    Thank you, this “Pistol Squat” makes knees really, really strong! Normal walking on the street feels like 15 years younger than the real age.

    I have never tried a pistol squat in my life until today. My sports physio said I should do some to strengthen my glutes so I found your beginners guide really helpful. So I am starting at the beginning, sitting on a chair and moving off, but I can't wait to move to the assisted pistol squat and totally amaze my PT when she suggests I put pistol squats into my routine and I show her a perfect one! OMG that would be priceless! Thank you.

  • @GunnerTaft
    @GunnerTaft 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Another is a raised heel pistol squat. This helps with developing the strength and balance when you may have mobility issues. Also, for stretching, you want to do a soleus stretch, a.k.a. bent leg calf stretch, since that is the muscle that will hinder your pistols as well.

  • @fracklo
    @fracklo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I've been doing normal deep squats using an 8kg dumbell for 2 months (I do it every wednesday)
    I looked for another challenge, and I came up with this. I tried the chair method but I dont feel comfortable with it, so I tried the stair method yesterday (3 reps each side)
    The next day (today), my leg is surprisingly not that sore, so I tried the stair method but only with the fingers. I was able to do it, so I tried the free hand pistol squat without any assistance.
    I did it, I FREAKING DID IT. Form may be a little shaky, but I was able to do 3 proper pistol squads (2 on my left leg, and only 1 on my right leg since my leg finally got tired from yesterdays assisted pistol squad) :DD I couldnt do it anymore, got too tired xD
    I will continue training, and hopefully next year I can do it using dumbells 😁
    Thank you so much for the video man! Cheers

I could not do that squat. I do a full squat all the time at work when I'm cleaning showers and lower cabinets, but this shit is hard! But when I deadlifted 405lbs for the first time, god damn, I can't even describe the feeling. Perhaps if I ever manage to progress to much more advanced bodyweight movements (e.g. one arm pull ups or front levers) I'll feel a greater satisfaction.

      He ate tons and tons of potatoes along with lots and lots of sleep. He said within 4 months of that routine (trading everything on his tray for more potatoes, which isn't hard to do) he did that along with regular push ups, squats (as much as he could do each leg single) and heavy curls with heavy bench press. It still amazes me still that he pulled this off on demand whenever I asked him to.

I know there's widespread carbophobia and even doctors recommend avoiding carbs but it's all nonsense, and starches are some of the best carbs around, but all are good, even table sugar. take a look at this from the one and only Dr John McDougall www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2009nl/feb/starch.htm

    Nice video! I really like the stretch at the end, as it isn't just for the ankle but for a lot more and it is an active stretch.
    I have problems squatting and first thought that it would be because of my ankles, as I couldn't get my heels on the ground, but after a long time, I realised that it was my hip mobility. I have problems sitting on the floor with outstreched legs and that translates into not being able to squat properly (knees too far form the chest).

    Is the pistol squat a work-out exercise, or it is just a show-off thing? I work out in the park and do 75 pistol squats on each leg (3x25 with 10 min pause in between) - I hold the rail with one hand to keep the balance. Today, some guy told me that I should stop it, because I am hurting my body. But I have been doing it once a week for more than a year and I never had any problems. What do you think?

    I think I have the required strength but I was just wondering does the position of the other leg matter as long as is doesn't touch the ground?

    I wonder what muscles are used coming up from a pistol squat. I can raise myself up but can't do the actual squat. Great video!

    Great if you can manage but the difficulty may result in many just giving up. Single leg half squats while using one chair either side for balance will give you an amazing burn, as will standing on one leg with it slightly bent. The added strength then may help you progress to the pistol squats later. I admire those he can do these but there not easy

    Once in a blue moon I get discomfort on ankles when doing daily things like driving for too long or getting up from sitting on the floor. Was wondering what to keep in mind to prevent possible future discomfort while learning and practicing pistol squats.

    Will you guys do a tutorial on beginner progression steps to do flips. I watched many tutorials but it didn't help me. I tried to do them but the fear of falling down and breaking my bones prevent me from doing the move. Pls help tappbrothers.

    Hi, thanks for this this video, it was very helpful. I started of with my chair support progressions and I notice my free leg is cramping in the quad region. I also face the same incident while performing L-sits. If you can make a video on this, it will be really great.

    Another option that seems pretty good, which I saw in a ladies old and very obscure YT video (had like 17 views): use some therabands instead of a post at the assisted progression stage.

    My english is not good so...
    Una cosa que deberían decir es sobre el ángulo para colocar el pie, es decir si es a 7 u 8 grados o más, veo en el video que colocaste el pie a unos 8º o más de abertura para hacer el pistol squat y nadie menciona esto.
    Thanks for show us the progressions.

    Can you, or even should you, attempt to learn this if you've had surgery for an inguinal hernia? Will this much stress raise the risk getting another such hernia?? Thanks.

    I wanna try this because i need to squat without pressure on my spine, so i figured i should put a dumbbell on my extended leg, or i cod try squatting with a dip belt.
    And i realized that it's really hard even without a dumbbell.
