      I agree with you 100% DBT is a very new type of therapy I think some schools are offering it. I know some prisons have their own form of it. I recently started Doing DBT at Columbia in NYC and i love it!

      I couldn’t agree more! School mainly prepares us for a cut throat civilization of competition, but doesn’t do much to help us relate to each other in a healthy way.

    DEAR MAN really helps me actually!! it seems to be reallt effective because it stops me from getting angry and snapping at someone

    • @OfftoShambala
      @OfftoShambala 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kishigod looking back at my life, now at age fifty... I wish I would have gotten snappy... sure responding in the balanced ‘assertive’ way is good for most situations, but a lot of people or situations require ‘snappy’ to have an effect... and violence is also needed... especially for kids... if a kid is bullying and stalking another kid... if the kid being stalked punches the bully... it will get the bully to stop in most cases... I have done it twice and not sure, but there are examples on TH-cam where kids have had enough of being taunted and they whomp on the bully and the problem is solved... all this self control and win win stuff is great, esp. in marriage, family, biz partners etc... important skill... but don’t ever feel bad for getting snappy under some situations with some people... sometimes snappy is just what the situation calls for.

      Kati Morton could you do a video on how to deal with friendship fall outs. My friend and I are more like family we have known each other since we were 3 years old (I'm currently almost 15) she had lots going on in her life and I supported her through very hard times and over the past few months she's been treating me horribly I have done nothing to hurt her in any way and I feel like her anger is being taken out on me. How can I move past this and not keep making myself feel guilty for her struggles when they have nothing to do with me?

    I'm a firm believer in DBT.
    Decades of inner healing n most psychological industry never suggested anything regarding HOW to work w that inner critic of someone else's abusive introjects.
    I've used DBT n CBT over a year and after 50 years of chronic abuse, I'm finally feeling my beautiful me without the abusers voice/thoughts in my brain.
    We should all advocate that our educational system teaches this and have better standards as educators.

    I'm a person who doesn't notice that someone has crossed my boundaries til it's happened a couple of times with a few other ppl and when another person repeats the pattern one time, I go off because it's not that person, it's been several ppl that allowed to repeat the same pattern.I can be sensitive and can be easy going at times but if my anxiety or stress level is up-its on.

    I TOTALLY ADMIRE YOU. SO GOOD. I just realized that I have a severe borderline syndrome (since around I was 13, now I am 45) and that I have been / almost still am / but not really together with a man who has a total and clear NPD (narcissist). Oh my god, our kids are challenged full on for sure! I have tried psychotherapy before but for other reasons, and it always failed. Now I want to try it again with the type of it you have suggested. It is never too late, I am soooo tired of my life constantly being on the verge of collapse.

    I did CBT the last year, not DBT, but in my sessions we talked about using I statements, mindfulness, and using assertive language. I found it especially helpful when I decided to get in contact with my aunt after a falling out. I've also been using these new skills in my everyday life, not just possibly uncomfortable encounters. This Dear Man sounds like another tool I can use when I'm not feeling so certain about a situation I want to be assertive in. when your mind might be going all over the place, it breaks it down into an easy way to remember. Thanks Kati!

    I learned DEAR MAN in a DBT group in ED residential. It made a lot of sense and was super helpful, but was so much easier in a safe group environment than in the real world! I needed this refresher though, I miss being able to do DBT weekly so much but it costs too much here now :(

    • @AllTaxisRYellow

      Right. It doesn’t work in the real world.

    • @scottdecarlo815
      @scottdecarlo815 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AllTaxisRYellow It doesn’t work because the process is flawed? It doesn’t work because people don’t respond well to it? It doesn’t work because…why?
      DEAR MAN isn’t a magic spell. If it doesn’t work with a certain person then it’s time to set boundaries with that person.

    I have worked with people that use this technique and all it appears to do is put a mask on their inner hateful feelings. Everything you said is true and many people without a personality disorder will find it useful. However, when i speak with someone that is using this and has a PD, the sense of them trying to control me, usually to do something mean on their behalf to another person that disobeyed them, really comes through. The torrent of rage still shines through. Thanks for the video.

    They videos are really helpful! Just wanted to float the idea that all things are 'social facts' and down to perspective. So an example here is that actually describing a person cancelling as 'flaking out' is a judgement. Sticking to 'the fact's would be to just descibe the behaviour as something like: 'You have cancelled our plans an hour beforehand 3 times', say. Many thanks for these helpful videos!

