@@davejohnson3822 Dumb comparison. Most native speakers of a language probably can't hold an extremely technical, business conversation in their own language, that doesn't imply they possess poor vocabulary or that their proficiency is dependant on a specific job or skill. I'm pretty sure you can't explain in your native language the technical subtleties of say, how bricks are stacked efficiently, what a surgeon does when they cut you open and perform a heart transplant. Very dumb comparison. Most people are ignorant regardless of the languages they speak.
Dane here. I could understand the danish bit perfectly, although there were a few hiccups with the grammar. And he's absolutely right. The hardest part about danish is by far the pronunciation. Prince Henrik of Denmark was french but was Prince of Denmark for over 50 years. He never learned the pronounciation without a thick accent, which danes always made fun of. It IS HARD! So kudos to you Wouter!
Wow, I immediately started smiling when you spoke Swedish, that was very good man. The pronunciation is good and you even developed some grammar which is quite tricky in our language. I am truly fascinated by your skills in different languages, aim for the sky!
I very recently started Swedish and my main issue is being able to remember en vs ett (I've gotten so many questions wrong cus I couldn't remember if apelsin and citron are both en or just apelsin...not helped by the fact that I cannot see myself talking about lemons regularly) and how nouns inflect. Example from earlier today: Tjej, well MT is no good here because it likes to default to Flicka, and I didn't know any site that listed how to say: the plural, the "the" form and the "the" form's plural. I'm sure there is some logic but I've not picked it up by doing the bare minimum of 2 daily lessons on Duolingo. Will say though, VERY cool language (And I adore the word for spider, Jag tycker om spindeln.)
@@TheGreatBackUpVIDEOS Don't worry too much about en/ett, for kids born in sweden it comes naturally with years of training. Most people who didnt grow up here will be mistaking en/ett every now and then and with time they learn. In fact, as a swede, i had to google when to use en/ett as i don't know any logic behind it. It's just natural.... About the plural form(s) we dont use another word prior to the actual word such as (the) girl. We bend the actual word instead. one/En flick(a), two/två flick(or), the/they/them = flick(orna) the girls (thing) flick(ornas)..... man/män/männen,männens, apelsin, apelsinen, apelsinerna, apelsinernas, fisk, fisken, fiskarna, fiskens, fiskarnas etc :D you can find me at discord with the same nickname as here if you want to

@KANIMEYT I suppose he has an advantage, but as a native Afrikaans speaker I can confirm that they're really quite different (Dutch and Afrikaans). Lexically they're 95% similar, but grammatically they're different and Afrikaans is a mixture of Dutch, Portuguese, Khoisan languages, even Indonesian and English and other languages to a lesser extent, so it's mostly not mutually intelligible. There are also A LOT of words that are spelt and pronounced the same but have completely different meanings in the respective languages.
@@zulawoo Where I'm from in South Africa (South-West), most people speak with an accent similar to his here. The northerners speak with a "round" pronunciation of vowel sounds whereas us southerners pronounce them sharply. In the south we also tend to leave out letter in pronounciation (e.g. The way he pronounced "Ons" as "Os" or "Nooit' as "Nooi"). The northerners enunciate the "R" sound a lot as well, they really roll it out. We don't do that in the south.

I believe the Danes are like the French of Scandinavia - they elide a lot of consonants. A Danish friend once told me that Norwegian is probably the best Nordic language to learn, as it is sort of halfway between Danish and Swedish. Swedish may be the hardest one to learn (Icelandic is off the chart - quite similar to old Norse, I believe).

Afrikaans separated from Dutch about 400 years ago, and then both languages continued to evolve. Wouter has added even more languages since this video was made. He now speaks several Indian languages too, which is not easy. An artist and polyglot! A true Renaissance man! I've learned tiny amounts of several languages (Polish, Dutch, Greek, Irish, Japanese, Hawaiian) and a slightly higher level in a few other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian). It is such a beautiful challenge, and I've been inspired by this conversation to dig deeper, with more consistency, in a couple of those languages to really be able to identify as multilingual! I tried speaking Dutch in Amsterdam and was sorely disappointed when the person didnt understand me at all and just replied in English 😔😬😆
I don't think they didn't understand you. It's more of a cultural thing to immediately switch to English if someone doesn't comfortably speak Dutch (to the level of native language). For example in the Netherlands I would start my conversation in English if somebody looked like they aren't born here/lived here for many years.
It impressive, although I think it would be difficult for him to keep up a casual conversation in a few languages, which is why I think he tends to keep saying “I love the country, I want to learn the language”. However, he does seem to know enough to ask and learn through conversations in each language.
Fascinating. I’m over here fluent in English and have been trying to learn Spanish for over a decade. I just do not practice enough or have the immersion.
I am so happy to see a collab with Wouter! His content is definitely underrated :) You two are a couple of the best polyglots on TH-cam in actually trying to learn the languages rather than just a specific set of sentences in each :)

Well it was a bit short and probably something he’s repeated many many times. I wonder if he can really converse in French though, and not the usual hello how are you, how’s the weather stuff. His pronunciation needs work though. For example he said « plus de temps » and « plus de choses » incorrectly. It’s plusss not plu.

It's been two years since this interview with Wouter, but I just came upon it this evening (I also recently found Xiaoma about a month ago). As I was listening to Wouter go through each of the languages, the ones that I know well enough that he spoke (Spanish, French, German, Italian), I was able to understand a majority of what he was saying. Just being able to listen and understand what is being said, is letting me know all my studying and practicing is paying off! 😊I literally just started to learn Russian and Chinese this past week, and also am getting more serious with my Lakota and Sindarin (just because it's a beautiful sounding language, and it's fun to learn!). I also have to learn Aramaic since I am a serious Bible student, and just finished what amounts to two years worth of Hebrew and Greek (crammed into a year's worth of schooling!), so now I can start concentrating on newer languages like those mentioned. I also learned three years of Latin (for my Bachelor's) a few years ago, which helps now even more while going through my biblical studies. I am so encouraged by both you, Xiaoma, and Wouter, and am thankful that you both share with all of us, videos like this. It's helpful and gives us all that extra "push" we need to continue learning more languages, but also to get better with the ones already learned. Love you both!🥰
I can hear his strong accent in Mandarin and very strong in Thai, but there's not many "internet polyglots" who have both breadth of many languages, and include multiple tonal languages. So kudos to you Wouter!
His Swedish was basically perfect, of course he has an accent but I honestly couldn't hear more than 1-2 grammatical errors. Extremely impressive.

Prince Henrik was French ?
Also in English you instantly hear he's Dutch haha

His Mandarin sounded fluent to me but his Thai sounded more rudimentary. Both are way beyond my level. I'd like to see him in conversation with another Thai speaker such as Paddy or Stu Jay Raj or some Thai youtuber (-:
