Yeah, that was definitely the weakest part of this story. I couldn't understand why she still cared about Adele at all at that point. Sure, call the cops, but who in their right mind would actually go over there? much less all the astral projection nonsense. I did not enjoy the final 10 minutes. I was hoping for a very different story than what this turned out to be. (I haven't read the book and now have zero interest in doing so, but that's probably obvious by my comment.)
This is more or less what the author explains in the last pages of her book. She said it's about how when women get jealous they obsess about the other woman more than about the man they want (her words not mine).

I also felt bad for David, talking about how Adele used to “sparkle” and “didn’t know where the girl he saved in the fire went”. And now he married louise thinking she “sparkled” super blind again to the fact she is also gone.... all the women he has loved killed by this dude

The actress wasn't overweight so they portrayed her insecurities thru her wack ass outfits while awake and wrapped up hair like she aint give a fuck about her appearance. Now it's more apparent that gay men think women wear heals to be more appealing to men but its really how a gay man thinks about how to be a woman that's emphasized by the lack of appearance from the "real woman"
louise's lack of common sense throughout the entire show annoyed me the most. i get that it had been a long time since something exciting happened in her life and that she was bored out of her mind, but these people had so many red flags, and yet she kept mingling with them and even trying to play the detective so recklessly, when she had a son that she needed to protect. also, i don't understand why she didn't just call the police when she thought adele was gonna k*ll herself and why she thought it was a better idea to SLEEP outside a burning house and astral project, as if that could help in any way. that decision made no sense, even for louise's standards.
I just watched this yesterday and also wondered why she thought astral projection would be helpful in that situation. I enjoyed the show but hate that part. It was lame. Any normal person would have called 999.

Well that's a good point, but my question outside of this is how was Adele-Rob SO sure Louise would astral project so that he could take her body because, as you guys pointed out, it makes no sense for Louise to do that in the first place... So how was that part of the plan?
Adele's actress is amazing. While watching the series I was like: "Young Adele acts and looks SO DIFFERENT from older Adele. There is something missing" and that was what made me realize the switch before they showed it. She did an amazing job.
This might be a weird thing to say but as a former heroin addict if I had the chance to move into someone else's body that WASN'T addicted/dope sick, the last thing I would do is start doing dope in their body too. He just got to skip the entire withdrawal process, something I still have nightmares about. I realize this is tangential to the points in the video at best but still

I saw the biggest hint in the colour of their projections. Adele's was pink, Rob had blue, Louise green. But the current Adele suddenly had a blue projection, so that was weird... and then it all made sense.
I didn't notice Adele's colour cause I was too upset Louise's colour wasn't yellow. Cause from her real life and dreams it was obvious yellow was her colour.

I haven't read the book when I watched the series. I believed that the husband had killed the friend and I absolutely liked how they composed the ending.
The show kind of made it obvious when they assigned colours to their floating spirits or whatever. You saw in the flashback that Rob was blue and Adele was purple, then in the present "Adele's" was blue. I did like how the show made the comparison of Rob and Anthony more obvious. They were both drug users who obsessed over one person. Rob first obsessed with Adele then David, Anthony obsessed with David, then Adele. Both of them switched the target of their obsessions quickly.
They gave away that Adele was Rob by the color of his Aura. As soon as they showed Rob and Adele and blue and purple orbs, I knew Adele was Rob. There were blue wisps at the corner of the screen while he was watching them in earlier episodes...so the ending wasn’t even a surprise.
It was surprising for me. I was watching while doing other things so I didn't notice the aura colors until that fire scene. It was a surprising twist. I didn't watch any trailers or anything so I didn't even know it would be a thriller. Louise's stupid choices lost me but the ending brought me back.
Yeah but it doesnt show robs color until the end anyway so if you pick up on that its only slightly earlier than the actual reveal, I dont mind it being possible to figure out twists a llittle earlier

As a former heroin user who saw many people struggle with several bouts of rehab....it’s just as much a mental struggle as it is a physical one. Relapsing after being shut away isn’t something you do because you “just really like” heroin. Liking it has very little to do with it. Most people who are dependent don’t feel the high anymore. It’s just a way to stay feeling normal, like food. A way to stave off the unimaginable pain of withdrawal. The mental struggles of adapting to life without it last for months, during a time when you’d think that you’d be feeling happy and thankful for being free of it. For some people it’s a longer road than it is for others, but opiates are a pretty cruel problem to deal with once dependency becomes part of your life. Just wanted to give my two cents, I know you didn’t mean it in any malignant way or anything. Also, just so people don’t freak out: heroin isn’t habit-forming after one use, no more than anything else. It takes time, which can be shorter or longer depending on who you are. Physical dependency (where you begin to feel withdrawal without it) takes sustained, regular usage to develop (weeks to months, depending on your biology).
I think she stated it that way becasue thats how the character in the show said it. When Adele asks him about the heroin and said she thought he got clean or soemthing he says "i dont want to stop. I really like heroin" or something along those lines

I'm just reassuring anyone who might have tried it in ignorance or taken opioid prescriptions that they aren't suddenly addicted after a single exposure to it. I personally think that sort of over-the-top scare tactic is unhelpful where education would be better (similar to "abstinence-only sex ed").
The show totally lost me at the end when the house was on fire: like what a great idea to "fall asleep" next to a burning house 🤣 Just Louise being her silly self. It made no sense why she thought it was a solution to lucid dream herself into the house when she can't manipulate objects, etc, it would have made sense if Adele lied she would be able to and L. hasn't tried it herself yet so she got fooled or something. It was so stupid how fast she gave up on trying to enter the house the ordinary way. In my opinion, the twist was too heavily hinted at to actually be a proper surprise, like how they showed Rob & Adele in different colors when they lucid dreamed together.
I agree it felt so... forced? Like idk it was so out of character for Louise to do that, I think it would be more fitting for her to call the police/fire department as soon as she got the message, not try to go there and lucid dream herself into the house... That ending made me soooooooo mad like make it make sense!!

