- Yep, you read that title correctly. Nikon Australia dropped by and gave us a Nikon P1000 to test out. Oh and did we mention it has a 28-3000mm zoom lens?

one thing thats seemed so overlooked and so underestimated is that it does raw photos now. thats crucial for astrophotography. i have the p900 and when i take moon pics with a cool foreground, and i cant get the lighting right to have the right exposure for the moon and trees/buildings etc., even in lightroom... since its all jpeg. But now with raw, the p1000 can get waaay more creative. Huge feature.

You should better show the camera and image quality but not yourself!
It shoots RAW , a better than p900 , but i dont know about the sensor tho
Also keep in mind i was had p900 , and I overused it for 4 hour non-stop zoom in and out , then the rotor on the camera Overheat .
Tried send it to the dealer , but they dont sell parts for it , and even you cannibal the full Lens from other camera, somehow the camera reject it
So do mind it dont zoom in and out without giving it rest
So yeah , my camera still broke , 2 years usage

Great video. What does the P1000 have in the timelapse settings, any more than the 5 settings on the 900? Also, does it have a bulb setting?

I’ve got the P900 and for the price it is an awesome camera for what it’s designed for. My biggest gripes with the P900 were firstly the autofocus with fading light, it’s really poor. This is compounded by a dismal manual focus system. Secondly it didn’t shoot RAW.
The P1000 has addressed the RAW issue but I think it’s using the same autofocus and manual focus system. Having said that I think I’ll be purchasing.
It looks like a spaceship out of Star Trek or something!
Hi, Would be happy to post some pictures of Mars but when pointing to Mars, I cannot figure out how to see the planet features and then make a precise focusing because what I can see is only a very bright dot ! Is there a way to have the liveview much darker when shortening exposures in manual mode ?
Note : changing the exposure value has no effect on liveview. In the Menu I asked for visualisation to reflect exposition but to no avail...

World Insight - Update: I returned the behemoth P1000 and purchased the Sony RX10 IV. While I miss the 3000mm zoom, it was a good swap.
I love the P900, very versatile and the image quality is remarkable for what it is, I saw that the P1000 is on pre order at the local camera shop at £1000, the P900 is only £550.
P900 is a good camera; if only it had raw support like P1000.
@Ohh Moinsss For what it is. It has good image quality. You will get the shot with the P900 that you wouldn't get otherwise. You will get a far superior image with your 5D MK4 if you use a 70-200 and a 2x teleconverter maybe, but you will only have 400mm. The lens alone is twice the price of the P900. You have missed the shot the time it takes fitting it all together. The grain only shows in the bokeh. Etc.

Hey there. It would help to get the facts and advantages/disadvantages in a simply list and overview. Now I watch that and I still don't know, if I should buy it :-) Could you give me an advise if I should take the P900 or P1000 from Nikon or are there other same cameras from SONY, Panasonic, etc. for a lower price witch are better and recommanded? I want a good image quality, manual focus possibility, video isn't important (for that I take a Video Camera) and well a good possible zoom for makro close up picutres. Any tipp?

Can you point the flash up? To bounce the light from the ceiling indoors? And is the lens hood actually included?
Yeah, indoors. I use the trick on my Sony a6000 and it works just fine. What's so funny about that? I guess you simply have no idea what I am talking about, right? :-D
Using some sort of white card to bounce the flash to the ceiling ...

What is the widest aperture possible from 24mm to 3000mm at each point in the zoom memory setting? ie: 24, 28, 35, 50, 85, 105, 135, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, ?, ?, ?, ?, 3000. Mainly curious when does it hit f/5.6 and then f/8. Thanks.

In BULB or TIME mode when doing long exposures say 30 seconds it seems that you cannot avoid the rightaway same long exposure done for noise reduction ... After a 30s exposure you have to wait another 30s before the camera is again available :( To be improved in next firmware !
Imagine if they painted the inner barrel with red color, that would be epic while zooming in and out;)
Is the HDMI out put "live"? Can it be connected to a monitor whilst filming?
As a storm chaser I'm looking for a high-end point and shoot something that I could grab very easily quickly get my shot and get back in the car about 75% of what I shoot is video do you think this would be a good camera for me if not do you have a better suggestion

I have an old d3000 and I am looking for an upgrade. For someone that is looking good travel camara , shooting wildlife and surf do you think I should buy a D7200 with a Tamron 18-400mm or the p1000? (Price range similar)
You will get better image quality with the D7200. The sensor on the p1000 is smaller than the main camera sensor on a iPhone 7 Plus. Which also means it may not even do as well in low light situations as your D3000. Plus you'll still be able to use the lenses you have for your D3000.
If I wanted to shoot action shots like at a football game, what is the Frames Per Second ? Is there any sample action photos I can view?

