Lol he was a big fan of british post-punk and goth music. It is a pretty common way to learn languages and have to say very effective since you enjoy both music and words and want to understand them.
You would be surprised to know how popular western music was in the USSR and how many people back then learned their English form music. And movies. There was like an entire generation who spoke relatively good English just because of that. Or at least understood English well.
