  • Every so often, a member of the CarGurus UK team makes a video to introduce the cars that they own themselves, and about 18 months ago, it was the turn of Deputy Editor Ivan Aistrop to introduce his rather lovely 2006 Skoda Octavia vRS Mk2.
And during that introduction, Ivan stated that what he liked most about his car was that it didn't feel anywhere near as old as its 16 years, and that what's good about it is all the same stuff that's good about the all-new Mk4 version, but for a fraction of the price. However, he stopped short of doing a direct comparison between his old car and the brand new car because he thought it wouldn't be fair on his car. Well, this video puts that right...
Yep, so confident is Ivan that his snotty old Skoda will stand comparison with Skoda's latest offering that he compares them directly in all of the super-important areas considered in a regular CarGurus road test: practicality, quality, performance, comfort, handling, refinement and all the rest of it. And - spoiler alert! - the result is closer than you might think, even though the prices involved certainly aren't...

Good stuff sticking up for the older model still a usable example owned. VRS on a 10 plate great fast family car and if you wanted to let it off the leash it would eat up the miles very quickly you never arrived late at your destination 😉

I'm having an 06 plate Octavia VRS being delivered next Friday and I'm super excited. I've owned two Mk1s over the years so I am looking forward to an upgrade

I took delivery of a MK IV yesterday, a short drive and i think its the best vRS I've owned to date. And I've driven or owned a vRS since 2004 (a boring old fart, I know.....but I love em).
I did my advanced driving course in a 2004 vRS and it was that which made me a lover of Skoda Octavia vRS'. I also drove one in anger, a 2006 model with 125,000 on the clock which could easily keep up with the Volvo V70s I also drove at work and could run rings round them on smaller streets and side roads, except where speed humps were encountered!
But I do like the refinement of the MK IV. My MK III goes today, sad to see it go, but I'm looking forward to taking the MK IV on long journeys and in particular onto the German Autobahn to give it a clear out.
    Nice video.

Thanks for the shout out!! Interesting to see the comparison to the latest one; I'd rather have the mk2 and save the cash! Would love to see more reviews of used cars like this. Cheers!

Not a big fan of the mk4 but love every generation before it. Mk1 and mark 2 facelift are my favourite

You know if you have the Octavia vrs mark 2 engine mapped you would be surprised how this engine can perform. Plus saving yourself a packet load of cash and in 2023 that has to be a serious consideration.

    Is A 2009 Skoda Octavia a Mark 3?

You forgot to mention that the Mk 4 is very pretty too. Much prettier than the Mk 2 (Alright, alright I know. Looks are subjective etc etc)

Really good comparison showing value for money on second hand, well made cars. It also perhaps shows how little progress has been made overall in car design and technology, although the sudden rise of electric cars maybe counters that arguement?

Another great video Ivan. Some spot on comments clearly illustrating that the comparison is not as clear cut as as the point scores show. The new car is clearly better but at a huge cost difference and that should not be ignored. Some addition consideration for the older car though. It's long out of warranty and has probably done a huge amount of miles so things will wear out or go wrong but that's just part of having an old car. Yes this could be expensive but still a fraction of the difference in car cost difference. Another point would be the increasing number of clean air zones may well require a charge for the older model. This could significantly increase running costs but again you could do a huge amount of them before you rack up a huge bill. Skoda cars tend to be pretty good value compared to other members of the VW group. In your position I'd certainly hang on to the MKII right up until it starts costing big money or parts become hard to find. For information I've not driven either of these cars but I did own a petrol MKIII VRS DSG that was an ex demonstrator so had some extra toys and loved it.

We loved our pre-facelift Mk2 170CR DSG, amazingly practical car but the engine was rattling itself to bits 😢

A fruitier sounding engine?? If you turn off the fake noise it sounds like a sewing machine. I know, i've owned one for almost 2 years.

    • @chillout1109
      @chillout1109 ปีที่แล้ว

It sounds fruitier from outside though, especially if you get the DSG which will reward you with those trademark VW Group snorts and pops on upshifts.

@@chillout1109 Never once in the 2 years i've owned mine has it ever done anything that sounds like either a snort or a pop on up or downshifts. It does however sound like a sewing machine.