I'm still laughing at how Rob had his whole master plan depending on one stupid decision from Louise. I also got super annoyed at how L. was reading the journal at one point, got to a very shocking part & was like: "guess that's enough for today" and didn't just turn the next page. You'd think she would be tempted to know the what happens next without delaying it, but that won't be convenient for the plot. :D

She did it so she could walk Adele's body out of the building. It was clear to Rob that she would do it since Louise had tried to save Adele already before. The chance that Louise would not have projected was big so it was risky.
I have very mixed feelings, I was actually very invested and affected by the story, I loved the show so much that I even ordered the book, but being a gay dude, I also kinda dislike how it reinforces a very false and unfair stereotype of gay guys getting obsessed with or violating straight guys... In my experience, that's actually one of the things that makes it the most difficult for straight guys to wanna be friends with gay guys, cuz this absolutely stupid stereotype exists in some people's heads... As if all straight men wanna fuck all women, whether if it's a reciprocated attraction or not lol. It doesn't work like that for straight guys OR gay guyd either.
I didn't like how Rob was made to be the villain in the end. He was always so nice and seemed to really care about his friend. Doesn't seemed like him to suddenly be so obsessed with this guy to the point of killing his only friend.
Agreed! After watching the series, I read this review for it that said it changed genres halfway through the series, and that's what messed with me the most. I wanted to watch a psychological thriller - not a scifi/body-switching plot. Also, I feel terrible for Adam! I know the book doesn't have a sequel, but I think it'd be interesting to see a grown-up Adam unravel the story of what happened to his mom and deal with Rob once and for all.
I can watch a movie that's fairly boring with a super exciting finale (The Invitation springs to mind), but a six-hour commitment for ten minutes of "awesome"? Yeah, no.
The thing is The Invitation is boring af, while Behind her eyes was interesting the whole time because there was a clear mystery which was slowly revealed (i.e. their past and why their relations are so weird atm). So not comparable at all, also disagree that the series is boring.

I personally loved it because of the twist and the fact it had a dark skinned lead where her race wasn't the focus of the story. I get the criticism though, especially about the story having homophobic/transphobic undertones. I think because they didn't make Rob's whole character based around his sexuality (which is new for Netflix writing), I saw his obsession with David and desire to switch as him wanting a better life. Adele was wealthy, attractive and had someone who loved her, Rob was an addict, had a shitty sister and no place to call his own. Had Adele been a man, I have no doubt Rob would have done the same thing. But I can see how this could be harmful a la JK Rowling.
If all Rob was obsessed with was a better life, or as he puts it: being pretty and having money, he could have very well divorce David, and live his new life in Adele's body on his own from then on. But he clearly gets mad jealous of every woman that gets David's affection, going so far to kill another one and steal her body. I don't think there is space to read this in a way where Rob isn't presented at the crazy obsessive gay man going after the straight guy and that's just yikes.

Does anyone else get a creepy vibe from an author writing a gay dude who forcefully enters a lady's body so he can be with another dude? Kinda gives me a JK Rowling's "Troubled Blood" feeling. Low-to-high-key homophobia/transphobia vibes. Like, interesting twist, I guess, but also a deeply harmful cliché/trope (man who becomes a woman = predator).
I personally didn't see this as a problem, it was clear that Rob didn't do what he did just because his whole personality was being gay. They laid out his desperation to escape his horrid life of poverty, abuse and addiction and he only did this because he was a selfish/greedy for someone else's life. I don't think there's anything wrong with writing a complex villain who's gay and is selfish in his desire for another man. I personally don't want to see boring/perfect gay characters with no "problematic" characterizations or motivations because that isn't realistic. Especially in a supernatural story-line that would give a bad person the ability to do crazy shit. But if you didn't like it, that's understandable

David gives off super non mistakeable red flags, he's dishonest, hot headed and controlling... I mean... What did the show try to tell us with making him the good guy after all? Also from David's perspective, he doesn't know about the magic stuff, he basically only knows that Adele does not feel guilty about her friend overdosing and that she gets jealous and vengeful when she suspects him being unfaithful. How does that justify him forcing her to take strong antipsychotic pills every day? Or controlling where she goes?

It's even cooler because in the movie the kid was the son was the only who noticed something wasn't right. I do feel really bad for the son because he knows something is wrong, but doesn't seem like anyone else seems to either care or even notice

I'm so glad someone else said this, it was my main takeaway from this boring ass show. Like.. of course they would the poor drug addicted gay man is the villain in the end. It's not that gay people can't ever do anything wrong, but the fact that that there is no other representation and that he takes a womans place and is sleeping with a straight man has very strong gay scare vibes.
I don't think this show was homophobic mainly because if Rob was Roberta it wouldn't have made a difference. For me it's Rob's violation of Adele and David that is the most tragic thing not his gender.

