  • I spent some time several years back trying to find petrified tree ferns to no avail. Years later, I stumbled upon them while out exploring a new area. After studying and cutting the material, I can say with confidence that this area produces beautiful tree fern specimens, likely several species and genus present.

Thanks fellow Bendite! I appreciate that. Going to have to switch to the winter localities now. Think I'm going to go to Congleton Hollow next trip to look for some limb casts.

Hello from Pville😊 Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. You got some great finds. That blackish one does look like it has a cell structure to it, it honestly looks like fossilized bone. Well good luck on your adventures, I don’t get to rock hound out of Pville very much and you would be shocked at some of the rocks I find right here in town. Be safe and stay blessed.

Howdy from Bend. Thanks for watching! Yeah I really want to have that black one checked out by someone knowledgeable in plant and animal fossils. It is very unusual. You know, I believe you about rocks in Prineville. I have gotten out and walked the shoulder of the roads less than a mile from town and found really cool stuff, petrified wood, purple agate, etc. Always just random pieces of float.

Hey Bro, super cool finds. I'm down by Medford where I have some sweet honey holes for petrified wood as well as numerous jasper, agate, and various chalcedony formations. I would be stoked to follow along with you on a field trip if you ever allow tagalongs. Nice channel, thanks for the uploads.

    Sure love your channel!
Totally looks like cycads to me. It's those large angular tube/cells, for lack of a better term. Cycads have the trunk, the large flower cone on top, where the palm like leaves appear, and budding looking growths, and seeds! I think there are 3 main groups in these Cycadella species, like some in the Morrison Formation, Wyoming. All if memory serves. Don't know if it would be appropriate to your area. Would be cool if your brown artichoke spray looking section could be some kind of a bud. Dig deep in google images under fossil cycad, if you havn't recently. Regardless, love every piece you pick up in your vids. You have such beauties out there!!!

Thanks for the info. I think you're right about cycads. I think there's a mix a genera and species out here including cycads, ferns and palm wood. Pretty sure I have a mixed collection. Would live to get them all identified. Thanks for watching and cluing me into the cycads. Much appreciated!

    Hi Jay,
Thank you for your videos, I really enjoy them and have learned a lot by watching them. We just bought our first piece of equip a H P 16-110B Slab Saw, and it is wonderful what a joy to use, I was just watching this video, at 9:45, what a beautiful piece.
What do you recommend in filtering your oil, someone told me to use a paper bag?
What would you suggest for our first sander, a flat lap sander, or a wheel type?
    Thank you, Tom

Right on! Thanks a bunch. Can't go wrong with a Richardson's high speed sander for bigger specimens. It can get it to pre-polish pretty fast. If you want to cab or make small specimens, a Genie or Titan are good choices.

I just came across your channel. That is some awesome pet wood you found.
I know you don’t want to give out your exact location, but can you say roughly what area you were in?
We found a piece of petrified tree fern, in a river, east of Seattle. We also found a small log, still mostly encased in it’s matrix. This river isn’t known for pet wood, or anything special.
I would like to find a piece of what you found, and compare it with the piece I have.
If you have an email or anything, I can send you pics of what I have.
We are heading to Saddle Mountain in about a week. Our favorite place for petrified wood!

This is outside of Prineville. If you're ever in the area let me know. Lots of rattlesnakes in this area so I usually do this trip during cool weather.

Just saw your comment. We are heading that way tomorrow. I’m terrified of snakes, thanks for the warning!!! 😯
      I have snake guards!
