"Smelly cat, smelly what are they feeding you. Smelly cat, smelly cat it's not your fault. They won't take you to the vet. You're obviously not their favorite pet. You may not be a bed of roses. And you're no friend of those with noses............" ~Phoebe Buffay and the Hairballs (from the sitcom "Friends")
I would also like to add that clogged or infected anal glands can cause a bad smell. It was the case for our cat and the vet was able to simply empty them and the smell is now gone. Most cats empty them on their own while using the litterbox but in some cases the contents may become thicker and they can't empty them properly and require a little extra help :) But most important thing to remember is: if anything seems off smell related or otherwise, take your cat to the vet. They are very good at hiding illness and symptoms can be very subtle
My 2 year old's cat's breath smells like the bottom of a bait bucket. She was feral as a baby & will not let me brush them. We can only afford a vet or doctor for absolute emergencies, thanks to a bi-annual rent hike ever since the pandemic ended. Any advice?
Brush them? you mean her teeth? She may have plaque and need a dental cleaning, Meds for infection, or her teeth may fall out. If you can't use a cat toothbrush, try using a Qtip. Kind of 'wipe' with clean area of Q in a wipe and roll motion. use one or two to a side if you need to. Get the walmart kind with the paper stick, not the plastic ones. It is a learning curve, so do a little at a time, and try not to stress her out. It will take time to get used to it. My cat needed it every day after a prof. cleaning, then cleaning at least once a year by vet. IT TAKES TIME AND PATIENCE FOR HER TO GET USED TO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO DAILY. If you have gotten her used to it a little at a time in 6 mos/a year, you have done well.
Ask your vet for some tranqs. Once her inner eyelid indicates she is calm take her to a large pet store that offers self wash. U get access to professional equipment for 10 bucks. I've been doing this for my 16 year old with liver cancer. She needs weekly baths & will not let me wash her unless she is on cloud 9.
My old girl is a senior almost geriatric with mobility issues and pees on herself at least half the time she pees, and prefers pee pads over litterboxes. She is on pain management meds, but one makes her more wobbly so doesn't help in this regard. I know why she's a stinker butt lol. Shes also a persian and i give her sani trims every few months. She gets a bath every 4 wks minimum and has waterless cat products and cornstarch powder for her bum in between. She's literally just like a baby 💜
Have you tried glucosamine/chondroitin supplements? Cosequin is over the counter and is made for cats, if she's not allergic to shellfish, it can help. Takes a few weeks to see results. Otherwise, very expensive, but adequan (injectable subcutaneously) is an rx med that did wonders for my cat with mobility issues. Both of these help the joints get/stay more flexible and less painful by helping the body repair them. Sadly, there aren't a lot of pain meds that are safe for cats long term, and some vets are reluctant to rx the stronger ones. If you haven't tried playing with the dosing on the meds she's on, that might be worthwhile, too. You might be able to find a lower dose that will help her pain without making her wobbly. I use a small "milligram" scale I got from Amazon for making such adjustments. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this video. My cat has had bad breath - so we are trying to help him with that. Can't afford the vet's cleaning costs.

Gassy kitten, he has gotten better but I almost named him stinky at first. 😹