It seemed like the end was trying to be really sad and shocking but maybe they didn't really put in the character development to deserve the big emotions.
I was enjoying the story & build up except as soon as she received a self harm text and didn't call police, saw fire and didn't call fire brigade took me right out of it. You just would. And then the whole last sequence was dependant on Louise choosing to go to sleep instead of calling 999- if she had done anything else (which you would) then the body swap wouldn't have happened. I also thought the way that David is so relieved at the end got me thinking that maybe he's been in on it the whole time, knew it was Rob in the body and was picking the next body for him to have- now that would have been a great twist!
Now that I’ve seen this commentary I do see that this series lost a lot of its potential. It could have been so much more mysterious and scary. However I do still like this series, especially because I just feel so bad for David and Adele. David genuinely thought his childhood love and wife was a fucking nutter/murder when in actuality she was already dead. And not only was she dead but who she was and how good of a person she was was ruined by rob forever in David’s eyes. And is Adele at peace? Probably not, so it highly likely she’s just ghosting around David watching all this shit. In conclusion...fuck rob.

Louise called 112 (European emergency number) in the cab, the fire department just didn't come yet so she wanted to save "Adele"... somehow. It still didn't make sense that she stayed outside a burning building UNCONCIOUS, but yeah... she did call for help.

Interesting perspective but in this context I disagree because this is a story about one gay man not all gay men. That would be like saying the story feels racist like “black women will befriend you and sleep with your husband”. But yea, this show should’ve been a movie, what a waste of time.
I mean, he did still legally cheat on her... But being on the situation he was in, I would divorce her (as he doesn't really love her anymore) and make sure she gets the help she needs.
I was always interested in the concept of Lucid Dreaming and stuff so i was gomma watch it.. Then when i realized it's also astral projection it got more interesting and the last 10 minutes were fucking insane.. So for me it was good.

