      I believe good nutrition advice should be free for all, and packaging it up and then claiming you can eat unlimited of something disregarding the caloric surplus etc. which is already going to cause someone to put weight on is already just wrong.

      @@user-pe9qg3hg3k I guess it is free for all cos you can search the internet and find anything these days. The problem is that it's mixed in with all the rubbish + for most people nutrition is just part of the puzzle. The psychology needs to change too.

      I love it list 2 1/2 stone. Healthy bight protein diet. When done correctly! 1/3 plate free food! High calorie food is highly syned. Makes sense to steer clear of high syned food and choose a better option. I don’t know why it gets slated.

      I am a slimming world member and currently have lost 3.5 stone maintaining it for 2 years. My fella has lost 2 stone and has also maintained it. I think people in the thread/video are misunderstanding the free food/speed food. Yes things like pasta are a free food - this is to stop you having to weigh and measure which can get obsessive. I am autistic and I do find calorie counting complicated and would obsess for example. They also say that will every meal you should have 1/3 speed food which is usually leafy greens or the least energy dense food. Then the other two thirds are your free food and p food (protein). They also say have a common sense approach and teach you to eat until you are full. So yes pasta and potatoes are free foods however they need to be combined with the 1/3 speed to make balanced meals which are not bland. For example my meal last night was gammon all fat removed, egg, hassleback potatoes which were homegrown and a big portion of salad including lettuce, peas, tomatoes, onion, beetroot and pepper. I do think it needs to be a lifestyle change to be maintained - even as a target member my fella comes to slimming world, as we both know food is an issue for us. Target members also don't pay and you only have to come once a month when at target. Also as you get towards the end of your journey like me you build in excersise that we call body magic - it is encouraged there is a whole challenge and certificates for body magic - the slimming world podcast which is free to listen to just encouraged listeners to do a huge step challenge encouraging walking. I think there is also a lot to be said about the comradery of slimming world - it is not like a cult as when you're at target you don't have to go all the time. Also when you get to target you have more freedom with what is called the slim for life plan. Syns stand for synergy not sins that's a coincidence. Think of me, the autistic person that struggles with social interaction? Being part of my group and my group's social team has developed my social skills and has helped me to make lovely friends who I see outside of SW. In terms of syn changes such as muller lights - I know people who were eating 6 of these yogurts a day as a free food so of course these had to be changed to half a syn each to protect member's weightloss. Never have I felt shamed or made fun of in my group - in fact when one of our groups had a clique our consultant told them off. I do appreciate your review but I do feel a lot of positives as in my experience have been missed; every person is different and different things work for different people. I would not knock slimming world or any other weight loss / lifestyle change until you've tried it.

      @@wired_differently_slims_x Hi Amy, thanks for the account of your experiences! It's great that you've lost so much weight. My review is based on all the people who come to me that have failed on SW. From what I've found, it doesn't address any psychological issues. It's more of a "how to eat" programme, however fat loss is essentially an emotional problem. That's why so many people struggle long-term. You said yourself that you still have to go to the meetings. True food freedom is not needing to think about food all the time. The syns used to be sins, but they changed it because they realised how bad that made them look. Again, it's great that you've lost so much weight doing it and I wish you good luck :D

    I’ve lost 6 stone with SW. It’s the only plan that I’ve managed to stick to and I feel amazing. It’s all about moderation. You’re not told to go and eat a kilo of chips or a kilo of pasta. It’s about having a third of your plate speed, a third of your plate carbs and a third protein. As with any food you have to be mindful of what you’re eating and how much you eat. Personally I think some people are too quick to slam SW. If it doesn’t work why do so many people lose weight and keep it off? You have to find a plan that suits your lifestyle. So often the plan doesn’t fail you, it’s you that fails the plan. It all comes down to calorie deficit and if you really want to lose weight nothing will stop you. Excuses stop you. I think it’s easy to generalise. I’m lucky as my consultant is amazing.

      @09fishfish09 hi! I'm not the op but I did sw for around 4 months 10 years ago - I lost 3.5 stone. I was fairly active as I was cabin crew so on my feet all day. I kept the weight off for the past 10 years and I'm now back to the weight I was before SW. Ten years is a fairly good time to keep the weight off. I didn't find that sw gave me bad eating habits etc because I think I've a bit of common sense but i saw people do mental things😂 I don't agree with mashed bananas etc being bad or having 'syns' or any of that and knew that having massive bowls of pasta or potatos 3 meals a day wasn't going to work

