This time on Region Locked, we take a look at spinoff titles in the Legend of Zelda series that only released in Japan: Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland, and Irozuki Tingle no Koi no Balloon Trip, developed by Vanpool and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS

I think you've missed to cover one aspect of his character that better informs Japanese audiences compared to American ones. I assume it's likely because this theory lacks definitive sources confirming the influences and similarities.
Aonuma has confirmed that Tingle's initial design is comparable to that of Peter Pan. With the twist being that it is a 30 year old man who wants to be young fairy and not grow up. I believe this refusal to grow up informs his further solo outings.
His character can also be compared to Japanese otaku and other reclusive, introverted individuals you'd find in dedicated hobby sites/gatherings. Tingle is obsessed with fairies and wanting to be one so much so that his rest of his life has taking a back seat. Much like stereotypical otaku you'd find in Japanese media he lacks a social life, a profession, and romantic partners. Or there's the joke on Japanese message boards like 2ch about how once you hit 30 as a virgin you are granted magical powers.
And in particular his second game is all about him trying to romance women while having no prior history despite being nearly middle aged. I believe the developers and Japanese audiences saw the humor in seeing such a character going through this type of development. Tingle goes through a parody of Dorothy's coming of age story as a 30 year old man trying find a romantic partner. It's a joke and character that I think has been lost in translation.

I believe that it can even be a reality check for people that are in a similar situation, told in an humorous way, of course.
Richter WLK the part about someone being in a similar situation as you is fine, but all the gross parts bother me. The curvy women in bikinis, the whole idea of “romancing” various girls to get what you want out of them, the flesh-colored lumps with curly hair on their butts... it’s gross.

I believe those games didn't get localized due to potential controversy, licencing issues, lack of interest and/or no interest at all.

Asian english japanese games (like summer lesson/bullet girls phantasia/doax3/some super robot wars games etc) no censorship at all.
Fan translated games are also good for people who hate censorship, but that is no money for the company.

actually there's another Tingle game that only released in Japan for the DS. Japanese Club Nintendo members were able to use their points to get Tingle's Balloon Fight, a remake of Balloon Fight with Tingle replacing the original Balloon Fighter. ( ooh....there's an idea for you. Do an episode on Club Nintendo games that didn't get worldwide releases )

I like how when Link in BotW is wearing Tingle’s costume from the first DLC, every NPC that he walks past does this weird shocked double-take for a few seconds as if they’re wondering what the heck they just witnessed. Really makes for some silly trolling moments when I’m bored with the actual story. 😆
Real men beat Master Mode as Tingle.
There is a character that looks similar to Tingle in Twilight Princess. He runs a mini game in Castle Town, where you have to use your hookshot to collect gems. If you complete this challenge you can upgrade your quiver twice.

I'm positive that if it weren't for the Triforce hunt in Wind Waker, Tingle wouldn't be anywhere near as hated as he is in America.

I absolutely agree that hating him is part of the fun of him. I would totally play a horror game staring him, providing it were actually unsettling and not just silly.
To be fair, I heard about Tingle's Rosy Ruppeeland a year after it's UK release, and the following tax season I bought 10 new copies for 30£ each from GAME's website.
I gave them away as gifts to people I know, who would never have heard of the game, most actually liking it. I only have my own copy remaining now, but I do like to replay it from time to time.
I've actually played *Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland* on the DS back then. I'm not a fan of Tingle, but the game is really good! I loved it and 100%-completed it. The humor in the game is fantastic and the gameplay is something different than what we are used to, making it special.
I got the first game at a convention the bartering with people is a very tricky mechanic so I didn't make it very far. The second game sounds like it might be a silly good time worth giving a shot.

I own it too. Easily one of my top favourite DS games ever. The game has so much charm.

You also had the Japan-exclusive Tingle's Balloon Fight for the Nintendo DS, but I suppose you could argue that it's simply an updated reskin of Balloon Fight with not much to talk about.
Rosey Rupeeland is a great DS title. Tingle isn't weird, just misunderstood.
I saw a playthrough of the translated balloon trip... we missed out. It was funny as hell, and the story had a lot of charm. I admit tingle was also pretty creepy at times, especially with those faces he made when he was using his slingshot. But ultimately it was a pretty good game. 2009 me would have loved this game on his DS.

