Started getting Wish ads on a load of sites, pretty hilarious to be honest. It's a good laugh if you want to go on there and point the scams out with your mates.
Do you by chance still have the internals? I'd be interested in removing the potting to see if any information can be pulled from the die. On a side note, does wish do anything to protect buyers like AliX, Amazon, etc. Or are you basically just left out to dry in the rather large chance you get had?
AtomicShrimp I have a fake iPhone 6s with a 32gb "external" SD card mounted inside, the "internal" card reads as 64gb, but it's actually about 2gb. No utility reports the actual capacity of the device, the native internal android jellybean operating system is skinned to look like iOS 9. No matter what size SD card I put in it (it's hard to do, done it a couple of times), it always says capacity is 64gb within ES Explorer. So this does not surprise me at all
Social Spit unfortunately it's very very easy for Chinese manufacturers to do this, as well as enter fake branding, VID(vendor ID) and PID(product ID) numbers to make knockoffs seem real at first glance, and hopefully (for them anyway) long enough for buyer protection on eBay, Alibaba, AliExpress, etc. to run out before someone puts enough files on them and realizes their old files are just being corrupted or overwritten to keep up the appearance that it still has plenty of space left -_- I can imagine how highly annoying this would be, especially if you're like me and just push all photos and large files to external storage.
I actually love that shirt! Send me a message if you'd be interested in making me one I can buy off you. I'd do it but I'm lazy and don't have the tools, but I'd love to rock one!
Awwwww, I wish this video was around about five years ago when I fell for this stupid scam. I bought a 2TB flash drive for something crazy cheap, like in the single digits $$. I was a dumb teen at the time. I uploaded YEARS worth of stuff onto it, including screenshots of my friends and I in video games, concert pictures, pictures of my babies (aka my current and late cats), school work that I was very proud of, etc. So naturally, I was devastated when I went to access everything on it a while later and everything was gone. I deleted everything from my PC after I uploaded it, so everything is just gone forever. Did everything I possibly could to get it all back. I know life will go on, but it’s really heartbreaking. Those pictures of my cats that passed away were irreplaceable.
at first i was sad because you lost your videos and pictures... then i saw that you had pictures of your cat and you dont have them anymore. and i got angry ):
I know exactly how you feel, I did the same thing, bought one of these fakes years ago and thought I had everything backed up, deleted the other copies, went to access them a long time later and all 'corrupt' ....the world has some truly horrid inhumans in it that would do this to people. Same category as phone scammers ripping off the most vulnerable often elderly in the population.
WILL THIS BE A 2TB MEMORY STICK (GONE WRONG) (ALMOST DIED) BE SURE TO WATCH TO THE END TO FIND OUT, ALSO REMEMBER TO LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, FOLLOW MY TWITTER, FACEBOOK INSTAGRAM, SNAPCHAT... you get the idea
@@l.democh8547 still around these numbers, and second this is bandwidth speed not write or read speed. Only SDD can achieve this speed as long I'm concerned.
Interestingly, I use that phrase again in my next-to-be-published video (due Friday), which is actually about a pudding, but now I have said too much...
The sad part is someone probably bought this, put files on it, thinking they were effectively backed up, and not realized that they were corrupting some of the earlier files they put on.
I bought two '1TB' usbs (amongst other stuff) from Wish when I was trying it out, for a buck a piece. I knew it was too good to be true, but curious anyway. As soon as I tried to put files on it, it became clear it was shit.
if it sounds too good to be true its not going to be real, i buy off wish and never had a item be fake or not as said and its very easy to your cash back.
This video is almost 3 years old, but it's about 2 weeks late for me. Bought a 2tb USB from Amazon, and although I've been ripped off before with random stuff (i.e. movie posters printed on plastic sheeting), I figured it was cheap enough to see if it was legit. I checked it out on my PC and even reformatted it in FAT32 so I could use it on my PS2, and everything seemed legit. So I copy all of my ISOs over and play one game - and come to think of it, it's the last game I put on there, so that's why it worked. But all of the other games give me fragmentation errors. And now I know why. Thank you.
It's even more insidious. Many of these have invisible hard-coded meta-trojans in them. These have been created by the Chinese government to collect data on western markets.