      I think some of the things you said were feasible. But you’re completely wrong about healthy eating regarding fruits and vegetables because SW encourages that 100% as one of the plan’s objectives is to have a third of your plate of “speed” foods which are all vegetables (or fruits). Same goes for protein, they encourage members to eat protein at every meal. The “eat as much as you want” statement I agree is silly but in fact this isn’t even possible when your dinner plate already is third full of veggies, third full of protein so the carbs are automatically put into a sensible controlled portion. The other factor you forgot is the comradeship of members for each other. And my consultant is super, would never dream to name and shame, I think that example you quoted happens very rarely. So yes SW does work and because a lot of high fat, high sugar foods are cut from the diet only to be consumed as “syns” it should teach control. But people are human and as with this diet, keto diet, low carb diet, low fat diet, no sugar diet etc etc once they go back to old, bad eating habits, yes the weight goes back on. This is why SW encourage members that have reached their target to still come to their weekly meeting for free!! p.s. I also agree the mashed banana thing is stupid lol

    I've been a Slimming World member for the last 5 years and lost 5 stone following the SW food optimising plan.
    I found your video interesting and a little bit misinformed... You suggest that SW don't advocate their members do exercise whilst following the SW plan. This simply isn't true at all..! SW have an awards plan linked to activity and exercise called "Body Magic" and actively encourage members to take part in this. Also, to suggest that SW isn't nutritional balanced is misinformation too..!
    SW advocate that you fill your plate with a third speed(vegetables), a third protein and a third good carbohydrates for a nutritionally balanced meal.
    The SW company has over 50 years experience in the Slimming industry.
    I believe where a lot of people go wrong is that they treat it as a "diet" and look more to the short term, than the long term benefits.
    I enjoy following the eating plan because it's with very little weighing and measuring and I love the support and comradeship that you get in group from the other members! My consultant is an amazing source of support and inspiration too! 😊

    Slimming World diet is a lifestyle change. I am at target and as stated you do have to stay within 3 pounds greater than or less than your target weight. I now only have to attend every 6 to 8 weeks. And i no longer pay. I dont feel trapped, i feel its the normal 'check' i would keep on my weight. He talks about 'bland, beige' food but SW requires your plate to contain 1/3 speed vegetables such as cabbage, carrots etc and this in turn reduces portion size of carbs for example in the meal. Talks about consultants not needing Nutritional qualigications but they all receive training, have followed the plan themselves so know what works and why.Typical argument from someone who has never tried Slimming World!

    Very interesting. I think the main thing to get your head around is that any diet (whichever one you choose) has to be a lifestyle change. Slimming World is the easiest diet for me to stick to but I’ve done it twice before, lost all the weight I wanted to, then put it back on again within a few years. What I didn’t realise is that I needed to work on my head and psychology first. Now that I’ve done that it’s so much easier. People should choose the diet that works best for them and their lifestyle - doesn’t matter which as they are all pretty much about limiting calories - but also address the psychological issues that cause them to gain weight. Although I do love the SW system of eating, I try to keep protein to a maximum and really think about the nutrients in each meal. So I would say it’s a great diet and fairly easy to stick to, as long as you keep an open mind. To be fair to SW, they do address psychological issues and there are plenty of articles on their online membership area (I’ve never been to group because I live in Germany).

      Yes indeed fat loss is most important, more then weight loss. ❤ The reason they put on the weight, is because we get back into bad habits. I don't fully know, but that's my theory. Pasta I don't believe you can eat endlessly because, it's high in carbohydrates.
      Nutrician is important, are the things we eat giving us good things in our body. Even if I can have chocolate do I need it? But I find it helps me not overeat.
      ❤❤❤❤
      I know for me I need accountability, I get into bad habits. Knowing I will be weighed, helps keep me in track. Yes having to write things down. We need to exercise for fat loss, and increasing health. They encourage fitt log activity. ❤❤

    I think slimming world is a good tool to lose weight but you can’t just do it by itself, you still have to work on yourself, to exercise and learn about portion control. As for SW not working long term, it’s exactly like any other diet, calorie counting or healthy eating plan. If you go back to binge eating and eating crap food every day then of course you will put the weight back on. The overall goal is to learn to eat healthy foods that don’t make you put weight on, eat the occasional treat and be able to go out and eat an over indulgent meal every so often but then learn to get straight back to eating healthy 95% of the time.

  • @lindaWilliams708

    You have things a bit wrong. You have free foods. Yes you don't have to weigh these but you are advised to restrict them to a sensible portion. The only foods you can 'gorge' on are speed foods. These are your fruits and vegetables. So, your plate should be half full of vegetables and the rest made up of lean protein and carbs.
    Healthy extras are 2 portions of dairy and one of fibre.
    Exercise is advised,they call it 'body magic' and they do recognise it helps with mental health and fitness.
    I hope this helps. 🙂

    • @emotionaleatingcoach
      @emotionaleatingcoach  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Heya, I got the free food definition directly from SW. It says "Free Food is what makes Food Optimising so effective and so simple. You can eat it in unlimited quantities (no weighing or measuring needed!) to satisfy your appetite. Filling up on Free Food - which includes lean meat, fruit, veg, fish, eggs, pasta, potatoes and rice - means you’ll be naturally reducing your calorie intake and losing weight."
      The problem here is that most people have a weight problem because they don't deal with portions well + have an issue with emotional / binge eating.

