P1S update was an amazing improvement. Previously I could hear the print throughout the house - almost making "music" with the upper/lower sweeps of pitch, but the update made it so that I just hear the movement noise now, not the motors...So, while it may not seem a lot on a Db meter, in real world, it is amazing.
IKR, it is an ongoing joike with me and my kids, we could make the exact noises by mouth when it goes through calibration right before a print lol now after it starts the kids are kinda lost hahaha
I have a X1C and it was audibly quieter afterwards, but it’d be interesting to do frequency analysis of the sound, because as you observed it is still a noisy printer. For me it just sounds different.
That MS10 db meter cuts off at 8,000 Hz, so any higher frequencies are just ignored. Depending on your age and the amount of loud sounds you exposed yourself to over your entire lifetime I'd say chances are you'd still be able to hear some higher frequencies. Which would change how you perceive the sound of the printer but they won't be reported by that meter. Also, the said meter applies a non flat weighting to calculate the displayed values.
The update was supposed to change noise levels of the motors, but the loudest part is the aux fan. So a noise level meter can't pick up a big difference, because fans produce white noise that covers the entire frequency spectrum. However if you turn down the fan to 50% or less then you notice the changes a lot. Before the update the motors themselves were producing sound in the lower frequency spectrum, which requires a lot more sound energy. We just don't notice it that much because humans are more sensitive in the medium and high frequency range. After the update you can hear a lot less of these low frequency (high energy frequency). This directly changes how far the soud can travel and how much it is affected by walls and doors. I think the noise level meter would also show a bigger difference if the fan was off before and after the update.
@@Tome4kkkk No, the aux fan and the chamber fan are two different ones. The chamber fan is in the back of the printer and the aux fan is the big one to the left of the heated bed. It always blows onto the part. It is there for additional part cooling to allow faster printing. Both fans can be replaced and you can get replacements in the bambu store.

When your model is not that big, it is better to reduce the speed to 40% or less and place the object closer to the fan. Not sure if adding a noctua fan is that useful in this scenario because the main noise level actually comes from the duct that forms the airflow, which is supposed to be a rather flat plane. This is to avoid cooling down the heated bed and only affect the top surface of the print. After using the printer for almost a year I don''t feel like it's a problem. I rarely set it to faster than 60% and don't print with the fastest possible speed, because the prints are also weaker and there is more internal stress when printing very fast.

Mine has noticeably less motor noise now. It's so much so that i moved the unit from my basement to upstairs and I still hear it less. Fan noise is the same but kinda like white noise. The axis motor noise levels are way reduced and thats the distracting part. Turn the fan down and the difference is huge. Also... restart your machine again. Another minor update rolled out right aftet this
That is not huge difference but I could hear the noise of my X1c in my bedroom (printer is in the other room) with old firmware and after upgrading firmware, I can't hear anything.
what people need to understand about decibels (dB) is that it's not a linear scale of magnitude, it's logarithmic; meaning that a little change goes a long way.
From my experience it also depends a lot on the print. On small prints it's much quieter, while on prints with a lot of long and fast X&Y Axis movements the difference seems much more minor.
I've been running a few PETG prints over the last few days, there's a really noticeable noise difference after the firmware update. It went from being annoying loud to the point where I didn't want to work in the same room while it ran (still not as bad as printing PLA), to being much more comfortable. I've not tried with PLA yet but I'd imagine that the additional fan noise reduces the benefit considerably.
looking for info before upating mine, i read on reddit, some people have problem after update like warping , part not stick, then spaghetti. is it fixed?
Would be interesting to see how much just the motor noise is reduced by doing a print with very lo fan speed. The sound level seems a little lower, but more importantly it seemed to reduce the higher pitched sounds which we might be more sensitive to, even at the same db.
It sounds like they * found out spreadcycle/stealthchop * are tuning for minimum (noise) stepper current to not loose steps * could be fiddling with waveforms as well? The middle one might be added to other firmwares as well, if normal drivers can detect skips (or check if endstop is where it should be after rapid moves). Fortunately non-BL printers have had silent drivers for a long time. But the real question is: how does it compare to the competition?
dont feel like a decibel meter is the correct tool for measuring the noise reduction. The frequency of the generated sounds is much less noticeable after the update.

One caveat. There is a problem with the filament calibration in 1.05. LOTS of posts on this in the BL forum. And you CAN rollback an update in the Handy app.

dB is logarithmic so 3 dB is actually a doubling. That said the way we perceive it and the reason why the scale is logarithmic is that 3 dB doesn’t actually feel like nearly as much of a change. So they actually accomplished quite a bit here. Now if only they could also quiet down the fans too.
Yeah on my x1c ,which is pretty much the same enclosure as this one. I have never had any issue with PLA with nothing open. It's recommended by Bambu but I have no idea why.
Just measuring the decibels doesn't really tell the whole story. You should have check the spectrum of noise as in my subjective opinion what's gone is the high-pitched whiney noises and those were able to permeate through my office doors and through my ventilation around the house, but now it's just the fans that are loud and I've noticed no difference in quality with PLA if I turn the chamber fan from 70% to 50% and the aux fan down a bit as well, but the noise is a lot less noticable.
I would hope that was demonstrated with the sound recording, which was the whole point. Checking spectrum, as I already noted in another comment, is well beyond the remit of a small channel's budget - in fact even bambu's budget apparently as they used a similar meter to me in their own demonstration.
For the test you should have turned the fans off at least the exhaust one. It is very noticeably quieter as there was a very high pitch and rumble noises before ignoring the fans.
@@foundintech You can print a muffler or change to Noctua. The exhaust fan should be lowered for sure and chamber fan doesn't do much. After all this update is for the motion system noise not the fans if you are doing a research do it accordingly.
Feel free to do your own version if you have specific experiments you want to run. I wanted to measure overall print sound. Which I did. I'm not interested in diving any deeper in the second channel content at this time.

Your info is wrong the P1S can roll back the firmware the, X1C can not rollback the firmware because of the jailbreak. Bambu doesn’t want people to use it so they blocked firmware rollback. The noise is night and day difference. New firmware released 1.05.1

What is the deal with silent motors. Trinamic drivers already accomplish that and much more(but only a few printers take advantage of all the cutting edge features). BL reinvented the wheel?, by designing its own stepper drivers from cheaper controllers and now making it silent through a firmware update?🤔. Definitely makes BL machines little quieter.😂❤👍

Which fan is the AUX fan? You mean the chamber exhaust fan? Is a replacement possible?

can you do a ‘tips to make it quieter’ - eg for a vanilla PLA print : open door/chamber fan off or lower speed; aux fan speeds etc?

I tried it - it sounds exactly as you'd imagine: loud when fast.

I don't, and I'm not sure why other people think they need to. The fan in the back comes on to remove air, seems like enough to prevent any issues.

3dB is double sound level
3 dB is smallest difference that you can hear. Ears and processing beyond them is funny.

On 1.5.0 it could not but once you update to 1.5.1 (which came out last night) you can roll it back.
When I did the update on my P1P a text explicitly warned that rolling back wouldn't be possible after the update. And from what I see, that's true.