hi gay man here. totally get you feel that way but I didn't get that feeling at all. It was more of a terrible human being who felt so alone and was willing to do anything to not feel alone. We also do have to remember that there are some terrible people out there regardless of sexuality - although i can see your point if someone who isn't as open to the LGBT community that this movie can be taken to that extent.
The part where Amanda mentioned the cat was unintentionally amusing, since my cat had pulled a Georgie earlier today and I called the non-emergency police line for the first time in my life to report that my cat had gone into the sewer.
I watched this series because I love thrillers, and kept waiting for it to get interesting and then astral projecting cool, fine and Robert is suspicious but the ending and poor Adam sad little face was like uh?! So yeah I didn´t like it, wasn´t the worst but it is true that the characters are underveloped.
I really enjoyed this show right until the ending, then I hated it. It did have clichés and it was all a bit kitchen-sink drama for my usual tastes but it was engaging enough after episode 2, I liked that the protagonist was a black single mom (I was a little taken out by the fact that this black woman working seemingly three days a week as a receptionist could apparently afford a fair sized two-bedroom flat in London but hey I guess the show doesn't have to go there if it doesn't want to) and I liked that one of the important side characters was a gay man from Glasgow from a poor background who dealt with personal demons that didn't boil down to "he's suffering for being gay". The story became more enthralling, I wanted to know what was up with Adele and David, the show knew how to have fun sometimes which I appreciated. Even the astral projecting didn't take me out too much, usually I'd find it too fantastical in this sort of show but they were having fun with it, though it was obvious they'd be a big twist at the end regarding it. I even predicted that body swapping was going to be a thing, but I figured it would be revealed that David and Rob had body swapped and that's why 'David' had become so disillusioned with the relationship after his original body was killed and he wasn't happy anymore all after he'd been so enamoured with Adele and her lifestyle. I even figured that's why it was shown early on that David didn't enjoy sex with Adele and preferred anal sex with her instead (obviously I was wrong about all of that, also that would have still been horrible to portray, a gay man trying to force himself to have sex with a woman). Anyway then the shit hit the fan. Louise just kept making bad, unjustifiable decisions, and genuinely why did she astral project when Adele was in the burning house? She didn't know body swapping was possible did she? Earlier in the series she broke a window to 'save' Adele so why wasn't that an option in her head? At first I thought the show was going for a nuanced portrayal of Adele. She's a bit emotionally immature and her perfect fairytale life with the perfect guy and all her money just don't fulfil her, and something clearly happened in the past that ruined that relationship anyway and now David has become this distant, resentful man who just can't love this woman anymore but he feels locked in. But no Adele's just crazy, except she isn't because she's actually Rob. And Rob's just crazy. He's a drug-addicted, jealous, manipulative, crazy person. Also his name's Rob, because he's going to rob this woman of her body and lifestyle and husband. So yeah according to this show, watch out for gay men. Watch out for the poor. Don't give those gay poors anything, not friendship or even healthy ways to alleviate their suffering. They'll just abuse your gifts and your trust and ruin the lives of the rich straight folk. Like that isn't even subtext, it's the text of the show. It's the final message. Maybe it wouldn't be if they'd explored Louise's situation a bit more. Again she's a single black mother living in London with her kid and pre-existing health issues but she doesn't struggle economically at all? They even made a point in the map scene that she doesn't live near David "how the other side live", she isn't rich like them at all. Maybe she could have been a poor person mixed up between these two unhappy rich people, she could have made better choices based on her having a kid, or not living the same lifestyle of those two. She could have walked away from these two rich people who take everything for granted and can't stop torturing each other. But no the show ends with Louise dead, Adam's lost his mother, David's going to be miserable again after Rob/Louise threatens a waitress for smiling at David, and the only gay man in the show is going to continue ruining these straight people's lives because he's a malicious, life stealing, predatory, poor gay man, who also knows how to correctly wash, dry and maintain a black woman's hair. Not a bad thing but even I, myself a poor lgbt+ white man, knows that it isn't the same as white women's hair.
You said exactly what I thought when watching the show, like why wouldn’t you call the police or fire fighters first if you saw a house burning. What the hell was she trying to achieve by astral projecting in that moment, it was so incredibly stupid. I felt so sorry for Adam, that’s the part that disturbed me the most. And yeah it was very slow burn and kind of boring almost until the last episode.
I'm annoyed by the gay community's response about the villain being gay. There are no bad gay people? Also said gay person was acted very human-ly - you could see the love on his face - he was also a person filled with a lot of anger, not seemingly due to his gayness either. I thought it could have been edited a bit more - but overall the payoff was good. The bateman guy who played David just had dreadful lines and didn't have much to work with as an Actor. The rest of cast (I feel sorry that Adele is bone-o's daughter in real life) did amazing.
After watching the series I realized that the reason that David got inraged when Adele said she was going for coffee was that his last fling was with the woman who worked in the coffee shop and Adele said that to stir the pot.
Interesting to see that an abusive relationship can actually push someone into cheating, and then it creates a "well, you cheated, so you are the baddie here"
I'm going to be honest Amanda, I think this show was super disappointing in my honest opinion. I enjoyed it as a simple psychological thriller, the acting was decent, the characters motives were interesting and I love the mind games between Adele, Louise and David, but personally I didn't like the supernatural astral projection part of the mystery. I thought the body swapping soul thing was predictable, telegraphed and once I picked up that something was off with Adele, the supernatural section in episodes 5 and 6 really took me out of it personally. I just think it's lazy writing given that the first four episodes were great as is just with a simple single woman spying on two unhealthy people's marriage. Sure if there was no supernatural elements to this show then the plot would be generic, but this body swapping thing reads more shock value than actual good mystery writing to me. Sure it was cool with the little clues here and there, but really.... I just want to say that Rob's entire mastermind, super genius, 5D chess move plan was so over the top and relied a lot on characters making dumb decisions and not explaining themselves properly to other people. Louise was shown to be nosy and investigative, when she could have just avoided this couple after the several warnings she was given, but I agree her not calling the police when Adele set fire to their home and getting trapped by Rob was probably the stupidest and dumbest ending ever in my opinion. If David had just explained things to Louise instead of playing the cagey asshole perfectionist, this mystery would have resolved itself faster. Poor Adele didn't deserve this fate honestly and I just hate how immersion breaking the supernatural body swapping was, since to me this story would have been a little tolerable without it. I can buy lucid dreaming to a point, but to me there was no evidence of magical body swapping other than some implied esoteric themes that weren't implemented well in my opinion. If Adele hallucinated all of this and was playing the both of them instead, then I would have tolerated this mystery more. Also might I add that this show is sort of problematic with certain themes, such as Rob's entire character being this deranged gay man with drug issues. He just met David for a few moments and is now super jealous of Adele out of nowhere despite the two sharing a close friendly bond. I hate how this show paints people struggling with mental illness as crazy and the entire thriller of this plot is just "a predatory gay man who invades other women's bodies to sleep with this one boring and possessive guy" Frankly I think it's very toxic even for a thriller and it implies that gay men will do whatever it takes to get their man, even if it means killing someone, which to me is very no bueno. What does Rob see in David anyway other than that one moment of affection, yeah he's mentally unstable, but I just find this plot super icky. I don't know feel free to roast me in the comments anyone who happens to read this, I love your videos Amanda and I'd love get a discussion going surrounding the themes of this show even if I heavily disliked it. The character being gay didn’t matter. He was just a bad person periodt. He wanted to escape from his life and become someone who is super rich and super pretty and after all the stories Adele told of David and seeing David it was love at first sight. This could’ve been played by a normal woman. It doesn’t matter the point is whoever played ‘rob’ was going to be a person that desperately wanted a new life being gay wasn’t the only motivation he wanted to have a new life and escape. He viewed Adele as an escape and David as the unconditional love he always wanted

