I first heard Kino on a Ukrainian radio station and I was surprised because I had never heard a singing voice like Viktor's before. Now, the song I heard on the radio (Zakroy za mnoy dver', ya ukhozhu) is one of my favorites in any language along with 'Legenda' and "Spokoynaya noch."

I think he meant it and probably he was right. I don´t think there was much interest in the Russian language at that time, so it´s hard to imagine that people abroad would listen to Russian bands in the 90s. Even know Russian artists have to sing in English to get some traction abroad

Recently it seems there's been an influx of new fans trickling in from the fanbase of Молчат Дома, a Belarusian post-punk band. Their song Судно went viral on tiktok, usually paired with the dark romanticization of life during the Soviet Union. Now there's a ton of compilations of Russian/Soviet "doomer" music with songs by both bands on them.
Personally, I got into Кино because my friend and I are both ethnic Koreans born outside of Korea, like Виктор Цой. We were already fans of Joy Division, so that helped. I watched the movie Лето and it was inspiring because I also make music.
Anyway, I've heard that the recent interest in Soviet music has been due to many governments becoming more right-wing like the US and UK. Even though the USSR had many tragic faults, it's like an escape for those of us who are basically left to die and suffer alone in extremely competitive economies with little to no help from our imperialistic governments and highly individualistic communities

@@somekid7 I have been a fan of kino since early 2019, before tik tok got popular. I heard the song "Grupa Krovi" in a montage with historical footage of MiGs and after hearing it I was like: "man it sounds so good lemme see some more", then I started listening to all of their songs. They sound cool but man when you actually know the lyrics (I memorized some I have a general ideea of what he is singing about in every song) it really hits different. If I will ever have time, I'd learn russian just to understand these songs perfectly.

@@somekid7 Besides the odd ones out like System and Rage, I'd also say there's not many western bands that cover the topics Tsoi touches on in his songs. When they come close to saying something actually profound, they nearly always fall short, where with Tsoi it's more potent so to speak, more real and more genuine. That's just what happens when you aren't making "art" for money and fame.

no song speaks to me like "The Star Called the Sun" , the fear, the bad the sadness, happiness, love and smiles, the uncertainty of life brings it all in this song, no matter how i feel this song will describe it, it makes me feel so much, everything i think i can feel i feel while the song is plays, from the lyrics to the melody, it all speaks to me, i can't describe the feeling of it and i think that's for the best.

Don't wanna disappoint you but he was talking about the people inside the band in the first place.
