    Hi all, we'd like to apologise for not being able to demonstrate the RAW files. We did mention we would do this in the video. At the time of shooting Adobe Camera Raw did not support the .NRW files produced by the camera and we were unable to process them in Lightroom. This appears to still be the case. We will aim to be aware of this for future releases. Thank you for your support. Please visit our website for all of your photographic needs: www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/

      Hi, for that issue you can use Adobe DNG Converter (software) to create and "standard" RAW file (.dng) and edited later on adobe camera raw. Saludos

      Nikon provides its own excellent RAW handler. A bit of a learning curve to an Adobe user, but once mastered is as good as the Adobe stuff.

    Nice review - thanks, mate! Nikon is close to producing the perfect all-in-one camera. They just need three things:
    1) Make it full-frame
    2) Make it constant aperture f/2.8 or better yet f/1.4.
    3) Provide a van to pickup the cash required for that and for us to carry the camera around in.
    Until then, the P1000 is fine piece of kit.

    • @AleksHugs
      @AleksHugs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If they make it full frame the focal length would be reduced to around 550mm instead of 3000mm. This camera’s insane zoom capabilities come from a brilliant exploitation of the crop factors from a smaller sensor.

      Also keep in mind i was had p900 , and I overused it for 4 hour non-stop zoom in and out , then the rotor on the camera Overheat .
      Tried send it to the dealer , but they dont sell parts for it , and even you cannibal the full Lens from other camera, somehow the camera reject it
      So do mind it dont zoom in and out without giving it rest
      So yeah my camera still broken , no way to fix it , 2 years usage

    Seriously, no doubt, by far the most informative, comprehensive (within time limits), objective review I've seen. Thank you very much! I am dying to get this camera after having the p900. It seems that there are only 3 downfalls which are no touchscreen, weight and battery life. (understanding that it's not a 35mm). I imagine with battery tech improving soon that there will be a replacement battery that rocks. Thanks you very much. Please review the RAW imaging/editing that you mentioned. Thanks again!

    Cracking review: made even better by the fact that I know Cheltenham well. Thanks a lot. My one observation is that it's only a full frame equivalent of a 24 - 3000mm lens. I have been considering purchasing a P1000 for the days when I don't want to take out my A7III/A7II. Though bulky, it appears extremely versatile.

    A great review. I know it will not measure up to my DSLR and a Nikkor 200-500 lens but the reduced weight and the greater reach makes up for it. Trying it tomorrow and hopefully buying it tomorrow. A good addition to my kit.

    hi Sir .. tQ for sharing your review.
    all my years of amateur photography, any camera that i hold, its focal length must wide at least 28mm(35mm cam equivalent) max maybe 120mm is suffice for me.
    Then one day i stumbled upon TH-cam video on lumix TZ70 and i went wild, got myself a preloved TZ80.
    And now, comes the Nikon P1000!! i didn't even knee P900 existed.
    Min 8:00 sealed the deal for me, selling some redundant cameras at home and sure am getting one P1000 Sir!!
    p/s i like too your kind comment on the matter of 'atmospheric' conditions between the P1000 and the subject @3000mm focal length away..

  • @ejdalise

    You mentioned the RAW editing you were planning to evaluate. That's one thing I'm curious about and have not seen addressed in other reviews. The small sensor would seem to make RAw a feature of limited benefit and use. Thanks.

    • @TheRicheg
      @TheRicheg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      raw just means an unprocessed sensor data save possibly at 16bit depth? and in adobe red green blue so yeah still better than jpeg if editing

    • @ejdalise
      @ejdalise 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheRicheg
      Hmm . . . yes and no. I just downloaded some P1000 RAW files from one of the sites that reviewed the P1000 (you can download both the JPG and the RAW file but you need Nikon's software to read the RAW file because PS and LR can't yet read the new format).
      As far as I can tell, there's not much (if any) advantage to the RAW file versus the JPG which is one of the problems with small sensors.
      That said, the sample size is small and that's why I'd be interested in hearing from someone who shoots RAW all the time. From what little I've seen, I'm not sure I'd shoot RAW with this camera. Then again, RAW comes into play more during difficult shooting situations.
      I'll probably rent the P1000 before deciding if I should buy it. That's because of the size change and extra price. I own a P900 and I'd preferred they'd given us an actual upgrade instead of a new camera with more unknowns. Also, few people tell you the settings when they shoot and those can vary significantly depending on personal preferences.