Let's not forget that in Wind Waker it's strongly hinted that Tingle is a murderer, and outright shown that he is abusive.
I really wish these games came to the U.S. Now I have to make a modded cartridge to play it "legitimately" and understand it at all...

Good news for the first game, DS games are region free except for some later releases.
That means you can import a PAL copy of Ruppeeland and it will work on an NTSC DS

Honestly kind of angry that people would go out of their way to tell Nintendo NOT to release the Tingle game.
I haven't played the first game yet, but the second game...listen, don't get deceived by the box art. It is rather a good game. I loved the storyline, and even the characters. You can take many ways to play through the game rather than simply going straight forward, as there's multiple endings from good to bad. Touch and click game and a dating sim may not be something that people are interested into, but I would recommend people to try it out.
I think pretty much the sole problem
Americans have with Zelda is that they take Zelda far more seriously than the rest of the world does. A lot of Zelda fans think the story is actually “good”. They take it far beyond anything Nintendo actually meant by it. And so they see Tingle as a reminder that Zelda is valid sillyness for entertainment purposes and not Shakespeare.
He wasnt overly weird, i didnt like him but i didnt hate him, the problem was it was 50 paragraphs to get him to sell you a map... on top of first having to shoot him down. If he was just a normal person standing on the floor, and opened a buying menu immediately, it would have made him more appealing as a character. or rather, it wouldnt have added to the hatred of the character.
True, Tingle TECHNICALLY didn't get into TP, but Purlo's design is based on him.
Also, I seem to be in the minority of North American audiences, I want these games localized here because they are just plain beautiful. Still sad they cancelled the Horror Tingle title though.
They need to bring them to the States.

You forgot that since no DS games were region locked up until the DSi, Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland could be imported and played on any American DS and 3DS system.
I had a copy, but sold it on Ebay for $70.00 last year.
My great grand uncle, Bert Lahr, played the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz. I just want everyone to know this.
In case anyone is unaware, I have all 3 tingle games on my phone. And I can tell you, Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland is the best RPG, besides the Earthbound series, that I have played in my life.
Grand Rupee still haunts my nightmares.

I bought Rosy RupeeLand and Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love English dubs for like $40 on ebay. They're fine. They're weird. Have almost 0 to do with Zelda outside of rupees and Tingle. It's mostly just the novelty of being able to say I have them have finished them. But that's about it.

This honestly looks like the best game ever. Cool earthboundesque artstyle, tounge-in-cheek referential humor... Then again, the ugly-cute aesthetic of tingle doesn't really seem to work outside of japan

I dunno if I'm just an odd one out here, but iv always had a soft spot for Tingle. He is so wierd I love him, he's just such a strange and greedy character. Pluss the idea of a 30 something man dressing as a fairy and setting out to aquire riches has always amused me, I wish he had been in breath of the wild and I hold out hope that Tingle gets some love in a future game.

Its one of the only few times i am happy to live in Europe. Tingles Rosy Rupeeland is one of the best DS Games. Its sad however that the other Games where not released outside Japan. You could have also at least mentioned the third Tingle DS Game. Tingle's Balloon Fight

Actually, Tingle does indeed appear in Twilight Princess. He's appeared in every game since Majora's Mask in some form. For Twilight Princess he is in a more realistic form as Purlo, the owner of the STAR mini game.
I didn't mind Tingle much in Majora's Mask. He was a little weird, and a little annoying to talk to, but you only really had to talk to him maybe half a dozen times in the whole game, and if you knew the game well he was entirely optional. More or less the same deal with Oracle of Ages.
It was Wind Waker when I started to hate him. Because he isn't optional in that game. He doesn't have a minor role. He is completely vital to progress the story. And you can't get past him without thousands of rupees and several minutes of his repetitive monologue. It was Wind Waker that turned Tingle from "weird map guy" to "greedy, creepy bastard whose life literally revolves around taking your money and bothering the hell out of you while doing it." (I guess the second of the two games here means we can add "perverted" to the list too.)
He was marginally better in Minish Cap, because he was optional again. But he was still pretty weird.

