Fossil Fest & Beach Hunt!: Oregon Coast Rockhounding and 2024 Fossil Fest in Newport, Oregon

- Come to the Fossil Fest with me and we'll check out a great array of the incredible fossils featured there! Local Oregon Coast collectors show off their Fossil Crabs, Porpoise Skulls, Mammal bones, Shells, even a Turtle, and more. NARG (the North American Research Group) displayed a large assortment of fossils from throughout the west, some found on the field trips anyone who is a member can attend! After going to the show, we couldn't resist the need to go down to the beach and do some hunting ourselves; where we find agates, fossil shells, bones, and enjoy the sea creatures and views. It's an amazing Fossil filled coastal extravaganza!

TO YOUR QUESTIONS; Never Disappointed!!! Just to be out and about- Seeing Wonderful, Amazing, Beautiful/Gorgeous Creations and Them Fossils= Fossilized = preserved in time for many if not for all to see. I do like/LOVE Seeing So Many Things I've never before seen in my lifetime. So, when I see a Rock, Fossil and Pick them up, THE EMOTIONS GOING THROUGHOUT MY PERSON, THE THOUGHTS OF BEGING OF ITS BEING/LIFE OF ___ BEFORE FOSSILIZATION / ROCKS-GEMS-MINERALS HOW IT WAS FORM IN TIME IS BEYOND WORDS FOR ME- Should I say SPECTACULARLY SPECTACULAR??? Only One would/will know within oneself=feelings/thoughts. I personally LOVE Them All, Even The Smallest Pebble. THANK YOU FOR SHARING AND MANY BLESSINGS UPON YOU AND YOUR FAMILIA!!! I'm usually not disappointed with what I'm finding or not finding. What I am disappointed with sometimes is being partially disabled there's usually somewhere I would like to go but I know I would never get there and if I did I may not be able to get back. I have been known to take my Walker and if need be it's been in the creek
That's awesome that you're not disappointed, I'm sorry that it's hard for you to get out there sometimes. Whatever tools you need to have a good hunt, I say go for it with the walker in the river, I love the picture that paints! Keep rocking and thanks so much for watching!

In the past year I have only been disappointed a couple of times. That was only because there wasn't enough gravel on the beach to search through. Came away with barely a hand full of stones.
I know it can be such a let down when you head to the coast and all you see is sand! It's still so nice to be on the beach, hear the roar of the waves and breathe the fresh air. It's a bonus when there are thrilling rocks on the ground, though! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. Cheers!

That's so great to hear! There are some neat things both north and south of Yachats and you actually change the formations by driving those directions by millions of years! I always like the beaches between Yachats and Newport for some neat finds (Nye Mudstone) and North of Newport is Astoria Formation for fossil shells, bones, and other fun things. South is exciting too as we've seen some interesting shell and echinoid fossils going south (though I don't hunt too much farther south regularly). Instead of recommending a specific beach, I'd say look for gravel showing; the more rocks you can look at, the better your chances are of seeing something cool! Cheers!
I live on the central oregon coast and rarely find as many amazing things as you did this quickly. What precise beach are you at here?
There was decent gravel on the beach that day and that's really the key. It almost doesn't matter what beach, but whether or not there's just sand or if you've got some rocks/reef showing to peruse (depending on what you're looking for). If you'd like to reach me through my website (link's in the descriptions) I can give you more info. We usually just drive around until we see gravel...or get skunked, lol. All days aren't as good as this hunt (why there's a video, lol).
