Sorry to say, that's NOT an NHS car. It belonged to a private ambulance company (UK Specialist Ambulance Services I think). Nearly all NHS trust's used the Scout, and nearly all were equipped the same way (built by the same coachbuilders).
I would have said sort the easy/cheap wins, get an MOT and sell but the windscreen is a significant and unavoidable cost. Thing is, those Skoda estates do have a bit of a following and the VRS badge doesn't hurt. The miles aren't so much of a problem for a diesel. Fix the roof, front bumper, turbo actuator (or pipe leak) and make it presentable and review your situation. What else have you got needing your input ?

As someone who drives these for a living I wouldn't go mad spending time and money to fix. They have a hard (and I mean hard) life getting driven 24/7 on all sorts of roads and lanes . Saying that I love Octavia's and they are solid vehicles , I even drive one as my daily !
Not an NHS Ambulance car. Was originally owned by a private ambulance company called M&L based in Rainham Essex. Company was renamed UK Specialist Ambulance Service (UKSAS). Company went into administration and folded last year. If you want some more history about it, let me know and will happily tell you abit more about it.
Love the content and enjoy the channel. I've had ex police cars before and there usually maintained regardless of cost with a full service printout. Would have thought ambulance service would be same has a third party messed with it after. Seems like a lot of effort and work to put right think I'd just clean it inside and out and remove the tints and then flip it listing the faults
I’d sort any major mechanical issue/s. A few interior bits; new door card, replace broken switches. I’d just use a painted bung for the roof. Maybe new screen. A decent valet, MoT & call it quits. Look to make £500 profit
I have the same engine on my A3. i had to replace the turbo actuator as it gave an underboost fault, DPF clogged up and had to be cleaned, and the CAYC engines are notorious for injectors failures. If your injectors end with a B letter, they are the old type and tend to fail, if they end with an S, it is an updated injector type and should be OK !
I bought a 2007 model during summer…. Garage knew the injectors were knackered but didn’t tell me. Had to source a replacement on eBay, since then it’s been sweet as a nut, very economical and comfortable drive.
As an Ambo vehicle, I think this is in good condition. In Aus emergency vehicles have dozens of holes drilled into the dash and trims, and usually a handful of holes drilled through the body to feed various bits of tech, lighting and electronics.
It was owned by a private company rather than the NHS unfortunately so its unlikely it would have been looked after as well. See picture of it in service; www.flickr.com/photos/ga132/16031846977/
I bought one about 8 months ago 2013 62 black line edition with full leathers, paid 3500 for it, 100k on clock, spent around 1k on dsg service, full service, front and rear brake discs and pads and timing belt kit, what a beautiful car fantastic to drive and excellent fuel economy when careful, very capable car.
Sink a couple of 100£ in it, it's still a vrs, fix the most damming faults like the roof holes and the door card can be bought cheap and the boonet release and fix the boost issue and flip it, here in Norway that would still probably bring 8k when running good or contact the guys over at car throttle they love the high milage heroes.
My León TDI mk1 (same platform, one generation older) does "check engine" + "glow plug" combined as a signal. It's even in the instructions - check engine on + glow plug flashing = problem detected, both permanently on = error stored in the computer, that goes away after a while. And in these TDIs it's basically always the turbo. I've upgraded mine after ~140kkm, but the flashing glow plug came back when a hose from the intercooler to the engine came loose. To me, those lights are normal, that means the car works and you just need to fix one thing (in the case of the hose, we've secured it with a self-tapper because the boost was too high and normal hose clamp couldn't cope with it, hehe).
I think that as most of the problems with the Skoda are easy fixes, do the work and make some money. It is all good content for your channel and lots of people can relate to the state of this car!
Being an emergency vehicle, it may have been remapped. As result of remapping those engines with the DPF can result in premature faults. May be worth rolling road it to see if its the original map...
First thing to do is track down the service history before spending a copper coin.shouldnt be too difficult as most service history now is on computer, especially with Skoda dealerships.find out if it has been maintained, engines are good for 300k.fix her up,mot and keep as a parts go getter, rubbish hauler etc.she will work hard for you if treated/maintained right.