    I’m on Slimming World and I have mixed feelings about it. For example I understand why chia seeds and flaxseeds are synned (high calories density) but I don’t like omitting them because they’re so healthy. It’s not so much about “eat however much as you like” of foods, the point is that foods like pasta and potatoes are very filling but have a relatively low calorie density so you actually don’t end up eating that much of them. Also I don’t know what meals people are posting on Instagram but you’re meant to have 1/3 of a plate of “Speed foods” which are your non starchy veg and fruit - which DOES encourage you to eat nutritionally dense food with each meal and not just have a huge plate of beige food. You’re also encourage to have a high protein food at eat meal, which is listed with a P next to it. I’m only an online member which costs £5 a week, and means I don’t have a consultant or group helping me so I do feel perfectly empowered to do everything myself.

    Interesting angle. I've done SW, only paid for a couple of months until i got the instructions and the hang of it. I lost 4 stone, then i stalled and got frustrated and changed to Keto. I lost very little, i don't know even if i did it right, i found it extremely restrictive and expensive and i gave up after a month and a half, after which i went into a binge mode since i felt so deprived of foods i really liked like pasta ! Yes, i did put weight back on but that was my fault for gorging on rubbish foods.
    I liked SW, for someone like me that doesn't like portion control, weigh things and having to control every little aspect of what goes into my mouth, it was great. Basically you could eat anything you wanted with some tweaks, yes, have that pasta bolognese but make it with lean mince and use fry light to fry the onions. Have that little bit of chocolate, eat your veggies, cook food from scratch !
    Long term, i think people give up because take aways win and you no longer monitor, even roughly, how much chocolate or crisps you're eating. Also, it's a mind frame thing, if you've been obese then other things are going on other than just liking food a bit too much.

    • @emotionaleatingcoach
      @emotionaleatingcoach  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I agree...difficult weighing and measuring of food doesn't work. The part you said at the end is what is missing from SW...the help with why that happens. You basically hit the nail on the head - it's easy to blame it on yourself, but WHY did that happen? What about the plan did not help you want to make the right decisions? ...that's what it's missing.

    I’m listening to your video as I’m typing this and it’s getting worse by the minute. if people use slimming world properly it’s actually an education piece (for less knowledgable people) about eating good proteins, carbs and fats. All the ‘zero’ foods are clean unprocessed food, things like lean proteins (meat, veggie and vegan choices), pulses, legumes, high protein Greek yogurt. Also a stack load of veggies and fruits - in fact it encourages dieters to pile their plates with veggies (as many colours as possible). Its one of the healthiest diets out there. Promotes cooking from scratch and limits processed, high fat/salt and sugary food. It talks about portion size, and not chucking endless pasta on a plate. God knows where you’ve got the endless pasta thing from. SW talks about % on plates for carbs, veggies and proteins quite often in their books and online. Plus, you can choose wholemeal pasta and brown rice and better carb choices if you choose. It’s a great starting point for people who do not have very good basic nutrition knowledge without scaring them off. If people put the weight back on (as you say) it means they’re not learning from the process and changing habits longer term. Their choice. In fact that’s a common occurrence whether people use an online app, private nutritionist, personal trainer, group clubs etc. Without consistency and keeping the momentum up, it’s for nothing. I’m pretty clued on on nutrition and SW was the best solution for me when I put on around a stone a couple of years back, as it ensures I ate enough to still continue all my exercise, but slowly and steadily lose weight. No crash diet, no faddy cutting of any food types out. Trouble with many diets is the restriction, SW is simple for a person starting out on their journey. I agree with you that some of the branded food isn’t great (I avoid that but its part of any brand, just like protein bars and shakes are) but you’re twisting the whole banana thing, bananas are free unless they’re purreed. It changes the sugar content. Oh and alikening it to a cult? ‘Twisting food’ choices because they may update food syns occasionally? Seriously mate, that’s BS - you are making an awful mess of this. Saying the food is beige?!? Fruit and veggies are completely free to eat as much of as you like? In their natural state (not puréed or made into a shake) veg and fruit are fibrous and fill people up naturally. Go back on insta and take a look at some of the slimming world food again, there are hundreds if not thousands of wonderful Meals people are creating. Also, the whole point of syns (agree, possibly not the best name for treats) is you can still have one or two treats a day. I used to have avocado or nuts. Others may still like a donut, up to them. Or a wine. Nothing is completely off the cards. Or I would have two or three squares of dark chocolate or similar. You really are complicating a great starting diet for the less well knowledgable about nutrition. I cannot listen to your awful vid any longer!