@@karadan100 well I'm not sure about the chinese gov in particular, but I definitely think that some kind of alibaba corporation would have been glad to have every kind of info on every possible user.
So I sent my buddy this video and many others explaining that he got scammed with a 1 TB stick for $15.. He's uh.. Too lazy to watch them and still puts stuff on there. lOsT sOuL.
@@alumlovescake No. They mean the same thing, its just most people dont use the word 'devoured' so people get the feeling that it has a stronger implementation.
That testing method is pretty ingenious! I would have let the batch script run without the video to see when the computer tells me the stick's run out of space, but I imagine it wouldn't have worked since it's obviously overwriting older files to store new ones. Nice work!
I don't think that's supposed to happen normally. I am almost sure it's only because the USB stick was showing more capacity than is really there, so I think the memory cells were looping enough times to show 2TB in the system. So, it would eventually run out once the cells run out of fake addresses.
What that email from Wish really meant was "yeah we do sell some dodgy stuff and you found out. Here's your money back, so don't tell anyone. Btw don't bother sending our crap back to us, we don't want that rubbish"
Wish are a cesspool of scammers. I saw a Strix 1080ti for £14, advert listed the whole spec list, had pictures of the card itself and I thought "it's got to be a scam, right?". For a laugh, I ordered one. A package arrived a few weeks later and what was inside? A plastic brush for cleaning your keyboard...a brush not even worth £1! However, on the plus side, it has become a running joke in the office now, "Can I use your Asus ROG Strix 1080ti to brush off my keyboard?" lol
I think Linus tech tips ordered a bunch of the graphics cards and got a similar result - apparently the scammers are typically altering the description after taking in a few sales so that it only says you are entering a raffle to possibly win a graphics card
@@AtomicShrimp I've seen that too, they can be very sneaky with their updates, which is like what they did in my case where they slipped in the word brush right at the end! Wish themselves are also equally unhelpful and just allow it, which is very sad. At least we didn't lose much :)
Aaron Hare It's also an old scam, a few fake drives that sounded realistic (like 1G sold as 4G) even made it into physical shops. With the early version of the scam there were some tricks to force a quicker failure, but actually writing unique data at full capacity, then reading it back is still the true test if the quick tests don't catch them.
@@babygirl8181980411 They have built their business on these scams. They should be vigilant to check if they're vendors are scamming. I mean they know, they just dont care because the scams bring in money. Wish is shit, dont give these people your money.
i purchased an obviously fake copy of Pokemon Saphire from Wish, then when it arrived i simply ask for a refund as the product was fake. and got a refund and a fake pokemon saphire game.
@Johnny Eyeball yeah i won't, i meant i was planning to buy a real copy i definitely don't want a fake copy lol, I'll just steer clear from the suspiciously cheap ones
Johnny Eyeball Learned that with one of my 72-in-one cartridges with Zoids Legacy and other such games, but hey at least it got me to buy the real one when I'd gone through 3 runs of the game and lost the save battery. And of course emulation where I have no such worry. Mother has recently bought me a DS cartridge of 204-in-one just because she saw two franchises I like on the first half of the game listing, I assume I should have the same worry despite the newer tech? I will say it doesn't sit in my 3DS properly unless I get it hard and specifically placed, but fits fine in my normal original DS. Just shows up in the menu as a Spongebob game, weirdly enough, I don't think that game is on the cart.
at Tymen Van Essen, I don't know which is worse, 1) Being admittedly happy that you got to keep the fake game or 2) That you publicly admit to buying something that has the word "Pokemon" in the title.
Those sticks usually have the firmware modified to display more storage. In some cases that can be reverted and you end up with a completely normal, smaller stick. They tend to use 4 or 8 GB sticks, which is still a bit expensive for 11 quid.
@@tomklein9937 Nope. No amount of reformatting will “fix things.” The spoofed controller chip will still cause the OS to show a supposed 2 TB capacity (which is fake, of course) when the drive is mounted.
