I explored the markets, tried local foods, and ordered in pubs, all in the ancient Welsh language. Welsh was actually suppressed for many years and so most people in the country of Wales which is part of the United Kingdom do not actually speak it very well, but quite a few do and there’s been a revival movement to bring it back with street signs all over Wales in the language, so I thought it might be fun to see what locals would think of an American tourist speaking their ancestral language!

WELSH!?!?!? oh my gosh i’ve been waiting for this day to come!!!!! so glad you’ve decided to learn welsh, it’s so appreciated by our little community when someone takes the time out of their day to use welsh instead.. i don’t speak welsh although i am welsh, but whenever someone even says “diolch” instead of “thank you” i’m happy enough

@@sneer0101i went to an english speaking school and i’m still currently in education. i haven’t had the time to learn welsh outside of the basics that you learn in GCSE. i can speak it to a certain degree but it’s difficult 😅 once i leave further education i definitely want to learn it though!!!
@@sneer0101also, i know many people who speak welsh but still use english!!! wales is sadly a majority english speaking country, so it’s hard to learn the language as you don’t necessarily have the environment to get used to it

As a Welsh man living in Wales and who can speak fluent welsh, I understood everything you said in welsh. Some annunciation was off but that's to be expected. Just sound it confidently because you sounded shy but you did wonderful. Most speakers in wales are west Wales and North Wales. I'd say the welsh I heard from you would be to the standard of a 7 or 8 year old learning in school. More than competent to get by with. Great job! Well done! Ardderchog!

I remember as a child being on holiday in Brittany (France) with my Welsh speaking grandmother, she managed to converse fluidly and effortlessly with an elderly French lady who spoke Breton, the two languages were close enough that they could easily understand each other.
Yes, Bretton is very similar to Welsh. Unfortunately, it sounds like south welsh though🤮
I have a few words of Gaeilge Uladh (Ulster Irish) from my childhood, one day my fiancée said something in Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) her grandparents used to say and it was uncanny how it sounded so familiar and was intelligible. I understand there are cool inter-celtic festivals these days focused on music and language culture.

As a Welsh person from the North, it's embarrassing to see how little our language is understood/spoken by our own people. My Welsh is not so great these days but I do make the effort, especially when in Welsh-speaking areas. It's humbling to see some dude from New York speaking better Welsh than the natives. Well done Ari, you crushed this one!
It is a shame, yes. Grew up in North Wales as an English person, (born in England to English parents), and it always struck me as odd how there was so much passion for being Welsh yet so little effort to learn it. It's 2023, there's literally no excuses anymore, you can learn on dozens of platforms and go to classes, but not many do. And they all speak English, support English football teams, love Only Fools and Horses....and hate the English! Baffling. Imagine I lived in England, supported Swansea, spoke Welsh and loved Pobl y Cwm and absolutely hated the Welsh? 😂
To be fair he's in Cardiff, I've been in Cardiff 18 years and the teaching is certainly improving for the newer generation but for the most part only a small amount of people can speak it in the Capital. But, I went to college in Pencoed (bout 25 minute drive outside Cardiff) and a larger amount of people speak it there. It's really just within the capital that not many speak it, but like I say it is improving slowly. Really he should have gone elsewhere but Cardiff
Depending whether you use NAS or Census results; Approx 40,000 - 94,000 people speak Welsh in Cardiff. Bear in mind the entire pop of Gwynedd is 117,000.
@@sjones2345 Unsure what you're suggesting given that 74.2% of the population of Gwynedd is Welsh-speaking, versus 12.2% in Cardiff.
@damagedheather I'm not really suggesting anything other than in terms of numbers there are a lot more Welsh speakers in Cardiff than people think.
I honestly believe by learning languages so humbly and always eating local food you have embraced and embodied the message Anthony Bourdain was trying to teach the world, i think he would be proud

That's a good comparison. Anthony Bourdain was a hero of mine, and I NEVER really care when some celebrity dies that I've never met before. But I literally broke down to tears when I heard not just that he died, but how he died. You never really know what people are going through.

I love how Xiaoma is recognized by people almost anywhere he travels and they're so happy to meet him. This man never fails to make my day brighter, and he is obviously doing the same for millions of others. Ari gives me hope for humanity.
I hope this video brings to light what a shame it is that the British government suppressed this language nearly out of existence. What a shame! It’s such an ancient tongue, I hope the welsh can keep their language alive!
He was in the wrong area of Wales really. In Cardiff people might learn Welsh at school but generally won’t speak it at home. Quite different up in north Wales where many speak it as their first language.
It wasn’t really much to do with the British Government, it’s more complex than that.