    The shaming of someone is not something I have ever seen in SW and I have been a member for 6 years. There is much more emphasis now on combining exercise with the eating plan. SW now work in conjunction with the NHS to make sure the plan is correct for its members. I do agree about the amount of free food you can eat and I personally would word this better. You are encouraged to eat a third of your plate of vegetables (referred to as Speed foods) as these are lower in calories than other food groups along with certain vegetables. Eg broccoli is a speed food but peas or not and are classed are a free food. SW teaches you to change your lifestyle and choices you make for life . A person could follow your direction but could still go back to eating high calorie, sugary foods. Getting your mind set correct is the key and identifying why we crave certain foods. I do not know about the training to be a consultant and it isn't a regulated qualification, rather like the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist of which only a dietitian is a regulated qualified health professional.

      It is a rather cynical view. Lets be honest, there isn't ever going to be a shortage of punters in western society with all the crap junk foods about and the increasing availability due to delivery apps such as Deliveroo and Just Eat. I don't think it's fair to say that SW is keeping people fat for financial gain with this in mind. SW relies on referrals from people who have done and are doing the program and also from a steady stream of success stories, which often push people over the line to the sign up page. Undoubtedly, most fail, but that is the same for any diet as will power is required in all of them and some just can't keep it going consistently, which is the secret to weight loss in my opinion, no matter what diet you do...

    So what’s the answer…then?
    I think SW is great for a good kick start and a beginning of a journey but the hardest part is keeping the weight off after loosing it.
    I think it’s just as important to educate yourself about good nutrition and understanding that every food has calories unfortunately SW don’t teach the calorie deficit. That’s where you have to learn the basics yourself.
    I’ve done SW plan on/off several times, it does work for the short term but not always in the long term. I agree SW is a business but let’s face it they don’t really have much competition. I can see the pros & cons but I definitely believe it’s a business in the dietary industry but I do get very good short term results.
    I feel we’re becoming a fatter & unhealthier nation but look at some other parts of the world, we rarely see overweight or obese Japanese ppl. The food industry has a lot to answer to. All the chemicals , and E numbers in our food groups.
    I don’t believe free food on the SW plan is actually free food, I in particular couldn’t have as much hard carbs as the next person on a SW plan but it’s really discovering what works best for your body & metabolism. Eat until your satisfied , being in control of portion size, understanding why we are tempted to over eat / binge. There really is a lot to consider.
    I’m sitting on the fence with this one but I will take all the help I can get. We have to rely upon ourselves and be accountable but until I can get to grips with this on my own I will continue to pay the business my weekly fee as I need the support system as I obviously can’t do it alone I’m in a circle that keeps repeating itself. 😮

    I think you have to use common sense, especially with regards to the Free, "unlimited" carbohydrates, and realize its not going to work if you eat them for every meal. I tend to limit my carbs to the evening meal, and plan the rest of the day around that.
    I have also found it's more about making sensible choices, swapping full fat to fat-free, having fat-free yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, rather than crips, chocolate and a bottle of pop.

    What about using the “eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full” theory, you could use this in conjunction with a plan like this couldn’t you? I’m not on any diet myself, I have been using the hunger/satiety method and have done lots of research on nutrition, and personally for me, this has been a blast. Diets in general don’t really cover the internal aspects of why we eat and keep gaining weight. I look for physical hunger cues before I start eating, and I look for healthy nutritious foods that really satisfy me for longer, so proteins, fibres etc. Also, when I feel full (not stuffed), I stop. If I find myself wanting food for the sake of eating it without being physically hungry, I ask myself whether I’m actually hungry or not. I’ve noticed that my snacking habits and cravings, especially nighttime cravings, have reduced, because I’ll only eat when hungry, and having meals that are nutritious and satisfying is very useful and more beneficial.

      @@emotionaleatingcoach hi Harry, this is very true. When I was at college, I once heard someone say that diet & lifestyle change long-term is about 90% psychological and the rest is the physical and external factors. I was just mentioning this to my mum earlier who is also making effort to change her eating habits for the better, and she just joined SW recently. She too has a lot of struggles with this and ingrained coping behaviours from her childhood. She grew up in a time where there’d be no food in the house until my Nan and grandad came home from work with food for the family’s dinners every night. If she left her food, chances were that she couldn’t return to it later when she was hungry again, because someone would’ve got there first. She was also bullied and taunted at school for her body shape too. I’ve grown up around the insecurities she had. I’ve also been through some depression and anxiety in my college and Uni years and was put on meds to control the mood swings I was having. We both did various dieting plans but none seemed to work full time for us. There’s a lady based in the US called Corinne Crabtree who runs her own program that looks at the emotional/psychological aspects of weight management and eating habits. I often scroll through her various podcasts and livestreams on FaceBook, and they give a valuable insight into what goes on in our heads every day when it comes to food or anything beyond that.

    Although Slimming World does cost while slimmers are losing, if the successful slimmers maintain their weight within 3 lbs you don't need to pay a meeting fee.