      Yes, for me, there’s also a balance between verbal and non-verbal communication, and matching levels of motion. One can say they are not assertive or aggressive while throwing hands about creates stress. And there is a good opportunity to discuss patience and balancing communications within the context of negotiations.

    I took dbt and a little something I want to add is that it's not always step by step process through the letters of dear man in order. Conversations can often be quite messy.
    Also, you did not fail if someone refuses to co-operate or act respectfully. Be kind to yourself, and reflect on how things went and could be done differently.

      It makes me feel stupid and I know my actual potentials with out it. And the thing that made me say "stupid" because there's no therapists where I live, only psychiatrists which makes asking for help useless because there's no help simply and that makes bpd stupid ugly rude disorder. Bpd is unfair but when you don't have any access to therapy its unfairness is more than usual. I really try so hard not to think about it too much but because of your reply.
      Actually it's stupid because if you suffer because of things AND then you get bpd too???? Why both whyyyyy

    #KatiFAQ I have three questions
    1. What can you do if you don't feel ready for therapy, can you heal from sexual abuse on your own with The Courage to Heal workbook?
    2. If not, do you recommend seeing your Dr. first, before reaching out to a therapist? As I'm really struggling.
    3. Can you do a video on the Fight or Flight response, and coping strategies?

  • @PavelBrabec

    Interesting. I am not familiar with DBT, but this is really similar to NVC (Nonviolent Communication). 'Describe' is NVC 'Observation', 'Express' is NVC 'Feelings' and 'Needs' - "I feel ... because I need/value ..." And Assert is equal to NVC 'Requests'.

    Hi Kati, I've been watching your videos for the past few weeks and I've been going through your past and present videos and for starters can I just say how amazing you are and how helpful all your videos are. I know you've mentionned this before but I'm now in the position where I'm really struggling with regards to my mental health. I've been like this for a while now but I can't push myself to tell my parents or go and see a GP about it. I'd rather go to a GP than discuss this with my parents but I just wondered as to whether you have any suggestions on how to persuade yourself to overcome this fear and to stop me becoming so anxious about the whole thing so I can try and push for the help I think need? Thanks again for all your videos Kati, they help so so much and you're such an amazing and lovely person for doing this channel to help so many people xx

    • @SmoothD3vil
      @SmoothD3vil 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Hanna, I know I'm not Kati, but am a peer support advocate. I think part of getting over the fear is analyzing what it is that you are scared of. Additionally, you may not have to tell your parents everything, just that you are feeling really stressed with school/work and just need to talk to someone who can give you tools on how to handle that. If it's stigma that you're worried about, do your best to push that aside because worrying about what people think of you is never reason to neglect your own mental wellness. Best of luck to you! You can do it!

      That is one of my favourite ones too! I use it with my clients all the time because it's so easy to remember. Have you heard of STOP? That's a really good an simple one to use when we're feeling triggered or upset.

      Julia Kristina Counselling + Kat Golightly what do these stand for?

      Lucila Bolof HALT is an acronym. That stands for Hungry, angry, lonely, tired. All things that make someone vulnerable to escalating emotions or things you are when you make bad decisions.

      STOP is a tool when you're feeling emotionally triggered by something. It stands for Stop and take a breath, Tune into what happened, Observe what you are feeling, Proceed mindfully (I did a vid over on my channel on this aptly called: STOP! A Simple Way to Manage Your Emotions When Someone Makes You Really Upset).

    Hi Kati, thanks for sharing this! I was wondering if you could do a video on getting conflicting or multiple diagnosis and what you can do about that? Also, if you could do one on the different between psychotic symptoms and neurotic symptoms? Thank you!!!

    Hi Kati. I've been watching your videos and also sharing them with my real life therapist. She loves your content too! I am learning so much from you and really appreciate that you take the time to share this and put it up on YT for people to learn these skills, and for free! That's very generous! I have a suggestion for your DBT vids (which are the vids I personally am studying) - I'm actually using my DBT workbook (the one that you reference) while watching your videos - it would be super helpful if you could, in the video, state which page / chapter you are on in the book - so we can follow along easier? Thank you so much for all you do! :)