That's right. Nothing you can do from the OS alone will correct the issue. It is necessary to reflash the firmware of the onboard controller. I think people mistakenly believe that the OS can see the actual storage on the device - it cannot - everything is mediated by the controller
I thought the same thing. Why people would take issue with someone exposing a false item is beyond me - even when it's obvious. Not everyone knows these things and I would think this is always good information to have.
Seems a mixed crowd. Some people are amused or angry that TH-cam is serving them ads for Wish alongside this video - others seem to think I stretched the test out longer than it needs to be in order to pad the video length (I never do that); some people think my fingers are weird (they are); some people seem convinced they really did buy a 2TB stick for next to no money. humans are weird.
@@AtomicShrimp Yes, I have noticed all the comments made specifically about your fingers. It seems there is a digit fetish out there. The things some people are drawn to can be quite strange.
@@absolutelybagel2218 they do? What are you talking about? if you have the packaging and the product then take a picture then take a photo of the card payment and they refund ALMOST EVERYTHING that you bought
@@absolutelybagel2218 Oh yes they do... even if the seller won't, the platform (wish in this case) will, unless the site itself is a scam like G2A. And you don't have to send it back.
@@magogus7099 If the seller rips you off by giving you a different item than what you paid for, G2A will not give you your money back. They offer 'purchase protection' for an extra fee but that still does not help. Because of G2A's complacency their site is full of scams. They do nothing about it because they are based in Hong Kong and thus out of reach of consumer protections. I have personal experience with G2A's scumminess and know others who do so as well.
The first time I was browsing Wish, the same thought of "this is too good to be true" repeatedly crossed my mind. I went ahead and ordered a few cheap items to see what it's all about, and here's what I learned. 1) A lot of vendors hide the important product information in novel-length (poorly written) article descriptions. Learned that the hard way: Ordered what I thought would be a complete set of brush pens, only to receive two random-colored ones. Not a scam per se, but of course one should call shenanigans on this sort of deceptive behavior. 2) Most of the electronics sold are garbage. Fortunately, you don't need to order electronics off Wish to come to that realization. There are a few genuine vendors who buy bulk electronics and sell them for cheap through Wish, but they are lost boats in an ocean of scrap electronics. 3) The items are usually much, much smaller than you imagine them to be judging by the pictures provided. A lot of vendors use pictures of small Asian women hands holding the items to create the illusion of size. 4) If an item is "free, just pay shipping", stay away. You're going to end up paying shipping costs and garbage removal costs because that is what you get: Junk, garbage, refuse that some guy found in an abandoned warehouse. 5) The article reviews are extremely generous (because you get partial coupons for each review) and should not be a factor in your decision of whether or not you want to order something. What I have learned in summary is this: If an article on Wish seems too cheap, it usually is. If it is reasonably priced, you can find the same item for either the same price or cheaper if you don't mind buying used. Plus, you don't have to worry about returns and customer service if you order anywhere else. Anyway, thanks to AtomicShrimp for taking one for the team, and thanks for reading my little exposé. (=
Isn't garbage disposal included in your taxes? I have had good experiences with Wish, BUT... here are the caveats: 1) Always check product information. A lot of vendors can use the same pictures between them, so you need to check the product information so that when you get the item you can hold the seller (and Wish) accountable. So if it says "Russian bride" make sure the product information lists the town she's from. If it doesn't then you might get one from Crimea, which technically is Russian soil, but not exactly what you wanted. And you can't really blame the seller, because you purchased a technically Russian bride. 2) Sizes: a lot I've browsed included size information. If it doesn't then stay away from it (and if size is an issue, that is). I've bought clothes from vendors giving detailed information about sizes. I bought a size bigger than I normally wear and it fitted perfectly. 3) Free, just shipping can be a good thing if you also checked the product information. Why? Because you don't pay customs/import taxes for what is free. 4) Avoid one line user reviews. Look for reviews with pictures. Most user reviews are 5 stars followed by "Arrived two weeks earlier. Haven't tried the product yet". Beyond useless. At least I use and check the item and try to give a more informative review. That it arrived two weeks earlier than expected is not a feat in itself. Whish just puts automatically one month shipping so they can cover their asses if an item takes more than two weeks. It's like people think China is some sort of magical land and they send their exports by carrier pigeons. 5) Don't rush to buy anything because it's "80% off - Almost out of stock". Sure, I really believe that Legend of Zelda hoodie is $100 and you're giving it for $10 out of the goodness of your heart. Or because you're insane - "Come down to Bill's Second Hand Cars, we have such huge discounts we've been literally diagnosed as being insane. Aaargghh the cars are spiders! Get them off me, get them off me!!!" So yeah, follow these rules and you'll find some decent stuff there. A lot of stuff in retail is just made in China with the company logo. Why not get the same thing at a third/half the price?