Honestly, I would have liked for these games to have been released in the US, though I would have sucked ass at them, and I'd like to see him more in the future, but I have a feeling that Nintendo doesn't really care to acknowledge him too much.

I think the rock DS is supposed to convey an ancient and forbidden feel to the game, they've used similar stuff in other Region Locked's I believe
and the Eiffel Tower is there because Paris is associated with love and has an expensive living cost.
if you check correctly there is a tori(japan gate) and the eifell tower. I think it simbolises JAP and PAL reagions. Since it is where region locked games stays.

Rosy Rupeeland isn't Japan-Exclusive though. Needless to say, it sold rather poorly. 1:01 Ahh you mentioned it, okay.
During Hyrule Warriors' Pre-Production Omega Force and Team Ninja even wanted to include Tingle as a comic-relief character into the games' main story but were warned by the head of project coordination (interesting rank by the way) Eiji Aonuma that Tingles Inclusion as a major character would hurt the game's sales in the West, referring back to the sales (or lack thereof) of Rosy Rupeeland.

I don't hate Tingle per se, but he was an incredibly poor choice for a Spin-Off Main Character I know the Zelda team is unbelievable reluctant to use the character that sort of gave them their name in the first place. If it weren't Tingle, the games would probably be received better.
Lately, Nintendo opened up a little again with the Zelda Franchise (after Capcom closing Flagship Studio, which handled Capcom's Zelda Titles) giving other Teams a hand in development.
For example enlisting Monolith Soft as help in overworld creation of three mainline Zeldas to date and most notably (because almost completely outsourced) the aforementioned Hyrule Warriors by Team Ninja and Omega Force, TriForce Heroes by Grezzo after they "proved their competence" by making the 3DS-Remakes of OoT and MM and the not even released yet Cadence of Hyrule.
Which is already exceptionally noteworthy because Nintendo gave the rights to an Indie Studio and moreover a Studio that only has three other games yet released (being Crypt of the Necrodancer, Phantom Brigade and Industries of Titan) and only one of these (Crypt) ever appearing on a Nintendo Platform at all.
So maybe there is hope for a Zelda title that actually sees Zelda actually playable. Like Spirit Tracks but expanded to a true two-player mode instead of "remote-controlling" a fearful princess' spirit in an unbreakable armor...
I like Tingle. He doesn't deserve all this hate.

There's no doubt a lot of people in the west would inevitably take some issue with Tingle, but I believe for some that the real problem is the Triforce hunt in Wind Waker. In any case, it's a shame he hasn't really shown up for some time now.
I may be remembering wrong, it's been more than a few years, but I believe that Aunuma stated in an interview that Purlo, the man who runs the Clawshot game in Twilight Princess, was supposed to be a more realistic depiction on Tingle.
Wasn't there a 3rd Tingle game? A Japan-exclusive Balloon Fight update for the DS that starred Tingle and was distributed through Club Nintendo?

Great episode I played the 1st game I thought it was pretty unique found haggling prices and light puzzles fun would love a re-release on switch at some point lol. Cool to know 2nd game was fan translated might give it a try in the future.

Yes. Yes he is. Balloon trip of love is literally all about women being repulsed by that until he gives them an exuberant amount of gifts. And it's also a full on Wizard of OZ parody for whatever reason. Kakashi literally means scarecrow in Japanese and Buriki means tin and it has almost all the plot beats as that movie.

Japanese vowels, much like in many languages (but not English, because we like to be complicated), are always pronounced the same way.

I use the term "vowels" loosely, since many Japanese characters include what we would consider a consonant AND a vowel sound, but that's an unnecessary detail in today's lesson.

I think the true reason why the Tingle games were never released at the time was mostly because of how ugly the US saw him. I mean I dislike Tingle too in a way, but I would've at least tried to at least play the games out if they would've been released