    Yep when I went to slimming world I put on weight I was told it had to be what I was eating my consultant used to get very angry. I pointed out prednisolone does make you gain weight it’s in the side effects- she said that’s because 1 person out of thousands probably did doesn’t mean it’s right
    I was then diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome which is caused by prednisolone or a tumour and I don’t have a tumour (as far as I know because it’s been a while since my scans were done) and that increases cortisol and so I not only redistribute and retain fat but also water if I’m off steroids for a week or two I lose weight I look normal not puffy But she wouldn’t have it. Now I have very severe lung disease and so steroids can’t be avoided I’ve been on them 10years without them i am in hospital eating shit. I remember this woman one day asking me to leave the group I’d I can’t accept that prednisolone causes me to retain water and fat whilst I’m on treatment (a medically proven fact) I never went back because it was rude but also I had eaten the exact same thing as two weeks before when I lost 9lbs (was not on steroids then) so how is it my fault?? Now I do eat more than I should I drink milk it’s not good but waiting for a Nissen fundoplication surgery for severe heart burn you can only have so much gaviscon a day even drinking water causes it because years of coughing has caused my valve that prevents acid flowing up to lay flat so once I’ve had my tablets and gaviscon it’s milk that cools my throat or I’m sick then can’t breathe and then more steroids…
    I’ve been counting my calories for the past month and whilst I did feel hungry to begin with that’s settled now. I now account for all my milk I consume in my calories and reduce fat elsewhere. But I’ve lost a 5lbs (I did indulge at Christmas so would’ve been more) and I’m much happier not having to explain myself or be told I don’t know about my own medical condition and my consultant (as in lung specialist) is lying about my prednisolone before my lung issue arose I was a size 8 I was 9s 8lbs and had a perfect bmi then steroids started a year later Cushings and it was a mess. Also couldn’t run anymore or dance or cycle without ending up in an ambulance and so that didn’t help and isn’t helping. But I’m slowly working on losing some weight and no pressurising myself whilst gaining some fitness in day to day tasks I usually struggle to do and build from there. I’m not trying to be slimmer of the week or year or whatever I’m just trying my best each day

The idea is to change habits so you can keep going after you meet your goal. You are not told to deprive yourself of yr favourite food yr just told to limit them or if you can, substitute them. Basically yr saying slimming world is bad and yr service is better but what happens when yr clients leave you, they can easily put the weight back on too. I just started slimming world and people there were talking about how they completed a half marathon so I don't see how you are saying they don't encourage you to exercise as they clearly did. Doesn't the portion control have the same problem as diets. If you reduce your portions than feel like you don't eat enough then you will regain your weight in the long term. When you talked to people who used word Slimming World did you ask them about how their eating habit changed maybe the problem was that change rather than the losing weight program. I never tried Slimming World but I how it's not restrictive.

      Learning to judge portion sizes is only part of what most people need. The point is that the more complicated something is (counting points and syns), then the more likely it is that someone will stop.

    Slimming world is a healthy eating plan not a diet I have a friend who eats almost exactly the way the slimming plan works and she has never been to slimming world in her life. People who put weight back on are coming off plan getting things and eating things that are full of empty calories. There is no right or wrong way to lose weight you should do what works for you and if that's slimming world then why not. Most people that struggle with weight and eating food go up and down because it's not just about over eating no different to someone who struggled with substance or alcohol it's in your head and there can be mental blocks that stop us staying on goal but like other addictions and that's what food can be for some people then it's always going to be jumping on and off the band wagon until professionals medical and other wise realize this then nothing much will change. They know that people won't eat all that a five pound bag of rice,pasta,potatoes etc but for people who need it it's there once you have been on plan 3 months at least you are starting to eat meals like you should. I don't really understand your reasoning saying it makes you not think for yourself. It's put in place for people like myself the recipes as I am useless at drumming up meal ideas. The mashed banana I would say yes I don't understand that but I think it has something to do with releasing sugars and changing its levels but bananas are high in natural sugars as are grapes. The yougarts are now syn valued because ppl were eating five and six at a sitting so the syn value was changed. But as I said even calorie counting in other plans of weight loss is a dismal business no matter whether it's hr, ww,sw,any old calorie counting ppl get depressed and eating may make them feel happy then the guilt kicks in and you may eat high fat high sugar high carbs empty calories again and put on more weight. It's the constant battle that's depressing you lose as you said 5 stone put it back on its because you got comfortable again took your eye off the ball!! It's like doing your house work done ppl don't like it you are not going to keep your house tidy by doing house work once a month once a year etc it's something that has to be done every day to work. But how do you cope with that when you hate it

