Excellent series ... clearly explained and immediately useful. Having things written out and illustrated allows for both visual and auditory learning. Well presented!

You are amazing Tyler. Maybe one day we can compare notes: IE: I can closely predict slump as the concrete comes down the mixer’s chute… we need a 9, but a 10.5 makes placing easier for the pour-crew (especially when there is a lot of reinforcement in the slabs).

Excellent lectures, however would be better if measurements were in m or cm

I have a driveway R&R scheduled and what do you think will be the reaction of the contractor and delivery driver if I pull out a slump test cone and ask them to fill it before unloading into my forms? Seriously.

What do you think of Verifi system from GCP ?

Slump test is popular in field because of easiness of doing. Actually, the result is depends on several other factors. So, we need more sophisticated tests for instead slump test.

      Thanks Kiran,
It depends on what you want to measure. The slump test can be very helpful and it is cheap and easy. I agree though that sometimes we need to do something more.

For example, lifting speed of slump cone will make some influence on the slump value. And then compaction for each layer also makes some difference in value.

I agree that there is some difference but it is a very inexpensive test and it is fast. We don't need perfection with concrete. We need things to be good enough. Just because a test has some faults doesn't mean that it shouldn't be used. We should redesign the test to make it easier for people to run it correctly!

We should give more awareness about this test to the field people.

@@kiranrampp19 Lack of training and explanation is the main issue. Majority of people I saw doing slump tests had learned it from watching others and asking a few questions but didn't really know what to ask. I repaired broken equipment so didn't need to know but, if I had known this stuff 25~30 yrs ago it would have saved time and possibly led to better structures? The only place I remember seeing a full onsite lab doing all the tests was at second Severn Crossing between England and Wales. They even did core drilling of finished bridge sections for extra tests. It was a great place in the summer but during winter storms, not so much ;) It was scary being a mile out over estuary 200+ft up on bridge deck in 40~60mph winds. Only a couple of people were ever blown off though
