    Muscle Car Of The Week Video #13: 1970 Ford Mustang BOSS 302
    This week on Muscle Car of the Week, we celebrate an iconic American muscle car - the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302!
    Born from the world of Trans Am racing, the Boss 302 combines stunning looks, impressive performance, and a rich history, making it a true collector's dream.
    Here's what makes the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 special:
    Racing-inspired: Built to comply with Trans Am regulations, the Boss 302 boasts a powerful 302 cubic inch V8 engine with unique features like Cleveland-style cylinder heads and a Holley 780 CFM carburetor.
    High-performance handling: This Mustang features a lowered suspension, upgraded brakes, and a quicker steering ratio, ensuring exceptional handling capabilities.
    Distinctive design: The Boss 302 stands out with its iconic features like the shaker hood scoop, sport slat louvers on the rear window, blacked-out treatment on the rear, and signature Boss 302 striping.
    Limited production: With only 6,318 units manufactured in 1970, the Boss 302 is a rare and sought-after muscle car.
    The 1970 Ford Mustang BOSS 302 is one of our favorite cars in the Brothers Collection, as it has a design purpose that traces back to Trans Am racing. This Medium Blue Metallic version features the 290 HP 302 Windsor V8 topped with Cleveland style large-valve heads, a Toploader 4-speed, performance suspension, a Shaker hood, and all the visual elements that make a BOSS so cool.

    the front spoiler makes a huge difference in top end stability and engine cooling as it cuts down lift and helps engine bay air flow downward.instead of packing it all up under the hood. I added a custom one to my 66 GT and drove thru NC on a 100 + degree day with the temp on 160. also pulled the two rear pins on my glass Shelby hood for a test and with the spoiler on would stay glued down, with out the spoiler at around 40 mph the back of the hood start to lift off the body. easy worthwhile mod.

    These heads were fantastic. You could argue that closed chamber Cleveland heads were the best all around, mass produced heads ever made during the muscle car era. Boss 429 heads, Chevy LS6 heads, and Chrysler Hemi heads were the greatest I suppose, but closed chamber 4V Cleveland heads were awesome all around cast iron everyday street heads.

    • @jonathanerickson1543
      @jonathanerickson1543 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wonder if trans am rules didn't allow hemi heads? Because if this car had a hemi head I wonder how it would perform

    • @Boss302Kirk
      @Boss302Kirk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that these heads are the best I've ever used. My Boss 302 runs in "B" Stock all over the Midwest and after a freshening up at Arbor Garage in Omaha, Nebraska, it put out 612 HP on the dyno and ran a 10.88 1/4 mile E.T., bettering my 11.03 ET standing time. I also will say that the Chrysler Hemi Heads are probably the most popular heads ever, for street or strip, but they have their place just like the Closed Chamber 4V Cleveland Heads fit and perform on "The Boss" perfectly! Race 'em if you got em, guys!

    • @Boss302Kirk
      @Boss302Kirk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you could make it work, you may have trouble perfecting the settings for just about all facets of the upper end. Also, marrying it all together may give problems in the bottom end too! (whoa!) Cool thought though.

    • @leesamuelson
      @leesamuelson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they could use any head as long as it was a production head. In 68 they were running tunnel port heads but they had issues with them oiling and such. When the Cleveland head was made they experimented with mocking them on the Windsor block. they found the motor made better power with the new production Cleveland head than the special tunnelport.

    • @Boss302Kirk
      @Boss302Kirk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine was always 7200 RPM's. That motor will let you hold it at 7200 RPM's through every shift, if you're fast enough. A great runner (like mine) will pull the front wheels off the ground for 1 1/2 ft. in 1st gear, 3/4" in 2nd gear, and just a tad in 3rd gear. Dyno'd at 612 HP., it has made me proud since 1970! Race 'em if you got 'em, guys!

    • @TheOzthewiz
      @TheOzthewiz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Boss302Kirk My '69, even with Doug Thorely headers, porting and polishing heads and matching the intakes, wouldn't dyno anywhere NEAR 600HP, lol. It was MUCH faster than a STOCK Boss302, which would do the "1320" in about 15 seconds. Pulling the front wheels off the ground wouldn't happen UNLESS you had it "blue printed" AND bolted a BIG ASS BLOWER on it!!!

    I can't believe that even on this Boss 302, the rear wing is parallel to the slope of the rear window. On every race car including the Bud Moore'sTransAm Mustang, the rear wing is pointing down at the front, to give more down force to the rear end at highway speed to match the front spoiler down force. This Boss is setup for disaster with the rear wing actually giving lift to the rear end at high speed, something Mustangs definitely don't need!

    MrWoodshoes. As long as I can remember, they used a Windsor block with Cleveland heads. I read that when Ford switched from 289 to 302, there were problems with the 302 in racing. Can a 302 crankshaft from a Windsor fit in the 351 Cleveland block? That's news to me. Thanks for the info. John

  • @MrWoodshoes

    Just to set the record straight, the Boss 302 is based upon a Cleveland block , not a Windsor. It has inherent oiling problems which cause the #1 rod to be the last to get oil after the upper valvetrain which will cause a premature failure of that bearing, which I know from experience. It is a nice video but Keith is obviously reading from a script that is incorrect. The addition of an audio clip of the valve train would say much more than any words from the narrator!

    • @2010GT70B2
      @2010GT70B2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect. The Boss 302 is based on a WINDSOR block. It is unique in that it has 4 bolt mains, extra thick webbings in the main areas and the tell tale screw in freeze plugs. The (at the time) us released Cleveland heads were made to fit on the Windsor block after the failed 302 Tunnel Port from 1968.