I stopped going to group in March (corona) and recently rejoined group, I had gained 14lb... that being said, I didn’t weigh myself and I knew I ate more crap than I should of been doing, I was happy with the gain. Since going back to group however I have felt crappy and have decided that slimming world, although it has giving me a huge kick start in weight loss, will now be getting left behind. I totally agree that sw folk gorge on weigh day, I do myself, however during lockdown this very rarely happened. The biggest issue I have come to realise (and you helped) was the 2 day binges I have eaten after every weigh day. I couldn’t wait for a Friday so I could eat what I wanted, complete madness. I have no intention of continuing slimming world, but am extremely grateful that it taught me to enjoy vegetables, and now they make up a large portion of my diet. I have also just started tracking calories, on a cheat day I would eat upwards of 7000 on a “good” day it was averaging 900! I’m looking forward to this next month, I am going to fully trust in calorie counting and moderate exercise while not having any “cheat” meals/days

    Thanks so much for your video! I’ve done slimming world in the past and just joined again a couple of months ago. But since joining this time, I’ve had so many doubts in my mind about the whole psychology behind it, like calling certain foods ‘syns’. I also noticed during the meetings that unless you were getting a weight loss of 2 lbs or more each week, you were made to feel like a bit of a failure, where as I have been happy with losing around one pound each week, as I know if I were losing 2 or 3 pounds each week I would put it back on much more easily. Hi Harry🤗
    Im a new sub to ur channel & currently binge watching a few (40 ish) of ur vids
    So grateful this is not my story because from my 1st sw meeting where frylight & low fats mullers were pushed on me I knew it wasn't a diet for me as i am a cal gal which i later found out to be a very dirty word in sw comminty - I hated syns & had issues with 🥑🍌 & smoothies. The so called consultants didnt make sense so i never followed the plan. I did like the accountability & support in short burst so i joined for a few weeks & did my own thing but my losses were not as good as the other Sw members.
    My frustration was that i have changed so many bad habits for the better & constantly maintaining. 7 years later still at 1½ stone loss so my "after after" is not too shabby considering what i have seeen with the majority of sw members who have ended up fatter sicker & now 1 recently diagnosed with T2 diabetes!! & she's quite young too. Im not surprised at all as sw can be very carby & high in artifial sugars syrups poured on fruit pots jelly crystals frozen on grapes the list is endless. Because it's a low fat diet the members think it's healthy where i think the plan is a lot of bull which could be 100% better.
    Ive watched & followed some great Docs & nutritionists on utube plus a lot of "journeys" & finally found a way of eating i love by learning & pinching best bits from a few diets & nutritionists. Im happy to lose 1lb or main each week & eating what i like.
    I was so upset when Dr Moseley died as i learnt a lot & changed my diet for the better with his advice.
    I felt a bit strange being so down about someone i didn't now & selfish as i was thinking about myself aswell.
    Im a Christian & feel since his death ive found 3 really great accounts to follow Tonic Health on Insta & Autumn Bates plus Ur Good Self. My losses have started again & im finally getting good runs of 1-2lbs a week🙌🏾
    I eat twice a day as can't fit in 3 meals due to fasting which i love & still cant believe i do every day. I enjoy my food more as my food nausea & the food noise of constantly thinking what to eat is reduced.
    I did like some things about SW the principle of eating as much veg & lean meat as i want only because i naturally dont eat enough of nutrient dense & protein rich foods.
    I agree that people need to empower themselves & the after after photos show the results aren't great. I used to be so impressed with the losses but years later the majority i watched have gained most of weight back & more. The foods they showed in what i ate were huge & tasteless imo & i dont think a lot of people were eating foods they truly really enjoyed.
    Looks like I'm following the new trend as interested in giving 121 coaching a go in future if i feel i need additional help.
    🙏🏽 for ur channel loving what I'm hearing & maybe i will become a client if i feel the need but in the meantime I'm finally doing ok by myself.
    I'm on a mission to let my fave utube friends who are exhausted with Sw know about u & that there are other ways to lose weight & keep it off🤩
    Keep Up the good work.

    I realise this is an outdated video but a couple of things..
    Avocados are not a healthy extra. In fact, they are 14 out of your 15 daily syns for a whole one lol.
    Also, there is some emphasis on exercise. You get a book titled "body magic" (their lingo for "exercise" lol) as well as awards for completing weekly exercise goals.
    I'm mindblown that these consultants arent qualified nutritionists but honestly this does make sense. I have a friend who has been going to sw for years and she literally does not understand calories in vs calories out. She genuinely believes that as long as she's on plan 100%, it's impossible for her to gain weight. She eats so much potato and pasta bro.
    Lastly, I was a bit confused by the hand portion sizes. A fist is simple enough but a palm and a cupped hand are a little more subjective. Is that heaped or no? Slimming world advise dividing your plate equally 3 ways for carbs, protein and veg but don't give specific portion size recommendations.