    Thank you for doing this review, i will have mine in a few hours from now, I am booked to go on a Whale watching trip this weekend and so tempted to take this camera with me, a little bit worried about the sea water element so if you think i should not take it then tell me today.I had the P900 and had so much fun with it, this new beast certainly goes to another level. Weather permitting i will be taking shots of some Peregrine falcons around teatime, the P900 performed very well with this so i am excited to get even better pictures and footage of my little friends on York Minster. Once again Thanks for a great review.

    • @clifton-cameras
      @clifton-cameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi Andy, this camera has a fluorine coating on the lens to repel moisture and protect the exposed glass element from dust. If I was you I would take the camera without hesitation, what is an adventure camera for if not being taken on adventures? Just be careful in your use of it. The body isn't the most robust I have seen, nor is it weather sealed. A good option to protect the front lens element is to use a protective filter; this could be either a UV, clear or polarizer. This will protect it from moisture, dirt and even slight impacts. It's always a good idea to have a filter handy for challenging environments and you'll be pleasantly surprised what a good polarizer can do when shooting water on a bright day. It will minimize reflections and even help you penetrate the surface to some degree.

      Hi Allen, we are conscious of this, unfortunately, our Lightroom subscription lapsed right after this video was made and we never got around to it. If you're interested you can email me at m.ward@cliftoncameras.co.uk and I'll send you a couple files once I've managed to play with them some more. This may be a couple weeks out though given Photokina is next week, we have found ourselves very busy. I apologise for not following through in the video. I think it's fair to say that I'm not expecting big things due to the small sensor size in conjunction with the outrageous equivalent focal lengths. For the hobbyist, however, the added flexibility that RAW provides should be a welcome addition regardless of the degree to which it works as it wasn't present on the P900. In that respect, this is an improvment on the previous iteration. Thank you for your input!

    • @MegaElectriceel
      @MegaElectriceel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LR doesn't recognize NRW raw format. Nikon's NX-D will read the file and you can than pass it to your favorite PP platform in tiff. Nikon does have an available codec for download which will allow Win10 to recognize the nrw format. Even so a program like ON1 will display a colorcast image and have terrible distortion. (they are aware of problem however P1000 is not a "Tier 1" camera so it might be awhile for its support.) I suspet that might be true for adobe support as well.

  • @yizhakshachar
    @yizhakshachar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    best P1000 review I have seen so far, I gave you a "LIKE". but there are few Issues I wanted to mention
    1. When you zoom in video mode, you should mention vocally how much zoom you are doing so we know what you are doing
    2. when you video yourself at 13:30 you had big shadow on yourself which made your face dark, you should check position of sun when you shoot or use back light compensation +1
    3. Please bear in mind that there are two kind of digital zoom. The dynamic fine zoom in still mode does not effect the quality of the picture but only reduces size of picture lit. 2x (6,000mm) dynamic fine zoom would reduce 16MP picture into 4MP picture because it crops out 75% of picture to get a virtual zoom. The regular digital zoom would leave 16MP picture the same but quality would go down since pixels are getting bigger.
    4. since it's a travelers camera, it bothers me that it does not have GPS feature. I wonder if the Nikon GP-N100 GPS receiver would work on the Nikon P1000 hot shoe.

    Once upon a time during the days of true analogue photography iso wasn't a concern. You would balance the aperture with the shutter speed to get a required exposure, depending on the lighting conditions. The trouble with that though is it would take some effort and time also you'd need a tripod to carry which would be even more effort. Now because exposure levels are all calculated automatically iso becomes the deciding factor for the user. And wether or not you want to carry a tripod around which goes against the modern trend of that's too much effort. You can't have your cake and eat it. Unless your gonna carry it around with you

    Try to see the curve of the earth. It's 8 inches per mile squared. So if object is 12 miles away it will be 144 times 8 inches. 96 (of it's own) feet below eye level horizontal. You Should be able to easily see that with that camera.