Omg everything you wrote is exactly what bothered me about this show. The writing was definitely lazy. I agree they introduced the supernatural element way too late. It should have been part of the world building and story telling in the beginning of the show. Now it just felt like a convenient solution to explain Adele’s behaviour and the problems in their relationship. I didn’t like the way they wrote Louise’s character either. Her motivation and decisions a lot of times didn’t make sense. I mean would a single mother really be this careless and not consider the fact that she’s responsible for her son before she made such foolish decisions? The dialogue between David and Louise too. What did they even like about each other? Their relationship felt forced in a way to move the plot forward. I just wasn’t convinced that they were “so drawn to each other” The way they handled robs character was indeed problematic, but I also felt like it didn’t even make sense. We know he was supposed to be attracted to David but I don’t feel like that was conveyed at all ( if that was even their intention). They should have just stuck with him being obsessed with Adele and her life and make that the focus instead because this was just super unclear to me. In the end I was just more annoyed and not satisfied like this show had potential but they didn’t seem to know what kind of show they wanted to be.
@@heyna135 I always say this every time I watch or read a thriller, if a sudden plot twist is used for shock value and that alone, it doesn't necessarily make it a good twist and from how this show was written, it made no sense. I've seen all the episodes and I agree that Louise and David's relationship was hella forced to facilitate this deranged, mastermind plan. To be honest, what did Adele, Louise or even Rob see in David other than him being a handsome face who is decent to others? From what the show has shown me of him, he's possessive, controlling, an asshole perfectionist, wow totally lady killer material lmao. He might have been different with Marianne, but who cares about her right, she's the one that got away. Rob's entire motivation is just to seek David's affection by manipulating the women he possess to embody the traits David loves, a gay man preying after a straight man, that's totally not problematic as hell omfg. I agree that if he wanted Adele's seemingly perfect life it'd make more sense. Still doesn't excuse the lazy body swapping excuse. If Louise minded her own business, the show wouldn't really be as long as it was and she'd probably still be alive, but it still boggles my mind that she thought astral projecting herself where she couldn't help Adele was going to help her, if anything it sounded like she just read the script and said eff it to common sense or logic.

I saw the twist coming a mile off, I felt like I should want the hours I watched it back but hey! I watched it on the weekend and was feeling lazy and it was perfect for my mood. Also, I used to live in London so I was entertained by the shots of London in this, and the property porn aspects of it. David and Adele's house and garden was gorgeous. And I loved Louise's flat (apartment) too. So I won't watch it again and won't be thinking about it but it was ok.
Lucid dreaming could be really a useful tool to resolve some issues and improve your mental health if you're guided by a professional BUT, let's mistify this strange process and transform it into magic power so anyone that would be seriously interested to the actual process is belittled. Yeah, way to go.

Kinda wish the author wrote little hints to this, for example: Adele didn’t care about money, had no fashion since Rob being obsessed with money and loving clothes When Rob was Adele all the sudden she is always shopping and dresses very well.

There is something about the trope of "men impersonating women in order to do nefarious things" doesn't sit super well with me. It just feels too close to some transphobic rhetoric. They also portray a gay man as predatory in his desire of a straight man... which.... Yikes. And like gender identity =/= sexual orientation. A gay man can be a gay man without wanting to be a woman. A trans woman is a woman regardless of her sexual orientation... And like the fact that the real villain is mentally ill... like, yeah bitch, me too. Sure, call the cops, but who in their right mind would actually go over there? much less all the astral projection nonsense. I did not enjoy the final 10 minutes. I was hoping for a very different story than what this turned out to be. (I haven't read the book and now have zero interest in doing so, but that's probably obvious by my comment.)

louise's lack of common sense throughout the entire show annoyed me the most. i get that it had been a long time since something exciting happened in her life and that she was bored out of her mind, but these people had so many red flags, and yet she kept mingling with them and even trying to play the detective so recklessly, when she had a son that she needed to protect. also, i don't understand why she didn't just call the police when she thought adele was gonna k*ll herself and why she thought it was a better idea to SLEEP outside a burning house and astral project, as if that could help in any way. that decision made no sense, even for louise's standards.

Adele's actress is amazing. While watching the series I was like: "Young Adele acts and looks SO DIFFERENT from older Adele. There is something missing" and that was what made me realize the switch before they showed it. She did an amazing job.

I saw the biggest hint in the colour of their projections. Adele's was pink, Rob had blue, Louise green. But the current Adele suddenly had a blue projection, so that was weird... and then it all made sense.
When I was first watching it, I didn't connect the colours. I was too distracted by the adultery.
I didn't notice Adele's colour cause I was too upset Louise's colour wasn't yellow. Cause from her real life and dreams it was obvious yellow was her colour.

The show kind of made it obvious when they assigned colours to their floating spirits or whatever. You saw in the flashback that Rob was blue and Adele was purple, then in the present "Adele's" was blue. I did like how the show made the comparison of Rob and Anthony more obvious. They were both drug users who obsessed over one person. Rob first obsessed with Adele then David, Anthony obsessed with David, then Adele. Both of them switched the target of their obsessions quickly.
The best part of this video is the fact that the cat was ok

It was surprising for me. I was watching while doing other things so I didn't notice the aura colors until that fire scene. It was a surprising twist. I didn't watch any trailers or anything so I didn't even know it would be a thriller. Louise's stupid choices lost me but the ending brought me back.
Yeah but it doesnt show robs color until the end anyway so if you pick up on that its only slightly earlier than the actual reveal, I dont mind it being possible to figure out twists a llittle earlier

As a former heroin user who saw many people struggle with several bouts of rehab....it’s just as much a mental struggle as it is a physical one. Relapsing after being shut away isn’t something you do because you “just really like” heroin. Liking it has very little to do with it. Most people who are dependent don’t feel the high anymore. It’s just a way to stay feeling normal, like food. A way to stave off the unimaginable pain of withdrawal. The mental struggles of adapting to life without it last for months, during a time when you’d think that you’d be feeling happy and thankful for being free of it.
For some people it’s a longer road than it is for others, but opiates are a pretty cruel problem to deal with once dependency becomes part of your life. Just wanted to give my two cents, I know you didn’t mean it in any malignant way or anything.
Also, just so people don’t freak out: heroin isn’t habit-forming after one use, no more than anything else. It takes time, which can be shorter or longer depending on who you are. Physical dependency (where you begin to feel withdrawal without it) takes sustained, regular usage to develop (weeks to months, depending on your biology).
However, do NOT try heroin just because it's supposedly not habit-forming after one use, SpontaneousH would tell you different.
I think she stated it that way becasue thats how the character in the show said it. When Adele asks him about the heroin and said she thought he got clean or soemthing he says "i dont want to stop. I really like heroin" or something along those lines

I'm just reassuring anyone who might have tried it in ignorance or taken opioid prescriptions that they aren't suddenly addicted after a single exposure to it. I personally think that sort of over-the-top scare tactic is unhelpful where education would be better (similar to "abstinence-only sex ed").