It's so nice to see how even the people who only know a few words were so happy to hear it from you. Wales has had to fight hard to keep its language alive. I'm not welsh but my work has a fully Welsh speaking department and offers free courses. I'd love to to learn one day.

Went to college there and they do everything in both Welsh and English and quite a few of the staff and my friends can speak Welsh! I must learn (after German)

Can't believe Xiaomanyc is speaking Welsh!! I live in North Wales in Gwynedd and the majority of us speak it here, especially in my area. It's really disheartening to see so many South Walians saying they can't speak the language, but great that you found a few! Yeah, I've noticed most the comments are North Wales and yeah I always find it rare to meet people who can't speak basic Welsh up here.

I never learned Welsh, I live just across the border. But a lot of my friends did learn it in school. I think it's admirable how much the language has been revived. It's certainly in a much better state than Irish is.
@Luuuma7 one single town? God no. Around my area, you have Porthmadog, Criccieth, Pwllheli (and the whole Llyn Peninsula), Blaenau Ffestiniog, and many more where i can guarantee the majority are Welsh speakers. Maybe if you go to the North Coast, like Bangor, it might not be the majority that speaks it due to there being English Schools, a University, and further east you'll come closer to Merseyside so there'll be less Welsh prevalence there. But there's definitely more than just one town in Gwynedd that is more dominantly Welsh speaking😋

Not often we here that from English lads, appreciate you being so sound. I'm welsh but work in Bristol and most the time I get shit from the English boys for being welsh so hearing an English lad giving us credit is refreshing
@@KennygsxI’m from Kent over on the south east of England, and other than the banter between the English and Welsh I’ve never heard anything real bad said about the Welsh in by 37 years on earth, I always thought the Welsh were beloved by us.
I’ve just walked around the entire Welsh Coast Path, 870 miles in 60 days- if you go to north Wales, Pembrokeshire, Anglesey, the valleys etc you’d find that a much greater percentage of people there speak Welsh. I went to Cardiff university and there were fellow students studying music for whom English was their second language behind Welsh, so it really is a completely living language

My dad's first language is Welsh, and he told me he didn't know English until he was 6.
Unfortunately, he never taught me as a child but this has given me the fuel to want to learn it!

My father came from a Welsh speaking family and they only spoke welsh at home ,and as he got older he basically forgot it .The older I got the more I wish I learn't our beautiful language.

As a fluent welsh speaker myself and the only language outside of english that i have heard you speak that i can understand being welsh, i now have a new found appreciation of your langauage skills, because i can hear that you have actually learnt it propely and are using it correctly most of the time. I had no idea how good or bad you was at the other languages because i couldnt understand. Welsh is a difficult language to learn so hats off to you! Happy you managed to find at least a few people around cardiff who speak it. A trip to the north may have meant you found more people speaking it but they baisicslly have their own dialect and a strong accent so it may have been tough to understand people

some of our call centres especially for the UKs version of the DMV is in Wales, some of the staff have a proper thick welsh accent can be a nightmare getting your driving licence sorted... lol ok maybe a little hyperbole
The trouble was, during the 70s, 80s and 90s the Cardiff school system placed a firm emphasis on learning French, "as it would be more useful, and would allow for better job prospects", so Welsh was pretty much sidelined. You also couldn't take two languages, and the French departments always seemed better funded and supplied, so for many the choice was made for us. Those that took Welsh all had the last laugh, because not only could they find decent jobs in the film, TV and entertainment industry, but French is almost useless in Northern France as they all now speak Arabic.

The lack of Welsh speakers in Cardiff is not a new thing though. It's similar in places like Flintshire and Wrexham as well
Speaking Welsh does not guarantee being made welcome in Wales. I know Welsh people who could speak fluent Welsh moving to Anglesey, they eventually sold and moved out as the locals would not accept them into the community, reason being they were not from Anglesey. Self defeating.

One of my fondest memories is speaking to a Japanese couple (the whole thing in Japanese) while interning at Canyonlands National Park back in 2018. I barely said anything, and it was incredibly simple, but I'll never forget the response of the man after I said that I didn't speak Japanese. He looked me in the eys and said "you do speak Japanese." Something so simple being so meaningful is a testament to how wonderfully powerful language learning as a part of the human experience. Thank you for always reminding me of that, Ari!
People sure seem polite and lovely in wales. Walking freely in a market and not having to worry about getting robbed is liberating.