The OSR definitely looked warped when you span it. Personally if I’d bought that I’d clean it up the best I could for as little money as possible, things like remove the tints and give it a wash. It would then go on eBay listing the most obvious issues but inviting inspection pre bidding as you’re putting the onus on the bidder. You’ll clear way more than £1500, seen octavia taxi’s with 400k on sell for more than that so you’ll definitely earn a drink from it. Fixing it would cost at least £1000 (wheel refurb, roof repair & paint, changing worn/ replacing missing parts etc. Some of the bits you need like the missing interior light surround might be on the breaker MK5 you’ve got, I’d even check that for bump stops, mats etc. As the saying goes, you can’t polish a turd 😂
Saving Salvage if you eBay auction it the onus is generally on the buyer once the major stuff has been listed. Wondering if the bonnet handle and trim on that MK5 is the same, most bits are interchangeable so it’s a cheap fix for content but don’t adjust your standards for content. A quick punt video is equally interesting, just done and dusted in one episode.
i bought my brother a skoda octavia 1.6tdi 2010 plate for £500 off an ex taxi driver had a full MOT only down side was 224k miles but drives so nice needed a front grille and that was it £30 tax a year too ... second day we got it i took it on road trip east coast and still running strong 4 months on and on around 230k miles now so a fair bit of use, you can find some proper bargains out there 👍🏼
Pesky Part timers it’s not only that. People are watching TH-cam and thinking ‘I can do that to get a cheap car for myself’ and they are jumping on Copart and bidding everything up because they don’t want to sell it after they’ll pay more and not know when to stop bidding so they pay over the odds.
Clean the injectors, put new glow plugs in as well as new engine- and gearboxoil and see if the engine light dissapears. A dashboard without any warninglights is a good dashboard, gives confidence. Give it a good clean, especially the inside, and sell it with a new MOT. Done on a budget. The rest, as in welding and painting, replacing parts as doorguard and bumper is expensive, so I wouldn't do that.
New subscriber here, love you're videos! Always interesting especially with you being UK based. (You could definitely do with better lightning for shots under for the car 🧐)
A video on diagnosing the underboost would be interesting. My CR170 leon just chucked the p0299 fault and read about the common actuator. Be interesting to watch before mine goes in the garage!
My fiance father has same model over 10 years no issue with engine. Run smooth like brand new. Only issue was transmission nothing else. I dont think this car peace of crap if you can find less than 200k mileage car.
Fix it I had a 2009 vrs had the same fault it was just a new boost pressure sensor, the air con pump always fails on that model but you try to tighten up the center screw in on the pump by removing wheel and inside cover I did and aircon started working again. Bearings can also go a common fault even on the mk3
my heart says save it but if you put it right I doubt whether you could draw 3000 quid for it. No history, high mileage and heavy use. I would: remove tints, scrub from top to bottom. Cosmetically tidy roof and rail holes and fit rubber bungs to seal them up (thats what. Ex police used to do), sell as spares or repair listing main faults. Option B would be do minimum to put MOT on it and sell as potential minicab. Pity as they’re a sound car normally. (An old mate told me a Mondeo estate he used for private hire is still doing the job with over 700k miles on it!!)
For content sake I hope you fix it up as best you can. Financially it may be the less viable options for you though mate. I love rebuild videos so I vote rebuild, it's not my wallet :)
The boost issue Iv came across on this vag group engine comes in at higher gears higher speeds. Say in 6th accelerate 70-80 off power back on power then limp mode hits
As you said at the beginning you said you saw it was an ex NHS car and you decided to rescue it this car definitely deserves your magical touch to bring it back to it's former glory
That was a tasty-looking Ford Mustang in the background. I work at Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group in Cambridge, right next to a Marshall Motors showroom, with a bright orange and a bright green Mustang... one day, baby. Still, I can't complain. When I joined Marshall, I needed a new car. I got a brand new 2019 Skoda Octavia SE L with all the toys, in metallic red, and the company paid the deposit and the first two services. I haven't had the second yet. Great company to work for.