    I get what you are saying, but I don't really agree. For example, I joined slimming world in 2019 and lost a stone. I left the group and I put back the weight. Though, I think it's nothing to do with slimming world not working but because I ate terribly. Slimming World should train you to eat well. It is 240 pounds per year but in all honesty all the support you get and the fact you do lose weight eating the things you like still is pretty great. Of course you need exercise, but for example I'm way too heavy to run or do anything but light exercise, so I'd rather walk for an hour and tone up once I lost a lot of weight.
    Even if I were to gain weight again, is going to be my "fault" for not controlling my eating habits. You could theoretically do Slimming world on your own, and not pay a penny like I'm doing now. And once the weight is lost at lest in part, it's good to introduce exercise. Of course Slimming World aims to earn money and would want for you to join the group, but even if you join for a few months to get the gist of it and leave, you can control your eating habits on your own. Other things like personal trainers and nutritionists... You have to pay them too. So at the end of the day, you have to pay someone at first to show you how to eat properly. Ultimately it's up to us to keep healthy.

    • @emotionaleatingcoach
      @emotionaleatingcoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. What you said at the beginning is exactly my point...you have to be totally focused and on the diet to get results. As soon as something happens or you stop doing it you haven't got the skills to habitually live life on your own. Does that make sense? Other than that, all the mental side that it doesn't teach you...long-term motivation, emotional eating/cravings, self-worth etc...
      Walking is great! So I totally advise that.
      And in terms of paying, I'm not disagreeing with that. Paying something to help gets you past the trial and error - but it has to be the right thing - not failing and blaming it on yourself.
      For me it's sad, that's why I try and point these things out. I've spoken to women who have done SW on and off for 15-20 years.

    • @NadiWLJ
      @NadiWLJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emotionaleatingcoach Don't get me wrong, you speak a lot of sense and as an afterthought, I'd say it's true that Slimming World's program if far from perfect. In my opinion, because their selling point is its flexibility, they give total liberty for you to eat as much as you want of certain things. But perhaps getting used to eat smaller portions is something to think about. I'd say the flexible plan is both its winning point and its downfall, if you get what I mean, as leaving the responsability to people who responsabile with their food are not.
      I'd say what's good about slimming world is that you are always full and content. But you have to be smart when you do it. And if you have a day when you just want to eat what you want, it's not the end of the world. I personally have lost one and a half kg in 5 days, so far so good. I'm loosely following the plan. I can't afford eating any sweets just yet cause I have a lot of weight to lose, but I can fit a square of chocolate here and there. Also, did anybody mention SP days to you? As I said, there are flaws in SW but it does help to understand what is the food that fills you up with less calories.

    • @emotionaleatingcoach
      @emotionaleatingcoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I get what you mean and especially when you're in the process, it can seem like it's working and is different to other diets. One of the problems is the total food liberty as for most people, that's why they are in the position they are in - having no control over food. You're not taught the psychological part of how to control cravings.
      And I get that there are rules in place to control the portions (like the SP foods), but rules box you in and create internal pressure which over time leads to stress and the black and white mindset of being on and off the diet.
      You mentioned before that when you left the group you put the weight back on...In your opinion, why was that?
      For me it sounds like you're part of the growing list of people that I've spoken to that try the diet, say it was good, but when they "stop", the weight comes back on. You have to ask, why was that?
      In my opinion, SW is just a nutrition plan which is only part of the puzzle for weight loss. It doesn't address any of the mental side, which without doing, you're just using willpower to lose some weight, but then as soon as you relax, old ways return. Does that make sense?

    • @NadiWLJ
      @NadiWLJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emotionaleatingcoach oh yeah I mean, the mindset is everything really. Why did I put on weight, you ask. I lacked discipline and ate anything without caring if it was calorific or not. I want my health back. I need to lose the weight and I'm trying to eat responsabily, already I am having physical benefits. As I said, I'm not defending slimming world I know it is terribly flawed but I see no way out of this tunnel and this, right now, I feel it's all I have. The state should support people and refer who needs to nutritionists. Being overweight is totally crap and it's not easy to lose weight, retrain yourself to eat well takes a lot of effort. So yeah in substance, slimming world is not great, but it's the only thing many people in the UK know. I mean the doctor suggested I joined..

    • @emotionaleatingcoach
      @emotionaleatingcoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I totally agree. And it comes from that place despiration + the options seeming convincing enough.
      People feel they should be able to do it on their own because it's their own body. However you're not expected to cure other medical issues - you accept this and ask for expert help, right.
      My problem with people doing SW is that it's wasted time and money. You may drop some weight but if you end up back where you started (or worse because of the metablism drop), you could have saved this money up to get help from a more complete approach.

    Loved this, and you made so much sense. I remember slimming world from the red and green days way back when. Corned beef in a tin was “free,” and I remember making lots of corn beef quiches, and tin burgers in gravy were “free”. Those were the bad old days lol. I was so out of control with the “free” foods and I lost the ability to control what I was eating. If it was free, it was free . We all find what works for us in the end I guess, but it’s just a shame it costs us in so many ways to find out what works for us and what doesn’t .