The show totally lost me at the end when the house was on fire: like what a great idea to "fall asleep" next to a burning house 🤣 Just Louise being her silly self. It made no sense why she thought it was a solution to lucid dream herself into the house when she can't manipulate objects, etc, it would have made sense if Adele lied she would be able to and L. hasn't tried it herself yet so she got fooled or something. It was so stupid how fast she gave up on trying to enter the house the ordinary way. In my opinion, the twist was too heavily hinted at to actually be a proper surprise, like how they showed Rob & Adele in different colors when they lucid dreamed together.

Like idk it was so out of character for Louise to do that, I think it would be more fitting for her to call the police/fire department as soon as she got the message, not try to go there and lucid dream herself into the house... That ending made me soooooooo mad like make it make sense!!
@@lvmln7843 it was pretty clear the plot needed a way for "Adele" to steal her body & they chose the cheapest one to do it. I'm still laughing at how Rob had his whole master plan depending on one stupid decision from Louise. I also got super annoyed at how L. was reading the journal at one point, got to a very shocking part & was like: "guess that's enough for today" and didn't just turn the next page. You'd think she would be tempted to know the what happens next without delaying it, but that won't be convenient for the plot. :D

@@dezzymarlon1622 Rob's most definitely in her body, it's hinted multiple times, we know he stole Adele's body and we saw the color of his astral form (or whatever it's called, it's blue), same one that entered Louise's body.
She did it so she could walk Adele's body out of the building. It was clear to Rob that she would do it since Louise had tried to save Adele already before. The chance that Louise would not have projected was big so it was risky.
I have very mixed feelings, I was actually very invested and affected by the story, I loved the show so much that I even ordered the book, but being a gay dude, I also kinda dislike how it reinforces a very false and unfair stereotype of gay guys getting obsessed with or violating straight guys... In my experience, that's actually one of the things that makes it the most difficult for straight guys to wanna be friends with gay guys, cuz this absolutely stupid stereotype exists in some people's heads... As if all straight men wanna fuck all women, whether if it's a reciprocated attraction or not lol. It doesn't work like that for straight guys OR gay guyd either.

Agreed! After watching the series, I read this review for it that said it changed genres halfway through the series, and that's what messed with me the most. I wanted to watch a psychological thriller - not a scifi/body-switching plot. Also, I feel terrible for Adam! I know the book doesn't have a sequel, but I think it'd be interesting to see a grown-up Adam unravel the story of what happened to his mom and deal with Rob once and for all.

I personally loved it because of the twist and the fact it had a dark skinned lead where her race wasn't the focus of the story. I get the criticism though, especially about the story having homophobic/transphobic undertones. I think because they didn't make Rob's whole character based around his sexuality (which is new for Netflix writing), I saw his obsession with David and desire to switch as him wanting a better life. Adele was wealthy, attractive and had someone who loved her, Rob was an addict, had a shitty sister and no place to call his own. Had Adele been a man, I have no doubt Rob would have done the same thing. But I can see how this could be harmful a la JK Rowling.
If all Rob was obsessed with was a better life, or as he puts it: being pretty and having money, he could have very well divorce David, and live his new life in Adele's body on his own from then on. But he clearly gets mad jealous of every woman that gets David's affection, going so far to kill another one and steal her body. I don't think there is space to read this in a way where Rob isn't presented at the crazy obsessive gay man going after the straight guy and that's just yikes.

I personally didn't see this as a problem, it was clear that Rob didn't do what he did just because his whole personality was being gay. They laid out his desperation to escape his horrid life of poverty, abuse and addiction and he only did this because he was a selfish/greedy for someone else's life.
I don't think there's anything wrong with writing a complex villain who's gay and is selfish in his desire for another man. I personally don't want to see boring/perfect gay characters with no "problematic" characterizations or motivations because that isn't realistic. Especially in a supernatural story-line that would give a bad person the ability to do crazy shit. But if you didn't like it, that's understandable

Also from David's perspective, he doesn't know about the magic stuff, he basically only knows that Adele does not feel guilty about her friend overdosing and that she gets jealous and vengeful when she suspects him being unfaithful. How does that justify him forcing her to take strong antipsychotic pills every day? Or controlling where she goes?

It seemed like the end was trying to be really sad and shocking but maybe they didn't really put in the character development to deserve the big emotions.