    • @adamstruthjourney1226
      @adamstruthjourney1226 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just get somewhere you can see an object that is 12 miles away and is the same elevation as you and you should notice it is 96 feet below your eye level horizon which would prove the earth is not flat.

    • @my3dviews
      @my3dviews 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      8 inches per mile squared is the formula for a parabola not a sphere. It is a close approximation over short distances but is not the most accurate way to calculate the hidden height behind the horizon.
      A good place to view the effects of curvature is when looking at Toronto from across Lake Ontario. I have seen it myself and only the tops of the buildings were visible. Like this:
      upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/33/Toronto_seen_across_lake_Ontario_from_Olcott_2.JPG
      Not sure why you say "eye level horizon", since the horizon is actually bellow eye level (but only slightly) when near the surface.

    It's definitely am interesting camera , and an amazing focal length. But sadly another camera that no camera manufactur will put a proper sensor in, because as soon as you give a camera like this image quality it negates the need for all the other costly equipment they all sell . I've been using a cannon sx50 for several years which has the same limitations, but is great for wildlife and getting that long reach as long as you except that image quality us below par. Shooting far away with is amazing. Low light from a 1 2/3 is going to be poor. If they used a 1 inch sensor it would have reduced the focal reach. But low light would be better. Imagine if it started at F2.0 to F4.0? 3000mm is crazy in one camera in bright light. I so much want to try this in nature shots and the trail. This camera is going to be heavy too, but still lighter than a mirrorless or DSLR if you could even match the focal length. If I had this I would be investing in a shoulder neck strap. So for birds, some airplane spotting, and shooting the Moon of course. Otherwise this is a 1000 dollars for me could be spent better elsewhere. Save a bit more and get the Sony RX-10 IV, still get 600mm, excellent 4K UHD video. Superior focus and image quality. 1 inch sensor vs. 1 2/3 the P1000 has some merits but it is so extreme so that it attracts and detracts. For video wide angle is not going to be so good, but zoom is where it is at. Good effort on a camera with limited appeal. It is too situational for my $1000.00.

    • @MrPetebuster1
      @MrPetebuster1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it was a one inch sensor you'd be looking at least double the price, its all about the zoom, nothing comes close. It's all about trade offs, that's why most have more than 1 camera, but this should be fun to use. Even the rx10 iv has its limitations. More depends on what you shoot than the camera.

    I realize this video is three years old, but was wondering if you could tell what tripod that you used. I’ve read it can be tricky on a tripod due to where the tripod mount is located and the weight from lens when it’s extended to the max! Great review! Thank you!

    The 1 thing somebody might use this camera for is observing the night sky for stars & planets as an alternative to more expensive telescopes.
    The bottom-line is that people are using their phones & tablets as portable alternatives to expensive cameras. Once people need to print their photos to see the images, now only professionals would have their photos in print so the consumers at the low-end can get away with having high quality images. Unless a camera more than what people can do on a phone, they're not going to carry one anywhere even for family gatherings.

    Question, have they removed the EV limitation ?, on the old P900 you could set 30 seconds at ISO-100, if the ISO was changed to ISO-200 for example then the max shutter speed you could set would be 15 seconds and so on, this crippled it for any decent night sky shots. can the P1000 be set to ISO-3200, and 30 sec (or even bulb) when in manual mode ?

    • @MovieVertigo
      @MovieVertigo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, unfortunately not. Similar restrictions. Bulb only seems available in ISO 100

    • @MovieVertigo
      @MovieVertigo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Another Faze He's talking about the fact that as you increase the ISO, the camera firmware artificially limits the maximum exposure time in manual mode. This severely reduces its ability to capture deep-sky objects and star-trail time-lapses capture far fewer stars.