£3k sounds possible. I sold my silver hatch VRS with this engine and gearbox, 160k on the clock, FSH, no faults, last year for about £3.5k. I'm sure I could have got nearer £4k, maybe even more, if I'd held on for a bit, but I needed it to be sold as I had a new VRS with no-where to park it. It was a brilliant car, never went wrong mechanically in 7 years. Just normal service items every year. Snapped a front spring at 120k but that's just one of those things. Nice and quick. Handled well. Comfy. Brilliant. Large following for these, especially the estate, so yeah, £3k is do-able. Just don't turn it off when it's doing a regen - it will be idling at about 1100rpm when it's doing one and runs noticeably hotter and more roughly when it is regenning, and at about 800rpm normally. Good luck. Great channel 👍🇬🇧
The drive shafts bolt thing is pretty standard problem on skoda and seat but not so much on vw for some reason. I reckon there is a lot of life in the car yet and personally I would do it up for my own use but I am no so sure you have much room to make a profit. I'm currently running a vivaro with 415k on it and all original parts apart from power steering pump and I've had great value from the machine so you could probably get at least another couple of hundred k of use from this machine with the right care.
I have an 09 plate VRS and it's showroom compared to that, but they're basically VW/Audis and the VRS goes like shit of a shovel. I've gone through one DPF in 98k miles and that's about it for trouble.
First of all, the tyres, if it was an NHS Car it would have had premium tyres on it, my brother is a rapid response paramedic and all the car generally have Michelin, even the vans get decent tyres. I’d imagine they’ve prob sent to auction needing new tyres, someone has maybe picked it up prior to you and started with it and decided not worth the bother. Secondly, used to drive these Octavia’s as a taxi driver, granted not the VRS but majority of mines where 2.0 140’s, last one I sold was on 360k, all the wee problems you’ve mentioned, drivers door card, air filter box, shocker covers etc etc are all common problems with a car around that mileage. I ran that shape of Facelift Octavia from when they where launched in 2009 till my last one on a 62 plate, that being on 360k, was only sold as it had to come off the road due to license restrictions.... I sold that for £1500 I’d keep it, tidy it up, tons of parts available, eBay, Facebook market place or even Briskoda.net Would make a great daily with some love
Part way through this before anyone asks. Can buy a book pack for not much and print all Mot's off. Assume Essex NHS Trust, bet you can get emailed history printout and had 3 cambelt changes. Worth saving. Might be some service history via the Skoda app too. If alternator, starter motor, turbo and camshaft alright you've a decent one. I've seen worse via ex Police trader websites.
Mk4 golf platform cars get a glow plug light flash when the brake pedal/light switch is faulty. Might explain bulb out light? Possibly not on a CAN car, though.... you should fix it up, loads of similar cars on the road you may end up helping a few people whilst making a couple of hundred £.
I believe it was an ambulance vehicle, however somebody has purchased it after and has just not put the vehicle on their name e.g. a trader might have had it for a while and then dumped it back on Copart (very common). The tints are aftermarket and usually emergency service vehicles have branded tyres.
Hi there this is what I would do, fix the boost problem maybe remove turbo strip and clean the variable vanes maybe that will sort the boost problem out then clean it up and cut your losses as one of the guys on here said put your money towards the RS4 engine I would be curious to find out what exactly happened to it im sure it can be repaired regards from Paris
Think this is one to let go, can see it being more trouble than it’s worth, and don’t really think there’s much money to be made, It’s one of those that can bite you in the arse, Keep up with your really interesting content, well done
I have one for sale right now, 171k, mint condition compared to this, part history as service book was misplaced but can assure its always been serviced and can tell by the way the car drives. Even had an engine rebuild around 140k - asking £2300 no offers!
Not sure how much it could bring since the used car maeket in the UK is juat nuts (very cheap, here are pretty expensive). Here a Taxi with much more "miles" can go for 3.500-5.000 € without repairing anything. Feom the looks of it it's not that bad, cosmetic the hole on the roof was to be expected, be glad they attached the lights to the bars instead of the roof itself. Like I said there no clue, here you could make some profit. To be fair it's in quite good shape for a "fleet car", damages are pretty small and it's dirty; no surprise really.
A had one it was the 2.0 petrol 4x4 great running car ex armed reponse they plug the roof hole with a rubber gromet thing can get them on ebay for all diameters bit of sealant job done. Crazy the money they skoda octavia scouts fetch way stupid milage would rather put my cash on red oil pumps still used be a chain changed to gearing but they strip not as comon but still hapends lol
I'm shocked at the cheapo tyres used,I've never heard of the makes either. To think that potentially a paramedic drove that in anger with crappy mix matched tyres.Every paramedic car I've seen had Michelin cross climates on so don't know why that hasn't. I think you should do the bear minimum to it and send it down the road.
