R. He emphasizes repeatedly that he "can't leave" for religious reasons. I think it is actually for ego reasons, but I digress. He is actively pushing the other wives away so the narrative is that they left him. It is so obvious.
What makes a narcissist then? Because this guy doesn't care if he tortures these women with lack of intimacy. He's neglected his children while praising Robyn's children aka the golden children. He's triangulated these women. I seriously think he's a narcissist.

Its low emotional maturity. Like a child that doesn't care if you slaved over a birthday cake, may throw a tantrum because it wasn't strawberry flavor, Kody throws a tantrum not caring about the emotional effect. If he were intentionally trying to cause this effect it would be narcissistic.

If someone only has relationships because they are beneficial, or transactional, if you will, doesn't that mean they are still, in essence, narcissistic?
I appreciate you still exploring this topic of Narcissism and being professional about not wanting to diagnose it as I know many in the profession are reluctant to do so however; narcissism operates on a system of oppression and a lot of it is more insidious than most people can recognize especially due to the current culture amongst psychiatry not wanting to diagnose narcissism and also people who were the lucky ones to not having to grow up around it.
I promise you, behind every cult & every dictator is a highly narcissistic individual. This polygamous family (cult) is no exception. I would say to pay attention to how the structure is set up, follow the money and you can begin to see the signs. They’re everywhere.
Kodys behavior at weddings when he is officiating in my opinion does meet the first criteria you listed for narcissist disorder. That is his work or friend environment and he absolutely makes it all about him.
I do think he’s a narcissist. Big time. He does very much seem to fit criteria. He does think he’s better than everyone else, and he very much cares about what everyone else thinks of him- the times we see him most upset is when he thinks people are disregarding him or not following him. I definitely think Meri (spelling?) Is in a trauma bond with him. She is so brainwashed and trapped because the catfishing incident felt like punishment and an example of what the world outside of Kody is like. She doesnt realize that she deserves better treatment anymore and its deeply saddening.
What DOES make him a narcissist is calling his son a narcissist. They always project, they tell on themselves, they point fingers and lay blame.

While I think he’s a jerk and being a horrible person, having grown up with a true narcissist Is a completely different emotional and mental abuse then what is going on here.
Robyn and Kody is textbook examples of a co- dependent covert narcissist and an overt narcissist. This «expert» is talking about narcissism and saying things quite opposite of what other experts are saying- like Ramini & Sam Vaknin

His personality faults were shadowed with his control over any of him family members reactions. .. he is the master and others are his servants. ... his wellbeing and his feelling only matters. Disconnect from other wellbeing and feelings... I am sorry I am French can't realy express with English.
He doesn’t have a healthy relationship with Robyn either, he only likes her because she feeds his narc supply. He told Janelle in one of the recent episodes that they would have a better relationship if she was more like Robyn and did everything he expected of her. I’m no psychologist but I’ve known enough narcissists in my life to spot them. Kody is a definitely a narcissist if there ever was one.