For the new I like for shooting the Moon, but other than that I am not that excited about it as it will be limiting with that 1 2/3 sensor especially in low light. For daylight nature shots and tripod mount applications it would be fine. Focus engine since it is Contrast detect only, don't expect miracles. The EVF is meh. They had to keep the cost and weight down, hence the slower F stop near the end of its focal length. For me, save up, and get the Sony RX-10 IV and video with 4K UHD have mic/headphone ports, superior focus engine, and better EVF, and a more practical Zoom range. 600mm is plenty for most. Also the 1 inch BSI sensor will be better than the Nikon 1 2/3 Sensor. If you do get this camera, use your options for a more comfortable sling strap option.
They should make a camera with this lens of the p1000 and a full frame sensor.
Thanks for the review. I agree with most of your points. I still love my P900 though, it's not too big, quite lightweight considering the optics and not too expensive (bought for around 500$) - in case of damage and need to replacement is not a big problem.
In my humble opinion P1000 is not worth the money and not worth switching from P900 at all. Even if it was the same price as P900 I'm not sure I would decide to use it on daily bases. Just because of the size, battery usage and weight. A bit of extra zoom, and manual focus ring is not worth this huge size. If it was 4000mm not 3000mm. Yes - this size would make sense without a doubts.
I agree it's a very good idea for previous DSLR users. For them it's much more comfortable to use than DSLR cameras. But not for B700 or P900 owners.
There is one really good thing P1000 is much better than P900 or B700. For those who are losing hardware quite often - P1000 would be a benefit. It's hard to lose something as big as this camera. Easy to spot from a long distance and no problem to notice lack of weight in your backpack :)
In the meanwhile let's wait few years for another model to switch to. I will stick with P900 for a while. It's still amazing and quite a compact size one, even though it's already a bit too big and unhandy in some situations. P1000 in comparison looks more like a tripod, stationary version :)

I've just posted up the omission of the most important upgrade. The P1000 shoots raw files....
I have the P900 but i do tend to not use the digital zoom as there is too much distortion tripod or no tripod but the optical zoom is magnificent in sharpness.
I will however in the coming months buy the P1000 i now it's not as sharp as my D610 D5600 but it is a great long distance shooter.

I have p900 I dont think high zoom camera will perform good in unstable boat because its focusing engine isnt that fast . when i am using 2000 mm in p900 a slight movement can make the image blur. ok if you are in big ship and use tripod
Probably needed a gimbal stabilizers like DJI Ronin S or Zhiyun Crane 2...

It was pretty noticeable at times but expected for this type of camera.

Please, could you provide asap some real movie showing it and how much there is in normal conditions ? by "normal" I mean not moving the camera rapidly left and right to make it obvious but in nature hand held use, full zoom in, like when filming a far away animal, hand held, just trying to keep the camera steady ... This is one of my most important criteria to order the P1000 or not because I had very nice wild animal captures with the Fuji HS10 ruined by this problem when the camera was not on a tripod :(

Example the intervalometer is limited by steps of 30s ! Taking Moon picture, 10 or even 5 s would be much more suitable ...

2 videos of bumblebee on lavender, in HFR slow motion (120 fps in 640 x 480, really too bad IMHO there are no faster FPS mode - but I have to say very good quality !)
NOTE : I used a 67mm diam lens (not achromatic BTW), 4 dioptries, to do those macros the camera being not at a couple of cm from the object but using strong zoom at about 80 cm !! The P1000 was on tripod.
The empty moments (I started each movie a few seconds before the bumblebees reached the lavender) in the 2 videos have been deleted ...

I got the p900 a few months ago and used it maybe 4 times. It was cool to be able to zoom so far into things, but the quality and features was pretty bad compared to my 7 year old DSLR, so now I'm trying to sell it.

Question, have they removed the EV limitation ?, on the old P900 you could set 30 seconds at ISO-100, if the ISO was changed to ISO-200 for example then the max shutter speed you could set would be 15 seconds and so on, this crippled it for any decent night sky shots. can the P1000 be set to ISO-3200, and 30 sec (or even bulb) when in manual mode ?

That 3000mm is getting the DoF of a full frame 105mm f4 rn, who even needs big sensors, just shoot from the otherside of town. 😂

7:18 yeah similar issue with my Fujifilm finepix S9200 it tends to drift which I find little frustrating,
Using a Cannon EOS 2000D DSLR for less than week now and only have two lenses with it standard and zoom lens with filters.
I do like the zoom lens on that Nikon. I taken few okay good pictures of the moon with zoom plus digital zoom on tripod a few steady ones handheld with lunar pictures during the daytime.
8:38 remember the camera isn't DSLR so no manual option the servo motors for the lens and zoom lens are using up voltage and the LCD screen back-light using up voltage so there's your answer plus if using the flash its going to use up bit more voltage.
£1 grand or £999.99 is £1 grand.

But really needs for me is a comprehensive range of jpeg and raw images.

Just so you know, a "mil" is an Imperial unit of measurement equal to 1/1000 inch. It's not metric, and not related to the millimeter.

You seem to omit the most important upgrade. It shoots RAW files, something the P900 was sadly lacking.....
