people seem to think the computer tests the volume everytime its plugged it - but all that it really does is to trust what the device partition tells it to be. like any storage, a usb driver has an index the computer reads first to know where files are to find - if you edit said index you can tell it whatever you want.

Friendly reminder that you can actually pay amazon to be featured as amazon's choice. Now that you know that, it makes it quite easy to see that it is nothing more than a sponsored ad.
Regardless, there are tonnes of stuff on amazon that are basically just cheap alibaba Chinese crap with fake reviews that are all manufactured in the same facility sold under different names that people purchase to sell on amazon. That's why you get all those different items from different manufactures that you've never heard of with the exact same product using the same images but with a different name attached to it. Google the name of the company who makes the product, maybe you'll find their website claiming they've been a proud American business that's apparently been around for decades. Find out they are registered in California, go and check their actual registration on the government website only to find out they've only been around for less than 2-4 years and the registered owners are all Chinese.

This most recent Father's Day, my father had been quite adamant that he wanted a 1TB USB drive. I told him that they were still awfully expensive, and he more or less left in a huff. I later got a message from him linking to an Amazon page with an added "HAH! YOU'RE WRONG!" type of comment.
After failing to get him to understand that it was just a scam, I decided to get it anyway. It arrived quickly, but the day before it did so, my father suddenly said he changed his mind and didn't want that anymore. I'd never told him I'd ordered it, so I decided to test it.
The packaging was more professional looking than what you got here, but had no instructions and the packaging was the sort where you could simply snap it in and out of place. Needless to say, it was a scam as expected. 16GB.
The good news is that Amazon actually allowed me to return the product.
Moral of the story: if you have the knowledge to know a scam for what it is, don't just let someone without it convince you to play by the scammers rules.

Part of the problem is that Amazon will receive counterfeit items from a crooked seller, and mix it in with other correct items from honest vendors. To them, a 128GB Sandisk is the same as any other. More than once I've heard of people buying a camera on Amazon, trying to register the product only to find out it's a gray market item and not valid for US warranty. Bottom line, if you want to make sure electronics are the real deal, buy from a source that sells only their own products.

A while ago I volunteered at charity shop that sold some of the nicest donations online and the manager was always worried our seller rating would drop below a certain threshold because it would greatly reduce our ability to sell things/discoverability etc. That seller rating doesn't seem to affect scammers who're willing to use and burn through multiple seller accounts in quick succession is annoying but unsurprising. It seems like a lot of automated security procedures; seller rating, TH-cam reporting, DRM etc, are more likely to affect legitimate users than those they're actually meant to stop.
That's not to say seller rating is useless, it does help keep legitimate Amazon partners honest and responsive but it's a shame it isn't able to stop outright scammers.

Some time ago I ordered a couple of very cheap 16GB USB drives from a China dealer I know to be reputable.
(I can't remember whether Banggood, Gearbest, Tomtop or another of the many similar portals that have now mostly delivered good products to me)
I didn't care about the writing and reading speed, because I only wanted to save data on it for further transfer, significantly less than 16GB each, knowing that I will hardly see these drives again. The drives were surplus goods on offer, and really very cheap for the very practical and stable design shown.
About 3 weeks later the shipment came from China. Inside the ordered USB drives in a beautiful metal case, each packed in this little pouch labeled with "USB cable" with a golden 2TB sticker. I also included a note from my China dealer in English and Chinese:
    Warning, please pay attention!
Dear customer, these U-Drives accidentally have faulty firmware, which indicates an unrealistic memory size. We have tested some drives of this batch, they are U-Drives with different real storage sizes, but at least 16GB under all circumstances. So never save more than a total of 16GB or less on these U-Drives and only use them for your own needs. Passing on only with this note
I then ran a test program that continuously saves randomly generated 512MB files on the stick, and after each save process, it carries out a parity check on the oldest file, and immediately if an error occurs here it also checks the data stored up to that point in time. The drives tested in this way then had real 32GB of real storage space, Genuf security for the promised 16GB for less money than they could hardly be produced in China.
I now use it as an operating system installation data carrier when a major update is due for all of my computers, which saves me a lot of time. Here the cheap things work perfectly.
And yes, these are scammer drives that many customers will certainly offer again as 2 TB drives on Ebay or Facebook.

Fake flash storage is the worst, especially memory cards... People will go on "once in a lifetime" holidays or have taken pictures of people who are no longer with us.
I work with people with mental/physical health problems or people who are technophobic and my advice is usually to run a verifier like you do on the drives, even if the full run takes very long it's worth it so that you don't lose precious memories with all storage devices.
Years ago when 32GB was a "large" capacity SD card, I bought one from Amazon, and it was fake. I contacted the seller and they were genuinely shocked that there was an issue with them, and they couldn't understand how there were so many other sellers selling them at the same price point. They immediately took the product down from sale and issued me a refund. So I guess not everyone (though less these days) knows about the fakes even if they sell these things. I'm certainly glad that Amazon returns are there if you do have an issue with a purchase, but it's heartbreaking when someone comes to you with only a tiny amount of their precious data left and being unable to do anything about it :(
Thanks for the PSA Atomic Shrimp, as always love the videos x

Yknow, it's amazing how few people seem to understand how computers report the size of a USB or other media drive. The computer isn't going to know a drive isn't 2TB if you spoof the drive to be 2TB, just like the computer won't know you won't actually have a Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080TI if you spoof the graphics card to think it is a 2080TI.
Because basically what these scammers are doing is telling the hardware itself it's a specific GPU or capacity until the hardware believes it is exactly what you tell it to be. If the part doesn't even know it's true size or power, how can you expect the computer to know without some specialized tool?

Any company can use this service and nothing will be inspected or approved.
