Hoof Restoration: Distortion in Front Hooves - Perfect Hind Hooves

  • This video shows me trimming all 4 hooves on a 16 hand Tennessee Walking Horse. This horse is prone to capsular distortion in his front hooves. During wet conditions (which we are currently experiencing) his toes don't just get long his entire capsule stretches forward. This unfortunately cannot be fixed during one trim appointment 😕. Bringing a stretched hoof capsule back to balance requires small adjustments over many trimming cycles. Although visually this horse front hooves have room for improvement. He is currently sound and comfortable walking on all ground surfaces. I would just like to hopefully keep and maintain that comfort level by continuing to make small improvements over time.
I hope you enjoy the video and find it informative! Feel free to leave me questions and comments. I read them all and respond to them all personally!

I am SO pleased you said that it could just be the horse. My horse has a longer hoof capsule and people kept chopping his toes off. When I xray’d - his coffin bone was so close to the front of the hoof. He really didn’t benefit from having the toes chopped off.

Thank you so much for watching! They are definitely all unique in their conformation. Some horses are just happiest with a long toe. And at the end of the day the horse is always right!

Nice job once again. I am really enjoying your videos especially the explanations you give on each hoof and what you're doing and why.

@@The_Female_Farrier yes! If you could discuss how to care for the hooves when it is hot and the ground is dry (a common problem here in Indiana) also winter care such as should we treat with a particular balm or oil, etc. another thought is during wet turnout should over reach boots go on or off. What is the best way to clean mud out of hooves for barefoot and hooves with shoes. I pick then brush but I noticed that you use a narrower brush. Also should you brush the mud and dirt on the exterior of the hoof, wash etc.A big one would be how to talk to your farrier, especially if you have a concern. Thank you so much for your channel you are making a very positive impact

I thought of another couple of things, first would be how to know if your horse has a bruised hoof and what to do if this happpens, next would be when your horse has a large chip or tear what should you do and when to be concerned about a vertical crack

I have a horse that came to me with a high/low correction needed; however, I see her heels out of place which is causing her bars to grow out and forward. How can I correct this? I cannot afford weekly farrier trimmings but her hooves grow so fast and flare on me during the eight weeks we are waiting for another trim so I would like to start correcting myself. Her hi9gh/low arabian thing is not dramatic but like I said, I really need to get those bars to grow properly so she can stop falring

Most horses can’t tolerate an 8 week schedule. When a horse is high low I usually don’t keep them on anything longer than a 5 week schedule otherwise you will 100% be chasing distortion. You would either have to have the farrier or more frequently or start trimming yourself between visits. Without seeing pictures of your horses hooves and seeing video of its movement I won’t be able to give you accurate trimming advice.

Did you grow up with horses and then ended up being a farrier?

    • @The_Female_Farrier

No actually I didn’t. We moved onto a couple of acres when I was a teenager so we could have horses. When I was in college I couldn’t afford the hoof care my horse needed. So my awesome farrier taught me how to trim and shoe her myself. Then when I graduated from college I apprenticed with him full time and the rest is history.

She's right. You see that ridge in the front hoof sole? That's where his toe wants to go. The back hooves don't have that ridge, they're just a nice bowl.