      Im looking since over a year for a 2nd hand P950 or Sony RX10 Mk3/Mk4, none found yet. Im pretty happy with a modern DSLM and a ton of lenses but i would really enjoy a compact superzoom bridge camera as well, but not for that high price, im willing to pay maximum 300$ in good condition since especially the Nikons are very useless in image quality and low light, the Sony RX10 is somewhat capable, low light as well image quality.

    Wonderful review, I really wanted to buy this camera although now I'm in the middle. I came across G7 Lumix. Which is almost half cost of Nikon Coolpix p1000. What would you recommend for me, I'm open to different makes too. My use would be taking pictures and recording movies at night(horror type movie, so very dark). Thank you so much for your time.

    Hi Clifton. I've just purchased one but know little about its use at the moment. I would like to know how to set it on auto focus so that when I aim at a subject it auto focuses on it. Also, does this camera do Macro zoom to a very close up on small insects?

      I have the P900 on which the macro works the same. I do a lot of macro pictures with it on insects and small wild flowers. It works perfect for that.
      Your question was a while back so I assume you already figured that out by yourself. Right?

    When you lowered the iso you didn't compensate for exposure. What's the point of the test?
    You even said "it's getting darker and darker of course"...
    That's where I stopped watching.

    • @davidlewis1787
      @davidlewis1787 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      halfniak because if you lift the shadows in raw to match exposure you can quickly ascertain noise levels and how many stops you can recover and get usable results ...obviously it’s not real world but if you can see that you can get 2 stops without impacting quality you can keep that in mind when using exposure compensation when exposing to preserve highlights

    Good work. Not to be rude, but. Don't understand why the music has to be turned up that much. It's as if the music is the most important part of the video. Sorry but I had to turn down the volume every time you stopped talking and increased the volume of the music and it's what you said that was the interesting part. But again. Good work. I'm not really sure if I want the camera. The camera you used for making this video has a better video quality. Would like to know if anybody could tell if there's an affordable and recommendable dedicated 4K video camera that's got a heavy zoom on the market. By the way. I agree with Dena Michele.

    If you don't want to be obvious taking street shots, use the screen and hold it waist high at closer range. People don't think you're taking pics when you're looking down. What attachment are you using? Is that a tripod?

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The camera does not have a “half inch” sensor. It has a 1/2.3 sensor (pronounced one-over-two-point-three) and would be more correctly called a two thirds sensor although that is not normally used as a name. It is 6.16mm x 4.62mm in size. The 1/2.3 name comes from the vacuum tube days and means it is a 2.3 size designed to go in a 1 inch tube. The “1” only ever refers to the size of the tube, not the sensor size. Even a so-called 1 inch sensor is not actually 1 inch in size, but it was the largest size that would fit inside a 1 inch tube with enough room for its bezel area, and is 13.2mm x 8.8mm which is way smaller than an inch. Marketing people like to use the 1 inch name, however, because it makes the sensor sound like it is a lot bigger than it really is.

      wrote: "(pronounced one-over-two-point-three) and would be more correctly called a two thirds sensor"
      What do you call the 2/3-inch sensor that measures 8.8mm x 6.6mm? Would you call that a two-over-three sensor? Because to me it would be way easier to call it two-thirds.
      Edit: (Not that anyone really has a f to give about all this pedantic blather.) Me go now. Head hurt from write.....

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      rapskallion The decimal refers to a second fraction, but with the vagaries of over 50 years of vacuum tube usage means that there are often illogical naming conventions that are not consistent. Also, because the sensors for a particular size were made by different manufacturers the actual mm dimensions of individual sensors with the same “size” would vary. Sadly, when the switch to CCD sensors happened there was an opportunity to rationalize the sizing conventions, but it appears that camera manufacturers preferred to continue the old confusion because they wanted to convince users that they had bigger sensors than they actually had. I didn’t mean that 1/2.3 should be called two thirds, just that half inch is not correct, and it would be more correct to say 2 thirds if you were going to (incorrectly) use a fraction. Yes I know that it is mostly engineers who think about these things, but I do wish we could convince manufacturers to just use mm dimensions and get rid of this confusing vacuum tube nonsense.