@@ZombieDragQueen "So yeah, follow these rules and you'll find some decent stuff there. A lot of stuff in retail is just made in China with the company logo. Why not get the same thing at a third/half the price?" See, all of the points you've made appear to be valid, but--and this is a big one--you are not getting the same product. Most of the stuff available on wish is, simply spoken, garbage. It's basically a site for either lazy or easily-addicted people where they can throw away their afternoons getting on top of "the best deals". Which would be fine if you were actually receiving a great deal. However, wish feeds off of a very basic human need to collect, evaluate, and then collect some more based on the evaluations made. Simply put, they are trying to trap you in a feedback loop: Receive *amazing* deals → purchase saving oh-so-much → feel good about yourself → receive coupons _immediately_ → receive *amazing* deals → make more purchases saving oh-so-much... You get what I'm driving at. Paired with all the coupons you get for doing the most mundane of tasks and daily-deal wheel (which has yet to reveal its unique qualities), you got yourself a honey pot of consumer goodness. Well, but that's not so bad, you say, because you get awesome deals. Well, maybe once you consider that 95% of those deals consist of right out scams, knock-offs, recycled-plastic garbage and, in particular, electronics that plainly were manipulated to be something they are simply not (see the esteemed video we are commenting under), the deals don't seem so great after all (more so, since you can easily find equal and better deals if you are willing to do the leg work. No, I am being serious. Of all the products I've ordered, there were an amazing zero of which I could not have gotten cheaper or for the same price used or from a local vendor.) As far as your refutations are concerned: 1) This is a moot point because there are no checks and balances in place to ensure a correct correlation between product and product information. I do believe that is the original point I was trying to make. 2) Sizes: I have never ordered clothing off wish. I was, however, talking about _product dimensions_. Do I really have to explain the difference between "clothing size" and "product dimensions"? 3) I have ordered 3 items exactly from the category "free, just pay shipping". They were either complete, absolute garbage or damaged beyond use. Tell me again how I can get a refund on free products? 4) Ah, yes, the user reviews... I did specifically not mention the "damn, received my bag of garbage one week earlier than initially assumed-5 stars"-reviews. Because, I don't know if it's due to an active supression of buyer's remorse, or whatever's at play, but most reviews are absolutely unwilling to *honestly report that they've been duped*. And, of course, they wouldn't be. Any review nets you coupons, after all. 5) Would be a valid point if the wish corp, or whatever their situation is, had any control over this. Vendors on wish can pretty much put whatever they want in their item descriptions and stock size and whatever. Wish is interested in selling as much shite as possible to as many people as possible because they receive a small cut off every purchase. Beyond that, they don't give a rat's ass about customer service, customer rights, or any of the many customer-protection laws established over the last 20 years. That being said, if you like wish and want to continue using their services, go for it. Please, buy as much of their products as you can, so we don't have to.