Put it on ebay, new windscreen and refurbishing the alloys is the best part of £500. Ideal if you are going to do it up to keep but can’t really see any profit in this.
Mess about with it between other jobs..buy 4 black door cards probably cheaper and more available than a vrs one..£100 aside for good valet..remove tints plastic trim clips in roof rails will do..your only major expense is paint..leave oil leak just good steam clean.. Jobs a good un..
Fix what you could live with and clean up courtesy car/bomber around or advertising mobile van and if you see parts on the go while other cars get done then when you think it's ready pass it on engine should see another 250k with proper maintenance on it and then some so there is many options for saving it would be great if does find new home they did blog running report to look forward watching onwards
I thought do it up at first but changed my mind. Get it looking clean inside & out make it safe & put a grommet in the hole. May make a couple of hundred on it. Too boring a car for me. Would have been better if it was petrol.
I have a 08 Blue Octavia VRS, spent so much money on it engine wise, still not got to the bottom of numerous issues, extremely unreliable in my experience but still can’t part with it because I’ve put so much time and work into it!
Ive got a 2009 octavia vrs tsi petrol. Bought it for £4k in 2018 and spent £3k rebuilding the engine 😭 That tdi is an absolute mess. Youd almost be better off breaking it, but spares and repairs would be best bet as youll get 1-2k as its a facelift.
Current car situation secondhand car market is through the roof but on a good day is probably £1500quid £1895 max but with the secondhand car market situation and van market should I say as well the Sky is the limit

It was owned by a private company rather than the NHS unfortunately so its unlikely it would have been looked after as well. See picture of it in service; www.flickr.com/photos/ga132/16031846977/
Well done finding that!
Good research!
Well done on finding that mate👍👍
Agreed, The tyres give it away. NHS would fit branded tyres not budgets, same with the Police only fit Goodyears
Detictive!
The off side rear wheel had a flat spot I would watch the video back and look at it again
will do, thanks
Tyre was flat, so out of shape if parked up for 3 months!
Basic spruce up, valet inside and out, quick face refurb on the wheels with a rattle can , rubber grommet in roof, Mot + service and get shot.
I think that as most of the problems with the Skoda are easy fixes, do the work and make some money. It is all good content for your channel and lots of people can relate to the state of this car!
Very true
Being an emergency vehicle, it may have been remapped. As result of remapping those engines with the DPF can result in premature faults. May be worth rolling road it to see if its the original map...
It doesn’t feel mapped. Mayby I should do a 0-60 with draggy 😂
As the saying goes, you can’t polish a turd 😂
yeah pretty much spot on
Saving Salvage if you eBay auction it the onus is generally on the buyer once the major stuff has been listed. Wondering if the bonnet handle and trim on that MK5 is the same, most bits are interchangeable so it’s a cheap fix for content but don’t adjust your standards for content.
A quick punt video is equally interesting, just done and dusted in one episode.
Love your vids Dean. Flip this old dog it sounds like a tractor too.....when we were clapping for the NHS they were clapping to See the back of it!,
18:53 🤣🤣 I know them face expressions. Deep down you are praying I hope I don't breakdown on a busy road
i bought my brother a skoda octavia 1.6tdi 2010 plate for £500 off an ex taxi driver had a full MOT only down side was 224k miles but drives so nice needed a front grille and that was it £30 tax a year too ... second day we got it i took it on road trip east coast and still running strong 4 months on and on around 230k miles now so a fair bit of use, you can find some proper bargains out there 👍🏼
Tidy it up and list it up for sale. I would be glad to see more of the RS4! 🙏
3.5k for a 10 year old Skoda with nearly 200k on it? Really?
Good the faults fixed it'll last for another 200k easy. There's a reason vw Audi have made the best cars in the road for the last 20 yrs
There's no such thing as a cheap copart car anymore
You're not wrong
There a lot of people that are paying over the odds for everything at copart 🤷♂️
The prices are mental at the min
Foreigners got to launder their dodgy money somewhere....
