Terranigma is an extraordinary game and considered to be one of the best SNES titles out there. A shame that America hasn't seen it.
However, this video doesn't really cover the real reason why the game is so great. The plot described here is just the beginning of the game. Afterwards you travel to all continents of the earth, not only to discover them, but also to recreate them. You are restoring all plants on earth, then all animals, afterwards the humans and so on. It's a really great adventure where every action has a huge impact on the world and shapes it.

This game featured some amazing music. I remember letting the somber intro play until the splash screen where Ark stands on collapsed structures in the underworld looking at a distant planet Earth as the music explodes triumphantly. Awe-inspiring stuff to a kid.

Also the bird sanctuary was missing the y, Moscow was spelled Mosque, Neo Tokio, and look at the map. Why is that loch in Scotland the size of Lake Victoria, where is California, why is the Mississippi River called the Colorado, and Scandinavia is Scandia?
      Great game, anyway.

    • @jojobaggins9224
      @jojobaggins9224 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@AJHyoton I actually think a lot of those were on purpose which just added to its charm and mystique, like there were a lot of similar elements to our current reality cycle but since it was a different iteration, some things were different like many of the names and events. Similar, yet different (Columbus sailing in the year 286 for example). "Mosque" was an allusion to religious fanaticism. I interpreted it as the world that was destroyed before was our world today, showing us where we are heading (Beruga had won the nobel prize in the last cycle)

    • @justanotheryoutubechannel
      @justanotheryoutubechannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@AJHyoton Some of those were text length limits, Scandia. and Sanctuar both use 8 characters and are both shortened. You also encounter Greenld. (Greenland) and GreCliff. (I presume GreyCliff.) It seems to me that the game has a maximum of 8 characters and therefore it had to work around it. But I agree Scotland looks ridiculous, and I didn’t realise that the river was misnamed as I don’t know my US geography. NeoTokio was a deliberate choice I fell, and Mosque actually isn’t short for Moscow, in Japanese the town is called “Grand Musoku City”, which was translated as Mosque because there wasn’t enough space for Grand and City in 8 characters. I agree the translation is definitely spotty though and has some weird choices in places, like the expensive dress shop in Loire is localised weirdly, and also in Loire there is a control code issue in the test, leading to a woman skipping her first line and just saying “stress that works for M.me Pampilo’s.”, I assume she meant to say “Marily is a seamstress that works for Madam Pampilo’s.”

Blame it on Nintendo for choosing to localize the game to Europeans after the Enix Shutdown of 1995, but not the world's largest gaming market, North Americans.
Even when Enix restarted their North American operations in 1999, Terranigma was never released for the SNES or PS One.

Someone please help me solve this mystery:
I'm an American and have always lived here. Somehow, I know I played this game sometime in the mid 90's. It's kind of a long story, but my grandmother played a lot of Super Nintendo back then. She was actually the one who introduced me to Zelda and Metroid. Anyway, one day I went to her house, and there it was, a new game called Terranigma. I played the first dungeon and unfortunately never got much farther (until completing it years later through emulation), but I remember loving the style and being really impressed by the overworld effect (its unique concave look helps me know I'm not misremembering some other game).
Years later, I discovered this game apparently was never released here. So how is my experience playing it possible? My only theory is that my grandmother ordered it from some kind of catalogue, which would make some sense because that was how she bought VSH tapes, too. Was such a service available at the time? Could American SNES hardware play a game specially ordered from Europe? I know this I a late comment, but I'm dying to solve this mystery and any help would be much appreciated.

Angkor Wat in IoG looks exactly like it does in the real world, Loulan in Terranigma looks like a real Mongolian village of a certain region, you really feel like you're visiting these locations from around the world.

I could never get arround the idea that it's so unknown.
It's story, scenarios, gameplay, music(oh god the music), everything about it is completely well crafted.
I still remember the night I finished the game like it was yesterday.
It took me like 7 years to finish it, because I played it once, stopped for like 6 years and then came back.
That night was unforgettable, I literally cried and felt like I just ended a once-in-a-life-time journey, those feelings were so real.

Did you know? The GBA games in the Robopon-series (Robpon-ring and cross version) use sprites from Terranigma for their overworld. Not everything, but trees, grass- and shore textures, mountains and other sprites are literally the same.

As a European, I wish this was released in america, it would have gotten much more deserved recognition, To me this is a true gem, and easily in the Top 5 RPGs, alongside Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, TLOZ A Link To the Past and Earthbound

I completed this game about a year ago. Hands down, one of the best games I've played. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who'd want to play a classic SFC RPG.

Terranigma was my first favorite game. Since I saw a review on the spanish Nintendo magazine I felt in love with that great game.
Even today I enjoy listen the great ost of the game.
It was a shame that it wasnt included on the Snes Classic Mini.

I'm surprised it never came to the Wii's Virtual Console. If it had, it certainly would've come to North America as well (for an extra dollar like all the import titles on the VC).

This game, it really was a dream playing through it back then.
There wasn't any experience like it in Europe (we didn't have Chrono Trigger or FF6). Maybe only Secret of Mana was on par.
The story, the concepts (imagine how sad I was when you couldn't talk to animals any more), the music, the world building.
    What an insanely good game.
And again: the music. My God, it's awesome. There are orchestral versions of it. I can highly recommend them.

Mate we didn't get Super Mario RPG or Final Fantasy IV either. Hell I'm probably forgetting more games we didn't get. That's not even accounting for the whole 50hz shit we had until the Dreamcast introduced 60hz gaming to us on a home console.

      Still gives me the chills.
For me, it's "The Underworld". It really makes you feel how tragic it is that there is no overworld (yet) and it shows how damned the underworld is.
Really puts you in the mood for this game.
Remember the zombie town? :-o That was so scary.

Terranigma was never published in North America due to the Enix Shutdown of November 1995.
Nintendo chose to ignore the world's largest gaming market, North Americans, as they were left out of this game in favour of a smaller counterparts like Europeans.
They didn't even released the game for the Canadian market though British and Canadian English have many similarities.
However, Enix restarted their North American operations in 1999.