Wales on the whole (outside of Cardiff and Swansea) is one of the safest places in Europe, the second safest place in Europe for LGBTQ+ people (Iceland being first), and rated as one of the best places in the world for solo travellers. Everyone leaves their front doors unlocked where I live, your neighbour will walk in and put your parcel on your kitchen table 😂

...never ceases to amaze me that no matter what country Ari visits to hone his skills, there are people who recognize him and want to say "hello" and get a picture! We are more interconnected than one would imagine....thanx Xiaoma...!!!
I have always found it infuriating to think of how many people around the world have been prevented and shamed from speaking their native languages...I was so happy to hear that the situation in Wales is changing and that there is an effort to promote speaking the Welsh language there. The same thing happened in Hawaii and after many years there is a large percentage of people there now who speak their language again. This was a wonderful video to watch. I hope the efforts really continue there, Welsh is a beautiful sounding language.
When my 1st wifes' son was three he needed to be in daycare so I suggested a local Chinese facility. She became angry at teaching him an Eastern language. So we settled on Spanish. (In Texas). By the time he went to school he was very proficient, by ten,fluent.
Always teach a child a second language.

Its so great to see people outside the UK learning this kind of thing. I'm not welsh but my mums grandparents were and it feels great to see someone (especially americans) understand that the Uk isn't just london and english people

The more west and/or north you go from Cardiff the more you will hear welsh spoken. Really pleasantly surprised to see you have learnt welsh, a beautiful language that has survived despite the push back against it for so long ❤
To be fair though, we have our bits here and there here in Cardiff where you will hear it a lot. I'm sitting next to a group of old ladies speaking it very well right now, and moaning about the speed of service knowing the staff doesn't understand 😂

@@crystal9243 the amusing bit of that being that (despite the frankly misleading name) I'm actually from Yorkshire. My kids speak fluent Welsh, and I speak a little, more than most with my background, and understand Welsh well. Welsh family, black sheep.

I love that you learned Welsh. My mom was born in Carmarthen and met my dad (from Brooklyn NYC) in London during the Korean War. My dad luckily was only stationed in the UK and wooed my mom and brought her back to the US. Our family joke was always the only action he saw during the war was my mother! 🏴
I'm from Wales and it's nice hearing someone from America knowing about Wales but you would as your mum is from Wales. I actually would love to go to America visit time square and go to a rodeo see the bulls bucking people off the backs. 🏴😀

@@aprill3759Id suggest to travel to one of the smaller places in America where they have less tourists, in Arizona or Wyoming for example its beautiful scenery and people are really friendly to us Brits.

Xiaoman has an amazing ear for understanding and pronouncing languages. I imagine he spends a lot of time when he’s learning these languages, and he has a real feel for what types of conversations and words are typical for interactions when learning new languages.
The number of genuine fans just saying hi and recognizing you and going about their day is so warming to see. I hope to one day see you out on your language adventure!!

As an English guy that's recently picked up Japanese and Korean and hope to learn Taiwanese Maderin, I want to learn Welsh now too to honour my late father!
I love the complete oblviousness of many who just dont realise there such a vibrant welsh language community in South Wales - theres a real assumption (as shown by the fruit seller) that its all down west and up north, but you hit the nail on the head - lots of people speak welsh in the south, its just been so battered out of us that many dont 'see the point'... well done on coming to visit and learning the language. You bumped into possibly one of the most passionate welsh speakers I know too - which is probably more luck than anything! Excellent video.
Hi mate I am the fruit seller from the video, and it's not even obliviousness, growing up in cardiff I can count the fluent welsh speakers I've met in 27years on my one hand and I've known a few ppl to go to welsh speaking high schools too and even they dont know how to speak fluently once theyve left school for a few years, it's a sad truth but it is almost dead in Cardiff (at least for my age bracket anyway) in school we had welsh lessons and were literally aloud to have a free lesson during Welsh periods if we wished and even got to avoid doing the end of year welsh exam altogether if we opted out, looking back I'd wish id learnt but alot more emphasis was put on learning French and German through my school experience in Cardiff

I will say your experience isn't unique - lots of people just don't see the thriving Welsh language and without trying to sound critical of you or anyone, but many don't make any effort to try and see it.
Here we had someone make the effort to learn enough Welsh to have a reasonable conversation and in many situations his response was 'i don't speak welsh', where as if all of us who don't speak welsh took a bit of time and effort to learn some token phrases you'd be surprised how many people do.
In regards to school, times are changing - Welsh in English medium schools is still pretty dire mind, but Welsh language education is growing in popularity and many kids are growing up speaking fluently (my own kid for example) because Welsh education has got a lot better than when we were kids 😂
Once again, sorry if I came across as having a go at you personally. Not my intention at all. And If you fancy it, give Duolingo a go. There's really good free Welsh lessons on there that would help you have really short Welsh conversations with customers in future and you might be surprised how many you've got :)