I was enjoying the story & build up except as soon as she received a self harm text and didn't call police, saw fire and didn't call fire brigade took me right out of it. You just would. And then the whole last sequence was dependant on Louise choosing to go to sleep instead of calling 999- if she had done anything else (which you would) then the body swap wouldn't have happened. I also thought the way that David is so relieved at the end got me thinking that maybe he's been in on it the whole time, knew it was Rob in the body and was picking the next body for him to have- now that would have been a great twist!
Now that I’ve seen this commentary I do see that this series lost a lot of its potential. It could have been so much more mysterious and scary. However I do still like this series, especially because I just feel so bad for David and Adele. David genuinely thought his childhood love and wife was a fucking nutter/murder when in actuality she was already dead. And not only was she dead but who she was and how good of a person she was was ruined by rob forever in David’s eyes. And is Adele at peace? Probably not, so it highly likely she’s just ghosting around David watching all this shit. In conclusion...fuck rob.

hi gay man here. totally get you feel that way but I didn't get that feeling at all. It was more of a terrible human being who felt so alone and was willing to do anything to not feel alone. We also do have to remember that there are some terrible people out there regardless of sexuality - although i can see your point if someone who isn't as open to the LGBT community that this movie can be taken to that extent.

the series had me for 5 episodes but it completely failed me on the final episode...that twist was so ridiculous that it made me dislike the series

I watched this series because I love thrillers, and kept waiting for it to get interesting and then astral projecting cool, fine and Robert is suspicious but the ending and poor Adam sad little face was like uh?! So yeah I didn´t like it, wasn´t the worst but it is true that the characters are underveloped.

I really enjoyed this show right until the ending, then I hated it.
It did have clichés and it was all a bit kitchen-sink drama for my usual tastes but it was engaging enough after episode 2, I liked that the protagonist was a black single mom (I was a little taken out by the fact that this black woman working seemingly three days a week as a receptionist could apparently afford a fair sized two-bedroom flat in London but hey I guess the show doesn't have to go there if it doesn't want to) and I liked that one of the important side characters was a gay man from Glasgow from a poor background who dealt with personal demons that didn't boil down to "he's suffering for being gay".
The story became more enthralling, I wanted to know what was up with Adele and David, the show knew how to have fun sometimes which I appreciated. Even the astral projecting didn't take me out too much, usually I'd find it too fantastical in this sort of show but they were having fun with it, though it was obvious they'd be a big twist at the end regarding it.
I even predicted that body swapping was going to be a thing, but I figured it would be revealed that David and Rob had body swapped and that's why 'David' had become so disillusioned with the relationship after his original body was killed and he wasn't happy anymore all after he'd been so enamoured with Adele and her lifestyle. I even figured that's why it was shown early on that David didn't enjoy sex with Adele and preferred anal sex with her instead (obviously I was wrong about all of that, also that would have still been horrible to portray, a gay man trying to force himself to have sex with a woman).
Anyway then the shit hit the fan.
Louise just kept making bad, unjustifiable decisions, and genuinely why did she astral project when Adele was in the burning house? She didn't know body swapping was possible did she? Earlier in the series she broke a window to 'save' Adele so why wasn't that an option in her head?
At first I thought the show was going for a nuanced portrayal of Adele. She's a bit emotionally immature and her perfect fairytale life with the perfect guy and all her money just don't fulfil her, and something clearly happened in the past that ruined that relationship anyway and now David has become this distant, resentful man who just can't love this woman anymore but he feels locked in.
But no Adele's just crazy, except she isn't because she's actually Rob. And Rob's just crazy. He's a drug-addicted, jealous, manipulative, crazy person. Also his name's Rob, because he's going to rob this woman of her body and lifestyle and husband.
So yeah according to this show, watch out for gay men. Watch out for the poor. Don't give those gay poors anything, not friendship or even healthy ways to alleviate their suffering. They'll just abuse your gifts and your trust and ruin the lives of the rich straight folk.
Like that isn't even subtext, it's the text of the show. It's the final message.
Maybe it wouldn't be if they'd explored Louise's situation a bit more. Again she's a single black mother living in London with her kid and pre-existing health issues but she doesn't struggle economically at all? They even made a point in the map scene that she doesn't live near David "how the other side live", she isn't rich like them at all. Maybe she could have been a poor person mixed up between these two unhappy rich people, she could have made better choices based on her having a kid, or not living the same lifestyle of those two. She could have walked away from these two rich people who take everything for granted and can't stop torturing each other.
But no the show ends with Louise dead, Adam's lost his mother, David's going to be miserable again after Rob/Louise threatens a waitress for smiling at David, and the only gay man in the show is going to continue ruining these straight people's lives because he's a malicious, life stealing, predatory, poor gay man, who also knows how to correctly wash, dry and maintain a black woman's hair. Not a bad thing but even I, myself a poor lgbt+ white man, knows that it isn't the same as white women's hair.

What the hell was she trying to achieve by astral projecting in that moment, it was so incredibly stupid. I felt so sorry for Adam, that’s the part that disturbed me the most. And yeah it was very slow burn and kind of boring almost until the last episode.

I'm annoyed by the gay community's response about the villain being gay. There are no bad gay people? Also said gay person was acted very human-ly - you could see the love on his face - he was also a person filled with a lot of anger, not seemingly due to his gayness either. I thought it could have been edited a bit more - but overall the payoff was good. The bateman guy who played David just had dreadful lines and didn't have much to work with as an Actor. The rest of cast (I feel sorry that Adele is bone-o's daughter in real life) did amazing.