@@raptorjesus6120 - You make a valid point. Wish is like in app purchases in smartphone games. They prey on the few addicted, because most people will see right through the scheme. And that is something that each country (individual, but also the European Union or in case of North America the USA, Canada and Mexico). I agree with you on a lot of things and even I put these 2TB sticks on my wishlist and then did research on it because I'm not an idiot. There's a price discrepancy between a "real" product and the knock-off when considering purchasing. If somebody offers you a Rolex for $30 you'll ask them to fuck off, but if it's half the price of the real one, like $10000 or whatever it costs you'd listen to the seller, like "Basically a real Rolex, it just didn't make the cut because there's a scratch here on the bracelet". So it's the same product just without the warranty, but aesthetically, mechanically and functionally the same. Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of product description. Of all products I've purchased I haven't been able to find them cheaper (or at all) here. 1) There are but it depends on the country. Here in Sweden Wish made a deal with the postal office where they cover the tax on the product's price, shipping and handling fee. Unlike Aliexpress where you'd have to pay these taxes yourself. In practice the total amount would be pretty much the same since Wish raises product and shipping costs to cover those taxes. But at the same time the payment goes through a reputable Swedish payment service. So you're insured. Also the EU has strong consumer protection laws. So it would be easy to get my money back if I get cables made of copper when I ordered cables made of silver. Besides the vendors rarely want products back because they produce so much they don't want it. On a occasion (that was on Etsy though) I kept the product and they refunded me the whole amount for a product. 2) I've checked motherboards, watches, sex toys, they usually do include a picture with actual size in cm and inches. If it doesn't then as I said, stay away from it. 3) Have you tried to contact the vendor and Wish and get your shipment money back? The product page doesn't say "faulty garbage, pay us to send it to you". Just raise Hell with the vendor and Wish and they'll just refund you your money. Do what everyone does when talking to costumer support: scream and demand to talk to the supervisor and threaten to go on youtube and twitter and facebook and expose them. 5) Vendors on Wish have to adhere to Wish's rules. As I said, the vendors can be vague in the description of the product and the pictures, but it doesn't mean they are breaking Wish's rules or scamming the buyers. The buyer has to take some kind of responsibility as well. That being said, the system with coupons and discount wheel and all the bullshit should be better regulated so it doesn't look like a casino. I've maybe bought like 7 things from Wish, so I'm not a big spender. I always do my research and assume some responsibility.
i ordered 1tb WD 2.0 external hardrive from Online but it cannot copy all my files so i opened my device and I got 80gb hitachi 2.0 laptop Hdd and adapater.. .. the 1tb capacity is virtual
Imagine if it kept copying the 8mg files and the drive really did have 2tb and some guy from a foreign country just invented a chapter in media storage history.
The problem with these, is that people buy without knowing how much they're getting, put their important files and memories there. And just start losing them without understanding why
Because they don't know any better doesn't make them stupid a lots changed in a very short time. And has left a lot of people that are forced to use this stuff very vulnerable.
Wow. It really makes me want to sell things on wish.com. I could sell cruise ships for £4.99. You'll get a bit of metal from a cruise ship but it'll say Cruise Ship on the advert. Don't worry if it comes in a bag labelled "bits of metal". And if the occasional person does want their money back, we will do that. We don't even need the cruise ship returned to us. That's how nice we are.
In a weird way, the refund is the bit that annoys me the most. Their readiness to refund you with no return almost makes it seem like they expected to - that it might be a regular occurence with the products they feature. It could also be seen as a way to keep punters sweet and discourage them from posting bad feedback or reviews. They know they're selling lies and they attempt to keep selling lies with as few people as possible knowing it. But you did precisely the right thing here, IMO - letting people know just how much of a scam it is. Denying Wish a certain amount of customers when they see how dishonest the products are. (I've had a few unsatisfying experiences at a certain auction website recently. Does it show?) Edit: sorry, meant this as a general comment, not a response to Popejimbo. Oh well.
Can confirm. I bought a couple of these from Wish 2 years ago. Was a bit naive and tried transferring several Gigs of movies at once. Seemed to be taking forever so I left it overnight. The next morning I was getting that corrupt file message and after that none of the few files that did transfer would actually work. Total scam. Thanks for explaining how it works 👍
You don't even really need 2TB of removable storage. If you want, or need, just get a regular 2(or more)TB hard disk, and, while needing a 12v adapter, a SATA to USB, they are WAY cheaper than $1000. Edit: Fine! (so you can all stop whining) You can also use external SSDs. Happier?
you could get a external harddisk for less component and more portability or you could salvage laptop that have 2tb 2.5 HHD (if you are lucky to find one or buy one) and getting one of those 2.5inch HHD to usb, no need to have a 12v adapter

The reason the file had zeroes rather than data from your text file is probably along the lines of: when the data wrapped around to the start of the drive it would overwrite the file allocation table, meaning the file system looks in the wrong place on the drive for file contents.

