    I'm a Chevy guy through and through, but I have to say that this is the best looking and baddest Mustang that came out of the Ford plant. Ford had some very good looking Mustangs in 69 and 70 in my opinion and this one is an perfect example of what happens when the engineers and designers get it right. One of the best looking cars produced during the Muscle car era.

    A rare MCotW error; the bottom end of a Boss 429 engine is not an "FE", like the 427, 428 and a few smaller V8s. It is based upon the later "385" block used in the 429s and 460s. Small issue. Love you guys and definitely love this car!

      tom holstein was there much difference between the 69 and the 70? I heard the only difference is the hood scoop colours......That can't be right....i mean hood scoop colour choices may be right but there has to be more differences than just that. Do u know?

      What about the hood pins and lanyards? Were they not standard on the Boss 9's? I know some of the Boss 302's had them but there are many Boss pictures on internet showing them without hood pins. Were they an ordering option? I remember (I'm 64) when they first showed up on Mustangs there was concern about lanyard cables scratching the paint but Ford had covered the lanyards in plastic sheathing. Side note: I saw a few Boss 302's and later some Boss 351's driving around while I was of high school age, but I only ever saw one Boss 429. I was 10th grade, walking home from high school through my neighborhood when a blue Mustang fastback came slowly rumbling down the street. When it got even with me I saw the "Boss 429" callout on the side. I was like "My God, where did that come from?" I thought I was "seeing things" because until that moment I did not realize that it even existed. I only knew about muscle cars and the Boss 302 from reading Car & Driver (in particular, C&D June 1969 edition) and talking with guys at school. And never once did I ever see that same Boss 429 again. My memory of seeing it that day is like it was some ghostly bad-ass vision.

    Hey Kevin, I know it’s 4 years late, but how about a deeper dive into the Boss 429? The 69 “S” engine and 1970 “T” engine. The fact that the engines were built by Holman-Moody. The 69 valve springs were improperly tempered and hence wouldn’t rev well. Ford replaced them but that sort of added to the idea that the engines were deliberately detuned. In 1969 I was in high school and we were playing a basketball tournament at U.S. Grant in OKC. There was a 1969 Boss 429, same color maroon, in the parking lot. I mentioned that to one of my teammates. He said, “Yeah it’s Bob Shirley’s”. Bob Shirley went to Putnam City High School, was a guard on their basketball team. He wound up a pitcher for the New York Yankees. It just blew my mind that he had a brand new Boss 429 in high school. They beat us in every game. They also had Alvin Adams on their team. He played for OU and pro for the Phoenix Suns. I graduated from Oklahoma State with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Once or twice a semester a professional would visit the campus and tell us about the real engineering world. The engineer from Ford described the drivability qualification and how it hindered many performance engines. (I had a 1963-1/2 Falcon Futura 2 door hardtop. 3 on the tree, 170 cubic inch 6, 101 horsepower)

      @V8TV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Correct, we've addressed that mis-speak in previous comments.

  • @02DZ
    @02DZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    First off, the Boss 429 was not an FE. It was the later true big block Ford which had a taller deck and wider bore spacing. The engine was designed from the start as a purpose built racing engine that in NASCAR trim produced around 700 hp at 7000+ rpm. In the Mustang it was de-tuned to 375 hp to avoid excessive insurance penalties, and also to keep mediocre drivers from killing themselves and others due to having wild, hairy handling characteristics from the front heavy weight distribution. That said, if the Mustang with that engine was outfitted with a wild cam, headers, more carb, S/S chassis tuning, lighter wheels, DOT drag tires, and a worthy driver, it would easily smoke anything else on the street both currently and back in the day.

    Drew Austin ran a Boss 429 hemi in nostalgia nitro in October of 2021 it ran 5.5 second 1/4 mile in California at CHRR 2nd quickest run in nostalgia AA/FC first year out. That is the same engine NHRA was scared to allowed run because they changed rules right before Walt Austin was to debut his 429 combo in the Alcohol Funny Car class saying the Boss 429 had potential is an understatement. It would of heat the current engine combination pretty bad in 2004. The corrupt NHRA can’t have anyone disrupting the status quo. Every American manufacturer would be building DOHC engines by now if NHRA didn’t exist.

    I had an OEM Ford air cleaner 40+ years ago that I did not know what it went to. I thought maybe it could be a Boss 429, but didn't really know. I now see that it was a Boss 429 air cleaner. I wonder what that part would be worth now? I gave it to a friend when I sold him my 1969 Mach I 390 4 speed Mustang.

      @Mark rapacki Yes, quite a bit more. Would have loved to save all the '69-'70 Mustangs I have owned, but could not afford to do so. I have owned many.

    429 is NOT an FE engine. It's a 385 series, the true Ford big block.

      It's a product called Best Wax, made by Presta Products. Should be available online or some Automotive Paint Jobbers.

      Noo!! I'm mainly talkin' about the cars that started it all. The EARLY ('64-'67) GTO's. Any plans to shoot some Coke bottle-bodied Goats?
      Oh, one more question:
      What happens to the "show" when ALL of The Brother's Collection is filmed? And, how many cars are left to feature?
      Many thanks.....

      There was a '65 in that list... We have a few tricks up our sleeves regarding the future of Muscle Car Of The Week. For now, it's not going anywhere as we still have lots to shoot!

    Muscle car of the week means at some point you are going to choose every "muscle car " in the book.