@@morganbowler-brown4703 yeh I feel like welsh is spoken amongst circles of ppl who are already brought up with it and us who werent taught it growing up jst end up left out of the loop with no clear entrance point into it and even if we do, we dont know anybody to speak regularly so it becomes like a niche hobby to have to find alot of time for and working 10hours plus a day jst becomes near impossible if you have any other interests too, I'll defo check out that duolingo tho to get some basics, thanks for the info mate👍 and no probz man I took the oblivousness thing the wrong way, it feels alot like welsh speakers often assume us non welsh speakers in wales actively dont want to know or are lazy and avoid it, but its jst literally not anywhere to be seen for us in our daily life cos nobody speaks welsh around you if you arent already within those circles to begin with

When I lived in Wales my house mate was a Welsh speaker. It is super useful when booking tickets on the phone. Or getting through to call centres. When you select the Welsh option you get connected straight away
It always shocks me how speaking someone's language seems to instantly remove cultural barriers, even in relatively similar ones. Your videos always fill me with joy and hope. Keep up the awesome work!

Just tagging onto the comment :) I went to a Welsh primary and secondary school, Welsh was a mandatory subject just like you guys (and us) do English Lit and Lang, we also did Welsh Lit and Lang for GCSEs etc we even got detentions for getting caught speaking English in the corridors - that's how much they were trying to save the language/ boost it 😅 (this was 2007-2014, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's still the same)

This fills me with joy - as a non-welsh speaking Welshman living in England. Planning to learn when I retire though - which hopefully isn't too far away.
I got so excited seeing that you were doing Welsh this time. I used to be semi fluent as a child, but during my teenage years my use of the language diminished due to horrendous teachers in school. You made such a fantastic effort with people, and those that spoke with you were so passionate about it. I have tried with my eldest daughter to learn Welsh in my 30s, and this has given me some inspiration to try my best to make more of an effort with it. The representation you showed for how our language was beaten out of us with showing about the welsh knot was really great too. Thank you Ari =] Hope you enjoyed your time in Wales. Welsh is an extremely unique and ancient language and it sounds so cool! Most of my ancestry is Welsh so I'm glad you showcased it.

It is alive, it's not broadly spoken around Cardiff/the urban south but there are plenty of first language speakers and people who are educated in Welsh in the West and North of the nation :)
In the North the language is very alive, but down south especially in Cardiff, Newport, Swansea etc. the language is rarely spoken by the everyday people.

I love Wales! I have family that lives near the Wales/England border and when I visit them, I love seeing the Welsh language on all the signs around North Wales
I have family which originates from Wales, in the north around Clwyd and Northop, my father was from Liverpool, and it's his side of the family, his sisters Eileen and Rosemary, and his mother Mary, which stems back into the country. I'm learning Welsh so I can go back through some of the older family records and see how many more people I can find for our family tree!

@@YourPalHDee I've visited them a few times over the years. They live near Chester but we've driven through North Wales each time I go. I remember going to Conwy Castle, Llandudno, Snowdonia and Aberystwyth (hopefully I spelled that correctly). Lots of nice hiking places and beautiful scenery.
I have family from Northop they owned the post office, actually still do, that side of the family only learnt Welsh as a second language in primary school

What I loved most in this video is that little moment where you spoke manderin to ask them to take a photo of you, thats what I love seeing about langauge learning speaking other languages in a country that both of you are not native to. Learning languages looks so cool and I have been trying, hopefully I can get to a good point with it some day!

In the 1500s, Henry VIII banned the Welsh language and ruled that the official language to be spoken in Wales should be English because Wales was under English rule. The Welsh Language act of 1967 changed this in an attempt to bring the language back to the Welsh people. Cymru and byth! 🏴

Just a word of advice grammatically: the adjective comes after the noun in most cases. One main exception is hen (old)
Ari, I love that you're not embarrassed at all to try! I tried to learn Irish Gaelic about 25 years ago. In the time it took to get from Australia to Ireland, I'd forgotten all I'd learnt except for one word - slainte! It was all I needed, really 😀 Come here to Australia and learn our language!
This a little late to the table but thank you so much for learning and speaking Welsh. My Nana was born in Cardiff but my great grandmother was alive when Welsh was suppressed. I can’t imagine not being allowed to speak your own language. I went to Wales with my Mom and our driver was so happy to go to all these places with us and speak Welsh wherever we went.
