  • Today I’m chatting with @WouterCorduwener, a Dutch guy who has conversational ability in 20 to 30 languages. There’s nothing fake here - he’s dedicated his life to getting really good at multiple languages and is a true hyperpolyglot. Now he’ll be the first to admit that he isn’t fluent in all of these languages, but he does have a genuine basic conversational ability in at least 23 languages and more advanced conversational ability (or fluency) in at least 6 languages. He’s a really impressive guy and I hope you enjoy our conversation!
    Here’s a list, in order, of the languages he speaks in our interview: English, Mandarin, Italian, Portuguese, French, Thai, German, Korean, Tagalog, Hiligaynon, Dutch, Afrikaans, Spanish, Catalan, Vietnamese, Russian, Swedish, Danish, Jamaican Creole, Buryat, Japanese, and Greek. He also speaks Ukrainian, Hindi, Arabic, Farsi, Indonesian, Hebrew, and Turkish but forgot to speak those here.

      I think Xioma only really speaks about 4 or 5 to any level really - Mandarin, Cantonese, Fuzhounese, Spanish and maybe another Chinese language? Everything else he's spoken online is more like after a bit of intensive training, which he doesn't speak outside of his vids (like french, wolof, Italian, the american language etc). They're both great polyglots, but approach it in different ways, and Wouter's way is definitely more about quantity.

      def the most impressive thing. My girlfriend is 100% proffesionally bi-lingual in English and Mandarin but switching for her takes a few moments to "get in the mind space". She told me its like a different personality in a way. And she's been bilingual her entire life.

    • @olliemartinelli4034
      @olliemartinelli4034 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tbh I have been bilingual (English and Italian) my whole life and the switching to me is very natural. Like the moment anyone speaks to me in English or Italian I can basically instantly reply with no issues or mixing up the languages. Ig it’s down to individual experience because I’m my household my dad only spoke to me in Italian and my mum only in english so for example at the dinner table the switch between languages was and is always continuous. Chinese and English are also two very different language compared to English and Italian but who knows it’s interesting

      I very recently started Swedish and my main issue is being able to remember en vs ett (I've gotten so many questions wrong cus I couldn't remember if apelsin and citron are both en or just apelsin...not helped by the fact that I cannot see myself talking about lemons regularly) and how nouns inflect.
      Example from earlier today: Tjej, well MT is no good here because it likes to default to Flicka, and I didn't know any site that listed how to say: the plural, the "the" form and the "the" form's plural.
      I'm sure there is some logic but I've not picked it up by doing the bare minimum of 2 daily lessons on Duolingo.
      Will say though, VERY cool language (And I adore the word for spider, Jag tycker om spindeln.)

      @@TheGreatBackUpVIDEOS Don't worry too much about en/ett, for kids born in sweden it comes naturally with years of training. Most people who didnt grow up here will be mistaking en/ett every now and then and with time they learn. In fact, as a swede, i had to google when to use en/ett as i don't know any logic behind it. It's just natural.... About the plural form(s) we dont use another word prior to the actual word such as (the) girl. We bend the actual word instead. one/En flick(a), two/två flick(or), the/they/them = flick(orna) the girls (thing) flick(ornas)..... man/män/männen,männens, apelsin,apelsinen,apelsinerna,apelsinernas, fisk,fisken,fiskarna,fiskens,fiskarnas etc :D you can find me at discord with the same nickname as here if you want to

      I suggest you start with basic vocabulary first, then worry about grammar after you have mastered at least 500 basic words. Listen to a native speaker pronounce the words too.
      If you can then watch children's cartoons or simple shows in the language, that'll help you absorb it quickly.

But I knew, or we knew that you want to say "ikinagagalak kong makilala ka" ( nice to meet you ). Your danish actually sounds more like a combo of Danish and Norwegian. Swedish was with a heavy accent but way better than my dutch :) Keep it up and if you struggle with the Danish pronounsiation, try Norwegian, alot easier to get the pronounsiation but still very simular to Danish. Norwegian and Danish is very close , we have more or less the same written language, but the pronounsiation in Danish is really hard for most people . I'm a native Norwegian speaker and I have no problem understanding Danish but speaking it is really tough. I'm Really impressed overall :)

    An artist and polyglot! A true Renaissance man!
    I've learned tiny amounts of several languages (Polish, Dutch, Greek, Irish, Japanese, Hawaiian) and a slightly higher level in a few other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian). It is such a beautiful challenge, and I've been inspired by this conversation to dig deeper, with more consistency, in a couple of those languages to really be able to identify as multilingual!
    I tried speaking Dutch in Amsterdam and was sorely disappointed when the person didnt understand me at all and just replied in English 😔😬😆

    • @Dennis-ed4ye
      @Dennis-ed4ye 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think they didn't understand you. It's more of a cultural thing to immediately switch to English if someone doesn't comfortably speak Dutch (to the level of native language). For example in the Netherlands I would start my conversation in English if somebody looked like they aren't born here/lived here for many years.

    It's been two years since this interview with Wouter, but I just came upon it this evening (I also recently found Xiaoma about a month ago). As I was listening to Wouter go through each of the languages, the ones that I know well enough that he spoke (Spanish, French, German, Italian), I was able to understand a majority of what he was saying. Just being able to listen and understand what is being said, is letting me know all my studying and practicing is paying off! 😊I literally just started to learn Russian and Chinese this past week, and also am getting more serious with my Lakota and Sindarin (just because it's a beautiful sounding language, and it's fun to learn!). I also have to learn Aramaic since I am a serious Bible student, and just finished what amounts to two years worth of Hebrew and Greek (crammed into a year's worth of schooling!), so now I can start concentrating on newer languages like those mentioned. I also learned three years of Latin (for my Bachelor's) a few years ago, which helps now even more while going through my biblical studies. I am so encouraged by both you, Xiaoma, and Wouter, and am thankful that you both share with all of us, videos like this. It's helpful and gives us all that extra "push" we need to continue learning more languages, but also to get better with the ones already learned. Love you both!🥰

    You are both my language heroes! I only speak a few but this is absolutely inspiring. Wouter's point about losing the fear of being judged is instrumental in learning any language, specially English. My dad never lost the fear of being mocked and because of it he never got to really learn English the way he would have wanted to. Keep creating these videos and thank you!

  • @musikh2698

    Wouter is an incredible guy. He's so Nice, truly humble. He deeply cares about languages. He's always positive and encouraging others!
    I'm a person who can't learn fast enough to speak other languages because I'm scared of being told that I have a big accent or because I mix up the grammar. I feel like there's a lot of pressure around speaking a different language than your mother tongue cause there will always be someone to judge. Like it's a competition or something. But truly, it's the basics of communication and human connections. Even though he's not "perfect" in every languages, he's freaking AMAZING. And switching from one language to the other this fast is ssooooo impressive (that's on another level). And he really inspires me to just get out there and start speaking.
    I personally LOVE it when someone is speaking my language. If there are some words they don't know, I help them. I don't tell them it's bad.
    I see many harsh comments of people "knowing better" so I wanted to state my point of view.
    Anyways, great video, very impressive♡

    What I admire of Wouter is that he goes for it, either if he is fluent or just starting a new language, he goes for it, he speaks with people, some times you don't need much to make friends and get a smile 😊