I'm going to be honest Amanda, I think this show was super disappointing in my honest opinion. I enjoyed it as a simple psychological thriller, the acting was decent, the characters motives were interesting and I love the mind games between Adele, Louise and David, but personally I didn't like the supernatural astral projection part of the mystery. I thought the body swapping soul thing was predictable, telegraphed and once I picked up that something was off with Adele, the supernatural section in episodes 5 and 6 really took me out of it personally. I just think it's lazy writing given that the first four episodes were great as is just with a simple single woman spying on two unhealthy people's marriage.
Sure if there was no supernatural elements to this show then the plot would be generic, but this body swapping thing reads more shock value than actual good mystery writing to me. Sure it was cool with the little clues here and there, but really....
I just want to say that Rob's entire mastermind, super genius, 5D chess move plan was so over the top and relied a lot on characters making dumb decisions and not explaining themselves properly to other people. Louise was shown to be nosy and investigative, when she could have just avoided this couple after the several warnings she was given, but I agree her not calling the police when Adele set fire to their home and getting trapped by Rob was probably the stupidest and dumbest ending ever in my opinion.
If David had just explained things to Louise instead of playing the cagey asshole perfectionist, this mystery would have resolved itself faster. Poor Adele didn't deserve this fate honestly and I just hate how immersion breaking the supernatural body swapping was, since to me this story would have been a little tolerable without it. I can buy lucid dreaming to a point, but to me there was no evidence of magical body swapping other than some implied esoteric themes that weren't implemented well in my opinion. If Adele hallucinated all of this and was playing the both of them instead, then I would have tolerated this mystery more.
Also might I add that this show is sort of problematic with certain themes, such as Rob's entire character being this deranged gay man with drug issues. He just met David for a few moments and is now super jealous of Adele out of nowhere despite the two sharing a close friendly bond.
I hate how this show paints people struggling with mental illness as crazy and the entire thriller of this plot is just "a predatory gay man who invades other women's bodies to sleep with this one boring and possessive guy" Frankly I think it's very toxic even for a thriller and it implies that gay men will do whatever it takes to get their man, even if it means killing someone, which to me is very no bueno. What does Rob see in David anyway other than that one moment of affection, yeah he's mentally unstable, but I just find this plot super icky.

The character being gay didn’t matter. He was just a bad person periodt. He wanted to escape from his life and become someone who is super rich and super pretty and after all the stories Adele told of David and seeing David it was love at first sight. This could’ve been played by a normal woman. It doesn’t matter the point is whoever played ‘rob’ was going to be a person that desperately wanted a new life being gay wasn’t the only motivation he wanted to have a new life and escape. He viewed Adele as an escape and David as the unconditional love he always wanted

Omg everything you wrote is exactly what bothered me about this show. The writing was definitely lazy. I agree they introduced the supernatural element way too late. It should have been part of the world building and story telling in the beginning of the show. Now it just felt like a convenient solution to explain Adele’s behaviour and the problems in their relationship.
I didn’t like the way they wrote Louise’s character either. Her motivation and decisions a lot of times didn’t make sense. I mean would a single mother really be this careless and not consider the fact that she’s responsible for her son before she made such foolish decisions? The dialogue between David and Louise too. What did they even like about each other? Their relationship felt forced in a way to move the plot forward. I just wasn’t convinced that they were “so drawn to each other”
The way they handled robs character was indeed problematic, but I also felt like it didn’t even make sense. We know he was supposed to be attracted to David but I don’t feel like that was conveyed at all ( if that was even their intention). They should have just stuck with him being obsessed with Adele and her life and make that the focus instead because this was just super unclear to me.
In the end I was just more annoyed and not satisfied like this show had potential but they didn’t seem to know what kind of show they wanted to be.
@@heyna135 I always say this every time I watch or read a thriller, if a sudden plot twist is used for shock value and that alone, it doesn't necessarily make it a good twist and from how this show was written, it made no sense.
I've seen all the episodes and I agree that Louise and David's relationship was hella forced to facilitate this deranged, mastermind plan. To be honest, what did Adele, Louise or even Rob see in David other than him being a handsome face who is decent to others? From what the show has shown me of him, he's possessive, controlling, an asshole perfectionist, wow totally lady killer material lmao. He might have been different with Marianne, but who cares about her right, she's the one that got away.
Rob's entire motivation is just to seek David's affection by manipulating the women he possess to embody the traits David loves, a gay man preying after a straight man, that's totally not problematic as hell omfg. I agree that if he wanted Adele's seemingly perfect life it'd make more sense. Still doesn't excuse the lazy body swapping excuse.
If Louise minded her own business, the show wouldn't really be as long as it was and she'd probably still be alive, but it still boggles my mind that she thought astral projecting herself where she couldn't help Adele was going to help her, if anything it sounded like she just read the script and said eff it to common sense or logic.

They also made such a leap from lucid dreaming to astral projection like it would have been nice if they actually explained the connection between the two.They should have used those first few episodes better to write the characters and concepts better.

I saw the twist coming a mile off, I felt like I should want the hours I watched it back but hey! I watched it on the weekend and was feeling lazy and it was perfect for my mood. Also, I used to live in London so I was entertained by the shots of London in this, and the property porn aspects of it. David and Adele's house and garden was gorgeous. And I loved Louise's flat (apartment) too. So I won't watch it again and won't be thinking about it but it was ok.

Lucid dreaming could be really a useful tool to resolve some issues and improve your mental health if you're guided by a professional BUT, let's mistify this strange process and transform it into magic power so anyone that would be seriously interested to the actual process is belittled. Yeah, way to go.