So this does not surprise me at all
Social Spit unfortunately it's very very easy for Chinese manufacturers to do this, as well as enter fake branding, VID(vendor ID) and PID(product ID) numbers to make knockoffs seem real at first glance, and hopefully (for them anyway) long enough for buyer protection on eBay, Alibaba, AliExpress, etc. to run out before someone puts enough files on them and realizes their old files are just being corrupted or overwritten to keep up the appearance that it still has plenty of space left -_-
I can imagine how highly annoying this would be, especially if you're like me and just push all photos and large files to external storage.

Thank you.

Yup. Completely agree with your summary of the site.
I'm rather annoyed by Wish... its just china eBay packaged for "masses" and they don't even take care of fraudulent stuff.
Isn't garbage disposal included in your taxes? I have had good experiences with Wish, BUT... here are the caveats:
1) Always check product information.
Get them off me, get them off me!!!"
So yeah, follow these rules and you'll find some decent stuff there. A lot of stuff in retail is just made in China with the company logo. Why not get the same thing at a third/half the price?
@@ZombieDragQueen
"So yeah, follow these rules and you'll find some decent stuff there. A lot of stuff in retail is just made in China with the company logo. Why not get the same thing at a third/half the price?"
See, all of the points you've made appear to be valid, but--and this is a big one--you are not getting the same product.
Of all the products I've ordered, there were an amazing zero of which I could not have gotten cheaper or for the same price used or from a local vendor.)
As far as your refutations are concerned:
1) This is a moot point because there are no checks and balances in place to ensure a correct correlation between product and product information.

Lol
Sell towel sculptures for a cool twenty bucks, send out a dollar towel and have 'some assembly required' somewhere in tiny print.
Ye
How about the pyramids for 3 pound, just sell mini versions like keychains
I thought that it might have been at least an 8GB for that price. A bloody single gig? Those cheeky sods!
Yeah, but if you think about it - if you set out to lie about the product's capabilities, why not make it the cheapest possible lie?
Does it show?)
Edit: sorry, meant this as a general comment, not a response to Popejimbo. Oh well.
@AtomicShrimp Fair point. It made for an interesting video anyway, so swings and roundabouts I guess.
@Warren JB Lol, no worries.
Warren JB agreed - they did not seem surprised about it at all. My negative review of the product was never published either
Happier?
you could get a external harddisk for less component and more portability
or you could salvage laptop that have 2tb 2.5 HHD (if you are lucky to find one or buy one) and getting one of those 2.5inch HHD to usb, no need to have a 12v adapter

NVME is PCIe based (which would only make sense if hooked up to Thunderbolt which is PCIe compatible), AHCI is S-ATA protocol based (which needs a simple USB conversion chip from S-ATA to USB).
And maybe you should notice that USB 3.1 Gen 1 can easily perform tasks that are consistant for more than 50 MB/s transfered? And you still can hookup an SSD in a 2,5" case and have like internal speeds...
i dont remember my salvaged HHD or external hard drive having only 2mb of transfer rate

Why place a smaller point of entrance for a device when it can be larger, as in the case of a disk entrance? real capacity: 512 MB
advertised capacity: 2 TB
I see the same sorts of things on devices that have a camera element in them (microscopes and webcams, for example) - a lot of them have a very poor sensor and use (pointless) interpolation to inflate the images to a larger size - some of the manufacturers of better quality devices felt the need to stress that their equipment was 'real 2 megapixels' - but then the people selling the cheap garbage just copied that claim.
i still dont understand people who use wish, anything you find on there (with a stolen real image or a fake image of the product) always has some shitty grandmas comment about her grandson enjoying it or it broke

OMG this is the first time a TH-camr has like a comment of mine! I'm so petty sorry. I'll go now.
The reason the file had zeroes rather than data from your text file is probably along the lines of: when the data wrapped around to the start of the drive it would overwrite the file allocation table, meaning the file system looks in the wrong place on the drive for file contents.
Consumer awareness for the win
If at the description of the item they feel it's necessary to tell you, "This item is perfect!!!!" (or prefect in this case), that should also already be a warning sign that it's a scam.