    I listened to your video and the more I listened the more annoyed I became. I am doing slimming world and am loosing weight. Slimming world deals with the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the complexity of the reasons why people over eat. I think they are right it would be inappropriate for a consultant to engage in looking deeper into someone’s life. I don’t think what you are describing goes any deeper than slimming world. As for exercise I have been encouraged to exercise and they have certificates when a certain amount of is completed. I’ve also had therapy and believe me I would never work through the issues I have with a “coach”. I have come across lost of people who say someone else’s method is rubbish and there is the answer. I always avoid such people.

    Sorry you really don't know enough about slimming world. I've lost 11 st 7 lb with sw ... They tell you to put a 2rd speed on your plate before free food so no not a plate full of pasta . When you get to target they let you go for free to help to stay at target and hope you can do it on your own by then and only need to check in once in 8 weeks . They teach you to have fruit veg every day which I never did . Some things you say are right but not many and they do encourage you do exercise it's called body magic .

  • @andrewlee5237
    @andrewlee5237 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m sorry but no one forces target members to give up on their loss and spending £6 per week is still less than having a take away blow out cost £20.00 per week. Also if a member lacks in protein intake and doesn’t exercise because they never did it’s not SW fault if people lose muscle mass. I’m not sure why you have an issue with SW when 60% of the population is overweight and appear not to have any motivation to loss weight and just sneer at SW members. Your advice is over complicated and not sustainable, but hey if you are making money from disillusioned SW then good for you. We have an explosion of diabetes, cancers and heart disease. Leave members alone 🤬

    • @emotionaleatingcoach

      If you have succeeded with it, good for you. What I teach is based on what many failed SW members have told me so there is obviously something going on there.

    There's some inaccuracy. I left very easily. They also encourage superfree foods which are high in nutrients, and encourage protein.
    Also, they encourage eating high protein for fullness and maintaining muscle mass... at the end of the day, the reason people gain weight is by letting go and eating mindlessly again... every diet would fail with this logic.
    They are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but they can't do it for someone!

    Thank you Harry brilliant vlog, I completely get what you are saying, I have watched many people on TH-cam over a number of years and yes they lost weight but they have all fallen by the wayside and are no longer on TH-cam. I do believe I have read that these slimming clubs only have a 5% long term success rate. I have joined slimming world on 3 occasions out of desperation but find that the obsession with free foods, speed foods and syns drives me crazy all day long one is concerntrating on what you are going to eat next and the categories the food falls into. There is one lady I follow called Tracy Mouse who has lost 8 stone on slimming world and although she follows their guidelines most of them time she puts a lot of effort into her meals, however, as you describe so eloquently she also struggles at times with the restrictions and sticking to the guidelines. Thank you for this vlog, I am going to be watching your walking video as I need to exercise as well as lose weight. Thanks you also for the free documents you posted.

Also the free food you eat until you’re satisfied. I weigh my pasta and potatoes. But at the end of the day your in control what you put in your mouth that’s not slimming world’s fault

    Good one Harry 😁 Exactly my point. It's hard to lose weight/fat and keep it off without knowing how one got fat or big in the first place.
    I've tried SW for two or three months and it worked while I was following their guidance. I didn't like few things there, like fat free dairy (free foods), that's not something I tend to eat, so I knew it's not something I could do all my life. But I did lost the weight I wanted. But, few years after I finished SW, I was almost at starting point. Simply because I didn't found then, why, I was, slowly, but steadily, getting fatter and bigger.

    • @emotionaleatingcoach
      @emotionaleatingcoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. The point is that it's easy to lose weight in the short-term and keep paying money out for that, but for long-term results it takes a lot more delving into the issues.

    I think this is a misleading video...slimming world groups promote balance and moderation and address the psychology of weight issues and weight loss. It’s not really a diet..it’s a healthy way of living ...not something to do for a while then go back to old bad habits. It actually does teach healthy ways of eating for life. Believe it or not even calories are discussed! As are portion sizes. No fads, no silliness...Basic facts of energy and nutrition....and exercise...even walking!...and limiting syns ..the plan speaks for itself. And there is no shame..you’re making it sound like like a Little Britain sketch! Have you ever actually attended groups? It’s the least obsessive plan I’ve ever heard of and fits into real life and is totally sustainable. It teaches you to realise there are no magic bullets for weight loss..it’s energy in, energy out and making good healthy choices. I’m not a consultant and I’m not at target...but it’s kept me at a healthy weight for many years now and I love the camaraderie and friendships that I’ve made through groups. Take a look at this..might explain more

      Hey Carol, it's great to hear that you've made friends at the group and you're positive about your experience. I appreciate that and through my work I speak to hundreds of women (in real life...not just over email) who've been using SW groups for years (15+) and got no results, feel shamed when they don't hit their goals and are in utter dispair with their lives still. I spend a lot of time undoing the psychological impacts of what the diet has done to people and teaching them how to get to their goal and not reboud like a lot of target members do. So there's obviously something going on there. It's very easy to be on the journey and not know what's happening, but in 1, 2, 5, 10 years down the line, think back to this and reflect on where you are with your goal then.
