How To Fix a Woofer With Voice Coil Rub

  • So you just replaced the foam surrounds on your woofer and you hook it up and hear that awful scraping sound. That sound is the inside of your voice coil rubbing on the magnet pole. If you already have let the glue fully cure this can only mean one thing, you have to cut it out and re order another set of foams. In some cases not all of them you can fix the problem without spending a dime. I take this botched re-coned woofer and make it sound great again.

    Little late seeing this vid but it was clearly apparent the surround was less than centered lol. If you go back and watch the beginning of this video. The gluing of your surround was the issue. Thanks for your vids!

    I would suggest screwing the driver into a flat undeformed box before fixing potential rattles.
    With pressed steel baskets they can be very prone to deformation. I have experienced this when speakers are unevenly torqued on to soft gaskets.

      That's an excellent point. If there's very little tolerance for the coil gap, I can see how that could affect it. I installed this woofer into a few different cabinets prior to this repair. The first was the original 211 cabinet, in which the woofer actually gets mounted from the inside, and the other was in a VS-120 cabinet. Either way, the coil rub was the same.

    Was hoping for a new vid. Good save. Nobody is perfect. I always center the voice coil with a battery or my bench power supply when laying down the inside with normal polarity (out) and when setting the outside reverse polarity(in). I dont use clamps. I baby sit them until set. As soon as they set I start play music at low low volume overnight.
    I finished my at12s. They are loud. Good for blues music. They don't compete with my ns-690's or my ess speakers, but they do what they do very well. I sort of like them for live recordings. I found the surrounds needed a couple days to work themselves to maximum potential. I actually ran them for 48 hours straight at medium low volume. The difference was night and day after breaking them in.

      The Yamaha NS-690's are great speakers. I had a set of the tri amp versions for a little while but sold them just because I got a hard to turn down offer for them.

    Hello, great video!. I was given a pair of CV R123 speakers that I had started to rebuild the crossovers on only to discover that the woofers had been replaced with Radio Shack woofers at some point. I'd like to restore them back to factory specs, but finding 122w4 or 122s4 woofers in any condition is proving next to impossible. I'd appreciate it if you could offer some suggestions on either where to get hold of the original woofers, any condition, or other 12" CV woofers that would work as replacements. Thanks!!

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The RadioShack replacement woofers are pretty common to find in the older CV speakers it seems. A low cost replacement woofer seems like the best option for people who are unaware that replacing the foam surrounds is fairly cheap and easy to do. The reason that lots of the factory woofers have been tossed in the trash unfortunately.
      Your not wrong, finding somr 122S4 or 122W4 woofers may not be easy but they do pop up every once in a while. Both of which can be reconed as the proper 122S4 4 ohm woofer. If you ever do come across a set and they need to be reconed Brew City Audio LLC is the place to get the proper kit. Unfortunately I can't help you much on where to find some other then always checking Ebay and any other places for a pair to come up. Good luck I hope you end up getting some and get them rocking again.

    Great channel! I picked up a set of DX7 last week, so I’m new at fixing audio stuff. These speakers haven’t had the best life hope to get them going. Tweeters and 12s work, but neither one of the 6 inch mids work. They look good shape and both stroke with a 9v. Would both crossovers be bad on the mids? Common with DX series?. Looking forward to watching old videos and learning about these speaker systems. Thank you for your work.

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The crossover is most likely the culprit. If they were abused and had gobs of power thrown at them for extended periods of time it is possible it could have overheated a component in the xover causing loss of signal to the mids.

    Also cerwin Vega speakers are definitely efficient and do not need 400 watts of power the problem is the larger drivers are 4 ohm speakers that dip below that which does present an issue with low power amps that weren’t designed for it,

    Just refoamed a pair of 10s in an RE25 set. I got the foams from Santon audio in Toronto. I didn't shim, but it seemed to work great until the gasket ring went back on and the oversized curl on the foams was pushed by the ring on the top so I get a tad of buzz when I really push them. Is there a foam with a smaller curl to avoid contact with the gasket? TIA! Great channel!!!!

      Problem with the products from most places is they are made to be a one size fits all. Which in most cases isn't a problem but CV made many changes along the way and weren't very consistent. Brew City Audio has excellent products specializing in Cerwin Vega foam kits, recone kits and more. He sells on Ebay and customer service is by far the best as well as his products. Just look up Brew City Audio in sellers on Ebay. It's the only place I get my parts from.

  • @CH3_Productions

    I think I need to try this on a set of Re-25 that I picked up today. My questions is the cabinet says they are 6 ohm but I checked the woofers and they measured at 4. Speaker Exchange has a 4 ohm and an 8 ohm recone kit if the voice coil looks damaged but I don’t know which I should buy

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 6 ohm rating is for the entire speaker and it is an impedance rating. The impedance changes depending on the frequency that's being played through them so think of the 6 ohm rating as kinda like an average over the 20-20,000Hz frequency spectrum.
      If the coil is damaged on the one you can use your multi meter to check the resistance of the other working woofer (woofer only). If the meter reads around 3-4 ohms it's generally a 4 ohm and if it's higher let's say around 6-7 ohms then it's an 8 ohm.

      I sure would like to know if I can fix my dual voice coil sub that has one coil working and one that's not or at least that's the read I get on it by doing an ohms or resistance test

  • @DanielRanegar
    @DanielRanegar หลายเดือนก่อน

    If I push down on one side of the driver cone & hear scraping, but not if I evenly press down on the entire cone, is there a problem?

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a good chance that the voice coil is not 100% centered. This can be an issue depending on the tolerances of the coil gap in the magnet. I have had woofers that were exactly what you mentioned and they are still going strong. I have also had woofers that eventually failed because of this.
      What I would do is download a tone generator, hook just the woofer up to your amp, play a 10Hz test tone so the woofer moves up and down slowly without hearing a tone and slowly increase the volume to get some cone movement. While doing this if there is any voice coil rub you will hear it and it will have to be re-centered. If not I wouldn't worry too much about it.

    I hahave a set of HEAD speakers that look just like those 211s. 15in they are 15in vegas. I'm afraid to use them because my amp is 8-16ohm & the speakers are 4ohm. Will I trash the speakers??

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When running a 4 ohm speaker on an amp that's only rated as low as 8 ohms you are more likely to damage the amp not the speakers. Lots of people still do it but you have to make sure you keep a close eye on the amp as because those speakers may cause the amp to run hot. Some newer amplifiers will have a protection circuit that will shut the amp down before any damage can happen.

    • @joshholden8561

      Ur amp will be fine u will have plenty of impedance rise to be at a safe ohm load for ur amp.

    Hello I have Cerwin Vegas VS-150 since come out. Now I wonder if you recommend get a replacement speaker or it is recommended to recondition. I don’t know how.

    • @SavingVegas
      @SavingVegas  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The most common part to degrade first is the foam surrounds used on the woofer. There are no new VSW-15 woofers available to purchase anymore and I highly recommend getting the foam replaced before trying to replace with a different woofer. The passive crossovers are designed specifically for the original woofer, midrange and tweeter so using a different woofer can cause all sorts of different issues. If you feel replacing the foam surrounds is beyond your capabilities I recommend finding a professional to have it done for you.
