Mario Quest (Super Mario Bros. Late 1984 Prototype) [Mockup]

- Mario Quest, localized in the United States as Mario's Adventure, is a prototype of Super Mario Bros. developed by Nintendo. This version of the game seems to take more inspiration from Mario's earlier titles (Donkey Kong, Mario Bros.). This ROM was found in October 2023 and seems to be from around December 1984.
The game feels much slower to play compared to the final game, and mechanics unique to this prototype such as screen-by-screen underground scrolling, auto-scrolling sky levels, and branching world paths were cut for seemingly no reason.
This is a mockup made by me, as I wanted to throw my hat in the ring for some "found media" fan content. I wanted to add more like a castle level and King Koopa fight, but I got burnt out on this and kind of just wanted to move on. Even things that were almost finished like a different version of the Starman and Warp Zones (called Negative Zones in this version) were cut. Maybe someday I'll work on a better - more polished - Mario fangame.

“Make it look like they’re playing Mario but just don’t make it too similar ya know?”
This is what they'd be playing on Muppet Babies, given what their Donkey Kong looked like.
similar to the mario movie where the donkey kong arcade game is just some other game instead of mario
I appreciate that there's no spooky analog horror nonsense, just a cool video.
Don’t really care for the analog horror twists anymore; one person did it then everyone started doing it & it’s stale now
I thought it was going to be another stupid creepy pasta as well.
Analog horror nonsense, unless real hardware is used, is instant dislike for me.

I like how it feels so familiar but is completely different. Just like a dream
your telling me he can throw fireballs.WITHOUT A FIRE FLOWER!!!!!!!
i love how realistic this is, because if the game was rushed and unfinished, certain parts would be slightly different
He does in Smash :>
@@ShinK_319 i do know
I think there was something about mario having a gun at one point in development

This looks like something you'll find in the early NES games
Really convincing
For some reason this looks to me like a fusion between Super Mario Bros. (NES) and Super Mario Land (GB)
Bits of SMB2 as well
when i seen Mario's arm flap up and down i thinked of Dr. Mario.
I love this! Can we get a version of this video without the applied Audio/Video Filters? Beta's of Mario Games have always been my favorite and one of SMB1 (even if fake) sufficiently peaks my interest! I also like the music, maybe even a rip of this OST? Perhaps I'm gushing a bit =)
These are the games that they show at E3 and then they never realease !
Wow, what an incredible VHS tape. Really, I thought it was the best. I think I see a great future in you, making this type of content, and I'm sure you like making Mario Bros. ARGs.
I see great talent in this. Great VHS. 👋🏻
I really like that underground theme
Wow I LOVE this! Great job!!
I like some of the visuals better here than in the final game.
I was definitely expecting something creepy
i like how the second level has the Music of the underwater level but different style
The goombas came way later but other than that, very accurate
1:36 and 2:08 the pipe sound is the same as hit sound effect used in Super Mario Bros. Wonder
i thought goombas didn’t exist until the last second of development though?
this is a neat mockup but that first line in the description just makes no sense to me. why would a prototype be localized?
Planned release
Make it make sense. The arcade game Mario Bros. already existed, so they wouldn't call this "quest"
Why are the graphics and sound so much better than what we got?
Damn !! The flying cloud and turtles are soooo F***** COOL !!!
Fun fact: The All Stars title screen soundtrack is a reference to the title screen from this game.
Looks awesome!
Mario's jump sound effects have their duty cycles switched.
this is some nice editing
odd how no prototypes of SMB have ever been found,
Because there was no prototype. Scrapped ideas were never coded into the game.
@@benjaminreed5010 idea:
thought up
coded into game
possibly scrapped at any time, even after coded into game
like the tanooki leaf in mario world or the magenta block
I wonder why they decided to make the background scroll like on smb special in the underground level and make it scroll normally on the overworld level
This is amazing and I might have to try this game!!!
The fact that we don't have any of the SMB beta/prototype yet makes it seem legitimate and real to some extent. Pretty cool
Esta increible te dejo mi like
Cool
A ROM download would be nice!
Here, I can see how the Goombas were supposed to be based on chestnuts, not mushrooms.
The ending part looks scary
this feels like if mario land had an nes port
Did you use an actual Video tape to record this with? The filter looks amazing
It's weird to think that Orson Welles could've played this
This is cute
looks too good. way more detailed than final game
Hey, this is nice stuff! Is it a ROM or an indipendent game? And how did you make it?
An animation most likely.
@@ALFFanInfinite Whoa! It seems a real video game
Hi, this is a playable game made in Unity. Unfortunately I don't feel too comfortable sharing a download right now cause of Nintendo. Sorry!

El primer super Mario pero en una realidad alterna
It would be more convincing with placeholder music, not demade versions of the same compositions as the final game.
Is this on an actual video tape?
Rom?
can you please give us a download link for this? cheers mate
No this is a mockup.

How can a mockup???
I kinda sounds like spy vs spy 🤔
While this is cool. I can’t help but feel like the fact that the game looks too complete does ruin the while prototype gag. I think for future mockups making the game have jank in the menus and some glitches would 100% boost that prototype work in progress fell. Mostly light glitches and debug menus and mem/cpu usages or something akin to sonic 1’s debug coordinates.
2:14 looks like that Austrian Painter saying hail....🧐
PLS ADD BLOOD ON THE VIDEO PLS!!!
Excelent hack 😎
Kinda resembles super Mario land
Oh, so it’s fake… so why didn’t you just say so in the title screen?
?

Its not a rom
mockup. not a real game
Explain why the NES is displaying more individual colors than it can. If you're gonna make a mock up meant to be plausible, at least try.
I couldn't tell.
"at least try" as if the rest of the work here isn't of any value? nitpicking like this with smite to the rest is what makes people stop this kind of art form entirely