Such watchable content, glad I subscribed
Fix it I had a 2009 vrs had the same fault it was just a new boost pressure sensor, the air con pump always fails on that model but you try to tighten up the center screw in on the pump by removing wheel and inside cover I did and aircon started working again. Bearings can also go a common fault even on the mk3
check the small l bow hose that comes out from the turbo , and if you see oil camming from the turbo maybe the o ring is leaking
my heart says save it but if you put it right I doubt whether you could draw 3000 quid for it.
Bought a 1.4 skoda octavia estate the other day haha, rear end damage though, am going to pick it up tomorrow for a 200 mile drive home...
This video was so funny. I know it probably wasn’t meant to be but your sarcasm was great 🤣🤙🏻
As you said at the beginning you said you saw it was an ex NHS car and you decided to rescue it this car definitely deserves your magical touch to bring it back to it's former glory
Check out the build series with it on my playlist :) I'm from Cambridge so know Marshalls well, mainly the car side
Get it mechanically fine then sell it, bung the roof with a gland and sealant under the gland
I sold that for £1500
I’d keep it, tidy it up, tons of parts available, eBay, Facebook market place or even Briskoda.net
Would make a great daily with some love
Part way through this before anyone asks. Can buy a book pack for not much and print all Mot's off. Assume Essex NHS Trust, bet you can get emailed history printout and had 3 cambelt changes. Worth saving. Might be some service history via the Skoda app too. If alternator, starter motor, turbo and camshaft alright you've a decent one. I've seen worse via ex Police trader websites.
Would like to see you fixing it. Might not be bring any profit, but if you can make it even it would bring a lot of content.
Great videos!!
Also the bonnet latch on your mk5 part car should work, if not I’ll send you one from a mk5 I have (y)
Although if the switch is faulty would the car expect to see an illuminated bulb? Probably not
I believe it was an ambulance vehicle, however somebody has purchased it after and has just not put the vehicle on their name e.g. a trader might have had it for a while and then dumped it back on Copart (very common).
The tints are aftermarket and usually emergency service vehicles have branded tyres.
I recon you should turn into a convertible
10 yrs ago , i bought an 04 ex police car Skoda Octavia 2 PreFl , i m still happy with it
Had a similar issue with mine, glow plug light flashing and loss of power now and again turned out to be air mass flow sensor wiring
The NHS got their own in house tech that sevice them and get checked every 6 weeks and if stuff its wrong they repair it with genuine parts
Clean, tidy over a morning and list it up as is.
I'd be interested to see what it would cost to restore to a presentable standard. Maybe price it up and decide if it's worth it.
Think this is one to let go, can see it being more trouble than it’s worth, and don’t really think there’s much money to be made,
It’s one of those that can bite you in the arse,
Keep up with your really interesting content, well done
I would be interested to see it fixed and looking good. Some of the faults could be cheap easy fixes :)
Give it a quick spiv up and pass it on down the line grab a little profit and saves lots of little jobs for not a decent return
I have one for sale right now, 171k, mint condition compared to this, part history as service book was misplaced but can assure its always been serviced and can tell by the way the car drives. Even had an engine rebuild around 140k - asking £2300 no offers!
Flashing glow plug light could be the brake light switch. It was on the older model.
Clean it up the best you can using as little money as possible and just sell it
Not sure how much it could bring since the used car maeket in the UK is juat nuts (very cheap, here are pretty expensive).
I am with the majority on here - clean it up, fix minor stuff provided it is at minimal cost and dump it. No fun working on a shed tbh
Hey buddy as everyone is saying and I agree with them clean it up and sell it on as quick as you can !
Probably had all the good parts taken off it before it was sent to auction. The fleet guys ain't stupid.
Throw in a 4x4 drive train , upgrade turbo, cold intake, tune and make it a great sleeper
Bought it for £4k in 2018 and spent £3k rebuilding the engine 😭
That tdi is an absolute mess. Youd almost be better off breaking it, but spares and repairs would be best bet as youll get 1-2k as its a facelift.
10:10 isn't that brake disc/pad binding? Or is that normal? My car does it - was thinking it may need attention.
It's definitely binding Skoda did a check on mine had the same issue. Brake caliper sticking
Current car situation secondhand car market is through the roof but on a good day is probably £1500quid £1895 max but with the secondhand car market situation and van market should I say as well the Sky is the limit
Just give good clean, touchup paint, repair front bumper and sell. Can't wait for Audi update! Cheers from South Africa.
Thanks!
