One time, I got scammed by text (I seem to recall) saying something about my PayPal account needing ID confirmation or it would be closed, and I was smart enough to be suspicious but for some reason was stupid enough to double back on said suspicion. When I'd given the details and realised I'd screwed up, I immediately went downstairs to my mum whom I live with, told her the situation, she got me to change my login credentials on PayPal and took me to the bank to cancel the potentially compromised card. I'm glad I thought to act on it quickly, but it was still personally mortifying. I'm happy to say that I got an email talking about a similar issue recently, but was smart enough to check the app because surely there would be a notification on how to deal with it if there really WAS an issue, and found out there wasn't anything. At first I was really puzzled by it as the email looked somewhat official - even had the header image - but it just felt off to me, so I erred on the side of caution, thinking if there was really an issue they'd be sure to give me some sort of reference number for the problem.

Also it just makes emails load a lot faster. Not that that email address appears to be on any of these scam mailing lists anyway, I've somehow managed to keep it pretty safe.

It's a constantly evolving battle, but often (and as here), the scammers are just using psychological tricks that PT Barnum would have recognised; these are inbuilt weaknesses in our brains that, by default, most people have; they can be overcome by training and conscious effort, but these scams work because they make people *want to* click.

Unfortunately, I've been gotten before by a technique they this wouldn't help with:
Some sites open a small browser window that's used for login.
This website faked that by completely recreating the window in the browser, so that they could make the URL for the window look real.
The only tell was that the "window" could not be dragged out of the webpage.

I only fell for password stealing scam once. My kinda-friend reached out to me over instagram to let me know that pictures he sketched of my photography were submitted in to a contest, in which we won. Since I did post my photography to Instagram and he posted manga-style art, it made enough sense in the moment and I tapped the link in the message to view his entry.
I was then prompted with a login screen. I didn't question why it was there because it showed my instagram account picture. But after I entered my password and was told I won a free iPhone from the contest. I soon realized I screwed up. I didn't press the collect prize button but I realized the scammer already had my password.
I was lucky. There was only about 5 minutes between me initially entering my password into the fake login and me changing that password, and scammer didn't try to access my account until hours later. (I know because I got an email from instagram, thinking I was locked out of my account.) But I still should of known better. That friend's message had some typos and also was sent twice, to which I chalked up as a duplicate message glitch, but was actually the same message slightly reworded.
TL;DR: Don't trust links in DMs either.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

That's how they get people - phishing emails often seem laughably implausible to people when they are presented alone, but coincidence is a significant factor in the way they work. For example, most people aren't expecting a package delivered by FedEx today, but if the scammers send out 10 million emails about a FedEx package, a proportion of them will happen to land on people who are expecting one, and those people might click.

What always gets me is how many little, not bugs, but sloppy issues major sites have that can make hacks worse or that make the stupid things we do when we aren't thinking worse. When I find them I always try to report them. A couple times they've even changed them. I got a low risk Chrome issue fixed once that I took through their security tracking reporting system and reported one to some of the big email companies (a while back, it included Gmail, but the other three were Yahoo, AOL and Hotmail) where they didn't mask your recovery information so someone who got into one email account could get your other email account name, and people are lazy so I figured they might use the same password. Now they've got both your emails. That was before cellphone numbers were a common way to verify, so at least they weren't showing those. The Chrome one, was one they'd patched before but popped back up. If you log into the Chrome password feature you can see your other site passwords if you've saved them. The problem was that you could actually leave that page without shutting out the session. If someone used a public computer someone else could go to that page. As long as Chrome hadn't shut down and you hadn't actually hit the log out button all your passwords for every site you'd ever clicked for Chrome to save were unmasked. Now if you leave the page you have to log back in. Of course if you probably shouldn't be logging into Chrome on a public computer anyway. The 'people don't often access this feature often and it would only affect them if were also being lazy about security' exploits are everywhere, but people be lazy. :)
I wish that sites showed a list (masked) of any addresses it is forwarding and recovery to right up in your face, not several clicks in. I tried suggesting that after a friend's email kept getting hacked over and over. Most people don't know to click through to check for forwarding addresses. I think the hacker probably just got in once and set the recovery password to themselves.

I almost ignored an important message from my council once because of the knowledge that 'proper authorities will not try to pressure/scare you', but I checked up on it (via very alternate channels). It was a weird day, to get a message stating 'your council tax is late, if you do not pay soon we will start taking action' (or something like that) when my last correspondance about the council tax had been 'you owe nothing!' They had a phone number to call which matched the one on the website, so I assumed that might somehow (no idea how) be compromised and emailed the council instead, who confirmed that they did in fact think I owed money... Still no idea how they managed to fail to send me council tax bills until suddenly sending a text about it though.

Quite ironically, that probably depends more on how secure other sites you visit within that same browser profile are rather than how unsafe those sketchy sites are. Not withstanding browser security bugs (best kept in check with regular updates), websites can't escape the browser sandbox unless you explicitly grant them permission to (e.g. installing browser extensions, accepting or even executing downloads, accessing microphone/webcam), whereas there are a number of ways websites can mess with other websites despite the same-origin policy that separates them by default. The precautions go from a separate browser profile (if not just private mode, which is a pain for websites like Deviantart or Pixiv that hide NSFW content without a login, also it can't hide stuff like your bookmarks) to a separate browser to a separate operating system in a VM depending on how paranoid you are.

I work a lot with elderly and trying to fix their computer problems and such, and it's actually surprising to me how little they tend to buy email phishing scams like this. It seems to actually be younger people that fall for these more, presumably since we tend to explore and click stuff more to figure out what they do as opposed to elderly being rather intimidated and backing away from most confrontation.

"I need to get an Amazon gift card for a cancer patient"
Ah yes, because weak, immunocompromised people bound to hospital beds require amazon gift cards all of a sudden.
