  • Had a set of AT-12 speakers in need of new foam. After pulling off the old foam I noticed something wasn't quite right. The spiders on both woofers were in new of new spiders as well as they were stretched right out and no letting the woofers function properly. So I ordered new spiders as well as new foam and got to work on the basically full rebuild of these woofers. When finished they turned out great and sound amazing, as good as new.

    Just came over from previous-linked assessment video to observe. Wow. Just EXCELLENT work. Have never seen just a spider repair while preserving cones. Really great, non-destructive approach. Also, the non-destructive dust cap removal technique, just wow. (I'm an every-time shimmer, too. Good on you.) Have to say, your Gandhi-level patience is utterly commendable. Outstanding work and work ethic. It's clear you genuinely CARE about these drivers when you do them. THANK you for showing how it can be done this way.

      Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Some of these CV cones are not replaceable, even when they are it is always nice to keep everything as original as possible. Usually the only time I replace the cone is when it when it's damaged beyond repair.

    Man! Thank you for you videos! I used this video to get ready to do a set of AT-12 that I have had sitting in storage since 2006! I've never re-coned a set of speakers before. Job went great, they sound awesome!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    One suggestion about lining up the spider to the voice coil. Don't glue all around at this point... just line it up... then place 5 or 6 spaced out spots of the glue and let it cure. Then take the woofer out, and you can glue all around it much easier now that it's held in place = much less messy!
    (also with this method you can stand the woofer on it's side/edge (prop up a piece of 2x4 under the magnet) so that you are essentially dripping the glue down onto the voice/coil spider edge from above it.... then the glue won't drip into the spider this way.)
    And on woofers without "ridge lines" on the cone to help you center the dust caps. You can use a "compass" with a pencil to draw a line to know where to set the dustcap... place a clean cut circle piece of wood (that just fits inside the voicecoil on the magnet - thicker peice works better here so the top of the circle is about flush with the top of the coil. Then stick the compass into this wood and use it as a "center" to draw your line with the compass on the cone... this will be where you drop the glue on the cone.
    Also the "gasket" or "beauty ring" is technically a "speaker or foam guard" which prevents the foams from getting pushed/crushed in if the speaker falls over or something pushes against it. Essentially if those were not there and the speaker was to lay flat on a surface the foams could push in so far as the press the voice coil into the back of the magnet with the weight of the entire box = damaging the end of the voice coil or ripping the voice coil off the spider or cone.

    when i saw you glue on the spider while you had it all on the driver i was getting flashback when i tryed to glue back on a spider they was just losen. the glue went down under and got it stuck.
    next time buy a cheap engraving machine with sand papir on. you can get the spider off clean. and then put on the new one easy. its importent that the spider is at the right hight. if you want the woofer to move as it should. and you can glue on both sides without glueing while its on the chassis.

    I saw a nice trick for installing the dustcaps. If you make a loop out of masking tape and stick it to the dustcap, it becomes a removable handle that is alot easier to manipulate into place. Once its in place just remove the tape loop and done. Hope someone finds that as useful as i did.

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup I use that method a lot. The AT series is the easiest woofers to properly place the dust cap because of the ribbed cones.

    I have a question can you paint the con a deferent color and what cane of paint can I use .?

  • @TheJTcreate
    @TheJTcreate ปีที่แล้ว

    Try acetone to remove your dust cap next time instead of the heat gun. Give it a few minutes to soak. Your cone needs a little touch up with flat black paint anyway to refresh it. You're right. Heat gun is too risky.

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I try not to use liquids as much as possible. I have seen cones warp because of it. I have used a lacquer thinner in the past and still do but very small amounts. If the proper glue has been used a heat gun softens the glue up enough to remove or make adjustments even on the foam to re center the voice coil. As for covering the cone I don't like doing that. Can add mass to.the cone changing its parameters.

    I have tried to recone a L121-4 woofer and have had a heck of a time. I have wasted two cones so far - my problem is how to keep the spider straight AND how to set the height of the coil in the basket.
    Can you recommend any techniques or suggestions

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With most recone kits they provide shims that you put in the gap between voice coil and pole. That will keep the coil centered. The coil height needs to match the original which is best to make note of where the original one sat. If already pulled apart without knowing the original height of the coil, the windings usually sit out of the gap about a 1/4".

    • @elvispresley2695
      @elvispresley2695 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SavingVegas thanks for the reply - I think I understand and used the shims to keep it centered but the height is where I am not sure how to gauge properly. my first attempt I could hear distortion at low volumes that went away after I turned it up. well will attempt a third time believe I will watch my coil height based on a 1/4 inch basis this time.
      Really love watching - Cerwins where my first real pair of speakers (early 80's)... wish I still had that pair!
      thanks again!

    What is your opinion of simply speakers rebuild kits? Thanks in advance

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be perfectly honest I have found there is a lot of inconsistencies with rebuild kits from all companies I have used. I'm not 100% sure buy I assume that most of them get there parts from the same supplier. I purchased a recone kit for a VSW-12 from Simply Speakers and everything fit perfectly and came with detailed instructions with pictures. My ears couldn't tell the difference between the reconed woofer and the original so I was very satisfied with it. I have though had some issues with some of their foam kits. Variations in color and texture also size.

  • @abortretryfail9350
    @abortretryfail9350 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey, I know this is an old vid, but just got my kit to recone some CV VS-120s, but they seem to only need the foam replaced now I'm really looking at em, everything else seems fine, the red foam's just disintegrated, (always lived in places where I can't _really_ give these things a workout without noise complaints, so it isn't like they've been worn out, they're just old) so my question is this, should I just refoam them and keep the cones etc original, just save the new cones/coils for a rainy day, or should I just replace all of it since I have new?

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would definitely just replace the foam, doing a complete recone is only necessary when you have a damaged voice coil or cone. Always good when you can keep the original cones, if you end up wearing out the spiders you can just replace those like in this video and keep the OG voice coil and cone if still in good shape.

    • @abortretryfail9350
      @abortretryfail9350 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SavingVegas Awesome, that's what I'll do then, seems like that will save me a lot of trouble, also lower possibility I'll screw it up, never done it, first time for everything though. When I first saw the foam had disintegrated, I didn't even know it could be done, so I'm pretty happy anyway. 😄
      Thanks a lot for the reply!

      Yes the black surrounds are factory. Those are vintage pro audio style woofers most commonly used in bass bins I believe. Value would be hard to tell, depending on the market in your area.

      @SavingVegas  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some other places like Speaker Exchange, Springfield Speaker and other ones as well I can't think of the names. None of these places will have a proper ribbed cones like the originals. There is a guy (Jessie Simmons) who sells his own foam surrounds and recone kits among other speaker parts as well. He sells on Ebay and works out of his home I believe. He is highly recommended among most CV enthusiasts and said to have great customer service, very knowledgeable and specializes in Cerwin Vega. He is the only one with the proper ribbed AT recone kits. www.ebay.com/sch/brew..city..audio/m.html Here is a link to his seller info on Ebay.
